Discussion of the Day
Deer Hunting in Season
Debra D 62478008-Dec-24
Yesterday, there were 4 deer here, would have been so easy to get, however, an elder friend of ours came today, don't see any deer anywhere today. The four yesterday were not afraid at all, they ate here all day, but today the guy is here, and we have not seen a deer all day. Are the deer intelligent or what?

They can probably read us better than we can them .Their natural instincts have not been bred outor taken over by technology

There was quite a splurge of deer raising in N.S.W. south coast areas a few years ago. They were too successful in their breeding and of course deer could jump over quite high fences. I gather the farmers got sick of being told that there deer were escaping and it all got too much and that farming lark died out. However, due to all the escapees there is now quite a large number of various breeds of deer throughout N.S.W. and country Victoria. I admit I've eaten venison and liked it but hate the idea of them being killed for FUN!!

We have deer by me all the time. I guess it's their safe space because they never leave. Which is.fine with me because they are amazing to watch. All 6 stick so close together just like children.

What's wrong with a camera, you've got the memory for life and so has the deer.

In the kingdom age the wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy. All animals and people will live in peace. See Isaiah 65.

I'm not a fan of hunting unless it's necessary for food, but one of my sons enjoys hunting with his father-in-law and they eat all the meat my 4-year-old granddaughter says it's her favorite food. I really can't say anything about it to them.

Okay... Thus discussion isn't really a 'discussion' is it. It's stating whether you are foe it or against. Personally, I can't and couldn't unless it was a means of survival to provide for my family. I eat meat upto three times a week but I think I'd I had to do the deed, I probably couldn't do the whole process my self. I suppose that's the thing about civilized society you can go to a store and purchase foods with little thought of what goes into what we consume. I think if times were different not many would actually consume what they do because the strength, stamina and know how doesn't really exist.

Deer come into the city all of the time where I live. I can watch sets of twins grow to adults. They are more hungry than afraid. After trying for 8 years to grow something they won't eat, I finally gave up because they eat everything now. I love them, but I'd love to be able to grow something of my own! The deer you saw didn't return because they found another place to eat. They'll be back. ;-D

I dont like guns, period. I don't agree with hunting for fun or trophy. Or families that encourage there children to be involved. I eat meat, sometimes, even go fishing. I understanding that people hunt to eat, but who can eat 4 deer.

I would never hunt for trophy, only in season and only one for meat and it is never wasted. They multiply fast and get over populated and then would get sick if not for the one season they put in a year. We had one here this year that had 3 babies at the same time.

I can only respond via a poem I write quite a few years ago .. am writing this from memory as can't locate the original at the moment, so hope have remembered it well: In the peaceful valley the silence is broken A gunshot resounds like an angry word spoken A once graceful creatures lies fallen and bleeding And the hunter stands over it, his gloating face gleaming The rest of the flock have scattered and spread Far from this place that they so love but now dread Where is it safe, oh where can they go Hurrying and scampering their you in tow The hunter takes out his hunting knife and his trophy does claim He ignores the cries of anguish, the creature's cries of pain It echoes through the valley as a warning to all Like a cry to battle from a bugle call But there's nothing they can do, their hearts feel like lead When it is safe they'll return to mourn for their dead. That's it .,, comment it you wish ... xoxo mb

Very heartfelt and well written. It reminds me of the movie titled 'Powder', when he transfers the pain the deer that was shot is feeling to the kid who shot it. ;-(

Unfortunately, it is. 😟 Some species can be hunted all year round while other species have specific dates. For example, in the state of Victoria: https://www.gma.vic.gov.au/hunting/deer/when-to-hunt

Probably all got hit with a cannon at 1 minute past midnight hence they are all gone. Personally I detest dear killing but if this helps I;m all for Exterminating all Past, Present and Future Politicians and replacing them a an AI that may run on a Z80 on a very good day. The advantage is no money in brown paper bags under the desk so the Pollie can vote for something that returns the Lobbyist 100,000 times the bribe and more importantly besides the massive waste of Tax Payer Funds no one would notice any difference they would all think it was Business a Usual except for those who corrupt Political Parties and Politicians who by the very work that htye do means they should all be in jail for corrupting the Pollies.

There is multiple cars lost every year from deer hits. People have died from deer and car collisions. It is sad for everyone. I only harvest one deer a year for food and none is wasted. This year I shared half of that deer.

Wow what an eye opener that movie was. Just shows how horrible humans really are. Check it out, it is worth watching and it has a happy ending.

