Discussion of the Day
Guns and their Owners
04-Oct-21
'Guns don't kill people, people kill people', is what I have been hearing since almost forever. I live in America, where it is a Constitutional Right to own a gun. Yet, with the rise in ownership of assault weaponry and the rise of mass killings, some want to know if this is a good thing. While others blame it on evil people, who possibly would have killed anyway, gun or not. Your opinions on this is sought. Thank you.

    • Alot going on in America at the moment about guns. A very divided nation after that recent school killing. It seems it will never change and the world still wonders why America is still allowing the same shit.

      • In Australia there are some people who keep guns. But we very rarely if at all have mass shootings. The less people allowed to have guns then the less likelyhood of mass killings. The last one we had was in Tasmania and it was very sad. The owner of the gun was considered to have schizophrenia. Many died as a result and this could have been avoided.

      • farmers need guns to put down distressed stock, & to kill wild animals that harry their stock. Police need guns because the bad guys have them. Soldiers need guns because taking a knife to a gunfight isn't smart. The constitutional right to own a gun in the US of A harks back to the days when you needed them for self defence. If private citizens didn't have guns.......?

        • After the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, Australia had a gun amnesty, and the rules around gun ownership changed. As a consequence we no longer have massacres. To own a firearm you need a licence, and it needs to be secured in a gun safe. If you are not of good character, you don’t get a gun licence. If you don’t obey the rules you lose your gun licence and your guns have to go. No carrying your gun around in your glove box just in case someone pisses you off on the road, or in your handbag “ just in case”. Guns are weapons. They are designed to kill. They have no other purpose. To let any knob head done to Walmart and buy one is an absolute joke. Americans need to to stop thinking that carrying a gun is even remotely ok.

          • Yes - I must admit - DO NOT BLAME THE GUN!!!! It is the person using it that is the problem. I live in Australia and we don't have as many guns here - but still have lots of violence issues. Uncontrolled violent rages is the most common cause of serious behaviour. I think kids should be taught about controlling tempers at School................

            • No its avalibilitiy of them. So yes we should not allow them except to people who use them in jobs...or sport. So it's the guns!
              ·
          • To own a gun you should either be in a gun club,or the police force
            ·
            • I think having a license to own a guy is a good idea. A person how want to killed will find away. With or without a gun.

            • I think that Constitution was written in different times and has never been updated. Somehow I doubt that if it were being written in this day and age that it would still be the same. Sometimes the rights have to be updated with more appropriate laws as no-one has ever had the ability to see into the future and see what ramifications can occur.

              • sorry but I don't like guns, and I can't stand seeing kids playing with guns, especially water pistols, cause I always end up soaked,I could have knocked my husband stupid because he let our 16-year-old son get his rifle and his permit, so he could join the PCYC RIFLE CLUB

                • There is a saying in the bible that he who lives by the sword will die by the sword, but of course they didn't have guns in those days, but I think the same applies to guns, if you have a gun you'll de by a gun.

                  • Guns don't kill people, have you ever seen a gun run up and shot someone NO .Its people that use guns that kill people,Look at how many people own guns to how many of the people that use then for wrong .I wish in Australia we could have guns it might stop all the house break ins.

                    • And more suicides as well? Stupid choice! What the heck do you think guns are meant for?

                    • People are stating guns kill people ,NO its the idiots that shouldn't have guns that kill people
                      ·
                  • Goodness me. Who needs a gun? I don't. Unless you are a target shooter or hunter I have no idea why anyone would want a gun. I'm pretty sure the more likely you are to have a gun the more likely it is that you will be shot. I have lived in America and found while Americans on the whole are lovely people they do tend to be vengeful and like to get even. We leave it to the courts, or at least I hope we still do.

                    • I think most people in the United States of America own a gun of one kind or another. I think they as a people are happy to live that way in there own country. I think they find it normal to bare arms & have weapons around themselves. They have grown up with guns all there lives.
                      ·
                      • I think police kill too easily with guns as well. There are some off people out their who aren't stable...some have lost their mind. Cops sometimes could find better ways to disarm people.

                        • If one day a civil war brakes out in the United States of America over something that upsets the American people in a big way, then you might see guns blazing everywhere & chaos will rein. Nothing would surprise me.

