Have you been caught SCAMMERS?
boy blunder10-Aug-23
I had a friend who recently got scammed buying puppies from unlicensed sellers, he confronted him and managed to get his money back and that was that for him, I didn't get that I wanted to bring him down, so I ask you, you catch someone scamming you or misleading the public do you get your money back with an apology [maybe] or do you pursue them with the law and shut them down, hopefully, maybe get jail time for them

Dont understand why anyone would buy puppies from some internet advertiser - it is on the news not to go through these advertisers - go to the pound and buy a dog who really needs a home. I have had scammers ring and say they are from "Teltra and we need to check your internet speed" I know they are not so string them along - they want you to type in an address into search bar and then they get access to your computer. I told this one I don't believe you are from Telstra as they already know the speed,. Yes I am he says, I say you don't even pronounce the name of the company correctly, I think you are lying. No I'm not he says, yes you are I say, and this went on for some time, then he says I will get my supervisor ok I say. Supervisor gets on and says "so you will not co operate?" I said why would I you are a liar and scammer - then he swore at me and said get ... I rang Telstra who informed me there is a govt website you can register on to stop these calls as they come from computers. I wasn't able to work this out but blow me down they rang again the next day - I went through the same thing and told the other idiot - I had reported them to the authorities. There was a programme on Four Corners outlining how much money they have stolen from peoples accounts. In my opinion when caught they should be hung upside down and left to rot. Unfortunately this won't happen, but they have scared a lot of elderly telling them their phone will be cut off and not sure if they can be stopped. The internet is now being used for criminal activities.

I think it depends on how serious the scam is and what it costs you.

yes I fortunately haven't been caught because I believe if its too good to be true it probably is but these guys maybe start small and get bigger,i am a fairly charitable person and have offered help to people in need in a genuine manor but people often refuse my help because they think i am trying to scam them this is what scammers have done to the world in my eyes

You are so right. And how sad is that? We can't even treat each other with caring and compassion without being looked at distrustfully.

My son was scammed as a teenager, selling his Nike runners on gumtree. A person in Frankston said they were wanting him to send to their cousin overseas but they would pay for the postage etc, , so ok ,,then it all started ! He ended up losing $120 and had a call from an artificial bank in Canada saying yes they had his money to transfer and they were just waiting for the shoes to pass thru customs erm in Nigeria.. sent him off to fill out western union transfer for the same amount again 3 days later as problem at customs, But there was extra money put aside to compensate for his troubles,, and there was the bank calling him again so all was well. Thank goodness he actually asked me to help him fill out that form .l took it up to desk and the woman said where's it going to, Nigeria ? Shook her head at me and said no it's a scam do not send, and we ended up at his bank having to check over everything else! So he'd lost his runners already sent and another $120. We saved ourselves the pain of the rest, I told him ah well there's probably some big fat Nigerian drug lord sitting around,,smoking a cigar right now wearing your Nike runners .. The B###d Not some spotty teenager boy in Australia he thought had bought them. At least he laughed .. Poor kid we didn't have a lot then ,still don't that's why he was selling them in the first place.

Another thing they do is say they will buy and put money into your account. Then they say they have to put for example $500 to pay for $240 item - when you message back it says its because its a business account and there is a limit on how much has to go into it. Someone did this to me when I was selling a bed. I smelled lies and cut the person off. They say account is PayID. I think many people have been scammed like this. When selling anything I usually say cash and pick it up.

Yes that's why cash in person is always going to be king I agree! ,, ,they knew exactly what to say in my son's case and they already had his bank account details by then too. At every turn or when he questioned they had a good answer for him, So scummy and crafty. It was only when we got to the bank ,the teller told him no bank will ever call you unless you have made an appointment with us for something or you've called us and are waiting on a reply. This was 13 yrs ago so we weren't quite so savvy back then ,,but really they did know exactly what to tell him to land us both at the post office filling out that damn form! Scum.

😂 Hilarious! Bet his supervisor was not too happy ! I had a woman once from " Visa" commonwealth telling me someone had tried sending $$ to N.Z from my account .Asked me all sorts of questions and said they would freeze that payment and not to worry as it was for $ 800. Then I knew she was up to something as I didn't have that much in the bank anyway! Went along with the call.... she asked me to repeat a coded number,, l hear the computer recording click in... number starts with CRN ,, now l know THAT is a centrelink ref no. So waited til she'd finished. She asked me to repeat, l said no I won't is there anything else? ,, she got so flummoxed asked again I said no ,, she hung up ! THEN I reported the details all to scamwatch .

