Discussion of the Day
Entry into the country?
Raelz02-Mar-25
Canada has very strict entry rules for applying for citizenship there, & a 5 year process. Australia s is much shorter with a basic, simple multiple question test. Shouldn t the gift of being able to come and live in peace and with all the chances and freedom in the world be a prize to work hard for and appreciate? These days people are being let in who don t hold the same values, and it s changing our society. I think the tests should be harder and the wait times longer, and people should prove themselves worthy more. Lie detector tests and psychologist assessments included, is this going to far?

  • It is hard to become a resident in Australia.

  • It is not that simple to enter Australia. We have to pay a $250 application fee and many applications are rejected after waitng for 3 months. There is also a 52 page application form that has to be filled out.
    ·
    • So you should!
      ·
  • People come from other countries to try to get a better life. No country is without its criminals so I don't Know why people are acting as if everything is just rosy until immigrants enter. BTW, this is God's country(world), on loan to us to see how we treat one another. Sad to say, we have failed the test.
    ·
    • They should make their own countries better than sponging off those who were already born here and contribute. We don't need imported criminals too. You are F nuts!
      ·
  • Presidential candidates are not required to even have an IQ test. Surely that's far more important than psych testing an immigrant.

    • I had a green card, which expired in December,I have closed down three warehouses in USA cos of Trumps tariffs,my wife is a US citizens,BUT has been given ''permission' to enter AUD cos of myself,BUT the previous LNP Govt didnt do this.....the old entrance was complicated,BUT at least if a migrant is able to speak some English that is a necessity BUT unfortunately its not policed

      • Now days it appears that the government questions comprise of, Will you undercut the current wage system? Will you enroll for a course you will never attend more than a couple of times? Will you work answering phones, so that only people who speak the language from your home country can understand, nobody else matters?

          • People entering any nation need to do so legally and with the intent of a short stay or visit or the seek citizenship which means they renounce all affiliation or loyalty to their nation of origin. Anyone climbing in through a window or the back door uninvited is a thief. If someone wants to become a citizen of another nation they need to have specific things they must do to be given citizenship and align their values with that of their nation There should be tests and longer wait times to vet them and get to know them and their values, beliefs and more and if they will meld well as a new citizen of the nation they are applying for and be will to abide sincerely by those rules.

            • We do, Mo,we do! Australia needs better immigrants, we get too many dumb 3 world people's and their families. Should be harder to get here.
              ·
          • I think we let too many people into our country that don't have the same values or anything like our culture. When they get into Australia so easily, they make sure we give up our culture to accommodate them. multiculturalism does not work. When we came we had to intregrate and we were happy to do so. We came because we loved the lifestyle and the culture. We need to get our Australian culture back.

Wearing Bikinis at the beach, new immigrants complained. Christmas carols. Supermarkets and Stores not having the navtivity scene. Being told we can't do so many things that we had done for generations. Not narrow minded at all.

Our culture was never boring, its now stifled. narrow minded if you don't choose do change your life to suite new immigrants. I believe when you immigrate to a new country you have chosen to change your lifestyle to the new country that you want to live in, otherwise what is the point of your immigrating.
              ·
            • . Christmas carols, bikinis (seriously, have you been to a beach lately?), nativity scenes are still happening. You know years ago old white men complained about bikinis and measured women’s swimsuits. That is a culture I am happy is over Your lifestyle is under no threat because of immigrants.

          • Yes, I think we need to change the requirements to become a US Citizen.
            ·
            • I think the whole process needs to be seriously looked at and rectified. If they come to Australia and start protesting then send them back to where they came from, if you live here or in any other country you abide by there rules and regulations or leave.
              ·
              • Harder tests are fine if they're fair. Do other countries do full psychologist assessments and put people on lie detectors? If others don't then it's probably going too far, and taxpayers would probably have to take on the extra fees.
                ·
                • Many countries do, Australia is one of the few who don't.

If they have issues should sort themselves out on their own bit of dirt (soil) before trying to disrupt what little peace people have found when seeking a better way of life!! AND thanks for your "like" on my contributions ... hope it made sense .. tried to keep it as short as possible ... cheers, mb.