He got rid of it a few years later tho. I think the biggest problem in Australia is break ins and murder suicides...with guns. Violence on TV...and MOVIES... doesn't help neither.

                          • Even if you tried to ask the American people to hand over all there weapons' to the government or military, you will probably find a massive resistance to that & most people would not comply in my opinion.

                            • I think there are thousands of guns & assult rifles etc in homes in the United States of America & I think they are happy to live with there weapons. I think the public there like to have arms & it makes them feel secure. Try to take there weapons away & you will have war on your hands in my opinion. A number of Americans believe they have the right to own a gun or any other deadly weapon.

                              • I think everyone has a right in the United States to defend themselves from who ever attacks you. Having a gun is a deterrent, even if a lady carries her hand gun in her hand bag, incase she is robbed or about to be raped. I think the United States is becoming a more violent place to live. People feel safer if they carry a gun or deadly weapon for personal protection on them. I think American citizens are now use to carry guns with them or have them in there cars or homes.

                                    • There are people, Farmers, Police, Military who need guns, shot-guns, rifles, pistols and Yes, the US Constitution does give people the Right to own a gun. However we can be very, very certain that the people who wrote that amendment to it never, ever either intended, or even envisaged, that this amendment would be so bastardized so as to allow Private Citizens to buy, own and keep in their possession the sort of Military Weapons - capable of firing over many miles and with an almost unlimited number of rounds. Certainly No American - nor anyone else anywhere else in the world - who is a Private Citizen has any need whatsoever for these types of weapons. which should only be available to SERVING Military Personnel when in a combat situation. It is beyond time the Unelected National Rifle Association of the USA (NRA) was pulled into line, had it's entire capital frozen and then abolished. Of course America's politicians are a gutless bunch of fools who are scared stiff of offending those running the NRA. The politicians and that includes whomsoever is the President are Not Running the USA - the Unelected NRA is.

They would have to be registered and always be kept in a safe place. I'm so glad that I don't live in America where every Tom, Dick and Harry can own a gun. From what I hear its so easy over there to get one and it seems to make some individuals feel tough. well I agree with a lot of you, its not the gun, its the tough guy holding it...

All people of retirement age should be given the option of carrying a weapon and should be brought to a standard of handling it efficiently. At least that way, older people have the ability to defend themselves because the Govt sure as hell doesn't give a damn and seems incapable of enacting simple legislation to make crime something that doesn't pay.

                                                          • I thought you had a Constitutional Right to Bare Arms which is easily allowed by wearing Short Sleeved Shirts. I have a few friends in the US who insist that because of bears they need a Rifle with a 200 Round Magazine where as I have found if I could not stop a Feral Animal with 3 rounds from a WW1 303 I shouldn't be caring a rifle as all I'm doing is antagonizing the animal and making it much more likely to hurt me. Way too many people buy firearms never know how to use them and hurt themselves or worse still that weapon for their protection gets used to kill them again simply because they do not know how to use it and are unwilling to use it they think that showing it will stop anyone who wishes them harm when it is actually much more likely to make the aggressor do something unexpected and hurt you. Also why Assault Weapons they where never available when the US Constitution was written could not have been envisaged by those who wrote the addmendement and are only good to shoot people which is exactly what they where designed for so why is there an insane belief that so many Americans need several? Then watching people who should know better pickup firearms pull the trigger without checking to make sure there is no cartridge in the breach and shooting people through stupidity makes me wonder if they deserve to have any weapons at all as way too many are way too silly to touch a firearm let alone pick it up. As for the US Constitution while you may have a right to Bare Arms where exactly does it say you have a right to Amination for these Firearms? If that was enforced it would be very true that Firearms do not kill people as clubbing another to death with a Long Arm would be it's only use and I'm sure people who would do that would just as willingly use a Baseball Bat or Cricket Bat to kill others. While you can never stop everyone stopping the accidents that happen far too regularly because of stupidity is the starting point you need to look at.

My housemate used to go shooting at primary school, in this country town, so they were taught safe gun handling techniques at a very young age. We have had murders here but I can't recall anyone being shot. However, easy access to a gun means it is easier to kill someone in anger. I don't think increased gun ownership is a good thing.

