Discussion of the Day
Does going to university make one successful?
03-Jun-24
Does higher education determine success? Many assume that university is the determinant of success, but opinions have changed as many people now embrace the fact that there are other alternatives.

  • Yes it does, provided it's a degree that leads to something. I got a bachelor of Education, became a leading teacher and make $127,000 a year. My friend got an engineering degree and earns twice that. And then my sister who got an Arts degree is on unemployment benefits. Pick the right course that actually leads somewhere and you will be thankful in the long run.

    • I'm sure going to uni contributes to a person's success , but it's all in the power of the mind or lack of.
      ·
      • Not necessarily. If you are able to make a good career from what you've learned, then it's great, but if you never end up using your degree, it's wasted money. Some people do better at trade school or going right into a job - depends what you want to do. 2 of my children are teachers - they had to get their degrees. But college is not the be-all & end-all of life for many people.

        • Absolutely not! Unfortunately because you have a degree doesn’t mean you have common sense
          ·
          • No not always. There are many ways to be successful without university. The other thing is define success as it looks different to everyone. Stay true to yourself and your own goals and dreams.
            ·
            • Not necessarily, depends on the person. Often, universities turn out intelligent idiots
              ·
              • I think a University education is very good but I DO NOT BELIEVE it makes anyone better success wise. You may have more knowledge but it is how you use that knowledge and how caring you are as a person.
                ·
                • Depends...
                  ·
                  • Richard Branson apparently had learning difficulties. Not bad for a school failure. Wealth beyond what we can imagine.
                    ·
                    • Maybe but I know someone said it's not what you know how you knows. That how person got the job.

                      • Think too much emphasis is put on university education, knew top bank managers in the UK who didnt have a university educations as years ago it was mainly the children of wealthy families who attended uni unless you were lucky enough to win a scholarship. Looking at the idiots we have in government (particularly in Victoria) they all seem to have graduated with a degree in Art. I just canniot see the need for a degree in art.
                        ·
                        • It all depends on what you want to do - Lindsay Fox started work at 16 and never went near a university while he was building his empire!
                          ·
                          • It's harder today to climb to the top than decades back. Degrees help to get you opportunity. Past years you didn't need as much.
                            ·
                        • as long as you pass , succeeding at university means you are smart or hard working or both
                          ·
                          • It helps.
                            ·
                            • No
                              ·
                              • Higher education determines success in the form of a student walking across the stage to receive a paper document of the degree title with the university's logo on it. Three or so years of study are compressed into at least three words on a piece of paper. Where this paper leads depends on the personality of the individual. This could be the key to a higher-paying job or a career that involves less manual work. It's true that there are other alternatives besides uni. What makes students successful upon graduation depends on the connections made during university years. It's not the number of years studied, but how much involved and invested they have been.

                                • It depends on the degree and the need for such skills in business.

                                  • no. learning and wisdom is gained over time and experience where university is only one small part not an end in itself
                                    ·
                                    • It depends what your definition of success is. To some, living in a modest home and being happy is being successful.

                                      • not necessarily, depends where your ambitions lay.

                                        • How is success measured when a student leaving Uni can't get a job and is in debt.

                                          • No, one of the richest men in New Zealand did not finish high school and worked as a panel beater. Years later he is a billionaire. I think it depends a lot on the type of person you are.

                                            • Success is subjective...if u can say u r happy then u r a success, with or without uni.

                                              • The employers are virtually forcing people to get degrees because they won't train you for many jobs. It causes people into study they might not want to do. And there's the question of paying for it. Years of potential debt and no guarantee of a good job at the end.
                                                ·
                                                • That's something that employers rarely offer. It should be encouraged by government. Hands on is what counts and not bookwork so much.
                                                  ·
                                                  • I learned 30 years ago while retraining after the baby years that 90% of job are got because they know someone. Still shocked by this statistic.

                                                    • Work experience can be far better than university. espescially because it doesn't waste time.
                                                      ·
                                                      • higher education might make you smarter and able to get a good paying job but it doesn't make you any better than anyone else, I never finished high school and went straight to a job at age 14, raised 2 kids on my own after my marriage broke up and also brought my own home with no help from anyone several years later..To me personally, that is being successful in life
                                                        ·
                                                        • No. Hard work makes you successful. Only 1 of my kids finished college and he's a police officer. The two that make the most money only went to junior college. They're all good at what they do and work hard!
                                                          ·
                                                          • A university degree should only be necessary if you want to be a doctor, solicitor, engineer or the like. Anyone wanting to be a tradie shouldn't need a uni degree. There are people out there who have done very well at uni but never held down a job, then there are the well educated morons, of which we have many.