              • The myth of Canada's strict entry needs to be put to rest. There are many ways to avoid the bureaucracy here. Temporary worker visas that become permanent through lack of oversight. student visas that can be wheedled into residency, refugees, escapees from America, and on and on. Our immigration policy is a joke. Trudeau wants to inflate population at all costs, putting undue burden on health care, education and transportation; a burden we all shoulder. He needs more of us paying taxes to support his 9 year spending and traveling jaunts.
                ·
                • The same in Australia. They con the immigration department through their immigration lawyers, and that's paid through taxes from the public purse. Our major parties would not have a clue about what goes on.

              • My Story - Jan 1957 escaped, had to get to the border and find where the barbed wire had been rolled back and cross the border however if you were caught on your side in you home country you you were "fair game"and could be shot by either side. Once on the other side of the border and got spotted shots were fired over your head from the "Watch Tower" and if caught you were commanded to stop walking and if you obeyed you stayed alive and were taken to the Watch Tower, given warm drink and were able to change into dry clothes if you had any. From there you were taken to a place and got "processed" and for the next few months tossed from one "camp" to another til a country said they'd take you in. However it was a long process of being "really, really processed" Had to be sound of mind and body, no limbs missing so you wouldn't be a health burden to your adoptee country. So there was a time when I was fit, healthy and sound of mind, by some MIRACLE!!! Anway Australia took us in, it was a very long boat (Liner) trip in those days .. we finally arrived in November. Placed in a Reception Centre, got fed and watered then because dad managed to find some sort of employment was moved to a different part and from that time on had to pay for our lodgings and the meals that were provided. ASAP under our own steam had to find a better paying job and own home and got out of there completely. I think it was after 3 years could apply fo Citizenship which my dad got and the children got it automatically (but I still had to prove who I was before I could receive the Age Pension, had to obtain my Birth Certificate .. very long process" as I didn't have a Driver's Licence with photo as proof, even though had been paying tax since 1965, it all meant nothing. My mum who thought she automatically was included on dad's citizenship papers had to get naturalised separately some after we moved to South Australia in 1963. I think that now "children like me" have citizenship called "by conferral descent" although no official paperwork was sent to us notifying of this ruling .. I actually came across this doing Online Surveys when it was offered as an option of who or what you are. So what happened to doing proper checks and why are killers and criminals getting let in so easy and people waiting on housing and urgent mediical procedures pushed further down the waiting list!!!?????????????

Yes, there should be stricter rules for them, like they cannot enter into our countries if they have a criminal record of any sort, they can enter if they have a job waiting for them. They cannot enter our countries if they have a mental problem, as if they have a mental problem that makes things harder for our mental health people we have enough of our own people in our countries with mental problems for mental health to deal with. Our countries are over loadered with people from other countries I think it is time to stop them from coming into our countries any way

                    • Those are some very good points. I emigrated from the US to Canada when the World was a little more relaxed (late 1970's). Things have changed so much since then. I was able to get my Canadian Citizenship through a parents birth as a British Subject, grandfathered in as a Canadian when their Province joined Canada (they were living elsewhere in Canada at-the-time). There was a nice 'loop hole' that I was able to use and not have to swear allegiance to Canada so I was able to keep my US Citizenship. The US does not like it if you swear an allegiance to another Country, they tend to take your US Citizenship away. Things were much different, back then.

                          • I've sensed the hatred and hurt that many use to describe (recent) refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers, but it seems as though so many of us allegedly-upstanding-citizens don't have helpful understandings/Truths about each and every case of the recent newcomers. Not all newcomers are slaves/criminals/convicted felons/adjudicated rapists; most do work and twice as hard in meaningful areas of the Canadian society to uphold the economies they walk and breathe in. There are many Canadians living abroad in various countries too and it wouldn't be fair to call all of them nuisance in those societies either. Since living as a Canadian citizen, not one newcomer has tried to take away my home, school, health services, worship spaces, vehicles/parking lots, language nor skin colour. I know that Canada is far better than mere hatred and hurt as the current US administration seems to like doing. This seems to be a trend without much wisdom or hindsight- to get common people fighting against each other.....while governing bodies would then lose sight/responsibilities of serving their countries properly, and instead misappropriating the countries resources. I couldn't have guessed that the ongoing hatred of new comers was to distract and disrupt societies, create such a distraction, while the 1% go hunting for rare earth minerals. Oh my how far we have come! I hope Canada will uphold its laws for the lawless (citizens or not) and continue to extend compassion to those truly in need, as best as we can. Who knows when or if we Canadians will need a place of refuge should our world gets turned fully upside down. Best to all in 🇨🇦

