Scramble Words

A lot of us like to play Scramble Words and naturally like to score as many points as we can.
How many points you can score in a game is limited by the number of empty boxes for a particular puzzle. If there are a lot of empty boxes you can chalk up a reasonable score. Conversely, if there are few empty boxes the opposite applies.
If you are careful you can achieve the maximum score by not nominating a missing word until all its boxes are full except the last one but at the end of the day there is a maximum which can't be exceeded. This leads me to question how some people can achieve those huge scores - well in excess of the theoretical maximum. Maybe somebody can enlighten me.
