I have paid more than enough sales, income, gasoline and property tax over the last 60 plus years, everything should be free for everyone in Canada by now. Oh wait. Forgot to mention all of the sin tax I used to and still do pay. Hand outs for everyone!

Who is paying for the free lunch.
·
Jayne 1600822
As long as it's healthy and is able to meet all children's dietary requirements. It would certainly save wastage at home. Should be factored in to school fees
·
Debbie 1581306
I think it would be a good idea for families who are struggling but in other countries they do provide lunch and its not always healthy
·

That could depend on the employment status of people and the system or department they become apart of the understanding that before time and people are at Right not to have there children apart of such weren't exactly schools or system they thought the need that personal information was being used for other things.
Yes that'll depends on how you go about things
60-75% of schools are provided lunches.
So that 35% population could be more than those provided for that's where business taxes producements funding come into things.
If you realise that alot offers to funding need to understand how the industries from a non profit to a profit to a business was structured given the later generations more of a problem when it comes to getting aside companies to establish.
·

Yes!! Singling lower-income families from the 'rich kids' is just going to make them feel even worse than just being hungry and maybe less well dressed.

I think it’s a great idea, when I was younger I lived in the UK with my parents, the English schools all have hot lunches for students for free. And over here many kids go without food which is sad.

To do anything that stigmatizes or identifies children in need from the rest must be avoided. Children can be so very cruel to anyone seen as different from the herd.

Government should be providing funding so that all parents that are struggling with ongoing financial food costs and other costs at least have support that their children are getting lunch like the other kids at school are..No child should have to go hungry,we do not live in third world countries Australia and New Zealand! It's not the children's fault they don't have any lunch so why should they suffer.
·

I agree with KaptainKlutz, richer families who can afford it would take advantage of it which usually ruins it for people who need assistance.

With social welfare payments to parents as high as they currently are, the responsibility should be the parents of the children to supply a suitable lunch!

There would be a cost probably incorporated into all fees whether used by all students or not. In Australia,we have such a diverse level of cultures religions and ethnicity to cater for And by the time you adhere to the nutritional guidelines and take into account all the possible food allergies and intolerances and dietary choices,ie vegan it would be almost impossible to implement. I am not saying np. Maybe a lunch club could work, all students who wish to attend register with relevant food related info. Supported by supermarkets( 2nd chance food), volunteers/ parents and donations/ fund raising.
·

If they did the fees would go up

Unfortunately not all parents are good parents. And there are families out there really struggling with food costs. My son is 17 and really should be making his own lunch,( I used to and my siblings at his age)but if I relied on him to do it he wouldn't eat every day. You're right, but at the end of the day kids need to eat

This is all becoming too much. Some schools already provide breakfast because useless parents send their children to school with an empty stomach and now they want lunch provided as well. Schools should be about reading, writing and arithmetic not fixing social ills. I didn't ever receive a baby bonus or family allowance but still managed to feed my 3 children 3 meals a day but now parents receive cash for everything, in fact one of my children receives more in benefits than he pays in tax, so why should his children's meals be paid for by the long suffering tax payer. There are far too many handouts, some should be reigned in.
·

Public schools should concentrate to deliver top class education.
If a child's family is too poor to provide food for the child, then the Government's social program can provide that food.
·
Jacqueline R 353303
1 Some poor children come to school without lunch or had breakfast.
·
Jania S
NO, NO, NO, so many want something for nothing. Children are their parents' responsibility, not the school.. Why not just give your kids away to the school. But providing food for the lower incomes is different.
·
Andrew B 1222902
Yes, they absolutely should. Not just the kids from low income households, all kids in the public school system should be provided a lunch. You do have to be mindful of various food allergies other things like celiac disease, but this should all be indicated and these allergies and conditions should be accommodated for. No kid should have to go hungry, whether it's because their parents/guardians don't have the money, but also kids where they may be neglected too.
·
Jennifer H 722364
i work at a high school in NSW we have food on hand for those students that need some food but if its a consistent request it becomes a welfare issue as parents are responsible to send the students to school with food and a water bottle if the family is struggling then a local church charity is notified to provide assistance on a more regular bases .If schools are to provide food for students this comes down to the government for payment and with our multicultural students and food allergy students the variety of food would be very expensive as it is currently world wide .Most school canteens are tendered and not run by the school so there is no money returned to the school for providing this service .Be safe bring your own food to school .

