Discussion of the Day
Work-related burnout
Andrzej J10-Apr-22
Most people don't love or enjoy their job, and even more people are overworked, exhausted, feel like they have no control over their life because of work. There's a huge difference between an empty fatigue and a gratifying exhaustion. Yet even if it is the latter, we ought to watch ourselves, we are of no use to anyone, if we compromise our career/occupation & health longevity. Have you ever suffered from a burnout?
Comments
  • I'm always burned out, not because I work a lot of hours but because I get out of bed at 1:30am 5 days a week
    ·
    • I am a stay at home mom which in itself can be super stressful and tiring.
      ·
      • We're more a slave to our lifestyle than our jobs. But yes it is really important that people take care of their mental health properly. Ultimately I think happiness is a frame of mind and it doesn't matter what you do as a job sometimes because sometimes you will be happy, sad, bored of the same thing everyday or grateful to have a job as well as other things. I've had burnout a few times because I tend to push myself way too much. It's easy to do and the road to recovery can be very long. Totally not worth it and you're better off being patient with achieving goals. Gratitude goes a long way, and reframing things to find the positive in situations can be very empowering.

        • Been working for 60 years, never burnt out and never will, love my job
          ·
          • No I have never suffered burnout because although I loved my job my family were my first priority. I refused to work full time and only worked 29 hours because my husband travelled for work and could be away from home for months and I felt it was important that my children had at least one full time parent.

            • No I loved my work & the challenges,I did space my work. I was aware if I didn't, work & my family would suffer
              ·
              • Not with work. As a Carer yes- but you have to keep going.
                ·
                • Yes, I agree with @Wayne a c. It's horrible, but today it is recoverable with the right attitude and will power.

                  • No. Husband and I used to run a newsagency together for 20 years and after that I learned how to use a computer and started doing temporary work and ended up in a government job - been there for 15 years now and am happy with the work I do - there is always more work than time allows but we are only expected to do what we can. Thinking of retiring in the next 12 months (am 74 this year so obviously am the oldest one there). Been working from home since the onset of covid and that has been great.
                    ·
                    • Good on you .I was 71 when I reluctantly retired But have a great time now ,more contact with friends & family & hobbies
                      ·
                  • After completing 3 roles on a daily basis because there was NO FUNDING to replace staff I had had enough of working unpaid overtime I retired from my local Public Hospital, don’t miss it.
                    ·
                    • wow, that would be Stress City, I bet. I knew someone who worked the switchboard at the local PH. That job changes people, for most, not in a good way!
                      ·
                  • Working for large supermarket chain is exhausting, and management do not care about staff. Their only concerns are profit, and the more you do for them the more they expect
                    ·
                    • I think that must be wrong with me. I always tired.
                      ·

                    • working 12 hr shifts at an airport is exhausting most of us were burnt out
                      ·
                      • I worked for the public services for 13yrs I was young back then but I got sick a few times at work and had to take few days off from work. I don't know if it was the high pressure and the long hours or coming to work some times 7days a week but my doctor keep telling me it was stress from work. Once I left the public services and worked for a insurance company it became worse with the high pressure then I got pregnant had my son and the insurance ask me to come back when he was less than 5mths old this was 1996 so I did come back after 5mths working with insurance with a young baby I was diagnose with M.S. and I thought this is not worth your health so I left and have never look back .

                          • you can blame the work provider NGO or Departmental and people who run it, for putting workers in that situation, pressure on each individual to perform
                            ·
                            • No job or amount of money is worth having no life we must work to enjoy living not work ourselves too death
                              ·
                              • I’m there

                                • I found working for the NSW Public Service very trying. I had worked for various building and engineering companies prior to that. Government procedures are totally stultifying, everything is rules, most of which haven't changed in the past 20 or so years. Sure it's reliable but so horribly boring so unless you are in one of the upper grades your work is highly repetitive and leads to feeling totally unrelated to reality. I hung in 13 years until age 69 because I needed the job to help my partner pay off our mortgage. It took me a year after to recover my energy and even my sense of belonging in society once more.

                                  • I definitely suffered from burn out in the last few years leading up to 2020. I didn't realise how close to the edge I can come until after I got out of that job in Sept 2020. The relief was immense. I was on the point of mental collapse. Covid was not the cause, but the extra pressure it bought to bare on us ('essential service") did not help. I remember the weekend before I resigned being on the phone with a dear friend just bawling my eyes out. She has worked at the same place I did but was kind of pushed out a few years before ( and it was not her competence which was an issue, she just didn't take any bullshit from management and they did not like it and used an injury she had as an excuse to make things hard for her). She asked me what I would say to a friend if they were describing exactly what I had just told her and I knew the time had come. The job was just not worth it. The best thing I ever did was get out. I did not have a job to go to ( which was scary), but had 3 months worth of long service leave owning, plus I had about 3 weeks annual leave as well and a nice fat tax check, so I wasn't under any immediate pressure. I had planned to take a trip, but Covid put paid to that, never did get away. In any case getting out of that job was the best decision and one I probably should have done much sooner, but I was too afraid of losing that regular paycheck. I will never again let myself gone down that dark hole again. No job is worth my mental health.

