Discussion of the Day
Fireworks and the dangers of putting them off without a license
Debra D 62478013-Jul-24
Do you think it is right for small communities to put off fireworks by neighbours with no license or permission?
What are the dangers of fire and also of injury doing this?

just ban all fireworks, I can't find any sane reason why we should blow up stuff for someone who tried to blow up Parliament back in the day, we are celebrating a criminal who did an insane act against a criminal government of that era

It's the underpaid and often under appreciated firefighters and hospital staff who bare the burden. So stressful for animals too. Have a public display, fireworks could be 60 plus license.

Well children should never shoot fireworks unsupervised and small communities should be able to shoot fireworks responsibly as adults to ensure there aren’t any injuries while enjoying the fireworks

Well only professional people should be dealing with these products when their is a special occasion going on,they have been trained in pyrotechnics and know the rules and safety there far too many idiots out don't have a clue it is the news all the time leave it to the professionals thank you.

Putting them off? I think they meant to say, setting them off? People need to go back and proofread their product and the things they write.

For me it is special. My dad passed away and was buried 5 Nov. To loose the right to let of fireworks or see others letting them off would be really sad. Once again our fun and freedom's will be gone because of a select few being stupid. Just because you have a piece of paper saying you passed something does not make us safer. Anything can go wrong as well as everything can go well.

Around November back in the UK..when I was 12..I could go to a local shop and buy as many explosives as I could afford..some amazingly powerful rockets too...nobody cared what I was going to do with them...now..in Australia...unless I live in Canberra...or have them smuggled for me from Canberra...I'm not allowed anywhere near one as they are very dangerous..and I'm sure that the world is much better place because of these restrictions..... not so sure about Canberra...

At least let the neighbours know. A few months ago there was an 18th birthday being celebrated, with fireworks. If we had been told we could have shifted our horses. Two of them went through a barbed wire fence and were badly injured. A vet job. Did the neighbour care? Not one little bit. I hope his chickens turn into ostriches and kick his henhouse down!

Except for sparklers which the children mostly hold and ooh and ahh at, fireworks are illegal in my state. Bc the fire danger is soooo incredibly high, we have many statewide sponsored firework displays free of charge to attend and the pro's do the work so the risk of fires starting and injuries from regular people messing around, is reduced significantly. You can go to jail if you are caught with them. I'm over it at my age, but for the sake of children I'll go and participate having food and fun with family or friends. 🇺🇸

When I was young we celebrated Empire Day which was a day off school allowing us the day to collect wood etc. for a bonfire with a Guy on top. When the day was removed from our celebrations I lost interest and really have no idea when they have crackers now apart from New Years eve. Dad used to buy a bag of crackers, rockets and pinwheels amongst others but one year he had a Roamn Candle which said it could be held in a gloved hand. Dad lit it and held it in a gloved hand and it made beautiful colours before making a loud bang blowing the glove to bits. Had my father been holding it in a bare hand he would have suffered an injury. Having seen that I have always had a healthy fear and respect for crackers which could explain why today I have no interest in them. So yes, they can be dangerous. I don't remember the date of Empire Day but I remember it was cold.

Public free display is good for everyone so I'm all for that. One night only unless it's a big public celebration like Sparks in the park where it's done safely for families to enjoy.

There are injuries every time this is allowed animals are frightened & people scarred for life . I think all fireworks except the 2 celebrations per year set off only by certified people. This rule will save lives & heartache.

It depends on the area, the weather, the season doesn't it? The problem is that unthinking people decide to let them off in the middle of the Summer or during the Annual Fire Ban Season and never during the Wet or winter months when it is relatively safe to do so. If a Community wants to have a show then by all means they should be allowed to have it BUT get the OK from the local council, the Country/Rural Fire Services firsat. One of the big problems is that people with no experience or knowledge of the dangers involved, the care they must take to protect themselves and others are very often the people who light them. It all comes down to commonsense doesn't it? In our area during the Dry Hot Bushfire Danger period almost without fail, and often the same people, decide that just because a Total Fire Ban has not been declared it means they can do a bit of a Burn Off with disastrous results which not only burn out other people's houses, land but the Mostly Volunteer Fire Fighters with the Country/Rural Fire Services put their lives at risk having to deal with stupid decisions by stupid people.

I agree, they should have permission to put them off, and it should be decided with the higher ups checking out the situation to see how dry it is, is it a safe area to put them off in etc.

In the last few years we have had quite a few Chinese move into our area and on their 'special New Year's nights' we hear them letting off big bangs but they seem to be careful in what they do. After all they invented the very first fire crackers, so they seem to be more careful than most, over 1,000 years experience!

The rotten things were banned for a reason, unless it was done by licenced people who I expect would have insurance if things went awry. I know people reminisce about the old days, the fun, the bonfires, the cracker nights. If you had responsible parents you could enjoy these under supervision. I still remember being burned by a sparkler. And what about all those kids who had a hand or eye blown off. This rubbish has come back because of the migrants who import them illegally and sell them. Why isn't this picked up at customs? Just report it to police - in writing- with details. If something happens to your home or property, at least you can tackle your insurance.

If you complain of Facebook pages, they call you a "Karen" and say that it's their right and their culture to shoot off fireworks and that they don't care about your dog, your kids or veterans. There are fires sometimes.

I think in Canberra you can get crackers unless that has changed. Every where else they are banned. There was an article in the paper a long time ago where a man put his wife's ashes in some fire works ( he'd hired a licensed professional to do that.) His reason for doing it was his wife was the spark in his life and he wanted her to go with a bang of bright colours to match her personality. Plus the neighbours got to enjoy the display as well. They are dangerous in the wrong hands always best to get a pro.