In Oz you can gain high quality in most other fields through Tafe or traineeships and get work experience at the same time. I have friends who are over 50 and are professional students, highly qualified, never worked in their field of choice, just keep going back to Uni.

                                                              • No! but it puts off working too hard, for a couple of years. Sadly, then reality sets in.
                                                                ·

                                                                  ·

                                                                    ·
                                                                    • Some are wasting their life getting a degree. We have people going on to become teachers and then they moan, " it's just too hard"! Many are leaving the profession. Waste of money being taught and you cannot get your time back. People need to be certain about what they want to do before they take up long study sessions at uni. We will need more technology workers in the future. So University's are not producing enough of the right workers. They only care about the money they receive.
                                                                      ·

I've heard it said that if you find something you really love doing, you'll never have to work a day in your life. As for me, I'm loving being retired! ;-D
                                                                        ·
                                                                        • I think it may in certain circumstances but I believe it’s what you put into any thing you do that has more success
                                                                          ·
                                                                          • Higher education can give you a good chance of gaining a position within a company of your chosen career, however isn’t always a certainty for success. All of us can be successful at what we strive to become, whether it be a wife and mother, a teacher, a nurse, a politician, an artist, a musician, a sports personality…
                                                                            ·
                                                                            • University means a lot of things to different people. The achievement of higher education means a lot to some people and little to others. It does help with job prospects, and further employment.
                                                                              ·

                                                                                ·
                                                                                • These days it’s really doesn’t matter as long as you are street smart and book smart.
                                                                                  ·
                                                                                  • Not necessarily, attending university does not guarantee a successful life. Many people have been very successful without a degree, and there are many others who have earned several degrees who have failed to apply their degrees to become successful. It's all about how you apply your education to obtain your goals.
                                                                                    ·
                                                                                    • The only things that determine success are skill / ability, determination, work ethic, and some luck. Of course, "success" does mean different things to different people. Some people would say having huge piles of money and a luxury lifestyle is a sign of "success", but it is usually simply a sign plain greed, often at someone else's expense.
                                                                                      ·

                                                                                              ·

                                                                                                ·
                                                                                                • So much depends on the individual person and what they want to achieve in life. University is not the be-all and end-all for everyone. I saw my grandparents as successful. One did their 3 years of high school, the other left at the end of primary school to become a drover with their dad. They both went on to work in factories and droving before their families settled in the area where they met and formed their relationship which resulted in my grandfather buying a house and asking my grandmother to marry him (he had to buy a house before he could propose). They had 5 children, 15 grandkids and 30+ great-grandchildren, plus were married for 54 years when he passed away.

My brother has tried twice and left after it got too much so he doesn't have his degree. You can get a degree in arts, history, science so it does depend on what you want to do with the degree you are trying to get. Say if you wanted to be a rocket scientist you may need to do a degree in some thing like engineering for an example. I have certainly met quite a few GP's that have had no people skills and you kind of wonder why they became a GP in the first place. Money can only be the answer sadly. Maybe if they didn't get their degrees they may have become the local metre inspector or a politician in Canberra.

Just imagine how many graduates there are year after year across the globe. Degrees are a dime a dozen. It seems like every schmuck with a little determination can get one (if they have the money). In my opinion, university is little more than an endurance test that deals with your own interests. If you're paying attention, the actual education that you receive is quite limited to your specialty. This is not a bad thing but as you advance through your studies you learn more and more about less and less. Pick the wrong degree in the beginning and you'll still have the wrong education in the end, but you will have benefited from the University experience. No one can ever take that away from you.

Firstly, how does one measure success? Many ways of being successful do not require a university education. A degree can open many doors, but not all doors. It is not a golden bullet that will magically ensure success. Often the connections one makes at university are more beneficial than the actual learning that occurs there. Many people with degrees have failed to find success because of the lack of personal attributes, such as determination and resourcefulness. So many things contribute to success.

The world is full of people who have gone to University wasted their time getting a Bachelor of Arts degree, some wasting even more time doing a PhD using some absurd and meaningless subject as their thesis and then when it is all over they adopt the attitude that "I did not spend 5 years at University to throw hamburgers at McDonald's" as a reason not to get a productive job. The Universities have only themselves to blame because they give people the title "Professor" for the most insignificant jobs, The title "Doctor" has been so degraded that it is now meaningless.

None of my children went on to complete higher education.