Americans seem more concerned with their so called right to bear arms they do not think of the rights of innocent people not to be shot and killed. Perhaps it has something to do with the psyche of hunters that it is a so called sport to hunt and kill animals that it has become acceptable in mainstream America that school children are not safe to go to school. Perhaps if politicians' children were massacred then perhaps gun control would become a priority.

America has far too many guns and stupid people who are allowed to carry them and think they are so macho. The laws in the US are weak regarding guns. I mean just look at the gun happy cops over there, perfect example. The constitution was formulated in the days of cowboys and Indians. That is no longer the case and America needs to bring their ridiculous constitution into the 21st century. Of course it's all about political greed along with public incompetency and stupidity.

Living in Australia, it is really only Sporting Shooters (SSAA members/Shooting athletes) and farmers who have a real NEED to own firearms. When i was little i used to go spotlight shooting with family friends on their farms. The target species were Foxes and Rabbits, occasionally for wild pigs/boars, introduced species who caused numerous problems on their farms. Occasionally the rifles came in handy when needing to kill stock (usually due to sickness or for personal consumption).

I live in Australia where handgun ownership is strictly monitored and controlled. It is not a constitutional right to own a gun here. This person is from the UK, where there are very few handguns around. We were both looking at the US with some alarm. I don't think that these people would kill anyway. You make it harder for someone to be violent and you give them greater opportunity to get the right sort of help.

The Constitution definitely needs an overhaul. Having said I would like to have a gun in the event that if someone breaks into my home I would not hesitate to shoot them. I was bought up on a farm and we had a gun and we were bought up to understand and respect the ability of a gun. Then in the Navy we used guns occasionally.

The first thing my Dad did when he got home from hunting, was clean his gun and lock it away. He always told us that we should always have a great respect for guns and treat them like they are loaded every time. Guns in the USA are a huge problem. I live in New Zealand.
                                                                                                                    ·

Evidence that it works can be foind in the per capita gun crime statistics for countires that have gun control (such as Great Britian, New Zealand and Australia) and countries like the United States that don't have any effective gun control.
                                                                                                                      ·

The only guns should be rifles and pistols. Innocent people will keep dying if there is no gun control. It might be a right to own a gun but it's a right to be safe from crazies with a gun. The ordinary family man does not need to own a gun. Farmers should make sure their guns are locked away and gun sports clubs members should be made to keep their guns at the club under lock and key.

All the mass killings, it's so sad to see. Look at Australia, it only took one bad event to change the laws. How many incidents have occurred in America. If you take away the guns, you take away the temptation to use them. Problem solved. Those gun making companies and lobbyist have a lot to answer for. They're the ones influencing the resist to change the laws and move forwards and there's people at the top buying into it. The more I look at America the more corruption I see. Unfortunately it's always the average citizens who get hurt and suffer for the greed of money.

How many irresponsible owners do not keep these guns in a safe place and children end up dead. Is i worth having a gun around children? Gun's represent violence and all you need is someone not in their right mind to shoot someone or as in America open fire in school's. How would you feel killing someone? Many soldiers come back from war and have trouble with mental health because they killed or seen a mutilated body. Often they cannot deal with this and end up committing .suicide. Guns should not be in the hands of civilians. When someone killed innocent people in Port Arthur the Prime Minister ordered people to hand in guns. We have not had an incident like this again. Why can't a President in the USA do this also?

Since the more guns and weapons they sell the more money they make. If guns became illegal and everyone had to surrender their guns they would loose so much money and shares. The top 3 weapons manufactures in the world are all American and it's billions of dollars worth. You may think the president has all the power but they don't, it's not just their decision.

