Meat: Supermarket or Butcher?

Do you buy your meat from a supermarket or a dedicated butchery? I recently heard that lots of in-house butchers were being laid off from supermarkets. It made me fell a tad guilty for buying my meat from supermarkets for about the past 30 years. So I decided I would find a local butcher and do my shopping from there in the future. To my great surprise the entry door was plastered with ads for jobs, full time, part-time or casual. Perhaps my feeling of guilt was not warranted. The meat was absolutely delicious; definitely better quality that what I had been buying from supermarkets for many years, though perhaps just a tad more expensive.

      If I could afford the prices it would be local butcher all the way. Unfortunately I can't. They are just too expensive. The meat is great quality, no question, but the budget only goes so far.

        Seems like butchers win. Looking back I think why I gave up shopping at butcheries is because where I was living in a suburb of Sydney there were certain things that they just did not sell such as pork and bacon, because of cultural reasons. It is time now to remedy that situation.

            The butcher I use has a loyalty card that accumulates dollar points everytime I purchase meat from them. Compared with supermarket meat the quality is much better and the price very competitive. Just before Christmas I buy bulk meats and receive up to a $50 or more discount off my bill from my loyalty card. So I get quality, my annual bonus, and for a few dollars more I am helping the small guys.

                          I used to buy my meat from the butcher but I had to decide what to buy, how much then worry about the cost. Yes, it was better quality but did cost more, but if I buy from the cold section it's all laid out, I can see what I'm getting and I know the price straight away. It's easier.

                              My local butcher cuts big bones to small pieces for my dog; sells liver for my dog; good, quality shop. I have to buy chicken neck from the supermarket. For myself...I don’t buy meat.

                                As a vegetarian,butchershops are a shop of horrors, happy not to see them in a supermarket, bad aenough to see meat packaged but at least it doesnt look like an animal anymore. Be kind,bechome vegetarian.

                                      Well here in Australia meat from Butchers is a lot more than a "tad" more expensive. I think they are getting laid off because the Supermarkets are starting to buy more pre-packed meat and that is when I will be going to the local butcher.

                                                    Sadly all the local butchers around here closed many years ago. Closest is a 40 min trip. With nothing else I need around there, it's not worth the trip for me. I Have developed a good rapor w the grocery store butchers, and can get good quality cuts when needed.

                                                                  Here we find the large Butcher Specialist has much better quality meat, is cheaper or the same price for the lower quality meet found in the supermarkets and far more friendly. So it's a No Brainer we go there get great meat and have a laugh with the guy behind the counter who is not trying to list the weight to the gram they just a Kilo is so much and you hsve whatever number of KG's it is.

                                                                      We mostly buy meat from Costco or B.J.s because the prices are lower and when we did go to the local butcher they didn't have the particular cut my husband was looking for. They closed a couple of months ago.

                                                                              I have supported my local butcher for over 20 years. The price difference is negligible because you don't get rubbish tucked beneath what nice cut you can see on the surface of the pack in the supermarket. I am keeping a local shop open with three butchers employed and I get good service, a lovely chat because they know me and my family and they often go out of their way to give me the best. Give me a genuine butcher anyday.

                                                                                                          Unfortunately many butchers have closed especially the ones in country towns where you would expect there to be more. The costs involved in running a shop like this are enormous, power to run fridges, rent, equipment, knife sharpening, etc. Supermarkets can run many forms of shops in one building now, bakery, butcher, groceries, gardening products. Lets support the local butcher, you get quality and know what you are getting, as well as a smile.

NEVER FROM SUPERMARKT, I bet many buy supposed food in packets and NEVER read the label if you buy chicken kiev and it has more than 5 ingredients, you are not buy food.

                                                                                                                        Absolutely the butchers, much cheaper as you don't pay for the wrapping. When supermarkets weigh the meat it's already in the tray and wrapped in plastic, that adds to the price. The butcher will cut meat to your needs and weighs it before wrapping it. The supermarkets tell you that they weigh their meat after it packed so they are open about the fact they are charging more.

                                                                                                                            We go to IGA and they have their own butcher and he isn't full time but their meat is very good and quite often at a reduced price. We buy lovely pieces of lamb rump I have never seen any where else and quite often they are big enough to get 2 meals out of them. Other meat like a leg of lamb we do buy those from Aldi. We occasionally buy some meat from the butcher. Brisket bones, lamb necks, ox tail (all pet food.) Not into any offal type meats like brains, livers, kidneys and I thought oh the cat would like them but then there is no way I am cutting them up for her Gross. I don't think I could eat kangaroo or camel or horse meat but would if I really really had too but I'd have to be desperate for protein.

However for those on very limited income I go to the supermarket for the economy meats such as sausages and mince.I'm sure the butcher has a stiff job these days to compete against the big supermarkets.

Supermarkets have also been known to wipe down their whole chickens with paper towels etc to stop the slimey stuff as they get older, instead of chucking them out! Many other untold horrors I get told by my Supermarket 'Deli' worker friend!!! EWwwww

They will put your meat into containers you bring with you, the NZ co Sistema make brilliant ones with rack so that the meat gets the air around it and any fluid drains below, With Supermarkets they use untold quantities of Plastic, plastic tray, plastic thingy which absorbs fluid then the tray is enveloped in miles of Plastic such as Glad or Cling Wrap.

                                                                                                                                                  I go to both - butcher is a bit further away so it depends on what time I have but I must admit though slightly dearer the meat from the butcher is much nicer and seems to have more flavour.

Not much of a range of meat and quite high prices. I pop into the butcher about once a month to see if they have anything worth buying and I'd definitely go more often if their range improves

My neighbor, Mike, who moved recently, was a Meat Cutter at a Pay Less grocery store here on Whidbey Island! He made good money, and was obviously a Butcher, but that sounds gross, so now they are called meat cutters instead. He did a fine job, and knew cuts of meat very well!

                                                                                                                                                                    The supermarkets have been keeping there meat longer so it is not as fresh. One of the supermarkets was caught washing there meat and turned over so as not to show the mold, I like butchers as you have cuts you can not but as the supermarkets. The supermarkets seem to have what they want to sell and not what you want. Some supermarkets make the ground meat with a lot of red coloring in it. The red dye has been outlawed it some places for causing cancer. Where I live it does not matter if the meat has dye in it or not as meat is to expensive to buy. Not to many people can buy a package of ground meat for $25.00 or more. Butchers have fresher meat and it is better for you, you know were your meat it coming from and you know it is fresh.

Fresh is best but there is not a lot of true butchers around anymore I don’t eat a lot of meat these days

They sell in smaller quantities, therefore, they need to make more of a profit. Also, there is no middle man to cut into the profit, but the farmers are the ones who deserve the biggest profit. It takes an incredible amount of work to raise cattle, and it takes a professional butcher to do a good job. Butchery does require knowledge and skill. My dad used to butcher our own meat, and he knew exactly how to cut it so it wouldn't be stringy and would be tender. He looked for those points when he shopped in the supermarket after we quit farming. One reason, I never liked going to the butcher shop was the smell. I have kind of a weak stomach for raw meat. I could never be a butcher! I have no one to cook for so I buy very little meat, but the butcher shop is probably fresher. Some people insist on aging beef, but Dad was adamant about getting it processed as soon as possible and cooking it till it was well done. That's how most people in this area do. This is a farming community from way back!
