Discussion of the Day
Aluminium Cookware?....is this really bad or really good?
APB02-Aug-22
OK...scientists worked out that aluminium from cooking pots and pans could leach out into what was cooking and that we could be eating aluminium...YUCK...get rid of all your aluminium cookware...it's poisoning you...THEN...scientists said that aluminium is not only totally harmless....but also passes straight through your body too...since then we have another minor scare about aluminium...banned in industrial kitchens without explanation....and NOW most of the non-stick frying pans available are yet again aluminium....what's going on?... I'm not buying or throwing away any more cookware!!

It depends on the thickness of the cookware.

Better avoided altogether. Stainless steel and cast iron are generally better

we never had them , It was a USA idea introduced and like all other USA ideas we ignored them to our benefit. There are so many toxins killing everything slowly whats the point of worrying. This is the least of anyones problem, want something to really be aware of fo to WEF and UN website and really read what is planned for the human race.... Bets all the USA so call made up science fiction

Cooking in aluminium is nearly as bad as cooking in lead would be and has much the same effect. Don't do it.

Nearly everything we use seems to be bad for us, and next thing you know researchers say the exact opposite. If we listened to everything they said we'd be nervous wrecks. I mostly use stainless steel, although I do have one aluminium saucepan that I boil eggs in.

nothing wrong with aluminium pots and pans. I have a trick that works for ua all the time make our aluminium pots and pans last long. Every 3 months you take one pot fill it wit mud and water, stir it like a stew, leave it outside on the table foe 2 days, then dump the contents and wash it clean with hot water, that's your pot refresh and last long. we are made of dirt

The nonstick ones at least have a coating which if not broken prevents what is being cooked coming into contact with the metal of the pan. So no problems there. As for Aluminum passing straight through the body I'm not so sure on that one as studies have shown that high Aluminum in the body may contribute to Alzheimer's Disease so that may be why that type of cook ware has been removed from commercial kitchens I don't know but it's at least a possibility. Unlike what the media wants to report Science is not hard and fast as new knowledge becomes available Theses change like for instance Uncle Albert said Light always travels at the speed of light and gave a specific speed which he claimed could not be exceeded. Now we know that it can travel slower depending on what it is going through but as yet no faster which may change at some time in the future or may not. I would also look at who is producing the studies saying something is safe if they are run or paid for by the Aluminum Industry they could be biased on flawered Science where they have chosen experiments that will give them the results those paying for the study. Sir Issacs Newton said the main problem with Science was not devising experiments to come to the right conclusion but knowing which experiments brought you to the wrong conclusion. I remember a cancer study that went out the window because the plastics they where using to transfer samples actually produced a cariogenic which caused cancers in every sample, they even had it growing in a tube that had been left over the weekend partly filled. Aluminum has several advantages lightness being the most obvious but it is a relatively new material and often mixed with other metals to make alloys which is where they may be real problems. For instance if they mixed it with Lead you would expect Lead Poisonings to be a common issue from things cooked in that pan. Other metals would give different possible problems or may be perfectly fine if they where Noble Metals that did not react with things. All I can say here is that that Old Cast Iron Fry Pan we used while on the sheep station mustering while heavy goes rusty when not used still cooks things as well as it did back in the 60's and builds up your arm muscles into the bargain. While it may be killing me slowly most of the modern highly processed foods also are as well so the real question is do you want to die from being positioned by the implements you use to cook things with or the things you are cooking?

Yes it is bad for your health but it has superior cooking qualities. Cast iron is the safest of all the metals if you're not prone to overdosing on Iron so it's great for women of reproductive age and growing children (due to needing extra iron) but not so great for men. The most inert material you can cook with is soda lime glass or borosilicate glass. Stay away from leaded glasses which leach lead.

Also stay away from items labeled "NON-STICK" as most of em are coated in "FOREVER CHEMICALS" which are far worse than aluminium. Better to season a pan yourself.

At the end of the day, most foods we ingest probably have nasties in them i.e through farming, processing and the chemically contaminated world that we live in.

I’ve nursed for 50 years and never saw people with such related issues. Glass is probably better.

With every medical opinion on what is the right and wrong thing for your health, in 10 years' time the opinion will be the opposite, only to revert back in another 10 years time to what was advised in the first place and then a new opinion which may or may not be final in another 10 years' time. I think the old advice of "everything in moderation" is always the best view for anything when it is your health and following this logic, this includes using aluminium cookware in moderation.

Mum & I bought stainless steel. Modern aluminium cookware is anodised, so the aluminium can't leach into the food. I'm still sticking with my stainless steel. Better safe than senile, lol!

I do not cook anymore (except ONLY on my birthday). You can eat healthy without cooking. I definitely eat healthy!

I enjoy cooking though so would be difficult not to :) So you just eat fruits and veggies mostly I'm guessing. Also good that it is supervised by a dietician :)