Sadly in the US the push is on to remove this. They can't control people with corrupt government whilst they are armed. US lying MSM spread this narrative rather than share the many thousands of cases where a good guy with a gun averted a mass slaughter by shooting the attacker. A gun can sit in a corner and never kill anyone. It is the person behind that gun that kills. Removing arms from law abiding citizens only leaves the government and criminals with guns. Be very careful what you ask for. ;-)

I'd love to own a gun and I'd feel a lot safer if I had one. We now have a domestic army and Police force with military grade hardware and they're armed to the teeth by the very people who pleaded for us to give up our guns after Port Arthur. I can tell you, I'd feel better knowing I had a weapon to arm myself with when those who are supposed to be protecting me and other Aussies are macing us, kicking and beating us and shooting rubber bullets at unarmed civilians. This hasn't happened in the US due to their 2nd amendment. I've always wondered why, when PA was such a terrible tragedy, that EVERYONE wasn't interviewed by Police, why there were stories of a 2nd shooter killing people from another location while MB was allegedly killing people in another part of the settlement and why these people who weren't interviewed stated that they saw someone who did NOT look like MB shoot people sitting at the Cafe eating their lunches, with such precision that the tops of the heads came off and their brains fell into the bowls of food in front of them. WHY no Royal Commission for such a travesty? Every country about to undergo significant social change has a "false flag event" in order to change the status quo. For us that pivotal moment was when we, shocked to the core by the alleged actions of a mad man, allowed ourselves to be unarmed. For the US it was 9/11. All around the world patriots are deriding us for not rising up against the tyranny of our soldiers and cops who are being SO heavy handed, but we are paper tigers wanting to fight the NWO but our claws have been removed. It would be different if we still had our guns! Have a nice day.

However, CAUCASIANS (since caucasians are the majority in the USA) only enforced the constitutional amendments that affect them - favorable (such as gun ownership). The 13th, 14th, 15th amendments (to the constitution) were NEVER (as in ever) enforced by the SCOTUS, POTUS, and/or Congress - because these rights applied to BLACKS (gave BLACKS the same right as CAUCASIANS under the constitution - HAHA). The police departments in the USA have killed more citizens in the USA, then criminals do - every year starting in the late 20th century - (PERIOD). More people are killed by police departments in the USA (in the late 20th century) - in any ONE YEAR, then were killed by all THE police departments in England for all of the 20th century. Furthermore, criminals have not taken over England - and uniform police officers and plain cloth detectives do their job of policing without guns. People kill people (why is not IMPORTANT) - guns make it easier (because you can kill from a distance). When I ran the streets for four years as a teen-ager runaway - did I have a gun on me at any time - NO. I used my wits to survive on the streets for four years. Do I believe a private citizen in the USA shall be allow to own a gun - NO! Will the ability to get a gun illegally (and you can a gun illegally - quicker then you can a gun legal in the USA) or legally will change in the USA (during my lifetime) - NO! Will the carnage (killings) continue in the USA - YES. FYI: More people have been killed by drunk drivers in the USA (first plant for making cars was opened in the USA - in 1893) - then all wars (including the civil war) that USA has fought In. For some sad reasons (and the reason why we kill each other is not IMPORTANT - too late to stop the carnage) - my fellow Americans are FANTASTIC (thinking of new ways to kill each other) at killing fellow Americans!

I cannot understand how assault rifles can be sold to the normal man on the street. Aussies handed in guns years ago after a mass killing by one shooter in Tasmania in 1996 and since then no large shootings have occurred. There have been gang shootings and familicide deaths but not in the large numbers and usually not by shooting but some by fire, some by other means. If people want to kill others they find a way but why make it easy for them. I do not know if drugs play a part in these mass shootings or mental illness or radicalisation but whatever the reason it is so sad so many innocent people are caught in their line of fire. I guess taking as many guns off the street and out of the hands of individuals is at least one step to limiting these terrible instances.

It's a country that has alot of Violence. They just allow too many people to own a gun. America has never come out of the archaic...Wild-west days. It's still living in the past. The rest of the world cannot understand the mind of the average American. They need to catch up with the rest of the world. Yes, America is a very violent nation. They deserve much condemnation for their atrocious ways. It probably won't change under BIDENS...rule. Most American presidents haven't got the guts to touch the gun laws. Obama failed to improve the situation when he was in power. Mass murderers are common in the USA. School shootings. Druggies shooting each other. It should be a privilege to own a gun...not a right. Australia doesn't have your problem. Tho we do have some doing the wrong thing.

Always had guns around for hunting, etc. However, in MHO, the average Joe does not need a gun. There are too many guns out there. And the sad thing is, that it is going to get even worse.
