You can insist on this as an option when purchasing. By the way, how many can actually change a tyre themselves these days? One also has to realise that cars are generally built in small countries these days, certainly not here in Australia and very rarely in USA, so those countries don't realise how far apart towns are here, therefore they don't have to worry about being caught out in 'Woop-Woop' like we do. Guess it is the reason most insurance companies are pushing Roadside Assist these days too.

The newer tires appear to be able to get one to a suitable destination safely if driving less than 80 km/hr. I have had that experience which I must say was very interesting in a modern car. My guess it means that if we are doing long trips we need to consider EVERYTHING we might need.

It means if you buy a NEW car you estimate by the mileage you do WHEN you may need a spare tyre check with RAC etc the cost of a tyre inc; fitting .It is a sign of the times NOTHING stays the same.Make sure you are an RAC (or equivilant) Member

I have never known of a car without a spare tyre so this must only be on these new cars. Anything to get more money out of it. Mine has the right size tyre but the most stupid of jacks I have ever used. I just ring roadside assist now as I am too old to change a tyre these days anyhow.

We always need and should have a spare tyre in the boot because when you least expect it, you will have a flat.

My cae (Mazda 2 Neo) has a spare tyre but it is smaller in tread width than the others So long as you don't druve above 80kph ut will get you to where your are going and lasst until your flat has been fixed. The main reason manufacturers stopped putting in regular sized spare tyres is because experience has shown that the vast majority of them never get used. My previous car was so well balanced that I could drive on just three tyres - admittedly I had to drive considerable slower. I never had to but the dealer took me on a Test Drive to demonstrate that what was claimed, unlike politicians claims, was true!

My car has no spare tire, it has run flats. I on the other hand have a spare tire that I wish would be flat. I’m working on it but I keep forgetting...lol...and leaving it for another day

In most countries it is illegal to sell a car with a bald spare tyre...but it is fine to sell it with no spare trye at all...it sounds nuts, but the logic is that as soon as you use the bald spare tyre you would be breaking the law!

My car is not that old it has a spare Tyre but it is a narrow version of what is on the car and it is just to get you to a garage. Why this has all changed is beyond me and it is an absolute pain.

It is nice to have as we have to drive 550 kms to a Capital City and in some parts there are no towns for a 100 kms plus. Brought a full spare as insurance, never used thankfully.

We bought our Honda with a space saver tyre which allows you to travel to the nearest service station. We have always replaced this with a proper tyre. We are with the RAC (WA) and so there is no problem if we need to have it changed. On the plus side is the fact that I quite often do not need them as with some women when in dire straights I just stand out of the car and look at it. lol. There has always been a gentleman to help. Also I do know how to change a tyre very easily as we used to have a petrol station many years ago and was taught by my hubby and also the value of keeping the car in oil, tyre pressure etc. The art of this has gone now in petrol stations as they are all self service which is a shame.

The car manufacturers that do this, even on SUV's, are cracked, do they think that everyone with with an SUV only does city driving, I would not buy a car with one of those stupid mini tyres, can't go over 80kms an hour. We are in the NRMA so that if we need a tyre changed at least they can help us out, our spare is under the car, so a bit tricky to get out, but if we were out in the bush somewhere, at a pinch, we could change the tyre.

always had a spare with every car we bought. always check it before going on a big trip (just drove from Vic to Darwin and back) and always get the mechanic to check it at services

I would love to have a spare tire when I tire but all I can do is retire. As for the four wheeled contraptions, down under, they come equipped with 4xtyre(s) and a spare to boot! My sole purpose is to never to change a tyre whether I tire or not! So far this has been a great achievement on my part and am contributing the the reduction of collisions ... easy, don't drive!

New cars come with run flat tires which are supposed to get you to the next place where the tire can be either replaced or fixed. They are supposed to be able to be driven something like 50 KMS at 60 KPH safely hence no need for an EXPENSIVE to the makers Spare Tire.

I haven't come across one either that didn't at least have one of those 'space saving' (the skinny ones) ones. I always assumed ( maybe wrongly?) that is was a requirement. Was this a private sale or through a car yard?

I only found out about this when discussing with friends that not all new cars come with a spare tire, so now I always check, as I would hate to get stuck with out a spare. Imagine getting stuck in the outback without a spare and the nearest help being 8 or more hours away?

shock horror , a few years ago we bought a new 4wd, ok no big thing happens daily in Australia but we lived in a country town and regularly travelled over 200 km to see family and day trips.NO, we didn't check if there was a spare because we took it as a forgone conclusion that the car have a working spare tier. Well the shock can when we discovered that we had a recovery tire, OH ya very handy to travel 200 km at 10phr to get to a servo to repair the tire or wait for help. All care should have a working spare regular size tire.

This is why I only buy vehicles that have full sizes spare tyres in the boot. I really hate the space saver tyres but I guess that is better than no tyre.

exactly. on my husband and our first date someone actually stole our spare tire while we at the movie. fortunately a group from pace industries down the street helped us out. who does that.
