culture shocks...when things aren't what you expected...
APB11-Apr-24 08:10 pm
As a kid I hitch hiked all over Europe..I thought Denmark would be laid back like Sweden or Finland...but the bike gangs there are violent...I was hunted through the outer suburbs of a major city by a gang with bike chains and knives...maybe 9 in total...after money or passports or whatever..for over an hour...I climbed up into a building site and watched them cirlcling...scary stuff...they knew I was there...I just saw something about Danish Bike Gangs on the news tonight..it reminded me...nothing seems to have changed!...anyone else had a big surprise after arriving somewhere?...things they don't talk about in the tourist brochures....those guys would have probably killed me....

Homelessness has a face that most dont see, it's not by any means a choice but an effect of yes drugs/gambling/cost of living/strained relationships, it impacts kids, wives, fathers, parents, friends, and relatives, I know a lot of help is out there but the impacts and pressure placed on the family because of a parent/parents leaving for whatever the reason maybe are enormous, i over the last few months have been so proud of my granddaughter for the things she has been doing with no knowledge of mine or her mum, she has been buying lunches for kids at school that are not getting fed at home, And she rocked up home with a school bag the other day, Is your old bag no good i say,no there is a girl in my class that uses a woolies bag for her books and was being teased ,she has virtually emptied half her savings at school helping other kids, when i went to her parent-teacher night i was taken back by the fact she is failing, and the teachers ask how can we help her at home, Its not how can we help at home its how much better can you help these kids shes helping by providing better information and talking about things in a positive manner, instead of overlooking issues, nothing is as it is, there is a reason for everything ,good/bad it doesn't matter, people are very quick to paint pictures without looking at the canvas, take the time to find out why,I know people choose this life and there is not much we can do but there are people and families that have this thrust upon them ,i only wish they get to meet my granddaughter who is becoming my hero at her young age setting an example for us all

Well regardless of lack of capitals and an odd comma , I think the fact you are so proud of your considerate and empathetic granddaughter is well warranted a missed dot and a dash. You were simply busy spruiking her rare qualities in the face of her having a sick mum . It sounds like you need a phonecall to your local M.P about that school. No student should be going without the basics and they should have ample social workers on to pick that up. Watch she isn't getting too overwhelmed by helping others and manages to help herself and develop first. She's an asset to that school and to your family , but she needs to work on her grades and not feel bad to ask for help if there actually is any in the school ?

Wow ,nothing so scary as that . The sleeping Arabs at Tehran airport with their turbans were a bit of a shock as an 11yr old from down under I would say ,, apart from that I was suprised in Fiji at having to say Bula ( hello) to everyone basically from the airport security ,cleaners ,police in their long skirts ... everyone! At first I was getting exhausted from it a bit . And they will eyeball you coming your way too so you don't miss the opportunity. Kids waving out of the buses with no windows iin them while you're driving next to them "Bula !" ,, When I got back here I missed it, I walked past someone in my own street ,they just looked down kept walking by .. usual city behaviours ..

Oh how scary! You were a brave kid to hitch hike all over, I'm sure you had some adventures! I'd say the culture shocks I've experienced were in my own country traveling to other states!

I had lots of adventures in the US too ..but I always felt safer there

    • Holly CatAPB
What was one of your favorite places in the US, if any?
      ·
    • APBHolly Cat
New Orleans ..I could live there.... I felt at home..
      ·
    • Holly CatAPB
Did you get to experience Mardi Gras? I've never been there. I thought about going there when I was younger, than Hurricane Katrina hit there and caused a lot of damage.
      ·

the only city in the USA i would consider living, i love the whole state, specially the bayous ,, and the french quarter,,,and of course the food,,
      ·
    • APBHolly Cat
I'm not sure how much more beating the poor place can take..but when I was there I had a fantastic time..as Allin says.... fantastic food....the French Quarter...kids on street corners tap dancing for small change.and they were clearly loving it!...loads of the local kids looking for an angle to get some money out the tourists...a bit like my own home town...pool hall sharks and dodgy card players....a couple would look at you...a quick smile and a wink... before carrying on with what they were doing...sadly I didn't see the mardi gras ...but I felt instantly at home there.... welcome I guess.... like I was supposed to be there ...that is really rare...
