What retirement?
EILEEN W 31055617-Jul-21
Have you made your plans for retirement or did you? What are they?
For the first months, I was bored so did relief teaching and volunteered with several community organizations. I joined an agency and found myself doing commercials for TV as well as stage productions as 'the old lady'. I now run acting courses for the Agency. I became a tutor and committee member for my local U3A. I began writing articles for newspapers and magazines. I traveled and began a little charity to build a kindergarten and then a volunteer school in Bali which keeps me visiting and fundraising. I joined a koala group, became VP, fundraising and knitting my special koalas for sale. I now visit schools educating students about protecting koalas. I am often called on as a guest speaker for community groups. When surveys ask my occupation my only option is RETIRED and I smile. What retirement?

    • I retired after we sold our Landscape Company. I helped a couple of young Mothers ( daughter and daughter in law) learn how to care for their babies and babysat while they furthered their education. I also spent much time caring for my Mom so she could stay in her own home. I have had no time to be bored!

                    • I kind of stopped working when I had my daughter who is now 2. I don't think I'll go back exactly, but just do some work now and again for fun, not necessarily because I need the money.

I enjoyed reading what people do with their retirement and I kind of worry what it will be like when I get to that age. Things seem so different now with technology and our habits I just wonder if it will be the same.

                                • Eileen W. Only 24/7 so how do you find the time. I retired at 65 after working for 50 years. I was only 15 when started.I took reluctantly redundancy at 58 and just did what I wanted. I met my now wife in 2004/ married 2005. I had a stepson to support so got a job as a girl’s high school cleaner. Now retired I don’t get any help from Centrelink as my wife works. I told interviewer that I would get a boat and drift off the coast and be a asylum seeker. I said you people can find all the resources to help NON tax payers and cannot help me after 50 years. She said I can’t comment BUT you are right. It’s a total JOKE. So now I have to tell lies to get help. My wife have separated but still together. This way I can get help.

                                  • Well said! You should be able to get part pension at least, or do they expect your wife to provide everything for you? That's tough cause you paid alot of tax.. over years.

                                  • I wasn't ready for retirement. I was forced into it by the female director of the Government agency I had been working for, she decided she did not want any males in the agency she was in charge of. She replaced me with THREE women - of course given the absurd structure of the Public Service it meant her Salary increased by a very substantial amount - the more staff she had under her control the bigger the salary. But I made the most of it, had a few part-time jobs until I moved into caring for an older family member. As Joe B says, I don't seem to have any spare time at all now - mind you being part of Rewardia takes up any spare time I have!

Since I retired I don’t seem to have much spare time…lol. COVID has buggered a few plans up but there are so many other things to do it don’t matter much

For me, I do not intend to retire until around age 70; I am still fit enough for my job, reasonably active and have an enquiring mind. Once retired thought, I will most likely go back to volunteering ......... life goes on no matter what your age ........

And despite whatever you once believed, Gosh darn it, you're still alive. You managed to survive your working years And retirement shines before you. Your spouse can nag you full time now, And your kids will still annoy you. Yes, these will be your golden years To live life as you please. You can play golf and power walk at the mall, At least until you give out at the knees. You can take up painting if you like, And spend all day painting flowers, That is until your hand cramps up After holding the brush for hours. Don't worry about getting dressed every day, You've earned the right to stay in your pajamas. All you have to do is turn on the TV, And watch your afternoon dramas. Sometimes life may get a little boring, Especially when you've no place to be. You can take up exciting hobbies, Like doing puzzles or watching birds sit in a tree. Yes, retirement has its highs and lows, But there's one thing not to be forgot. As long as you're above ground and not below, Retirement's the better of the lot.

Within months of my retiring The Global Crash happened and I lost over half of my superannuation. I have never recovered that financial loss and we even had to sell our huge property (below its true worth) after my back surgery and cancer and my husband's stroke. We moved into a small house in town with just a yard for the dogs. However we picked ourselves up and manage despite not having the money to live as comfortably as we had hoped.

                                                                          ·

Many retirees return to working out of boredom or not being able to survive on the measly pension. I retired any years ago due to emphysema and more recently a lung cancer diagnoses. Since then I had set up a foodbank at my own cost which I ran from home on behalf of my church but they wanted to use it only to help people within our church instead of anyone in need, so I closed it. I then volunteered at another local foodbank for a while. These days I grow fresh vegetables all year round to help people in need through a local charity PLUS I counsel victims of abuse and domestic violence FREE of charge. But hey, this is nothing compared to the great work YOU are doing...Keep up the good work

                                                                                    ·
                                                                                • I have applied to volunteer at a near by Animal Shelter in April and have heard nothing. This is my wish but no one has the decency to even let me know any thing. People are so rude in inconsiderate. At the Salvation Army I assumed they were all volunteers but they are not. Quite a few are employed there. I found it strange to volunteer and do the same tasks as they do and I do it for nothing. So the donated items would actually cover their wages before going to any one needing assistance.

There was a lot less bureaucracy with paper filling out and now life is a breeze. The same as EileenW, many happy hours are spent at U3A plus at the local community house doing courses. Being of a slothful nature I enjoy being able to get up late and go to bed when I want and have spent a disgustingly wonderful amount of time watching Netflix. There have also been lunches with friends along the way and they do tend to complain that I am always so busy that we have to book a fair time in advance.
                                                                                    ·

They keep putting up the retirement age for pensions. One day it will go up to 75, or 80. Who knows! It's good for those who are still fit and healthy. But there are many who can't do all those things, to keep real busy anymore. Some have to slow down due to bone complaints, or something else. Their bodies let them down.

I just coast along.. wish I had of in the past taken life a bit more seriously. You learn the hard way sometimes.
