Lactose Free Coffees
Glen E 8847110-Mar-25 11:02 pm
As a lactose free person, I believe I am being overcharged for my coffee/latte as now I am being asked for an additional amount ranging from 50 cents to $1 to cover the soy or almond milk.
However the cost of soy or almond milk at the supermarket is only 10 cents a litre more than normal or skim milk. My lactose free coffee/latte only requires a small amount of soy/ almond milk. So why should it be acceptable in our coffee loving society today to rip off those who are unable to drink the normal milk in the coffee.
It is also most annoying to such people when we pay the penalty for soy milk and discover a little later that the milk in our coffee was normal milk !
Come on Coffee Shop Owners give the soy / almond coffee drinkers a fair deal.

When will they invent artificial vegetables, made from real meat?

Maybe not as many people drink it, so more goes to waste.

Bring your own ? Take lactose tablets? Change to black coffee? Change to tea? Give it up?

I see your point as we already pay enough for what's out there. But I guess we all have our preferences and that's fine too, just depends on where you go for coffee too because my daughter is a barista and they don't charge extra for soy.

It might be because they don't get many orders for that lactose free stuff and therefore the wastage of that milk is high.

I used to work in a cafe in a very touristy place. The prices were higher than in a normal cafe, but they didn’t charge extra for specialty milks. And they cost them a lot more than 10 cents extra a litre, they bought regular milk in bulk, and smaller cartons of the specialties, which often got thrown out after a few days, as they would go off before the whole carton was used. I also have issues with lactose, but I drink black coffee, and some places charge the same for a long black as they do for a cappuccino. A lot less work, less product for them to buy and less washing up too. It would probably bother me if I having to buy a cafe coffee was a necessity.

Cafes and restaurants always charge far more. Partly because as well as paying the supermarket (or wholesaler) product price, they also have to pay for the rent, refrigeration, lighting, staff wages, broken or stolen tableware, etc., etc. If you want cheaper coffee, just make it yourself at home. 🙂

Totally get why this is frustrating. The price difference at the supermarket is tiny so it feels unfair to pay so much extra at cafe. And it's even worse when they charge for soy milk but still give you regular milk by mistake 🤦 We need more coffee shops start being fairer to people who need some options

I'm a barista at a busy Cafe and yes it can be time consuming doing the different milks, especially since soy, almond, oat milk require extra attention and skill to get right since it burns easier and is harder to froth since it's water based. Cost also depends on the brand, some brands work better for frothing than others and are typically more expensive. Bonsoy for example is one commonly used in cafes and is $4.50 a carton, use that carton in a large coffee you are lucky to get 3 coffees from that 1 carton, then add coffee bean cost, delivery of products to the shop and then labour cost.

Capitalism, any way to make money, they will charge. There are a lot more options now, but if you want the gluten free, vegan, keto option, etc, you have to pay extra. But also, if customers complain, there are times they take the charge off. Starbucks recently stopped charging extra for dairy free milk, so there's hope!

The two biggest money makers in a cafe are coffee and the soup of the day...no-one seems to care that they both cost very little make...you wanting to use several different milks would make the Barrista's job much more difficult..in a really busy cafe it would be a nightmare....I would hate to be doing that job now....it was a breeze when I did it....I enjoyed it..nobody needed all this crap in 1980...(why is that?) what happened to humans in the meantime to need all this extra stuff?...and who is supposed to pay for the extra work..stock and storage?...its not just the purchase price my friend...you are missing the point..it makes everything a lot more difficult... and more expensive

Quite a few years ago now, I was asked to make a coffee with almond milk. I thought How weird, what the hell is almond milk, I should have paid more attention in the barista class. I just got some almond nuts [crushed from the kitchen] and put it in the coffee. yes, i gave them a refund and was vanquished to the bottle shop

There are only 2 naturally occurring nuggets on a chicken situated just behind each hipbone in that little dip ( otherwise known as oysters here ) ;)

If you haven't already, buy Lactaid chewables. You can then enjoy lactose.
