Death Penalty

Should we still have the death penalty for people that commit horrendous crimes like murder and rape?

  • Yes. No questions asked.

    • What are people's thoughts regarding Japan has just put to death of a male (found guilty of all charges), the male Raped a number of women, then cut all their bodies up, I believe 1 or 2 women were not dead when he cut them up. This is the first criminal put to death in Japan for many years. I fully support the penalty given by the Court. What do you think ?

      • I do have mixed reaction on this. Yes, death penalty is cruel, but did the person kill a person and if yes, was the killer a mentally ill or so. That is why, when I took Criminal Law course, we cannot sentence a person to death (there is no death penalty in Canada anyway). Criminal are send to have a Psychiatrist assessment first to see if they are deem to stand trail before any punishment are imposed.

          • currently in Au life= 7 years all meds are FREE, you pay for nothing and your allowed to earn money { it's not much but it would be slave labour money}. All the leather work you see on police horses are jail made except the saddle. Hey, their learning a new trade for when their released. But I'm not sticking up for them, you do a crime you do adult time, kids included.

              • I’m in 2 minds. I’m fully aware that the punishment of no freedom is funded by taxpayers and it’s not cheap (disagree some says prison is just a downgrade of hotel, it’s freedom that they don’t have). I am also aware that not everyone in prison are guilty, some was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, plus lack of funds to fight for themselves. If rape is serious enough for their lives, I know many people should be dead long ago (way too many girls have been raped but doesn’t have the courage or means to stand up for themselves)… thanks to a masculine law enforcement culture. I have followed some court cases, I hate to be the jurors to put an unknown person to dead. If the argument in court was biased and I made a mistake, I would be just as guilty as a criminal to cause a death. I like to think most (if not all) people should be given resources and chance to thrive and be better. Who should deserve the position to be in charge of another person’s life?

                • No - but life imprisonment without parole would be appropriate. No-one has the right to take a life - final judgement is in God's hands and we are all accountable to Him.

                  • Yes but we should do so immediately upon the last plea running out. Otherwise they could escape or be pardoned by a soft-hearted governor!

                    • YES it would dimmish the numbers that are clogging up the jail overcrowding Life in jail is only 7 years!

                      • Yes definitely if there is absolutely no doubt that they did the crime

                        • Yes absolutely 💯 do the crime pay the price an eye for an eye

                          • The death penalty serves a useful purpose. Incarceration for life is expensive, does not lead to rehabilitation of the criminal, and is a waste of space and resources. If an animal bites or attacks, it is euthanized. Should we instead cage the offending animal for the rest of its life?
                            ·

                                • No. The death penalty is nothing more than legalized murder, and what does it achieve? Sometimes people who commit a crime decide that if convicted they will face the death penalty so they kill their victim. I believe they should be punished, and not the holiday type of punishment they get nowadays. Not only should they go to gaol, but they should also have to make restitution. If you steal a car and destroy it why shouldn't you have to pay the person who owned the car? If you kill a bread winner why shouldn't you have to contribute to the family's upkeep? I bet if people got hit in the pocket they might think twice about going out and committing another crime.

                                  • No. Life is life is life. Someone in my family was rped and murdered and I still don't believe in the death penalty. It's not our life to take, it's God's.

                                          • Yay or Nay, a hard question to answer. Your gut says yes but history says no because of the corruption that is out there in those who investigate and prosecute the crimes.

                                              • No! The justice system is about money. The poor will be the main ones on death row. Families suffer on both sides. The cycle will continue with anger, hatred etc. There have been far too many convicted of murder and found innocent years down the track. Their lives ruined but our system thinks money will solve that! Improve sentencing and the mental health system would be a great start.

                                                          • Why do we keep hearing on the news about how some one who has been behind bars for 10-20 years is suddenly found innocent. Or make such a big on going deal about a murder. It's all just money. Why insnt the death penalty a murder too then. I don't think so because the system is so stuffed up they might kill someone by mistake. Police are still continually killing people by mistake already in brisbane darwin and alice springs. Why kill more? If in doubt destroy a Neo robot.

