Discussion of the Day
Does going to university make one successful?
03-Jun-24
Does higher education determine success? Many assume that university is the determinant of success, but opinions have changed as many people now embrace the fact that there are other alternatives.

  • COMMON SENSE GOES A LONG WAY TO CREATING SUCCESS. ANY ONE CAN MEMORIZE
    ·
    • not necessarily as many are exceptional with their hands & doing a trade is very rewarding & a very successful vocation
      ·
      • Not necessarily. Some go to Uni cause they don't know what else to do
        ·
        • They still have to get a degree, that's definitely an achievement.
          ·
      • The step we choose for ourselves to determine the future

        • It may help you get an interview but surprisingly, it was a negative when I applied to the police service. The betting line was anyone with a degree was just taking an interim job until something better came along. I proved that wrong. It was a rewarding career that I stayed with for over 40 years, in a wide variety of areas of service, so was never bored or stagnant. Truth is, I would have done it for free. Nobody calls police because they are having a good day. I loved the challenges of fixing what needed done for them.

          • One of many career pathways, univerity degree is an important and useful. However, there are many other ways one can make their career which best suits them.

            • University diploma is not determinant of success, here is an example of early success: Alexandra Nechita was born in 1985 in Vaslui, Romania but moved with her family to the United States, two years later. She began drawing at the age of two and at the age of eight, she had her first art exhibit at a Los Angeles public library. At the age of 11, the 'Little Picasso' sold her first painting for $100,000.00 US dollars.

              • Not necessarily. The biggest thing about higher education is that it shows prospective employers that you were able to focus on an objective for an extended length of time and achieve its completion. Depending on the program, it provides knowledge that will further a career in a certain direction. For all programs, it shows that you have an interest in learning and furthering your development. Any future "success" depends on what you consider succesful - money, status, helping others, self-fulfillment..... Your success should be based upon your definition as opposed to someone else's. Being financially flush and moving up the food chain is all fine and good. However, if you are unhappy, then you really haven't achieved success. Whatever the definition of success, you should feel fulfilled.

                              • Nope. Going to university often makes those people think they deserve to be paid more simply because they have a piece of paper from a university - which more often than not has no connection to their job at all. University courses are often more academic and largely theoretical, book work, research level which bare little relation to the real world of employment. Often a better option is a technical institute which teaches real world skills and can even have work placement schemes as part of the course, where students go into real businesses for a time to gain actual workplace experience. (These days some technical institutes are also universities, so you get both the degree and the useful skills.) It is utterly ridiculous that so many governments keep trying to push everyone to go to university, only to then turn around and complain about not having anybody to do the "lesser" (often far more important) jobs and have to try to get people from other countries to come in to do those jobs. Similarly ridiculous is the current push to get all kids learning to 'code' (write computer programs). 🙄

                                        • NO. Universities today and for past 20 years in the WESTern countries have stopped education, and have been programming, They don't get marked or tested to see if they learnt anything. Unfortunately, the greater % are uneducated and believe they are owed everything for nothing. Todays standard is around about year 11 in the 60s. REALLY SAD,

                                          • No it does not guarantee success. It is how you apply yourself in the job you choose that can determine how well you do.

                                            • No. There's no honest nor direct correlation between Higher Education and "Success" (whatever that means). Whatever is learned, harnessed, practised, liked and deployed with discipline, could help to make 'some people' moderately comfortable and be able to pay their bills/taxes...maybe even find a bit for investments and retirement survival. being a life-long learner may be more useful, while universities could help with some foundation. I still prefer a doctor (M.D.) and Engineer with higher than secondary school education.

                                                  • No. There are lot of very successful people in the world who have never been anywhere near a university. Many of them have not even completed secondary school. It’s all about seeing opportunities and being able to take them when they present and knowing the right people to encourage and guide you with the big decisions in life. A lot of success comes to your door And it also depends on yiur own view of what successfulness is in life. Remember health is the top of the pole to being successful It’s not necessary to have money, it’s all about your own personal Ethics snd Goals and attaining them.

But there are some people who are pretty terrible at their jobs and cut corners. There are some who are in customer service that should never be in those jobs for instance. There are some lousy workers out there in the community and you do have to wonder how they manage to stay in their jobs, and how some even get promoted? That includes public servants as well those in private jobs. Lack of accountability is an issue that reflects badly on those people. As management often turns a blind eye to incompetent workers.
                                                                                  ·

                                                                                      ·

There are so many ways to measure success. It is possible to not have your own house or a car or a large bank account but be successful. So to answer your question NO higher education doesn't necessarily determine success.
                                                                                    ·

When I left school there were less places available to university. Nowadays...they have dumbed down a lot of the academic work. We even have many students from foreign backgrounds comming into Aus to study. Many are Asian. Many of those Asians don't have excellent English, and a recent report said many are only coming to aus for other purposes. Many are coming to aus as a deceptively excuse to study, and are actually looking to get jobs here and stay. It's a rort that's been allowed to happen by both the labour and liberal governments. Those University places should mostly be filled up by Aussies, but many now go the foreign students. Some who have failed and just are only here to find work. Many aren't even wealthy students. It's doubtful that they even contribute much financial money to the Aus economy. Much of their money-- that they pay in university fees, is actually money they earn in Australia, for paid jobs. The government's in Australia are lying when they say foreign students are contributing many millions to the Aussie economy. They might be doing so to help prop up universitys, but that's about all. It's a Ponzi scheme rort.
                                                                                      ·
                                                                                      • There are alternatives but probably not as much as there use to be. We don't have as much training on the jobs as there use to be. So many employers are the problem as they virtually force many to do secondary education when they leave high school. Depends what job you are looking to get. Some jobs in some sectors are too few, others, there is a need for more people to work in certain industry's. More builders are needed in Australia. More nurses and doctors, etc. I have some relatives that are making a successful living, and most didn't go to university, tho they did have to train for their particular well paid jobs. So there are other ways to get there.
                                                                                        ·
                                                                                        • This question has been asked before. Old forum. Of course it doesn't determine success. Many have failed at University. Many have dropped out. What determines success? Is it getting the degree that you aim for? Is it getting a well paid job when you finish your studies? Many would say it was both. But there's no guarantee with University degrees either. Many people are doing just fine without University degrees. And some are making great money without it. As long as you can make a decent living then I would call that a success. However it's changed a lot today as it's harder to get a well paid job without some sort of training. Take tradies for instance. They have to learn the skills to be able to work their particular trade. But once trained they have the skills to earn a very good living. So training is necessary for most recent jobs these days. Not necessarily University tho.
                                                                                          ·
