Supermarkets seem to think that you do all your shopping in the same store and work to get your loyalty. Is that what you really do?

we do a big shop 500 plus or so every fortnight but we swap where we shop and use our cards to get the 10 % OFF twice a month, then we shop at different stores for things we might run out of, we are really lucky we have 5 major stores all within a few kilometers

But does using more petrol justify your savings at different stores?

Working in a supermarket I find people like to know where to easily find items, shelves full and replenished and have friendly staff to help.

4 points for No I use several stores to get the best prices. I shop at Aldi, Woolworths and Coles at Warringah Mall which is just across the road from me. Every Wednesday I go over to the Mall and pick up the three weekly catalogues then go home and pick out all of the Specials. I then have until the following Tuesday to go shopping for them, especially the half price ones which I stock up on.

Has anyone checked the specials for both supermarkets. Each week they alternate what they have. Both always have soda drinks ( ones I don’t drink), chips on special. So it’s like what the meerkats say in the ad. It pays to compare.

My local W has done a great (stuff up). They rearranged all the shelves and now you need to have a compass and road map. Before I knew exactly where things were. They don’t use logic with the products. One would think all things linked to cooking would be in one aisle. No separate ones depending on what.

We don't shop at Aldi because their catalogue advertising is Dishonest and Deliberately Misleading. They also sent $AU421 million back to their Head Office in Germany in 2024, money lost to the Ausrtralian Economy forever. They, like all Foreign Owned companies simply see Australia as a very profitable Cash Cow, they have no real interest in Australia or her people. My local Coles, though a relatively small supermarket, is wonderful. The Staff are fantastic. Now this is not a whinge but now that I am the last of my generation with all of the younger members of the family living Interstate I, like 1000s of other older people, have few friends left as they have all died, that visit to the Supermarket ensures we have some contact with other people, in ours we can have a friendly chat as we go through the checkout, the staff know our names, as we do theirs, so it makes for a pleasant time.

Most other places they tend to be separated due to the selfish greed of each company continually trying to stop the other opening a branch nearby. Realistically, there is not any actual competition on prices. You might save a few cents here and there, but the two "competing" companies in New Zealand simply copy each others prices. (The same happens with pretty much everything else, such as petrol stations, etc.)

I've also noticed that both brands used to release the catalogues of their week's specials on the Sunday night, but now one brand waits until Monday so they can make last minute minuscule changes. The New Zealand government is waffling on about having another brand come into New Zealand act as a competitor, but that won't work. Firstly the new brand would have to open a ton of stores across the country pretty much instantly, and even if that was possible, the new brand will certainly just copy the prices of the current two anyway.

I often just take my flyers to my main store and price match what I can there. IF something isn't in the flyer to price match AND it's a good deal, I'll drive across town and get a few things while I'm out.