If you are silly enough to get a Mortar of any description and hold it in your hand to set it off you get exactly what you deserve but use it correctly you'll get a lovely sky display so if you are incapable of comprehending the instructions you are unsafe to use anything at all and should be placed into a position where you are incapable of harming yourself, a white long sleeved jacket that arms tie behind your back and medication that leaves you drooling down your chest is the best option for you individual were as everyone else is All Right to handle them. There will always be accidents, next you will want drivers licences only to people you think should have them, THIS KIND of thinking is very dangerous. Fireworks have been around for centuries and less dangerous, than people who have narrow thinking.

I remember them being outlawed and having to have them removed from all residences due to accidents( mainly children) setting them off in local parks or using them for pranks. I love regulated fireworks displays. By councils/ city's as they usually are organised by professionals and all safety considerations are met. People where I live have set them off at home. I understand the ideology behind why, they are exciting, beautiful, they share it with their community. But living in a bushfire prone area I find it's a dangerous practise, especially I'm summer when this type of thing is most common. I have know people who have lost part of a finger, been burnt or started fires because of ill thought out or no planning involved in setting them off. Home made is even worse as I have seen those too. Best leave it to the pyrotechnics specialists. I also believe they are quite expensive now to purchase.

New technology for fireworks are a lot better. For example drones are being successful at displaying real like fireworks. It is safer as it won't cause fires and so on. Fireworks are horrible on domesticate animals and wild animals. My 2 dogs go crazy with fear when they hear fireworks. I feel for the animals that are outside during fireworks. Fireworks are plainly horrible. Some people are not responsible enough to handle them.

We had an hour and a half of fireworks near us, with only one way in and one way out back here over a mile back into a dead end road. They put 36 of the loud ones off back to back, I could hear them sizzling in the tree tops and the law said they could do nothing about it even though it was past 11:00 at night. We have been having a severe drought here, grass is all brown and dead, and they still did this. It is very scary, we have a wild yard, the animals were terrified, there is not even a fire hydrant back here, the water company says the water lines are too small, and refuse to dig them up to put in new bigger lines.

In this area, they are rare. Indeed one is too many, and could injure someone permanently. I'm not sure that the government can protect the general public There needs to be a Common Sense Law because that's the cause of a lot of accidents, aka as carelessness. Personally, I have little interest in fireworks. I know that's odd, but when I was dating a veteran with severe PTSD, I realized that they can cause flashbacks to veterans. It seems itonic to me that we celebrate winning a war by using gunpowder and loud blasts that veterans hate! After he told me this, I lost interest in fireworks, and thought people should consider veterans when putting them off. The last thing they need is the sound of firearms going off!!! That's how I currently feel, and I think we need to be more considerate of our veterans. They already are treated like second-class citizens and have little to no income or benefits for the sacrifices they've made. My b/f was a medic in Iran and Afghanistan, and saw the worst of the worst! He even told the dirt on our own soldiers. Our army is far from innocent, and soldiers are forced to do things that are truly unethical! Pray for peace worldwide! Don't vote for Trump and his 2025 Plan! Why is he acting like he's in control when he's nothing more than a lying convicted felon! Think about that statement. Did you ever think it would be acceptable for a felon to run for President and lead a cult and quote Hitler! He will do ANYTHING for power and kill whoever gets in his way! Even if he loses, we will be in deep crap by the MAGA party! Once he's in office, he will be the last president we ever have! I thought that and also heard others say that about the wannabe dictator! He has insulted our veterans, but would do nothing to that extent to help our country. He's too good to fight. You can't fight from a pedestal that people have put him on!

Sparks can land on roofs, trees and anything else in the area, and the after effect of paper trash sometimes can even be found in my yard. ;-(

A school roof caught fire in my neighbourhood one year and the perps just ran away and sat quietly. Injury to persons are frequent and I'm sure they regret that too. The need for private night shows is almost irresponsible as they may not seriously consider: 1- terrifying some animals and other people nearby. 2- the fire department could be more busy with real issues than to be monitoring flame throws. 3- why do some people stand entranced by this, love to hear loud popping sounds and see lights flaring, but can't cope with real warfare? Do blind people care? 4- what if the night sky fires back...fires (really do) work! 5- I don't find fireworks in that form to be absolutely necessary for celebrations of any sort.

Safeguards are put in place - people are trained in the use of fireworks, they are a safe distance from the general public, and there are no nearby fire hazards. However, fireworks in the hands of the general public are not such a great idea. You hear of accidents - fires started, amputations (Pro Bowl football player, as an example), eye injuries. While most people would be considerate and conscientious about using these, all it takes is one joker to ruin things.

However, projectiles and explosive fireworks are 'illegal' everywhere in the state of California. All in all, the money could be put toward better activities to celebrate.

My Gosh, where do you live with all these damages. Fire works are banned in Australia apart from none projectiles, Don't your police enforce the laws.???

I hate the fireworks. They scare my cats and I have to worry about my house . We live right by a lake they could at the very least walk or drive down to the lake and do it.

However, when I took my children years ago to the Children's Hosp. they had photographs of the injuries received such as lost hands, holes in the cheeks, lost eyes, etc. When I was young we all had them to set off in the street or backyard and never realised the dangers. I did when we were in a country town and they set the rockets off that went through all the crowd with everyone grabbing their kids and hitting the ground. Leave it to the experts. They put on a much more spectacular show anyway.
