Fireworks and the dangers of putting them off without a license
Debra D 62478013-Jul-24
Do you think it is right for small communities to put off fireworks by neighbours with no license or permission?
What are the dangers of fire and also of injury doing this?
Comments
  • Bad luck!
    ·
    • It's the underpaid and often under appreciated firefighters and hospital staff who bare the burden. So stressful for animals too. Have a public display, fireworks could be 60 plus license.
      ·
      • Animals can be locked up until the fireworks are over. No need to complain about them if they are safe. Animals also can get hurt by lightning strikes. How many people bother to concern themselves with lightning? Animals prob get scared by thunder too. You cannot protect your animals from all bad noises . Get over it for fs!

        • People are trying to take the fun out of our lives these days. Surely with all the misery going on in this world the least we can do is have a bit of fun. Some people just like to ruin it for everyone else. No wonder some people turn to drink, alcohol, violence these days. The fun-police are trying to stop people having some enjoyment in their lives. Everything we do carry's some risk. Our society is becoming like robots. Loosing the spontaneous spark to our lives.

          • That's true, kelli. Kids should not . But as a kid I knew what was doing. Lol.
            ·
            • Well children should never shoot fireworks unsupervised and small communities should be able to shoot fireworks responsibly as adults to ensure there aren’t any injuries while enjoying the fireworks
              ·
              • It's legal where I live. Mind your own business!
                ·
                • Well only professional people should be dealing with these products when their is a special occasion going on,they have been trained in pyrotechnics and know the rules and safety there far too many idiots out don't have a clue it is the news all the time leave it to the professionals thank you.

                  • Today is July 13, and i heard someone put one off last night again. They do not know when to stop here at all.
                    ·
                    • Maybe you should take it up with your community or town folk. What do you expect us to do?
                      ·
                  • For me it is special. My dad passed away and was buried 5 Nov. To loose the right to let of fireworks or see others letting them off would be really sad. Once again our fun and freedom's will be gone because of a select few being stupid. Just because you have a piece of paper saying you passed something does not make us safer. Anything can go wrong as well as everything can go well.

                    • It's political correctness gone mad again. Soon you won't be able to ride a bike .

                  • Around November back in the UK..when I was 12..I could go to a local shop and buy as many explosives as I could afford..some amazingly powerful rockets too...nobody cared what I was going to do with them...now..in Australia...unless I live in Canberra...or have them smuggled for me from Canberra...I'm not allowed anywhere near one as they are very dangerous..and I'm sure that the world is much better place because of these restrictions..... not so sure about Canberra...
                    ·
                    • Canberra isn't the only place. Legal in Northern territory and Tas. I don't think it's a safety issue. It never was when we were kids .
                      ·
                  • At least let the neighbours know. A few months ago there was an 18th birthday being celebrated, with fireworks. If we had been told we could have shifted our horses. Two of them went through a barbed wire fence and were badly injured. A vet job. Did the neighbour care? Not one little bit. I hope his chickens turn into ostriches and kick his henhouse down!
                    ·
                    • I am so very sorry about your horses, and I too pray the chickens kick down his hen house and don't ever lay any eggs for him.
                      ·
                  • Let us have fun and only take the fire work away from the wrong people
                    ·
                    • I don’t see a problem people have been doing this for years
                      ·

The only problem is you, lady! Just because not everyone has your problem doesn't mean we all should care or give a stuff. Sort out your issues with your authority or people in charge. Why should the rest of us care?

                      ·
                      • Except for sparklers which the children mostly hold and ooh and ahh at, fireworks are illegal in my state. Bc the fire danger is soooo incredibly high, we have many statewide sponsored firework displays free of charge to attend and the pro's do the work so the risk of fires starting and injuries from regular people messing around, is reduced significantly. You can go to jail if you are caught with them. I'm over it at my age, but for the sake of children I'll go and participate having food and fun with family or friends. 🇺🇸

                        • When I was young we celebrated Empire Day which was a day off school allowing us the day to collect wood etc. for a bonfire with a Guy on top. When the day was removed from our celebrations I lost interest and really have no idea when they have crackers now apart from New Years eve. Dad used to buy a bag of crackers, rockets and pinwheels amongst others but one year he had a Roamn Candle which said it could be held in a gloved hand. Dad lit it and held it in a gloved hand and it made beautiful colours before making a loud bang blowing the glove to bits. Had my father been holding it in a bare hand he would have suffered an injury. Having seen that I have always had a healthy fear and respect for crackers which could explain why today I have no interest in them. So yes, they can be dangerous. I don't remember the date of Empire Day but I remember it was cold.

