Peter W. (Rewardia community member )30-Nov-20
Do you think there is any justice in the law and do you think the wealthy have an unfair advantage in matters of law?

The people that have money can pay a bond which allows them to go home and by the time they go to court they could be given a suspended sentence and never have to go to jail.

They sure do, us poor people can only afford a lawyer that is trying to make it to the top, so he/she can service the rich

No, money doesn't buy justice but it can pervert it, Trump obviously believes that other people's money has the ability to negate declaration of votes though. That TV anchor who said he should put on his big boy's pants definitely got it right

Not condoning excessive use of money to serve justice, but this topic does remind me of two of Aesop's fables. 1. Miser and his Gold : Miser who reduced his riches to a lump of gold, which he buried. Coming back to view it every day, he was spied on and his treasure stolen. As the man bewailed his loss, he was consoled by a neighbour that he might as well bury a stone (or return to look at the hole) and it would serve the same purpose for all the good his money had done him or that he had done with his money. Moral : money unused is wasted. 2. Wolf, Fox and Judge Ape : An Ape sat as judge between a Fox, accused of stealing, and Wolf, the accuser. After the trial, the Ape judged the Wolf lost nothing but the Fox stole it. Moral : The dishonest if they act honestly can still not get any credit.

There is justice if you can afford to pay for it handsomely. The other way is to control the judiciary so you get what you want i.e. Dan Andrews supposed commission into who did what and who was responsible for having private security in charge of the quarantine hotels in Victoria,

Yes of course it does, and it also buys injustice to the poorer person in the equation... High flying lawyers constantly use the threat of costs awarded against the complainant to scare them into dropping valid cases.

There should be a rule for one and not for those of wealth. Yes I do believe that money talks and have seen it on many an occasion having worked with "rich people" whose children got into scrapes. Those children never got to see the inside of a prison and it was just a gentle slap on the wrist for them. However I am happy to say that they turned into great citizens but that is not always the case.

I think it is time for justice to be seen to be done. Personally I think if you are caught stealing then there is a minumum time. If it is burglary with weapons (knife, gun whatever) then it should be 10 years, assaults again need to have a relative sentence. Murder should be life (not 25 years), paedophiles should be castrated and life imprisonment (never let out), rapists with violence - life, etc. Cruelty to animals is another where the sentences must be raised. This would stop the rich getting off which is seen too often but also send out the message you are not going to just get community service or a fine. I also do not think age, health, position should enter into the sentencing and definitely not the old I was on drugs or I had an abused upbringing line. Drugs are illegal and just like drink driving. The person decides to do drugs or drink. If there is mental diminishment then they should be put into a clinic or something for a period of time relative to the crime or condition until they are

Justice? I think think New has that anymore, Our Government doesn't want people being convicted it shows up in the Crime statistics which looks bad for them. I have meet a lot of Victims that have been treated badly while the Crims get all the help. 1 case was a couple whose Rural home was burgled and just about everything stolen including the contents of their pantry and freezer along with special paintings they had done. A witness rang the Police with the car details, & description of the driver. About a Month later the Police went to see the owner to be told he had sold the car but didn't know who to. A little while after that a man turned up at the Victims home and offered to sell them the paintings back for $4,000, they said they couldn't afford it so he said I can take your car as payment and gave them his name and phone number so they could let him know what they decided. They got hold of the Police straight away but about a year on nothing has been done. Another 1 was a drug fueled road rage incident,

I would think, well of course it does, that's what money is, it buys things! But, in terms of justice, I think the legal system is such that money can allow expensive lawyers to be bought, and even an appeal to a higher court can be bought to review a decision. But at the end of the day, not Judge nor Jury can be bought because that - according to legal system - would be injustice! If the latter two are bought, then they themselves can be taken to court!

Money can buy anything, anybody & power & that includes the Police, Magistrates, Juidges, Politicians. How often have we heard an accused person being treated with kid gloves because if the "reputation" - that simply menas they have money to buy their freedom.. If you are poor you haven't a hope in hell of getting Justice. Just look at how some of the Wealthiest Organisations in the World, such as the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Islamic, Jewish religious businesses got away with so much Child Sex Abuse until the outcry from the Public became too loud to ignore. They were all responsible for covering-up and protecting 1000s of paedophiles and they were also responsible for "Murder from a distance" - some call it Suicide, the 10s of thousands of lives they destroyed and they asll got away with it because those orgnaisations had the money to buy protection starting with the Police and then all the way up to the highest courts in the country.

In my experience shady lawyers are not that successful in court. In my experience, if people get off it's usually because the Police charged the wrong person. It's good lawyers - rather than shady lawyers - who get people off.) It's probably also worth noting that I've seen quite a few wrongful convictions.

A wealthy business man. He pretended to have loss of memory. His money was put on his wife so he pretended not to have the money to pay the shareholders. After the case his memory came back. If I remember correctly his shareholders lost a lot of money but he remained wealthy. They can hire the best crooked lawyers to get them off. The law is not just and never has been. A man kills his wife and will be freed after 6 years. What does it say for the law but that the judges and lawyers are crooked..
