Hit By Space Junk!
APB06-Mar-24
Humans have been dumping thousands of tons of space junk in orbit around the Earth since the 1960s....nobody cared much until it started getting busy up there...hitting the hundreds of nice new shiny satellites or spaceships in orbit...the answer seems to be to use private companies to send up satellites and push all the garbage back at the Earth...so it all burns up on re-entry...aside from the extra damage this pollution this will do in our atmosphere...what happens if several DON'T burn up?...possibly radioactive molten metal raining down on us....nice!

    • The people who control this kind of stuff are a bunch of selfish slobs. Put it 'out there' and it's no longer their problem, let the future generations deal with it..... how ignorant!!
      ·
      • Several runaway satellites have crashed in Australia over the years, all out in the bush away from civilization, so far.

        • We are hurting ourselves and the future generations

          • What goes up, must come down. Hopefully we won;'t get too hurt when it does.

            • The countries that put that rubbish up there should be made to clean it up! It is disgusting how they leave trash all over the planet & in space and just don't care.
              ·
              • sadly, we are polluting. the outer space, and now we find they are leaving things on the moon.

                • I have always been concerned about space junk falling to earth, but no-one else seems to care one iota.
                  ·
                  • It's getting crowded up there. There are over 8,000 satellites hanging out and an average of 8 a day being launched.
                    ·
                    • And another 37,000 satellites to be launched by Elon Musk for his Starlink Constellation
                      ·
                  • Most of what is up there are flecks of paint and bolts and nuts all very small under 2 cm in size. The things to worry about are the intact satellites and Space Station if they get struck they will explode into so many pieces of junk that they will eventually remove all human made orbital objects and leave it impossible to use much modern technology so your GPS's will be as useful as tits on a bull and very little in the way of OS Communication will remain. On the up side eventually the molecules of metallic objects that have burnt up on reentry will eventually settle on the planet and leave a very fine layer across the entire planet and it will be small no one will actually notice. What they will notice is big lumps of Carbon Fibre that hit the ground but even then most will be lying there for months if not years before anyone notices them.
                    ·
                    • And that is why EOS’ tech that can shift the junk up there around is so important, ie it reduces the risk of a catastrophic junk event…

I do not deny this but at the moment it is untested and unproven technology so it very well may not work as they intend.

                  • We have had a few warnings. There seemed much excitement when one of China's earlier space objects managed to fall in West Australia. So far most have been far outside of large cities. Will we get serious when it comes crashing into some of our highly populated areas?

                    • I dread to think how much is up there, and the magnitude of it all. I don't think that the governments/ countries or scientists could even begin to explain the ramifications involved. I suppose we can't leave it up their. Bad enough we pollute the planet, let alone the space surrounding it. Guess there wasn't a contingently plan for the crap we let behind when they first thought of space travel.

                        • Somehow, I don't think there is too much to worry about radioactive poisoning. You're more likely just to see one of the larger things burn up on re-entry. Pato Lo Duck s correct. Get the google going and look up your question from where ever you are. As well as EOS, try NASA. They know all kinds of stuff.

                          • Also, there are not as many big bits up there as people might think, about 30,000 bigger than a baseball. Obviously you don’t want anything radioactive burning up in the atmosphere, but small ordinary bits will burn up in the upper atmosphere if they are nudged into a failed orbit.

                          • Not really sure about NASA anymore...everybody loved them in 1960s...but they have ceased to be an independent source of wonder...the magic has gone....they seemed to have climbed into bed with Boeing (great move) and everything is now outsourced...they have become a BRAND...sticking their name on things...like Nike....a bit sad really.... they can sell you a T-shirt now.... I'd have bought one in the 1960s....

                          • Im sorry to hear that about Boeing. They have merged with McDonald - Douglas, the armed forces contractor. The emphasis at Boeing now seems to be stock buy backs and the abandonment of quality. Boeing seems to be going down faster than a 700max.

                          • pushing space junk around might be fun but it doesn't get rid of it
                            ·
                          • No, but first you have to find it to deal with it. There are 32 nuclear reactors orbiting the Earth containing around 1 ton of nuclear fuel, 31 launched by the Russians and 1 by the US. The thing is, EOS can not only find them but also push them around, potentially into far Earth orbits where they will stay for thousands of years until a time that we can deal with them more safely.

                          • We polluted the earth. Now we are polluting space. Man will find a way to ruin everything given the chance! I wish we could go back about 60 years and start over without all the technology making a mess of things. We were better off with less. We managed with four TV channels and getting up to change them. There wasn't much need with less choices. I could even wind my car windows up and down and pay less for a car. There are so many bells and whistles on everything that it's all out of my pay range. How do other people buy new vehicles? The only good paying job seems to be selling drugs to young kids! What a mess we've made! Simple lives; being poor wasn't any more stressful than now, and we had a good life and used simple things to create fun and spend family time together. We didn't all go and do our own thing. You can tell I'm old and tired of this mess and ready to go to a much more beautiful place with peace and love!

Space junk, meteorites, etc. are falling from orbit all the time and nobody notices it - "shooting stars" are about the only thing you'd see. Very rarely does anything make it back to the Earth's surface, and that is usually done on purpose with bigger things aimed to land in a remote area of the sea. Although, there was once some space junk that scattered small pieces across part of Australia, so the state government sent NASA a joke police fine for littering.

The pollies are not doing anything about it. Tho I did read an article recently about the dangers of space junk and the concerns there are about it. Our atmosphere consists mainly with hard junk, waste products of man-made destructive materials. We are already reaping the (ill) benefits of such short-sighted acts of humans. Elnino effect, temperature rise, melting Antarctic ice, floods, storms and Bush fires are all part and parcel of these acts and it's very 🧣 scary!

If you can afford to go to space you can afford to clean up after yourself. What you take up, you bring back. How to clean it up? No idea, but Wall-E comes to mind. We have 'no littering' fines on earth, so fine them. The clean up bill will be in the mail. It was inevitable we would spread our destruction further.
