Boys and their toys
Smooch - Vic16-Jul-25
What is it about men and their use of noisy garden tools like chain saws and leaf blowers? I m aware that I m making a huge generalisation here, but the vast majority of people who use these things are male, and I genuinely don t understand why it s necessary to rev these machines in the downtimes, when they re not actually doing anything productive. Please explain?
Comments
  • I run the leaf blower to run the battery flat, its better to completely charge it up than top it up all the time. Lawn trimmer is petrol so I will rev that to clear the fuel line.

Your welcome Smooch, you were asking a question not pronouncing a judgement😀

  • I think alot of people have their differences but I would think someone would Rev it up so the chainsaw doesn't turn off while in idle
    ·
  • We live on the second floor with no garden hence no noisy toys the bird's make all the noise it's a noise I will put up with.
    ·
    • How do you know they are not doing anything productive? It all depends on family and the lives they live on? I know my family member use it when needed. I know my family member use it for their backyard. I used it when I was staying in a house for snow ploughing or grass cutting.

      • Boys will be boys ! 😉
        ·
        • My partner is a fisherman, only uses tools when it's absolutely necessary, and usually at work. When I was younger and you could fix your own car my boyfriend and his mates would spend all hours tinkering and revving their cars. I don't know anyone though that just uses their tools simply to make noise.

          • I saw an older lady using a leaf blower on the road the other day. (it wasn't male). Maybe it helps prevent the motor from stalling. Then it just becomes a habit there after. Now trust me Neo robots will only use electrical equipment. Buy your self a gardening robot and teach it to spin it's fingers, it sounds better than a whipper snipper.

            • Uh...it's a "male" thing? My husband was NOT into yardwork, but puttered around almost all day in his home office on his computer/tablet, etc. No noise there!
              ·
              • I shudder every time my husband says he's going to Bunnings. He buys all sorts of things that he needs but then a couple of years later whatever it was goes on marketplace still in a pristine state. He switches between electric and petrol because some battery power tools are gutless apparently. I must say the electric gadgets are a lot quieter.
                ·
                • Mine buys fishing gear, his collection of fishing, camping, boating gear is " extensive". A trip to Anaconda,BCF or even our local bait and tackle is like watching a kid in a candy store.
                  ·
              • I have an electric chainsaw which I use to cut firewood if needed, a push mower. I think people that use petrol blowers are lazy and should use a broom!
                ·
                • Blame the manufacturer they invented the noisy tools!
                  ·
                  • Sorry Smooch, us ladies, without the help of a husband, have to learn to use all of the above, and unless you use these tools your garden and your house will look like a dump, and these tools motor noise, is set my the maker not us that use them, at least that the way mine work, just be grateful that someone to do the work for you,

                    • Work needs to be done.
                      ·
                      • Plenty of women use these tools too, if they can wrangle them from us ! we only use them as its usually our job to get things done outside, but would not consider revving them, unless I was trying to start the bastard
                        ·
                        • My husband does chainsaw work at times. I do not think that he revs it unnecessarily. Mowers seem to be noisy machines. At times I feel sorry for people doing shift work who are trying to catch up on sleep.
                          ·
                          • I've known men who use these tools, but they used them productively, not randomly. Why would anyone start a chainsaw unless they were going to use it, or a leaf blower, snow blower, weed wacker, or any other tool? I've never seen that done before. Now, when it comes to CARS, YES! They love to rev the engine, spin the wheels and drag race, all of which are a total waste of gasoline and tires! ;-D

                            • Men do this to be in

                              • At least men are getting things done, but it would be nice if these companies that make these power tools could figure out a way to make them less noisy!

                                                • And the Anti-Male Attack continues. Just how can those hedges get trimmed? That branch get lopped off or one which has fallen of some tree ger cut up? I don;t know of anyone who uses any of these, admittedly, noisy Chainsaws, Brushcutters, Leafblowers etc. who actually leave them running when not actually being used, from experince if I put any of these down on the ground and leave them rumming they simple start propelling themselves around putting my feet and legs in danger of being cut off, nor do I know anyone who actually revs them during downtime. Please get off our backs and let us do the jobs in the garden which need doing and be thankful we are prepared to do them. Maybe you should try to do them instead of your nagging criticsm? Then you may learn that we have no control over the noise the tools make, that being said there are now Battery Operated chainsaws etc. but they are not as powerful and the batteries do not last more than about 15 minutes - if we are lucky.

                                                  • Oh dear you have taken it as an anti-male attack. NAH, the noise is just so loud and often it begins at 7am. Yes, the jobs do need to be done and we appreciate it when done but in a lot of cases, the noisy tools are not necessary. Cars and motor bikes are also a noise pollution on the suburbia streets. A little consideration for the fellow neighbours is all we ask.

