My grandson's football team won their championship this weekend and both his parents were there supporting him. They drive the boys to their soccer, football, basketball and hockey practices and games. They send them out onto the field, the rink or the court, not telling them to win, but just to do their best and have fun. That is how it should be, but for so many parents it is not.
My two nephews are grown now, but I used to go to their hockey games as they were growing up, and the behaviour of some parents is beyond belief. Screaming at the refs, the coaches and the players. Arguments and fights with other parents in the stands, one even resulting in a fist fight.
How does a child feel when he sees his parent behaving this way? Is he proud? Is he confused? Is he embarrassed? Whatever he is feeling, it will stay with him and contribute to the kind of person he will become later in life.
As adults, some of us don't realize just how closely children watch us.
Give children something positive to strive for.
Winning is great, but losing also has it's lessons to teach.
The journey to either outcome needs to be taken, and at it's core it needs to be fun, because without that, what's the point?