It put food on our table and We believe in eating meat because It shows in the bible God sent seven pair of clean edible animals to the ark for food to eat by humans and he sent two pair of unclean not edible animals to the ark. He did not get a license this year. We plan to get goats for eating brush and fire control and we will make wethers out most the bucks for food later. During hunting season though every year we have several deer come hide out at our place in the meadows as only my son hunts our property and not anywhere in the meadows by the house. He only gets one buck a year and it does help our table through winter.

Unfortunately Aussie kangaroos aren't as intelligent and they get shot, run over, aborted and even starved to death because the mother was run hit by a car and died so the joey gets out of the pouch and slowly starves to death. It's very sad to see and there is one development road in QLD I will never travel on again. Deer are a pest here. I haven't seen any where we live now, they are mainly in NSW although I can't see why they aren't here. Seen kangaroos and there is a creek called emu creek and I have never seen an emu here either.

Animals in season for food should be humanely killed with no suffering. No one should take more than one for food in my world. Nothing should be wasted of the one you take. The law here allows 3 per person, there is lots of them. One is my limit and I shared half of it. I do not trophy hunt and I am fine without it being a buck too. We have anterless season in at the same time as buck season. Then there is a few days off here and there in season for the deer to rest and regroup. Different counties has different rules.

They were released by people who went into deer farming thinking it was the next big thing and because of the tax breaks offered by our silly tax system. When it all went bust they just released them and now they are up and down the east coast of Australia....mainly NSW and Victoria.

Also in the Royal National Park South of Cronulla. They tell me Venison is very good, low in calories and cholesterol.

It is good, but I don't eat red meat much anymore. Mostly turkey and chicken. Rabbit is also good. So many meats we could be raising to eat instead of beef! ;-D

The Supermarkets are over-flowing with perfectly good food yet they still want to go out a shoot everything that moves and the call it "Fun"! To some extent we can understand why the Americans do it as they simply adore running around with military-style Assault Rifles and other guns capable of firing off hundreds of rounds per second, going to Schools, Shopping Centers, churches, synagogues, mosques & temples and then killing dozens of innocent people for no good reason. Do they get a sexual buzz out of it? We were offered a Free trip to the USA. We refused because we don't want to run the risk of being sent home in a body-bag.

Should there 'still' be a deer hunting season...NO. Unfortunately, human beings have not evolved from our hunter-gather past as deer hunting season is unnecessary and inhuman at this point in humans' fight for survival on this planet. However, I have a bias viewpoint. I am 95% to 99% of the time (when it comes to food) - a VEGAN!

That is the truth of the matter. Now, the higher ups have introduced elk in the area, not sure how that will be, but not looking forward to an elk being in the middle of the highway, the don't move.

Yesterday it was 30F and the winds were at gale force which made it feel like minus 12 below 0 F. I am probably one of the few guys who got a deer with an M60 machine gun! Not by choice since I love animals and fight for their rights. Many years back I was in the US ARmy Reserves PA National Guards and at summer camp in Fort Drum NY just across the Canadian/US border near Toronto, I was on the firing range using my M60 and blasting targets into atoms when a blasted 5 point buck deer wandered out of the woods behind the firing line and was mesmerized by the flashes (Every 5th shell in an M60 is coated w/ a reflective material that makes it glow when fired) from my gun and although my asst gunner did break the ammo belt the barrel was so hot it kept firing in a 'cook off' until the belt had been emptied. The poor deer was cooked by our company cooks but I just could not eat it. Besides, I did try venison once and hated the taste- too sweet. The other guys though were grateful for real food instead of what they usually served us. BTW, I learned cooking and baking when I was 3 BION but I made damned sure that the service never found that out! I was trained to be a clerk typist but I wound up as arms room NCO leaving service after 8 yrs (1970-1978) as a staff sergeant (E6)- the same rank as Kinchloe on Hogan's Heroes played to the hilt by Ivan Dixon! Oh and BTW deer have a 6th sense when danger is around and never ever get between a doe and her fawn(s)! In PA so rare are does that doe hunting is allowed only once a year- on Xmas Eve BION!

It is cruel to kill animals, but done the right way as a sacrifice should be allowed. Otherwise it's just plain cruelty especially if done for just killing to watch them die and leave them there. Like some of the fishing shows on T.V where they catch the fish but then throw them back. Like whats the point.

They literally smell danger. And fear. And your weapon. They feel love for their mate and babies. Feel pain in slaughter. Sadness and grief when one of their own, whether animal or human, dies or is no longer there. They feel joy when their person returns from a trip or school or a tour in war torn countries. They swim up to boats so a human can cut them free from abandoned fishing lines and then turn back to say thank you when they're set free . Animals aren't stupid and therefore I don't eat any of them. They certainly don't deserve what so many humans do to them.