                          • The Northern territory and Tasmania still allows fireworks night, once per year. Saying that, people still have to be licensed to use them.
                            ·
                            • Public free display is good for everyone so I'm all for that. One night only unless it's a big public celebration like Sparks in the park where it's done safely for families to enjoy.

                                • You can't save all people from stupidity! There will always be a very small minority who do the wrong thing. Very few people are injured by fireworks in Australia, as they are restricted but not banned entirely to the public. A permit to buy fireworks and crackers means that you are responsible for any damages you do to someone or an animal. I can't speak for North American people, but Aus has strictly implemented controls over fireworks. Every major city in Australia had the traditional fireworks at New year festivities. They are safe and it's rare to hear of any injurys these days. Even as a kid it wasn't that common to hear of many people hurt. It was a tiny minority. They should not have restricted them but allowed everyone to buy them pending the age of 18+. Only then the anti-fun police step in a get all this restrictions. Now people have to pay hundreds of dollars to government authorities to get a permit to use them. And they need a larger property to let them off on. So it's rare to hear of anyone getting hurt from fireworks and not that many did . What are we going to ban next, bikes? Firecrackers and certain fireworks can be purchased over the internet, as long as you pay for a permit and have council approval. Those that do this are 99 percent responsible. Only about 1 percent are careless and usually it's just adults who might get a bit injured, and not kids and animals. They are very safe compared to most human activities. So dumb comments on here are making me feel sick.😬

                                  • There are injuries every time this is allowed animals are frightened & people scarred for life . I think all fireworks except the 2 celebrations per year set off only by certified people. This rule will save lives & heartache.

                                    • No there isn't! Lol Where do you get your information from?
                                      ·
                                  • It depends on the area, the weather, the season doesn't it? The problem is that unthinking people decide to let them off in the middle of the Summer or during the Annual Fire Ban Season and never during the Wet or winter months when it is relatively safe to do so. If a Community wants to have a show then by all means they should be allowed to have it BUT get the OK from the local council, the Country/Rural Fire Services firsat. One of the big problems is that people with no experience or knowledge of the dangers involved, the care they must take to protect themselves and others are very often the people who light them. It all comes down to commonsense doesn't it? In our area during the Dry Hot Bushfire Danger period almost without fail, and often the same people, decide that just because a Total Fire Ban has not been declared it means they can do a bit of a Burn Off with disastrous results which not only burn out other people's houses, land but the Mostly Volunteer Fire Fighters with the Country/Rural Fire Services put their lives at risk having to deal with stupid decisions by stupid people.

                                    • I agree, they should have permission to put them off, and it should be decided with the higher ups checking out the situation to see how dry it is, is it a safe area to put them off in etc.

I know people reminisce about the old days, the fun, the bonfires, the cracker nights. If you had responsible parents you could enjoy these under supervision. I still remember being burned by a sparkler. And what about all those kids who had a hand or eye blown off. This rubbish has come back because of the migrants who import them illegally and sell them. Why isn't this picked up at customs? Just report it to police - in writing- with details. If something happens to your home or property, at least you can tackle your insurance.

We used to love our Bonfire and Fireworks nights, I realize that in some areas where there are fire risks, maybe not to have fireworks. But, for the rest of us live and let live.

If you complain of Facebook pages, they call you a "Karen" and say that it's their right and their culture to shoot off fireworks and that they don't care about your dog, your kids or veterans. There are fires sometimes.

They have a curfew but it was ignored. 1am, 2am crackers were still going off. Yes Fireworks and crackers are different. I think in Canberra you can get crackers unless that has changed. Every where else they are banned. There was an article in the paper a long time ago where a man put his wife's ashes in some fire works ( he'd hired a licensed professional to do that.) His reason for doing it was his wife was the spark in his life and he wanted her to go with a bang of bright colours to match her personality. Plus the neighbours got to enjoy the display as well. They are dangerous in the wrong hands always best to get a pro.

If you are silly enough to get a Mortar of any description and hold it in your hand to set it off you get exactly what you deserve but use it correctly you'll get a lovely sky display so if you are incapable of comprehending the instructions you are unsafe to use anything at all and should be placed into a position where you are incapable of harming yourself, a white long sleeved jacket that arms tie behind your back and medication that leaves you drooling down your chest is the best option for you individual were as everyone else is All Right to handle them. I remember them being outlawed and having to have them removed from all residences due to accidents( mainly children) setting them off in local parks or using them for pranks. I love regulated fireworks displays. By councils/ city's as they usually are organised by professionals and all safety considerations are met. People where I live have set them off at home. I understand the ideology behind why, they are exciting, beautiful, they share it with their community. But living in a bushfire prone area I find it's a dangerous practise, especially I'm summer when this type of thing is most common. I have know people who have lost part of a finger, been burnt or started fires because of ill thought out or no planning involved in setting them off. Home made is even worse as I have seen those too. Best leave it to the pyrotechnics specialists. I also believe they are quite expensive now to purchase.