4pts I would like to say no, but unfortunately some in society have no common sense when it comes to feeding their offspring. If you can't feed them don't breed them.! However if less actual money was spent on impoverished and more time, education and contraception spent, some headway might occur. There are many healthy foods [not just herbs] that can be grown in a bucket on a deck/balcony or in a sunny room inside. Maybe if more schools could have gardens done by the kids, the poor food cycle might be broken? [but then who would oversee the gardens -not sure, maybe an "oldie" with patience :)
·
Gail 1322118
No. Only if there are children that come from low income families and can’t afford daily lunch then I think the school should provide occasionally.
·
Bugalugs
No. Neither their Breakfast, Lunch nor Dinner That is 100% the Responsibility of the Parents, with all the dumping of their children in Pre-School, Post-School, After Hours care why do people bother to have children if they are not, as we see so often now, prepared to:
1) Bring up their own Children and 2) Why do they expect, no demand, that other Taxpayers pay for the care of their Trophy Kids? YOU Choose to breed. Then if that means one of you has to stay at home, it doesn't matter be it the Father or the Mother, then so be it. for that is YOUR Responsibility not mine and most certainly not School Teachers.
·
Allen M 1199636

Yes!! Definitely, if there's plenty of money in the coffers from our hard earned tax deductions to waste on war hungry thieves overseas then surely the Government can use those "funds" to give one decent meal a day to an Australian child.

Nothing is ever free. If the school provides "free" lunches, the you'll simply be paying for it via the higher school fees and higher taxes ... or if the lunches (and delivering, storing, staff, etc.) are "donated" / "sponsored" then you'll be paying for it via higher prices for that company's products / services.
·
Maria B 89860
We are talking about the starving children of Australia!!!!
·
Andrew C 287196
The question was "for all students", not just the "starving" ones, and one of the options does say "Only to those who meet low-income guidelines".
But, if you give out free lunches for just the "poor" students, they may then feel different and get bullied, etc. And the snowball gets bigger and bigger - in America the "poor" can already apply to get "free" smartphones (expensive iPhones at that) and phone plans, "free" laptops, etc., because as everyone knows, an expensive smartphone is a "necessity". 🙄
Plus, it doesn't make it any of this "free" stuff less expensive for whoever pays the cost of it ... which in the end is always the general public. Let alone adding yet another non-learning burden on schools and government staff.
These types of ideas may look good on paper and tick many "Politically Correct" / "Social Responsibility" boxes, but they are rarely ever properly thought through (despite politicians spending huge piles of money on "consultants" do the think thinking for them).
·

I was surprised, no, shocked to see that the majority think schools should supply free lunches to every student! They are Schools for learning, not Babysitters who feed everyone! ;-(
Also, I've seen firsthand how much the kids waste at school. I watched one young man throw in a garbage can a beautifully made submarine sandwich just because he didn't "like it". ;-(

Here is working great the kids in low descile schools get them brought in by local company's then they choose which they want pretty much that day off the trolley they found that kids paid more attention also alot of the families in low desciles there are some that can't afford food n rely on foodbanks so this also makes sure these kids have something in there Tummys least once a day that's nutritionist

·

There should be education from parents and teachers about wasting food, such a shame! Unused food can be donated to the homeless shelters. Oh, not from the kids' plates lol, the leftover food in the kitchen, rather than throwing it out.
·

Many schools are under funded now so adding this to their bottom line would put more pressure on them. However, a small charge to parents would be OK as long as it was not profit making. For instance, a sandwich would not cost much at all as a loaf of bread would make at least 10 sandwiches plus a couple of tomatoes and a bit of butter then cost would be very low. I guess it would depend on how genuine the school was in helping children have a meal mid day to keep them going. No junk food of course. Spaghetti would be a good meal and I am sure there are many cheap nutritious meals. Many kids do not have a lunch packed or money to pay for a tuck shop feed especially as their prices are very high these days.
·
Holly Cat
Yes! It's a part of the day, so everyone should eat. There are some schools that have gardens and grow their own vegetables. Also, several states have passed state laws allowing schools to serve meals to all students at no cost. By the way, I'm child-free and believe in this.
