Discussion of the Day
For Whiter Whites and Brighter Colours ... Yeah!
APB22-Apr-23
So you decide on a washing liquid or powder for your washing machine...but however much you paid...you really need another additive to get your clothes really clean ... and the colours bright ... and then you need another product to wash your machine AFTER washing your clothes ... this is getting really silly ... why not just have one product that does the lot ...or are we just being conned? What do you think?

  • What's with the top loader powder and the front loader powder .? And now we have the 2 in 1front and top loader powder!
    ·
    • Some it's the fault of modern day washers too, I don't think they get stains out as well as the older style washing machines that use to be around.
      ·
      • I think its a con think you can get the same results by beating your clothes on a rock with a bit of soap and if you can't , invest in some dye and change the color of your item of clothing, looking at the jeans i see walking around looks like people use rocks instead of soap anyways

        • These Washing Machine Cleaners are possibly the biggest money making Scam of the Century! We are told there are people who cannot get Fresh, Clean Drinking Water yet the manufacturers of these products, all of whom make claims to be being Environmentally Responsible, want us to waste literally hundreds of litres of it to clean a machine which has already been cleaned and then rinsed up to 3 times when we do our laundry! People are complaining about the Cost of Living, in particular the cost of Electricity, and these greedy, irresponsible manufacturers expect us to waste more money and Energy using their products to perform a totally unnecessary job!

                • Borax does all that and conditions water softening it in a washer , and a pool. It makes detergent work harder, and as well as brakes up to removed algae. Why use vinegar when it eats seals, and who wants a leaky seals in a washer that holds water, for cloths or dishes

                  • Most softeners can actually be used for washing clothes not just for softening clothing, especially for woolen clothes.
                    ·
                    • Definitely being conned. If the washing machine was dirty, your clothes would also be dirty.
                      ·
                      • I use powder for washing clothing and white vinegar for as softener especially for towel. They are always soft and fluffy and vinegar for disinfection. No need for all the different products
                        ·
                        • Most, if not all, of those Fabric Softeners contain Silicone and they should not be used with Towels. I bought some new towels - Sheridan - from one of our most up-market Department Stores and the Sheridan Lady told me: Never use Commercial Fabric Softeners on towels because they coat the fibres which makes them less able to absorb water but to use Plain old White Vinegar.
                          ·
                      • I use washing liquid because it's much easier to measure out. Just use the cap I use cheap stuff. I have used vinegar instead of softener for years.. I have never washed my washing machine...

                        • My Samsung washing machine has a feature called wash tub, designed to clean the machine when it thinks it needs doing, approximately once a month. Better still, no chemicals are required to perform this, all done with cold water. The drum doesn't even seem to smell after different loads of washing. I do all my washing with a powder and use a spray on prewash solution for any stains that may require it. Works great!!
                          ·

                            • I don't bother about washing my washing machine but we have always added something for the whites. For those too young to remember mum added a blue bag to keep the whites looking white. I personally use different detergents for my washing. I use powder, liquid and tablets depending upon the load. All dirty washing isn't the same.

                              • No it isn't.

                                • We are being conned! I have studied this issue and my readings tell me that a little detergent goes a long way, especially if the washing machine is not filled to capacity. Following this advice I now do more loads with less in them, washing like colours together and the results are pleasing. If I have a stubborn stain I spot clean this prior to washing, it seems to work for me. Same goes for dishwashers, less detergent works better on smaller loads. the best cleaning product is the one our Grandma's used, mix some baking soda with white vinegar, works well and cheap as chips. Good Luck

                                    • It's a bit of a con however I have found adding a cap full of Sard definitely helps make the whites look less stained and smell cleaner.I stopped using powder a few years ago and now only use liquid surf or whatever one is cheaper,no more white powder residue left on clothes.
                                      ·

                                      • Use your liquid or powder and a color catcher. Then it all comes bright and clean. Yep we are probably being conned, but it seems to work

                                        • It is mostly b.s. that the manufacturers spin to make customers believe that they need their products. No, you don't need a big load of chemicals to clean your clothes, natural products work just as well if not better & are so much better for our planet too. The ad on tv that really pisses me off right now is the one that says you need this product to make your clothes cleaner so you don't throw them away and harm the planet by buying new clothes. Both are bad for the planet but they want you to believe that their product is what you need to save the planet....it is not, it is just as bad & full of harmful chemicals that you are pouring down the drain.

                                                            • I'm not allowed near the washing machine unless it needs fixing, the wife went crazy once upon a time when I did the washing as I just threw everything into the machine and washed it, she insisted that colours and whites had to be washed separately and my reply was washing is washing they all go through the same process so I'm not allowed anywhere her washing machine, stove, microwave or whatever other appliance she lays claim to. So to keep her happy I just ignore those devices in the house and in return she doesn't touch my Snap On Tools unless she is asked to get one.

                                                                • I think it's a marketing trick to sell more products. Look how haircare has snowballed! It used to be just shampoo and only one or two brands to pick from. Yes, I remember those days! Now it is overwhelming just to pick a shampoo and conditioner and wonder what else you need. Do styling products really work? Does shampoo and conditioner with Biotin really making my hair thicker? How do I know? I can't compare it to how it would be if I used other products for months. I think it's all to flood the market! If your clothes are clean and fresh, and you're happy with that. Then stop there. Personally, I like to add softener to the water for a clean, fresh smell! Why clean a washer that is clean? That's nuts!
                                                                  ·

Don’t know if there is much difference between brands though?? The home brand concentrate is a $1.30 and does the job for me. I don’t use it on cloths or towels though.

We don't add any thing to the clean as it recommends not to and it's quite easy. We are on tank water so we used to try and skip the clean wash but I think it has to do it for a reason so we just do it now. Have no problems with the machine or our clothes not being clean. Sure we get stains but hey no one out here to see what we look like so we just don't care really.

To keep your machine smelling Fresh, don't leave wet, washed clothes in it and leave the door open after you have removed them.

As for maintaining colours I just use the appropriate setting on the washing machine so no need for extra chemicals, plus separate colours into groups rather than wash all together so that they don't become dull. Woollens and delicates get a special wash liquid as well so they last longer.

Two, I use detergent-free washing (laundry) balls - which are good for a least 10,000 washes. The detergent-free washing (laundry) balls are just as good (?) as detergent (Haha), great for your washing machine (no need for washing machine solutions), and even better for the environment than detergents. Last (FYI): washing (laundry) balls can be bought at Amazon.com (be sure to read the directions on how to use them).

Are we washing our clothes too long and too frequently? Do we really need dryer sheets as well? If you want whiter clothes, put your whites outside to dry. The sun really works. Our machines are getting clogged too, Far too many choices. It gets confusing. How about bringing back the wringer washer I loved it as a kid, helping my mum who used just one detergent. Can't you just separate colours from whites? Also wash delicates by themselves. I just use Resolve and spray socks, underwear and if I find a stain on clothing, give it a good shot. If I have a bad stain on clothing before laundry day, I use shampoo, the clarifying type and rub it in and let it soak until laundry day. I wash everything in cold. We seem to have clean clothing after laundry day and not a lot of hard work to get there.

This is also good for the dishwasher. Cheap and does the job. Make sure you put it in at the 2nd wash though as the first wash cleans the dishes and then the vinegar cleans after that. I hope that makes sense. We used to wash in hot water but due to costs we can no longer do this and we use cold water washes and this spreads germs as well.

Clothes aren't germy once they are washed and if you put them on the line the UV rays kills all germs. Vinegar is a good idea though.

A study was done on some clothes and there was still germs on some after a cold wash. Depends on how dirty they are I spose.