I should know as I grew up with them. We still permit fireworks under certain criteria. So stop bullshiting! Kids who got hurt were in the minority. I used to light them as a kid. As did other family members. No injuries because we were careful and not stupid like a few. Do we ban kids skateboards and bikes too, what about swings? Grow up!

There are too many idiots that have no thort for others that can currently let them off in NZ. The stress on animals can be horrendous. Laser lite type entertainment may be better- less noise, maybe less pollution

It is people that think like you that have made me change my mind of allowing anyone to let off fireworks. Maybe you should spend some time in accident wards and vet clinics after fireworks have been irresponsibly let off. Humans are slowly killing themselves [and the environment] off so no worries-no I'm Not a greeny

Hospital wards? Not that many people got injuries from fireworks. I didn't know anyone who got hurt. Most people had responsible behaviour towards them. Those that did get injuries were very much in the minority. And animals weren't hurt usually. They move quickly and are not stupid. It doesn't hurt the environment. Keep your big fat mouth closed! It's people like you that ruined others funtimes. It was always a good time spent with family. Pathetic comments!

For example drones are being successful at displaying real like fireworks. It is safer as it won't cause fires and so on. Fireworks are horrible on domesticate animals and wild animals. My 2 dogs go crazy with fear when they hear fireworks. I feel for the animals that are outside during fireworks. Fireworks are plainly horrible. Some people are not responsible enough to handle them.

And you probably have one of those too! It rarely that they are a fire risk. Never knew any that caused any fires . Injuries are rare. Only drunken swines who don't know what they are doing cause them. But still uncommon as fireworks aren't readily available in Australia anymore. So it's not a major issue. And idc what happens in North America. Not our problem! We have good safety laws in Australia . Go and get a F life! You another old fool!

We had an hour and a half of fireworks near us, with only one way in and one way out back here over a mile back into a dead end road. They put 36 of the loud ones off back to back, I could hear them sizzling in the tree tops and the law said they could do nothing about it even though it was past 11:00 at night. We have been having a severe drought here, grass is all brown and dead, and they still did this. It is very scary, we have a wild yard, the animals were terrified, there is not even a fire hydrant back here, the water company says the water lines are too small, and refuse to dig them up to put in new bigger lines.

Indeed one is too many, and could injure someone permanently. I'm not sure that the government can protect the general public There needs to be a Common Sense Law because that's the cause of a lot of accidents, aka as carelessness. Personally, I have little interest in fireworks. I know that's odd, but when I was dating a veteran with severe PTSD, I realized that they can cause flashbacks to veterans. It seems itonic to me that we celebrate winning a war by using gunpowder and loud blasts that veterans hate! After he told me this, I lost interest in fireworks, and thought people should consider veterans when putting them off. The last thing they need is the sound of firearms going off!!! That's how I currently feel, and I think we need to be more considerate of our veterans. They already are treated like second-class citizens and have little to no income or benefits for the sacrifices they've made. My b/f was a medic in Iran and Afghanistan, and saw the worst of the worst! He even told the dirt on our own soldiers. Our army is far from innocent, and soldiers are forced to do things that are truly unethical! Pray for peace worldwide! Don't vote for Trump and his 2025 Plan! Why is he acting like he's in control when he's nothing more than a lying convicted felon! Think about that statement. Did you ever think it would be acceptable for a felon to run for President and lead a cult and quote Hitler! He will do ANYTHING for power and kill whoever gets in his way! Even if he loses, we will be in deep crap by the MAGA party! Once he's in office, he will be the last president we ever have! I thought that and also heard others say that about the wannabe dictator! He has insulted our veterans, but would do nothing to that extent to help our country. He's too good to fight. You can't fight from a pedestal that people have put him on!

Sparks can land on roofs, trees and anything else in the area, and the after effect of paper trash sometimes can even be found in my yard. ;-(

Definitely not dangerous here for most people. The only thing I don't like much is the smokey smell. Sometimes they are hard to let off if it sprinkles with rain. Nobody seems to complain about the noise of cars and the noise they make when they let off their noisy car noises. Much worse than firecrackers or fireworks.🤯💥 Let off a whole group of them some years back. All the crackers going off at once. Lots of fun ! But you need to have approval to do anything these days. Pay money for a permit and a big enough property to let them off.
