Cooking at Home
Rahima 145890112-May-24
Since Covid-19, I developed a passion for cooking. I found it is a smart way to save money. On top of that, enjoying delicious meals, exploration of flavours of nourishing oneself and others making it a genuine and rewarding passion for many of us. Is cooking your passion?

For my family and I we think of cooking as a passion. We take pride in our food and at times it can get competitive. We express our relationship with each other through the foods we make and we definitely cook from our hearts. So when asking is cooking a passion to me, I say of course it is.

I have been cooking since I was very young. However, since Covid I have been cooking all 3 meals. Homemade meals healthier and my family enjoys them.

Just got a bit of a second wind after watching Jamie Oliver's cooking show where everything is cooked in an airfryer. There is so much more to an airfryer than I realised. He layered up different vegetables with a moist chicken breast on top (a feat in itself). I have always found the breast very dry, but Jamie has all the tricks. He scored it with three slits across the top and filled it with a lovely paste that he whipped up in a flash. Pesto from a jar should do the trick for me.

My father was a chef, so I learnt to cook at a very young age. I have been cooking for over 50 years now and enjoy it immensely.

I HATE cooking! To minimise this chore, when I cook I make a huge batch & freeze individual portions.

Cooking is definitely just a chore - I cook because I have to eat but it is not something I love in any way.

It's not a passion but I'd rather have a meal made with love at home than an overpriced plate with a tiny amount of food that someone's made to try and impress me

Not my passion but I do enjoy it. I like using basic foods and making amazing meals out of them. I'm sure I add less salt than restaurants or off a shelf where they use salt and a number of substances to give a longer shelf or freezer life. Who knows what they are and where these preservatives come from and what are they doing to us???

Not since I compound fractured my leg and my foot was hanging by skin and had to be stitched back on. Miracle I didn't have it amputated. Thank you, God. Looooong recovery. Still not back to my norm, cooking is hard from a wheelchair. But cooking and especially baking are a very rewarding activity, as Rahima says.

Thanks. This accidental fall has rocked my world. That's all I'll say, but your well wishes are so appreciated, as I'm lonely as heck right now. And adjusting to a visible to others injury. I care how I look, so it's hard. I don't need other's attention....I want to have healthy self-esteem. Again, thank you very much.

I cook only because I have to. When my children were young I cooked cakes, biscuits and pies but it was all eaten in a flash and I was left with a pile of dishes etc. to wash. Hardly fulfilling work. I will make a cake for family gatherings now and then and I use the slow cooker but otherwise the kitchen and I are only passing acquaintances.

Now, mostly being alone I don’t really enjoy cooking but I love home made meals, research new, healthy, vegetarian recipes. It tastes so different to ready made food! I wouldn’t call it a passion though.

Spices and herbs are very important part of cooking but there are some things I can't eat any more like curries, butter chicken they upset my tummy sadly. Plus there is also the money side of cooking at home and not buying take away because it's so expensive these days. Enjoy your cooking and Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, accepted, but I have better things to do with time. I cook one pan meals, simple healthy and takes around 15 min max. Would never go back to cooking. But if you feel good go for it.

Have alook at the Ingredients Panel on most Foods today. Long lists of Numbers which are, unless you have a booklet telling you what all those numbers mean, to the vast majority meaningless and even if you do have that little booklet the actual names are every bit as meaningless. Today there are, quite literally many 100s of them and the vast majority are Laboratory Manufactured from chemicals and, in some case By-products of Petroleum. Trans Fats are known to be Carcingenic, they provide No Nutrition whatsoever. Why do manufactures add it to their products, particularly Margarines? It makes them smoother, more spreadable. Do they, like Heavy Metals such as Copper Chlorophyl etc. which have long-since been Proven to be Carcinogenic, accumulate in your body and then when you have stored up enough of them make you very, very Ill? Cooking regularly is a bit like going to the Gym. Once you get into the habit it becomes part of your Life and may mean you will live longer and avoid all those Artificial Chemicals manufacturers use to make the food they make actually taste of something.

Only two of us so not much point in baking as we then eat too much of it LOL Even tho biscuits have gone up in price so have ingredients to make them. Did give it a burst few months ago but not economically viable now.

I buy whatever vegetables are on clearance and I make meals with these and pulses as they're cheap. What I really enjoy is getting the "Red Book" out which I transcribed old family recipes from, which had paper that was falling apart, when I was 10 years old. As it's been almost 50 years since I wrote those recipes down and since the writing is fading away, it is almost time to rewrite the family recipes again and hopefully my children and grandchildren will decide to try them out when I'm gone. There are even recipes which refer to "remove plate from fire" which pre date even my own grandmother. The recipes are easy to make, relatively cheap and taste delicious. I like knowing exactly what is in my food and cooking at home from scratch provides me with something to look forward to eating! Thanks for reading and Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there!

I like the structure it puts into my day, particularly now that we are empty nesters and retired. Also the health benefits make it a necessity ie controlling salt and fat content. I have a friend whose husband does all the cooking. They have a system whereby they start with letter A continuing through the alphabet cooking traditional meals from countries beginning with each letter of the alphabet. He does the research and cooking and she does the shopping. I am a bit envious.

We even grow and dry our own chillies and herbs. Much nicer than store bought. I would like to make my own bread though, just to try. My neighbour makes her own jams and condiments, others catch fish, grow fruit and vege so we share it round.

( pretty cheap for a piece) you can freeze it too. Youtube foccacia bread recipes ,, they are probably the easiest to start with , it's flatter and baked on a deep tray. If it turns out a bit rustic looking ,well it will still be a score! 🙂

As soon as I hit my 40's I discovered I don't cook at home often at all. Not so much due to laziness, but more I'm also a shift worker. But I acknowledge I do need to make a better effort, as when you cook for yourself. You always avoid all the preservatives that are likely put into frozen pre-made meals by companies.

There is no one to cook for except myself, and it is very difficult to cook most things for one person. I've never had any confidence in my cooking because of criticism I've had in the past. I do think I'm a good good, just inexperienced. I spoke yesterday with a good friend who works at Taco Bell. She told me that every day, there's a woman that buys $50 worth of food! This woman works at Walmart! How do people afford to eat out and why? Their family should be eating healthier food. Are they lazy or do they think they are being good to their kids? I would be so tired of it. Every restaurant is always busy in this area! Growing up, eating out was only for my birthday or Mother's Day!

Today there are meals that I made then that my children and grandchildren still ask me to make for them.

I improvise a lot and tend not to follow recipes too closely. Better cook than baker where improvisation can get you into trouble. I have found that I am able to recreate things, if I have tasted them once. Save a ton of money by not eating out and have a better quality experience too. Not against eating out but I want something exceptional when I go out instead of something meh. Unfortunately, the dining out experience is usually more meh than wonderful.

I learned to cook and bake for the family because we ate home cooked meals from day one. Creativity kicked in when something had to be made spur of the moment from food items that were still in the fridge and/ or cupboards.

I never lost my love of cooking and baking and at soon to be age 75 yrs young I am still going strong. The one time I did not admit I could both cook and bake was in service. I love to cook for a few or even a banquet but not for 3-4K people thrice a day and work from sunrise to long past Midnight. Happy Mother's Day folks. You never appreciate her until she is gone. I lost my Mama 14 years ago next month and I really miss her now.