But the person is keep in the cell for 23 hours a day, only allowed out for some exercise and a shower for 1 hour. Does not have a TV in the cell, has limited access to other media (no internet) only approved books. Some my it to harsh but it is better than being dead. And life means life.

Glad you have faith in the authorities. And a couple years ago one guy who killed his sister out of jealousy went before a panel of so called psychologists - claimed he fit to be released - first thing he did was MURDER HIS OWN MOTHER.

Killed his 3 young gorgeous boys aged 7, 4 and 3 at home in front of his wife as some kind of revenge against her ,then sat on the doorstep calm as a cucumber with the rifle next to him and the kids lying in the front yard. One even managed to run away yet he went after him and dragged him back. Premeditated it was also proven . After following the case I found it unbelievable no one's knocked him off inside already. He was like a zombie on arrest with a few crocodile tears in court mnths later and initially plead Not guilty!

Grizzly crimes deserve a grizzly end .Why spend years upon years keeping these psychopaths fed and housed when there is clearly no remorse , no body for the families to bury and say goodbye to nor any kind of rehabilitation signs in the jail itself. I would give them a 5 year period of so called humanitarian grace where they undertake intense work to repay community, in-depth ongoing interrogations to get victims answers , solitary confinement inbetween , and the distinct timelines all laid out for them if they cannot show any signals of reform in order to live . This is of course for the most heinous of crimes that have been unequivocally proven beyond doubt to have been perpetrated by said offender. A good example ...finding someone's body parts in offender's bedroom cupboard perhaps? Followed by a confession with more gladly shown to police on discovery of .. ..

Keeping these individuals alive in jail with all the benefits whilst the victims have to live with the circumstances of losing a loved one is immoral in my opinion. Then if these perpetrators get cancer or some other disease they are treated with the best on offer and expect to be let out of jail for the remaining time left - NOOOO ..... Child molesters are another area that needs more done. The children have to live all their lives with the aftermath and these creeps get a few years and are then let out to do their ugly worst on more children. Firstly, I would castrate them and then they would go to jail for life without parole and not have any privileges. Jail is supposed to be a punishment - let the punishment then fit the crime. Rape seems to be minimized by the courts. The poor girl/woman is basically raped over and over again in the court. Her life is paraded and maligned and twisted whereas the rapist is portrayed as the good guy even though he might have a history of rape on record but this cannot be bought up. If it is so for the rapist then the poor girl should also be given this privilege. Many women get raped and just won't go to court due to the treatment they receive so the guy keeps on doing it and more women are damaged by his or in some cases their actions. I know some stupid women cry rape and this is also abhorrent.

Why should the taxpayer spend $$$$$ supporting them at all. Support should be given to people / organizations connected to the victims ("those who are left to pick up the pieces").

The fact that they are feed/given a bed have the gym, pool, tv, computer billard table where does punishment fit in, its our tax money that is wasted to keep them in the community, almost hotel style while innocent individuals or families who have been touched by these awful crimes need to live in constant fear with the pain for the rest of their lives. there is no justice

Many now favor life without parole as a safer, ethical alternative.

Why pay to keep these inferior types of humans, sometimes let out to do the same thing again. Where is the justice in that? Our prisons are too soft look at South America they do not stand for pussyfooting around. Trouble here in Australia prison life is too good and inmates live better than the poor homeless people. eg TV, good meals where is the punishment??

NO... Look at the youth here. Completely out of control. Some have come from other countries or might be 1st generation and they know nothing will happen to them. A slap on the wrist. They have bought in the new law 'adult crime adult time' but not sure if this is being implemented as daily we are seeing on the news the machete and knife wielding thugs slashing and stabbing and robbing and destroying businesses, cars and lives. Get them off the streets and do serious time for their crimes. If they have come from another country then they also get deported after time spent. It is time to make Australia safe again from the thugs whether homegrown or new arrivals.

The same magic voice allowed the jews escaping from bondage in Egypt to wander around the desert until they all died. The same voice destroted the world with a flood. Any more salient points?

In New Zealand we don’t have it and our politicians (across all parties) are too whimpy for even a reasoned public debate. Meanwhile people continue to die or have their lives ruined due to these offenders constantly creating more victims.