It’s not easier to catch them dear. It’s happening in front of so-called scam watchers, Apps promised to protect you, the big search engines assure your protection of privacy and the other big service companies who want their apps to be used to protect us. All of them put out so much of our data on the net, scammers know how to snatch those details and attack us. I don’t believe anyone can protect our privacy anymore, but we have to be vigilant about our safety, and not to get caught to the tricks of these bad guys!

I haven't been scammed but have been a victim of fraud. There wasn't anything I could do because my bank gave me back my money, but I contacted the establishment that had to wear the loss and asked them to report the matter to the police but they said they would let their bank deal with it. I don't understand their point of view. They won't get their money back, they saw the fraudster so it's up to them do get the police involved. You break the law, you get punished.

I think they need to be pursued through the law, if possible. Because they really don't seem to care who they affect. They need to be treated harshly. There are way too many scammers out there and they prey on the vulnerable.

No but i did scam a scammer out of 10,000 dollars. It was an email about them putting money into my account so I gave them the details for a dead one and they put the money in. I then received an email telling me to keep 3,000 then split the rest in half and wire it to two Russian address, i realised it was a laundering racket so I just kept the whole lot and so far nothing has happened to me and that was in 2010.

I recently bought a health item on line. I was double charged but they did refund the second amount when I emailed them. After a few weeks, when the item hadn't arrived, I contacted them and they refunded the full amount but I was down the international fees, etc (about NZ$20). I was ready to chalk that up to experience but a couple days later the item arrived in my mail box!!! I guess you could say that I scammed them!

When he contacted the company because the goods were already over a week overdue his account was billed a 2nd time. He noticed it quickly and contacted his bank who reversed the 2nd entry. The stuff arrived a few days later

Yes I fell for a scam, I felt so stupid because I am usually smarter than that. I did get the bulk of the money back. They double dipped on my card and I had not given permission for the larger amount so the bank got my money back. It's so scary and the company was fake and in the UK. Had a fake web site and every thing. We just have to be so careful and if in doubt say no, hang up or delete the email.

Depends on what the claimed scam actually is. Selling puppies isn't a scam provided you did not promise something that could not be delivered like Pedigree Puppies Registered with the CCC. You can say purebreed and they do not have to be registered witht he CCC or come with papers but they can still be purebred. As for the more common scams those are Cold Calls from places like saying we are from telstra and for the last few weeks we have been getting notifications about your internet connection or something similar. One day I was felling very happy so I agreed to allow them to remote in on a computer and they could not work out why they could only see 1 screen out of the 9 I actually use and why Windows Commands did not work on it let alone why it was asking for the Root Password. When they figured out that they where not dealing with either a Windows or a Rancid Fruit OS they lost all interest and hung up. I generally say however give me your phone number and extension and I'll get one of the security services to ring you back and they hang up. Not what many can honestly say but it is always good for a laugh. However lately I have noticed that they are getting better and no longer saying I'm from "Insert telco Here" but your home internet provider with no business name which makes it easier for people to believe as they do not ask questions and get sucked in. When that happens because they are not in Australia it's all but impossible to do anything and you deserve what you get. Some think that by mentioning several names they will get them in but always those names mentions have nothing to do with each other and when you press them they say they merged yesterday which you just know is an outright lie they may as well say that Labour and the Liberal Parties are the same Political Party and ask for donations.

If they suck people in and get their details, then they will do a lot of damage. I double whether a whistle, no matter how loud over a phone, will result in permanent hearing loss.

Don’t you think that by now enough time and educational events have taken place that if you get scammed now it’s really your own fault? Yes, once scammed it will do a lot of damage, but how does anybody with two peas for brains get scammed in the first place? And I hate to break your heart, but one whistle blower leads to two, which leads to three and so on and so on. Do you really think that you’re the only one who deliberately tries to hurt people? You’re an American Republican, aren’t you?

