Losing Our Train of Thought!
APB01-May-24
Railway unions in Europe are carrying out a number of massive strikes they are demanding much higher wages...while the owners of these railways seem to want to layoff people working in ticket booths and others working on platforms (in the UK a recent uprising by train users has stopped them closing them all down)...there is a shortage of drivers...but driverless trains are already operating...and the signalmen will be next...this could be the railway union's last Hurrah....a real turning point in history....robots are always on time...cheaper and do not strike....the last person you will end up seeing when you catch a train will be the guy in the ticket office!

I have never ridden a train before but in my area they are not needed and don't go thru for passengers but I think it would be fun to try one one day

That's terrible I like catching a train and having wonderful conversations with the staff I see all the time when I am catching them. It would be so boring to not have humans to converse with or even just know there is someone there if you need them who will be sympathetic if there is a problem. I doubt if a robot could do that.

I feel more comfortable when there is human interaction. AI has been programmed to sacrifice for the greater good—I.e. better to crash one train than destroy a bridge.

Like you say AI doesn't have to be robots in it self, it can be other parts of the train simply contoling it in how it needs to move. The Robots are the ones that catch it.

AI will fix all the strikes because they will take over and no need to hire people.

We have driverless trains, they are long and thin and you can see the track ahead. I will only travel one way on them because they go underground at my station and when they were new one broke down in a tunnel, no-one knew and the lights went out. It was only when the train didn't arrive at the next station that someone went looking for it. The other thing I don't like about them is that they are in a sealed tunnel so if the train breaks down you can't get out of the carriage. Way back when I caught a steam train to work, and it did break down every now and then and all the passengers would get out and walk to the next station. I don't think I could tolerate sitting in pitch black and not able to get out. So I only go one way then back again.

If no one works, then no one gets paid. If no one gets paid, then no one can afford a train ticket. Just close down the railways now and avoid the ongoing pain and misery.

I don't believe AI is just a UK problem it's happening everywhere in as many industries as possible. It's cheaper in the long run. And hey my local train station hasn't been manned for years.

OH, how I agree with BUGALUS. It's all very well to say that technology is going to do this & that, but it all comes down to having somebody to program the information into the technology first before it can work. Will have to wait & see what will happen but not in my lifetime I'm sad to say or should I say "glad".

Until accidents happen! You can dehumanize the work force but it's still humans that get themselves in trouble - either purposely or stupidly when travelling on trains, buses, anything with wheels!

Here in Canada our national railway has managed to reduce the number of train trips in the country and reduced the numbers of workers that look after the trains and the tracks. What we see is corporate profits rising at a crazy rate and the safety of the trains getting worse at an equal rate. I realize that the question was about commuter trains (the U.K and E.U. have had a far superior system forever) but starting a long time ago our conservative government at the time almost completely destroyed our rail roads in favour of more and more Big Trucks. This is not working out very well for anybody. The truckers aren't happy, the rail roads aren't happy and the people aren't happy and the environmentalists aren't happy. I guess, as long as everybody agrees then it will all work out in the end.

Hi, There is an old saying in Economics, "What happens when everybody who wants one, has one?" Without new participants in the marketplace the whole thing will come to a grinding halt. Our 'competition' model is what is truly to blame.

And the last thing you'll see as that driverless train runs headlong into a fixed object will be the robot who is driving the train and in incapable of doing anything else but what it has been told to do despite the obvious dangers ahead that it knows are there bit has not been programed to avoid. You rely on Computer Logic you die by Computer Logic which is exactly why Robots are unsafe.

And the ticket office will soon disappear too as all tickets will be sold from vending machines. Personally i think all this Automation is extremely dangerous. Job Losses will be in the Hundreds of Millions Mental Health problems will soar beyond anything we experience today. Drug Addictions will massively increase and most of it will be from Legal prescription Drugs. Suicide? As the old saying goes: You ani't seen Nothing yet, Boys and Girls they will be in the millions. Crime will escalate beyond anything we have experienced so far. What will the Politiciand do then? What will they say when someone outside the country hacks into the Computer Systems running all those trains, Buses, Tram, LRVs and causes them all to either stop suddenly or, possibly worse refuses to allow then to do so, makes them speed up and the resulting crash will see literally 1000s killed and/or maimed for Life? The Politicians, and I don't care which side of the political fence they sit on or straddle, are current;y lauding this so-called Progress. They simply don't care. thery think their grossly over-paid, under-worked jobs are Safe for Life. the fact that possibly Billions of people around the world will be throen out of work or will never, ever be able to get any sort of job. Conspiracy Theory? Maybe BUT ask yourselves this: What will all those people thrown out of work, with no prospect of ever getting work again actually do?

Yes! But human workers make more demands, sometimes it’s unbearable the disruption and expenses to replace these strikers and providing a service to the commuters. Think about how much your personal life is affected due to these strike actions on transport? Enough is enough, there should be over the table negotiations more than stopping work and walking out to shout about their demands! Robots is a good alternative if the human are not disciplined and value their positions. Also, should appreciate our time and money wasted due to disruption to transport!

Should really be free for school children and accompanying adults, that would make a great difference to the family budget as well .. take it from the coffers the government digs deep in and gives plenty away so foreign countries can buy weapons to kill each other.

Advances in switching automation, scheduling, autonomous operations will also come at a human cost, especially if external human factors can be eliminated - people / vehicle track crossing. Only place you might have people is in face-to-face services - such as food or maintenance. People have to decide what they want - cheaper service, higher return on investment, or human involvement (at what cost / level of service).