                              • Some are talking about crime committed against others in Canada by immigrants. The numbers are 10% of Canadians are criminals, and the numbers of immigrants from any reason vary from 9.7-14.3% committing crimes. So the numbers aren't that high compared to born-in-Canada number, even lower for certain crimes. That means the vast majority of people coming - for any reason they flee their country of origin - are decent and good citizens and contributing. Canada is a great country to live and grow and thrive in, and I say to any who want or need to come, "welcome home". It's a very large country with room for a whole lot more.

                                  • I'm Canadian and agree with you. I hate what my ancestors did to the Indigenous peoples here. I won't celebrate Canada Day because I usually don't feel that proud of it. I expect this year I will be very happy to! I do think of the Indigenous on that day and many other days. However, on the other hand it is a big country and it is a good country as far as the day to day goes. I welcome immigrants with love and open arms. It's not 'my' country to say who is worthy to get in. The 5-year process isn't a thing as far as I know. I say let anyone in who is having a hard time in another country; whether because of torture or other inhumanities, fear, hunger, war zones, biases over race or anything else, and now especially fear of what your current leader is doing to your country. Yes, you can read that "Trump/Musk/Vance/etc". I truly believe Canada is one of the best countries in the world. It was an unfair and brutal path to get us here but we are free and have decent health care. Yes, a littly ranty. I'm sorry for that.

                                • Trump is doing the right thing in America by reducing illegal immigration. The last stupid government let in many thousands btw. Australia needs to do the same. Only last year we had illegal and dangerous criminals released into the community. There isn't enough housing to go around either.

                                  • I agree Raelz, but it's much too easy to get citizenship in Aus and has been like that for decades. You should not be allowed unless you fit a certain criteria. You should not be allowed unless you are needed, not just because you want to come here and bring your entire relatives. We do need some skilled immigrants, if we don't have enough doctors and nurses, engineering workers, or technical persons, etc, but we have brought into many low skilled people. Maybe too many refuges as well. This Labor government has bought into many migrants and they are a burden on our society. Taxes have to pay for their welfare, unless they can get jobs, but many seem incapable of working. Some can't even speak English, or hardly any. So they aren't much use to our country unless they can prove their worth. Many have not proven to be of much use to Australia however. Some turn out to be criminals. Those people should be deported. It should take at least 10 years for being able to get citizenship. It's too easy to get. Too many of them from poor or bad backgrounds. Our government is a joke. They let in criminals and welfare bludgers. No hope for Australia these days. Stupid government!

                                    • I am the daughter of Italian Migrants and who appreciated the values of being an Australian Citizen with hard work I might add. However, it my view today, that not enough scrutiny is being used to vet some migrants from countries who have radical ideas and will not conform to Australian values.

                                      • Since America was founded on welcoming anyone & everyone...YES that would be going too far. After all...we are ALL immigrants of some form or fashion.

                                        • Not sure about all that, but there is not enough housing for the current population. That is pitting people against one another.

                                          • Agreed as I saw that scenario too. Most Newcomers didn't just happen, so the 3 levels of govt in Canada must have known there's a shortfall in affordable housing development, employment opportunities, doctors and nurses required, pension payments needed etc. Therefore, to add immigrants/newcomers would have only exposed/helped these govt and developers to fix these shortfalls. And now that immigration has slowed down, notice that we still don't yet have more affordable housing, enough doctors and nurses jobs etc. Fighting each other and spreading lies/hatred isn't a useful nor wise strategy; Canada is far better than that!😁

                                          • No I tend to agree. The divisions caused by cultures who do not align with ours has bought about hate, crime, and violence. People might say this is harsh but I think not. I would like to add some of these people are so grateful to be in this country and are great citizens. Unfortunately, as usual it is the few who cause the problems. How to vet these undesireables I have no idea.
