Adult is the most important word in the question for me.

It’s entirely down to each set of unique circumstances

You said Adult children,so if they are working a conciliatory amount of board that is within their means. Usually goes towards the bills( electricity or water). Mine pays $50 per week and buys some food, but the majority I pay for. This is so he can save. He also pays for any subscriptions he wants and his mobile phone.

My son who is 21 still lives at home and has his own gaming room and separate bedroom and contributes to the main shopping, I buy the meat for the week, we work together in the household he helps me when things need to be done or I'm busy he's a great help, with the help he gives me I dont him charge board /rent as he already does enough for me.

Over here in Canada they call it room and board. But I see a lot of sides to this situation. Me personally, I lived with my dad for a long while, and he never charged me room and board, although he could have. Everyone's situation is different, but all he asked of me was to keep the place clean and not invite people over without his permission. Had to respect it, because even though it was his place, his name was on the lease, and he could've easily kicked me out.

Perfectly acceptable for the child/adult child to pay board/rent if they receive any type of government benefit or they work they SHOULD contribute, it teaches them skills for independence when they move out of home.

Firstly, it's Board they are paying, not Rent. Secondly, the adult child(ren) should pay something that covers their share of everyday expenses. If they can't pay dollars they should pay by doing jobs, maybe those that may otherwise cost their parent(s) dollars to have someone else do. The relative who is boarding has time and skills. It would benefit both to use them, I think.

It depends on the parent(s)'s financial situation. If they can afford to accommodate the children to live in the house with paying a small amount to help with everyday expenses, then the child(ren) can live rent-free. But as the majority of us are now struggling financially, I do believe it is justified for the child(ren) to pay rent

Every family situation is different. Paying rent - nah. Not unless there names are on the lease. Contributing to expenses -yes.

Of course! It's too expensive to have them sponging off you in this day and age if they choose to move back home.

My parents did it for me, they saved the money and gave it to me as a house deposit when I eventually moved out. It was a win win as I learnt how to live within a budget and has a sizeable deposit for my home

When I lived withmy Mum, I paid board (I only worked casual, so my hours varied)so it was $50 a week, plus I chipped in foe power, gas and phone. I didn't pay extra as I did my own washing and ironing. That was back in the late 80's early 90's.

Absolutely acceptable!! The younger generation needs to learn to pay their way and why should the parents pay for everything!! And I've raised 7 kids and they've turned out to be responsible adults

The adult child should OFFER to pay some rent...the parents SHOULD NOT have to ask.

...I moved out of my Mom's at 16...moved in with my Grandparents and paid them $250 a month!!! They didn't ask me to, I offered! Because of this, when I had issues in the future moving around so much, they ALWAYS allowed me to go back to them in between, and I paid them $500 a month, no questions asked. In turn, I was happy to do this because each time I went back, in between moves, I was able to care for them and be there for them to do lots of tasks. I would NEVER change a thing about how I lived :) May they both RIP now.

Exactly! I mean what better way to learn budgeting, responsibility, etc. It just makes sense. Parents do loads from birth to 18...after 18 it's time to get on with it, lol.

Parents spend their money as the children are growing up, so it's only right that they help the family when they grow up and have a job,

I have never actually charged my kids rent but both them had to put so much money away each week - daughter used hers as deposit on house. Both had to do jobs and help pay for food.

I payed Board when I was growing up from the first time I started to earn a wage, it makes you understand that you don't get anything for free & you should be helping to pay the bills.

First week/ month free; but rent doubles every time they return. Eventually it is cheaper for them (and their hangers on) to stay at a motel etc down the road.

Saving to buy a house? Fine but they still should pay for board and in any case they probably get far more than just a room, food etc. Someone has to pay for the Cleaning, the Laundry, Mum's Oh! Mary would love this or Harry would love that so she buys them nice, and sometimes not-so-little, Treats. When i started work I gave my Mum 1/3 of my Post Tax Wages,, 1/3 I saved for my first house and the other 1/3 was was for incidentals, entertainment with any left over when the next wages came went into savings. It worked beautifully for all of us.

Ok the penny dropped, the employer was probably no longer elligible to get any assistance towards paying his wage as the 6 month period was up for employing a long term unemployed person! Guess they just get a new person asap and do the sam again in another 66mths!!! Apart from all the crap son has replaced the washing machine, stove and lawn mower, paid for them in full ... so pitches in when he can ... cheers mb.

I can't seem to be able to live with anyone but my little dog anymore. If my 56 year old daughter needed a place to live, my Section 8 won't allow it, at least that's what I think? I couldn't deal with it at 77. She hasn't kept in contact, as much as I've tried to stay in touch with her. Oh, well... ;-(

Why make it even harder for them to do so by charging them rent or board?
