Do you ever wonder who you came from?
Paul B27-May-22
Until you research your genealogy, you have little or no idea where you came from. It was very interesting to discover that my family on my father's side came from France in the year 1066 his name was Nigel (they didn t have sir names back then). He was the commander of William's army.

My father always told my brother and I that our family arrived in England with William The Conqueror. He knew that for sure and had researched the Doomsday book even seeing where the surname changed as it was misspelt. I always believed him but when I was diagnosed with a rare blood condition I wondered where it had come from so did a DNA test. When I got the results it was just as my father had told me, but what really surprised me was just how much Norman blood was still in the family. They must have inter married for generations and I have very little British blood in my DNA. For quite awhile I had next to no matches but during the first lockdown in England I got 50000 matches, some very close. The best match I had was my fathers cousin who knew nothing about my father or his family. It was sad when I found out that his sister had lived in Canberra for many years and none of us ever knew about each other. She unfortunately passed away about the same time as my father. My mother also took a DNA test and wasn't that fun. All of a sudden I was contacted by people wanting to know how we are related because there is no way of tracing as many don't know who their fathers were. We even discovered her family name isn't their real name. It did give me a bit of a headache trying to work out how we are related. In the end I had to give up. So dad's side was as he had always said, but mum's side is a mystery.

I can only go back to grandparents (Mothers side ) & great grandparents (Fathers Side) On my Mothers side my grandfather was born in Bombay India. I wonder about my heritage some say his mother was Indian ???I wish I could find out .On my Dads side his mother was born in Wales& all the rest were from Southern Ireland .My mother was Irish so all that side (with the exception of great grandmother )we assume were all Irish .I have tried to find out but Irish records are very difficult to navigate most are thru the Catholic church & you need to know the Parish

Do a DNA test with Ancestry. They are great and will tell you your ethnicity as well as what each parent gave you. It will also tell you how your ancestors moved around the world. It was well worth what I paid for it. The tests will probably be about $99 over The Queens birthday weekend. They are always on special over holidays.

That's exciting Paul. When people asked my Mother about her ancestors she used to say they were pirates. I have researched back to the 1000s on one branch of the family and 1400s on another branch. It is very interesting. Haven't found any pirates yet but my Mum may still have been right. Martin D., you can get information by joining free genealogy sites - I do and also get history from my sister who was given a subscription for her birthday. We compare notes every now and then. It is time consuming but worthwhile.

I have been researching free for over ten years. There are many free websites and you can access Ancestry via Australian libraries for free. Buying certificates to authenticate data can cost money but if you hook up with other people researching the same families you can share the costs and some will even give you a copy of a certificate for free. I don't know where you are in the word but Family Search website is free, Facebook groups are free...Trove in Australia is free, Australian BDM sites are free to search, Find-a-grave is free....... Go to your local library and see if they have family history groups in your area. They can guide you on how to search for little or no cost.

I know exactly where I have come from as we have 2 books about both sides of the family tree. One was written by my Mum's brother and he did his dad's side and was going to do his mum's side but it was too tragic and he decided he didn't want to. The other book is my dad's side and wow the dates in there go way back to like 1600's so we know a lot of the family really. Maybe more than most. The big book my aunt brought to Australia because it was so big. Plus some of the portraits of our ansecestors are in the London Museum maybe not on display but they are there I do believe. It is very interesting. My Ma was a poor potato farmers daughter and very much unwanted and she had a hard upbringing. Loosing Pa during the war wouldn't have helped either. Not knowing wether he was alive or dead for 4 years and having 2 children to raise by herself. She managed quite well and they lived in WA at the time. Pa ended going to Grace Hill to recuperate after WW2 so Ma had to go back to Ireland to be with him.

I was really into genealogy years ago. I am Irish, English and Scottish decent. I was also told that one of the names in my tree is actually French. I have Blanch in my tree and was told that in French it La Blanc. I use to tell people I was related to Matt La Blanc from Friends and one person actually believed me. I was also told that I have a bit of royal blood. An ancestor worked in a royal palace and got pregnant by the King. He shipped her off to Australia and she gave birth to a girl onboard. This baby married the son of a convict

Very hard to do it as in days gone by when a couple married the bride kept her maiden name and children took parents name .Boy-father .girl-mother. So off I goes to trace the link from grandfathers name but went out on wrong branch as his name is common over there.Mothers side was easy [thanks to a cousin] and Scottish and go back to 1770's.In fact we have a very heroic person in our list and he went to WW1-2 as a Salvo chaplain. On returning home he later became head of the Salvos for Eastern Australia. William McKenzie is his name and if you get books to read about him he was sure brave

That and the knowledge that I wil shortly return to Him, My Heavenly Father, through the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on the Cross to save me from sin and from eternal damnation in Hell. But I, a sinner, am saved by Grace and my acceptance that unless I confessed my sins and asked the Lord Jesus to forgive them and for Him to come into my heart and to cleanse me from all unrighteousness! As for the rest it's just DNA! I know that I don't WANT to know because there are skeletons hidden that should NOT see the light of day. Have a good day all.

I certainly didn't think I'd get any but I hoped that whoever came across it would possibly THINK about not only what the past looks like but imagine a future where there is no light, no goodness and no love just everlasting pain and the absence of those things that gave us a life worth living not only here on earth but forever! God bless your evening.

I really enjoy it but at times I really am disturbed by my desire to dwelve into the past. Part of it really does break my personal morals re. personal privacy. Some of my relatives would be horrified to know that I have read their personal medical histories and know some of their secrets that they very carefully guarded. There is a fine line between using history for knowledge and enjoyment....and going too far in not respecting the dead's right to not having their life evaluated and picked over. So as much as I love being a detective and experiencing great joy when I uncover something new....I also have to deal with some guilt over not leaving things as is. There is also the joy of finding out wonderful things that should be shared and celebrated. There are definitely two sides to genealogical research.
