Discussion of the Day
Rural Shows
Joy L 6876709-Mar-24
Our local agricultural show is on this weekend. I like a lot of people are busy baking and cooking things. Also hoping our garden will give us the biggest, best, pumpkin, tomato. Or best Rose, herbs or other goodies.
Do others enter their local shows or is everyone getting too busy, and it is only us oldies that are doing it.
I am entering: Pumpkins, Tomatoes, Herbs, Silverbeet, Rhubarb, Murat Limes, Roses. Tea Cake, Scones, Date loaf, Nut loaf, uncooked slice, lemon butter, sweet chilli sauce, apple butter, jam and maybe some tomato sauce. Also, some photos.
I am not the biggest exhibitor.

  • Nice. It reminds me of the big agricultural show that I attended in the country with my in-laws. It was very nice! Very country atmosphere馃グ
    • Oh so nice! I've always lived in the city and never attended one of these shows. The closest thing to one I've been to is a farmer's market and it's so nice to see so many locally grown and made items.
      • never cared to do that
        • We have one every September for 2 weeks in Springfield, Massachusetts. I sometimes go just to see what is new. We also have some 3 days fairs around Labor Day.
          • Boy you are busy. No I think the times have changed. People used to do a lot of their bottling and cooking but now it is easier to buy it. War Widows, Mothers Union, Country Women Association etc. have all very few women in them now and mostly they are in advanced years. My Dad's Mother and his sisters were great cooks. My Mum was raised in an orphanage so could not boil an egg. I did a bit better but am not an enthusiastic cook by any stretch of the imagination. Years ago, the Royal Shows used to come to the Big City to show what the farmers did and to show their animals and such. Now though it is all about the rides, show bags and making money. The old time ways have gone I am afraid to say. Anyway, good luck with all your entries. I am sure you will do well.
            • I've never been to one, but I'd like to go.
              • I think these rural shows are important because not only do the exhibitors get to show off their prowess, but children and city folk get to learn about what farmers do and where their food comes from. I loved going to these shows growing up and I was raised on a dairy farm with lots of crops. Hard work but also SO fun!!