I am certainly not an American Republican - which, incidentally, would be someone that believes it would your own fault if you got scammed. You or I might be experienced and not fall for it, but plenty of people do, otherwise there wouldn't be as many scamming calls. I have never used a whistle or anything remotely like that, but I don't have too much sympathy for these scammers.

The reason people get scammed is that they are too uncritical. If something appears too good to be true, then it most likely is. Use your common sense, people, and you won't fall for any scam. It is entirely up to you.

Without question, you take ‘em down. Turning a blind eye after getting your own money back is as bad as taking advantage of people in the first place. People are so pathetic when it come to “ getting involved” . No moral compass!

Your friend was very lucky, if you have a Landline make sure you get a phone which displays the number calling and one in which you can record phone numbers of family, friends, doctors etc. - anyone you have regular contact with as you do with your mobile. If someone calls on either Land or Mobile Phone and you don't recognise the number, or on the screen it says Caller Number Withheld or something similar, you can bet it will almost certainly be someone trying to scam you or, at best, trying to sell you something you neither Need nor Want. You can react in one of two ways. You can be fearfully aggressive, as rude or abusive as you like and then simply hang up or you can be Sweet, Charming and Polite and then simply say Thank you for calling, but I am not interested. Then hang up immediately. Under No Circumstances should you allow them to respond. If, as I have done, you get the same number calling you every day, sometimes multiple times per day, then accuse them of Harassment and tell them to remove your number from their list. If they ask you for your number REFUSE to give it to them simply say Well, you called me so you already have it. Then hang up! Being scammed, defrauded, conned can be entirely your own fault. How often do we hear of people complaining that they have been ripped off to the tune of, sometimes, 100s or 1000s of dollars? Well, more fool them! The instant some friend, what a grossly overused word that has become, a friend you have never actually met in person asks you for money then unfriend them. If you give them money you have willingly walked into the trap so don't start complaining and demanding the Government or Bank to compensate you for your own stupidity, greed etc.

Then I provided photos showing what I received in the package they sent and of the item and screen shots of description of what I paid for and of what I should have received. No issues I got my money back. Found them online to give a review and gave them the worst review ever to warn others.

I arrived at her place when she was about to go to the bank. I told her immediately it was a telephone scam and she did not believe me. I then called my brother to ask for the grandson in question to call his grandma right away. He was at the university at the time. He spoke to his grandma and told her it was a scam. The scammer was due to call back within the hour. Turns out my son in law came over to take the call. When he did, he played the game with him for awhile and then yelled out in French to go and get an honest job instead of scamming people. The guy started laughing. Touchee! Tricked again Brer Rabbit. The irony of the story, is that my mother used to work for the police for 30 some years. She always said she could spot a crook a mile away. Well the crook was more than a mile away. He was calling from Quebec to Manitoba.

He got caught easily because the only place I'd used both cards was at a certain Taco Bell. I didn't follow up after I knew he'd been caught and arrested by the police. Once I was looking for chocolate Labrador puppies online. This one site had gorgeous pictures up and when I contacted her, it was obvious in her first email to me that it was a scam when she used the wrong name for the puppy I'd picked. I played with her for a couple of emails back and forth and she was just way too anxious to get her money and didn't care about the household, our experience, other pets in the home; she was awful and I let her know it. I looked for her site a couple of weeks later, looking for the choc. Labs and found the same photos but under a different breeder name and website!! I never got a dog but IF I ever do, it'll be from a local shelter and not off the internet. The only time I fell for a scam was when I was reading something online and up comes this thing saying I'd won a hair blower; just had to pay the $4 US for shipping. I thought 'cool'. When I'd gotten the confirmation email it was a welcome to this online dating website. I was so mad I replied to that email and demanded my money back and told them I'm really angry at the way they'd tricked me. The money was credited back to my card immediately. When this 'you've won a hair dryer' thing came up again later on, I saw in the lower left corner the word (Ad). Dang, I'd fallen for one!! I'm usually so careful:)

I never buy off the internet but myself and another friend have tried to stop her and to some extent we have but every now and then it is like she cannot help herself and goes and buys something new. They are thieves and it should be reported to the police but as they are usually from overseas and change their sites constantly, they are never caught anyway. Best thing is do not buy over the internet. Face to face is always best.
