How do stores get us to buy more?
Natalia J 52132124-Jan-24
Checkout aisle and impulse Items designed to give you another opportunity to purchase. While you are waiting in line, you look over and see some candy or gum. There are also magazines and other items at the checkout. This is a prime spot for stores to sell impulse items. What are your thoughts? How do stores get us to buy more?

You also have to check the "special deal" prices carefully. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a single pack / item than it is to by the "special two pack / item deal". Similarly it can sometimes be cheaper to buy two smaller packs, than the one bigger pack.

The question should be, ‘ How do stores get us to pay more’ And the answer they found is, put less in the box or bottle/can, but still charge the same price…

Doesn't work with me at all. I go in with a list, and I stick to it. There is nothing in a store that can make me buy on impulse. I have all I need. I've been budgeting since high school, and I'm very thrifty, and happy with the necessary things of life. Less is More! ;-D

I think it is cute that in the veggie section they do have a help the kid's fruit and veg baskets. Maybe to get kids to eat some thing healthy while the adults do the shopping. The shops always smell of freshly baked doughnuts. yummy and too irresistible and they are my down fall.

Having been a grocery buyer n New Zealand here's some things they do. Loss leaders, I would pay $1.19 for a 1.5 litre coke and sell for 99 cents but the display is placed by lollies, chocolate biscuits and chippes that the brain tells people to grab with the coke. Profit is made on all the extra more profitable items. Buy multiples to save, not always the thing to do eg: as buying 5 for $4 can be more expensive that buying 4 single items at 78 cents Location location location, the placement of goods is determined by science. Grocery chains pay big money for data on what humans prefer and will do. Just like the layout of the store is designed to herd the naive to what they want you to buy. Even the shelves are analyzed to see what you see first, second etc. Always double check the sale price to the normal price usually underneath as you may be surprised. Did you know companies like nestle, coke etc are charged money to have their goods on sale. They are also pressured into a cheap price so the supermarket can lower the price but make a bigger profit. Use your brain or they will manipulate you and bend you to their will.

This means you have to go looking for what you want down aisles you wouldn't normally go down. I always have a list of what I need, so I only buy that which I know I need and not anything else extra.
                                                                  ·

They then place things kids crave at the end of isles and checkouts to harase their parents to get them whatever and buy things that the person never wanted. The music they play has been carefully chosen to make you part with more money as well so everything in the store is designed to make you want to impulse buy.
                                                                    ·

There are many tricks of the trade when it comes to merchandising. Stores take this very seriously, as they should, and they do research on that. Another thing that I've noticed is that Walmart often moves all the aisles around so you can't find what you're looking for. I spoke to a man in the store about that, and he told me that he couldn't find anything either! The point to this is that you will go down aisles that you wouldn't normally go down and pick up items you never saw before or make an impulse purchase. When I don't go to Walmart, I find I have saved so much money. At the same time, I have everything I need. I buy most of my groceries at the local store which is more expensive, but I buy what is on sale and only buy what I need! In the long run, buying at the local market saves me money.

Over recent years the Manucturers, not the stores, in order to maintain a particular Price Point, reduce the size, weight in their products. Remember wheh Wine and Spirits came in 750mls bottles? Now it is 700mls for the same price. Biscuits have been reduced in size but, until recntly when the Manufacturers Increased the Price of their products to the stores way out of proportion to the Cost Of Living Indices, the weight, but not the number of biscuits has beeb reduced. Something I find interesting is that all the Supermarkets have increased all of their prices, in Australia, by on average 21.7%, only to then put the same items out on "Special" at Half Price.

Coke and Pepsi, other drinks, chocolate ,and other items. I always looks for markdowns on use by dates. Long weekends on public holidays is good. I try to get non perishables on special as they don’t go off. I have found it best not to take small kid’s shopping as my grandson knows where the toys are and checkouts are a major problem with lollies etc at them.

When on line shopping first started, my sister-in-law started using it because she said it saved her money. I challenged that by saying that you don't get any reduced items, etc. Her retort was that she stuck to her list and only bought what she needed so, in the end, it saved her money. I could see her arguement.

If you use complimentary wifi, you are tracked and sent details of offers for products and stores. If you want to avoid impulse purchases, having a predetermined list and sticking to it can help.

This is why we call grocery shopping "snatch and grab" as we whiz through the supermarket and only go to the aisled/sections where we want or need something.

(Ignoring your list and needs). -Colours up front to lure you inside. Best items needed are usually against the walls, deeper inside. Anything that furthers deception. -Offer comparative shopping prices to make you think this is best for you. -Eye level catches like sweets kept lower at child levels. -Stores like Ikea will make you walk a mile through just to buy a few things while winding through and fetching unlisted items. -Strain the lineups (fewer cashiers/checkout spots), so if you linger for longer, you might grab something else. -Coupons galore, so you can max out confidently. If the shopper isn't very financially prudent to shop based on need with a strict list, time/money management, kid-free, not hungry etc, then ...