                                    • I suffered terrible Rheumatoid arthritis and the only cure they had at the time was an injection in my joints and I did not want to start that so I lived with the pain. I can still get bad pain in my elbows and shoulders. I have to watch how I get our old dog off the bed as I can pull a muscle in my back. I am just grateful I don't have to work and we can live on the merger earns we do get. Life is just simple and we enjoy the country life style we have.

This also applies to ALL health workers, nurse’s,ambo people. No one seems to be listening and sadly they had to take strike action.

                                                • To be fair, I think work place requirements are more stringent about the welfare of the employees. There are penalties if you dont follow the rules as required as a manager. Its better than it was in the past.

                                                  • Hi have had burnout a couple of times. this is from working to long hours in a highly stressful job . the trouble is you don't no you are burning out until it is to late and you crash out. then the doctor sears you have to take time off work. the Boss seas he needs back at work as soon as you can so after a week you go back and you have not recovered so you take pills or drugs to help relive the stress. this last about 6 months before you crash again this time you end up in hospital for week or two by this time the boss dose not you back more stress. you go home to recover and try to find a new job. ( tip) new job work only Monday to Friday 40 hours a week don't answer the work phone out side work hours and have fun on weekends .

                                                    • I have - through nobody else's fault but my own. I think that proper self-care and time management, division of time into work/play/rest, should be taught as a subject in schools. I think also it needs to be addressed more in workplaces, and by therapists, as I think there will be an epidemic of it over the next 20-50 years. Also, it should be noted you can still love your job and suffer from burnout.

                                                              • You can get burnout even if you are unemployed. We live in times where we are losing the ability to be truly happy, satisfied and loving life. I first read of stress back in the early 80's. We are all overwhelmed and being driven by forces we cannot overcome without a huge fight which is exhausting in itself. Now that some people are being forced to work from home, there is no clear divide between home and work. I don't know where this is going to end, we can't go back to a simpler time, I wish I knew the answer.
                                                                ·

I was expected to keep handling it. One morning I woke up ill with water in my lungs. I was ill in bed for three months. I couldn't breathe properly. My doctor said that he surprised I didn't die. I believe my body caved in to stress and couldn't cope. I gave up my job as it wasn't worth it anymore. I learn't a valuable lesson from the incident. I liked the job, but I was overworked and exhausted. Be very careful how much your boss wants to keep pushing more workload onto you. Don't leave it until it is to late, like I did. I suffered badly. I will never ever do that again. A valuable lesson for me. I'm a lot wiser for it now. I hope nobody goes through, what I went threw.
                                                                                ·

Just used to tell myself that office work is not "rocket science" and manage not to stress ot "paperwork" even though it was work overload some days, just did a lot of deep breathing and that seemed to help .. leave the work stuff problems at work and start afresh next day.

I hated my job it was what started off my anxiety again. I felt like everyone was picking on me because of my accent. I ended up loosing a lot of weight, depression and my whole world turned upside down. I had to ask the drs to give me time off. 6 weeks later I quit my job and have not walked into that shop since. Just thinking about it starts the anxiety again.

I still suffer anxiety and depression but I find simple things in life which make me smile like my dog Jackie who is now 12 years old. Often I think about many overseas who are struggling to even eat or are homeless and thing my self lucky. It helps to remind my self of others less fortunate.

The banks are adamant it will happen, and most probably this year. People might need to work harder and longer hours to afford the increase. Its always a bit of a risk changing jobs as you might like the new environment and job...but the pay might not be as good. And many won't be able to retire early. They will probably even put the average retirement up to 70 in the future.

It was tiring and by the end of each week I was exhausted, sometimes not only physically but mentally too. The new system was better. You would want to do it just for the money. Tax time I discovered it had put me into a higher tax bracket and I gained almost nothing financially. I also got over tired and developed muscle spasms in the last couple of weeks so painful that I had to go to the Dr.

Many people don't choose their job...its what is--- available where you live. Its all about paying the bills . There are the lucky ones who are in the right work or jobs. I don't agree that many suffer from burnout unless they have long hours and or health issues. There are some jobs that are taking a toll on people.. The emergency services... Hospital workers, ambulance, etc. The government should be doing more to prevent this as its also a risk for patients. I think if the employer realises a employee is in danger from burnout it will show up eventually. Many jobs don't have the 40 hour week as the norm anymore. Some have to work 2 or 3 jobs and I imagine that could be exhausting. Some jobs, I don't know how people do it!