I was genuinely curious about why some users can’t just let them “idle”, and feel the need to rev the motors for the heck of it when they’re not actually blowing leaves or cutting tree limbs etc.

I clean up the neighbourhood and shred the leaves for mulch for my fruit trees, the sticks go in the shredder, the logs get chopped with the chainsaw. Yesterday my son learnt to use a dropsaw outside, chopping up smaller logs for the fireplace. I have an amazing productive garden and would not be able to maintain it without power tools. Cars and trucks are just as loud, should we all walk everywhere instead so we don't make a noise?

Neighbours dogs that bark day and night are a much bigger problem in our area. There is one in particular that barks so often during the day and night I wonder why the owners actually have him/her.

It's a bit hard to do garden and property maintenance in the time frames clients expect without using power tools. It is much faster and more efficient to use a petrol whipper snipper, mower, hedger, edger, pole saw, chainsaw and blower than what it would be to use the non-powered equivalent. As a commercial operator, businesses are limited to power tool usage within the hours of 7am to 7pm weekdays and shorter hours if work needs to be completed of a weekend. If it is a neighbour being noisy for the sake of being noisy you have the option to make a noise complaint to "Snap send solve" or your local council, but if the noise is within the allowable hours, they may not be able to do anything about it.

The so-called landscapers at my apartment complex have broken my plants, chopped up flowers and broken my solar lights. They also wake me up. Leaf blowers are especially the worst. Unfortunately, the school district I work for, has the gardeners coming during school hours and I see a lot of kids having allergies on the days they come. I teach music to groups of kids outdoors and am required to stay close to the classroom. I got in trouble with the principal at one school for telling the guy with the leaf blower that he can't use it right there while I'm teaching kids. He called his supervisor and told on me! I think that some guys like loud things because engines and fireworks are powerful and it makes them feel powerful too. It's exciting to them. I miss the sound of rakes, hand shears and push lawn mowers.

I have always gone against the grain and had physical jobs, outdoor jobs. I understand office workers are needed, but i find nothing better than being outdoors and having something to show at the end of a hard day's work. Working in bad weather isn't always fun, but it's all part of it and something that you get used to. Thank you for having an office job so i didn't have to. :)

I leave him to it, not out of laziness, but due to the fact that he loves being outside and working around the property. I understand your reasoning, though.

I think I filter all the background noise out and concentrate on what I'm doing. I'm not sure that you can blame it on men, but people are wearing ear plugs which is a huge benefit to the user. I know that doesn't help the onlooker, but it could if it's that big of an issue for you. Women do the same things that men do so blaming men doesn't seem relevant to the times we're living in. In the past, women only used vacuum cleaners indoors. That has changed. The other day I was sitting in the hospital waiting room and two women were chatting. One told the other that she was out using the chainsaw and cutting down big trees. Then she mentioned that she also knew how to run the backhoe! I don't doubt that she was telling the truth. Perhaps I'm just not that sensitive or pay close attention to what others are doing. I do have close neighbors, and I've heard super loud vehicles go down the road, so what? If they don't get arrested, so what? If they bother me for ten seconds going past, so what? If it bothers you at bedtime, wear earplugs or have a little talk with the person that's bothering you. You just might make a life-long friend! It's how you approach the situation and the attitude of those involved. Don't let it fest. If it's a problem, address it now. Don't let it become into a major feud!

Women also generally still do the kitchen / housework jobs, so they get noisy toys like mixers, blenders, vacuum cleaners, etc., but those are inside so get muffled by the house walls and less heard by the neighbours. Reving anything is not usually necessary and I have no idea why fools do it. For some badly made or maintained tools, reving may be necessary to keep it from stopping. I also have no idea why idiots think a car wth an obnoxiously loud exhaust is better - they seem to think it makes their car more powerful, when in reality it doesn't, and usually makes it less powerful.

Perhaps a chainsaw. It's very wooded here, and my neighbors could enjoy it too!

Many of these gadgets run on 20 volt batteries and if they are not revved up regularly, they will stall out. In my area, more ladies than gents use outdoor power equipment. I use a leaf blower and it is as quiet as a mouse. My neighbor and I have the same landlord and Matt dos the mowing and I do the clearing of the sidewalks and walkways. I am 76 now and recovering from knee surgery in February and I am not allowed to walk too much yet.

Our yards border and are not fenced in. He's about 40 years old and likes to ride his motorcycle in circles around the back yard, revving it up likes he's a bad arse lol. My dogs go crazy, but he seems to be having so much fun I couldn't bear to say anything and spoil his fun! I forgot to mention he does this at 6 am before he leaves for work, then after 5 pm after he returns lol. However, he doesn't ride his motorcycle to work!

Not everyone's cup of tea I understand. One event we had over 200 riders, the sound was phenomenal. Still smile when I hear one coming down the street.
