Going Cashless
gordy12-Nov-23 07:56 am
The Optus outage affected a lot of people and businesses. Technology has taken over a big part of our lives. The Government is considering a cashless society. I for one could not manage what I do in caring for another without cash. What happens to pocket money, not just for children but for many other situations we find ourselves in. Banks are closing branches and ATM'S, Australia Post is closing down branches as well. What do you think, is cashless the way to go or should we let our Government know this is not right? "let's have another referendum"?? We are asked to put our hands in pockets for them all the time.

Sometimes I like to use cash for smaller items like buying a coffee but it would be a stretch to have to pay for major items like a new house!

Honestly doesn't worry me because I rarely have cash on me but I do feel for the elderly who don't really know any different and rely on cash to pay for their goods and bills.Personally I don't agree with a cashless society completely but for those that don't want to use cash and prefer other forms of payment then it's a personal choice.

I don鈥檛 use cash much but taking the option away is stupid. What happens if we have a worldwide hack and have to shut the power off like all those out there movies? 馃槀 but then again cashiers these days don鈥檛 know how to count cash without a machine anyway

The only cash they should get rid of is the 5c coins.

I like cash pay because I don't overspend. So please no.

Please NO - I spend less with cash and I bet most are similar to me. When we have digital only currencies (ie credit cards) we spend spend spend and spend - well beyond our means which is insane! If you have to use cash, you think, you think twice or more about whether or not you really need something.

cashless is bollicks or bollocks whichever when technology goes down what do you do, cash is king, it's not the jester, technology will fail then where are you, I was in our local woolies the other day with the Optus failure I counted 7 shopping trollies full of groceries, that were left because of the Optus break it should be a choice,
                • Dada WA
Certainly it should be put to a referendum.

There are several benefits of a cashless society. Here are a few of them. (1) Improved digital footprint, which reduces scope for public corruption and illegal/illicit activities going undetected. (2) Life-changing socio-economic benefits in developing countries. (3) Seamless, frictionless (transactions) for low-cost items in developing countries. (4) Reduced disease transmission (you are not carrying/touching cold cash/change). (5) Last, increased connivence!馃槆

No! Too much government control there. I don't trust any government, no matter where they are on the political spectrum, not to abuse power if they control everything. Throw a switch, and you can't buy groceries. Your BMI is too high so you cost the government too much in health care. No birthday cake for you! When another government hacks in, you are stuck. And let's not forget the Greek government a few years (5?) back. 10% off the top of people's accounts to help with the bail-out. No thanks, I'll want cash to pay for things when the network is down.

I use cash to buy black market cigarettes and second hand items from people on Marketplace, Craigslist, and yard sales. When these people start accepting payments by bank transfer or cash apps, I won't need to carry any cash at all.

Making a country cashless makes the masses easier to control...to track and to tax....I hate even the concept...I'd just go live somewhere else... I am a big fan of democracy...

going cashless is a bad thing, not to long ago there was an article on the WEF website{ world economic website}It has now been removed where they spoke about one day we will be paid in tokens,so much will go into a say food account, some into a rent account, some into a utilities account, and so on,all the different things we pay out for,the tokens will not be transferable,no utilities tokens can be used in a travel account etc. Id say this is many years off,i should be long gone but the start of it is going cashless, then the cbdc

Ever since the first "Banking Card" (Diners Club) was created around 1950, people have been talking about a cashless society. Well, now more than 70 years later, cash is still around and not in a small way either. I suppose cash may disappear one day, but not in the foreseeable future.

I agree with you Gunter there will be marching in the streets rioting and looting if those honest tradies get wind of the cashless society. How are they going to be able to afford to buy those 80k utes. What will happen to the brown paper bags. I guess they'll have to set up crypto accounts. To bad so sad

Some shops here already don't accept cash. Especially small shops and cafes where robbery is a worry. They feel no money in the till is the way to go. Again all about choice.

Optus - recently 2 different "huge problems" I don't understand why people don't leave them, there is good competition/deals out there and better Telcos.

Emergency calls should be to be connected to any network. Time the goverment acted.

I use cash as much as possible and always in a taxi as the government takes the add on percentage charge ,the cabbies don't even get it. I had to go to my bank's branch the other day as my new card wouldn't activate online through the app, l asked Cebu who just couldn't understand my question, then when I asked to speak with someone it was connecting me to Sydney ( another state) and would be 4 minutes, I couldn't see any on hold info as my ipad isn't connected with a pH no, So ended up at the bank. It was packed! Lots of elderly people sitting waiting for assistance, l was 6th in the queue...and not so elderly ??!! So stop closing down our facilities and yes the govt should step in , Cash is still very much a commodity.

Please do Liane, that's what happened to us rates sky rocketed, no customer loyalty, switch a couple of years ago, much better off $$. I think they have deals on at the moment, ads on TV.
