Traffic lights
Hayam M12-Aug-21
Yellow light means:
A. Slow down or
B. Speed up?
We all know it means A so why do people do B?

It does mean slow down, however it depends on the situation. For example IF the light is YELLOW and about to turn RED and there is a great big truck not far behind you who could not stop in time if you stop, then you would obviously speed up to AVOID being hit by that truck ( or other car / motor bike etc ).

Sometimes it's safer to just keep on going, better on your brakes and there could be someone right up your bumper who expects you to keep on going. It's a split second thing, usually I make the right call but not always!

I was at a turn left lane with traffic going both ways at the intersection. I could not move out into the traffic until the lights changed and the traffic going north stopped. However, this idiot behind me ran up my behind and was yelling and screaming at me to go. Not sure where he wanted me to go. This happens at the traffic lights a lot these days. Morons high on something. He was still screaming when I was able to move. Needless to say I did not get out and there was minimal damage to my car but anyway and not worth confronting this person as I am sure I would have been smashed by this violent man.

So far I know the law states that if the light turns yellow you must slow down and stop it its safe to do so(if you have enough stopping distance)However if you are that close that its impossible to stop in time you can proceed. But dont speed up as many cameras are red light and speed as well.Usuall the red light camera gets triggered0.3 seconds after the light turns red. That the way I learnt it

it sounds that some states don't have the flashing amber to warn the drivers that the lights will be changing to amber so they can start to slow down before you get to the intersection and these days every set of lights have cameras, and red lights regardless to the situation a fine will be issued

Upper Hutt's river road (SH2) has just recently installed the amber flashing warning lights system on both north and south approaches at Totara park lights and certainly seems to benefit all drivers particularly the loggers

It depends where you're: if approaching a traffic light then slow down, but if in the middle of the intersection then speed up to avoid red light

I always do A these days. Couldn't afford the fine for going through the lights illegally. If someone behind me hits me, then he has to pay.

I got rear ended at the lights and asked the guy "Did you not see my brake lights?" and his reply was "No, I was only watching the light." He wanted it to stay yellow so he could get through. What a doofus.

We should prepare to stop on anber. However if a car is too close behind and is nit intending to stop then we need to speed up to get out of the way.

Some people run red lights, they don't seem to care. They just want to get from A to B as fast as they can and don't care about the consequences. Many a time you see people going over the amber light because there is a car so close behind them they would get rear ended if they stopped.

There are two types of action here. 1.Too late to slow down. If you brake sharply someone will smash you in the back. 2. Simply hurrying. Forgetting the principle "Start getting ready earlier to ensure you do not need to speed at the traffic lights".

The Police are very aware of that though...my teenage (Of course!) niece got pinged for doing just that a few years back, just a warning I think.. though she did lose her licence at around that time. Not just an age thing...was in a vehicle with a 60+ driver recently...went through not one but 2 red lights.....

If the car behind is too close you need to go. If the weather is wet you can't slam the brakes too hard either. Sure some are just idiots but there are legitimate reasons to go through. Yellow gives a warning that it will change to red, it is up to the driver to determine if they can safely stop.

This is allowed. Where the problem is, is with the 5 cars behind you who speed up to go through because they are feel entitled and lazy. One intersection(3 roads part of State highway 1)here I use often and have lost count of the number of times I could have been T boned in drivers door by vehicles running late yellow and into the red, this is car and often heavy truck & trailers cos they dont want to stop then have to grind up the hill. By watching lights change I can tell when my green is coming and I then check the road these drivers could come from and hesitate if necessary rather than moving off when I get a green, Have complained to authorities twice so far, last time they got a right bollocking. They seemed to be taking it seriously at the time(but didnt do anything that would make an immediate difference) and nothing really has changed

Those lights are principally intended to control the movement of vehicular traffic such as bikes, motor bikes., motor cars, trucks, buses etc., whereas those Walk, Don't Walk lights are called Pedestrian Lights because they control pedestrian movement across roads.

A lot of drivers think of it as a got to rush to get through before it turns red so they dont have to stop. I'm a definite stop driver because I do not want to cause an accident and I dont want a ticket for running the red light. I dont like the idea of wasting money with getting tickets. I dont know if you get points or whatever they do.

You do not have to slam the brakes on of course as if it changes just as you hit the intersection or as you are crossing it then this is lawful. If you speed up from further back to beat the red light then this is illegal.
