Discussion of the Day
How hard is it to stay slim?
Pet10-May-22
I have constantly been on diets, I lose my weight, and it slowly creeps back on - what is the secret is there any diet out there that actually makes you happy and keeps your weight off and motivated?

  • drinking water does it, but cut down the food... use smaller plates for dinner.

    • A balance of protein and GOOD carbohydrates. Check on Google. Dietician gave me a similar list. Bad carbohydrates give you a very quick boost of energy then you actually lose energy and feel tired. Starchy foods such as potato also contain sugar. Some other vegetables actually contain natural sugars. Artificial sweeteners can cause severe kidney damage. One of the worst is in diet colas of any brand. They have aspartane (950, 951) in them. Stevia is not recommended by Diabetes SA

      • From a British standup routine by Simon Evans...."losing weight is fairly easy...eat less, exercise, drink lots of water....of course that only applies to men...with women it appears to be their genes or hormones that are the problem, that sort of thing...and their bone structure too apparently"

        • Seeing a nutritionist is a good idea as they are trained esp for this. Can tailor an individual diet based on ones own needs.

          • I have the other problem and find I cannot put on weight or at least keep it on. I exercise to stay bulked up so I do feel sorry for all of us trying one thing or the other.

            • I am not very tall so if I gain weight the kilos seem to show more. My weight goes up and down but since Covid-19 I have exercised more (mostly walking) and am happy where I am. Have altered all my clothes as an incentive not to put any extra kilos on again. Can't afford new clothes so there is no going back.

              • You have to come up with something you can live with the rest of your life. If it seems impossible to stick to it probably is! I've found if I start out simple -- say with deleting 1 item from my diet and then gradually deleting more -- it works better than going all out and living on lettuce alone!

                • drinking warm water with a slice of lemon 30 minutes before a meal reduces your appetite & amount you want to eat. I've been doing this for many years & have maintained reasonably stable weight

                  • When Covid-19 restrictions came in Victoria, you were only permitted to exercise for one hour daily & limited to 5 kms I started riding my bike in the local streets within a few months my weight dropped from 83 kg to 71 kg which I’ve managed to keep,I feel fitter hit the golf ball further I have no regrets except I had get a new clothing pants reduced from 36 to 30 the secret is to maintain exercise regularly

                    • It was never a problem for me. At the age of 55 I stood 170 cm and weighed 55 kilo's, but then I had to have my thyroid removed. Now I only have to look at food and I gain weight. It became quite frightening recently as I just kept gaining weight no matter what I did or didn't eat but after my last thyroid test my meds were adjusted and now my weight has at least stabilized so I can start thinking how best to lose some weight. I had been on The Dukan diet which was great but even that wasn't working. Weight really is a problem as you age. Someone should come up with a magic pill. Don't worry about going into space, find a diet pill that works and is safe.

                      • Its so hard at my age of 69. I walk 45 minutes a day, eat minimal and as soon as I have some treats, back goes on the weight.

                        • Know the feeling. I'm sure every spare kilo flying around out in space is just waiting for me to sit down before it jumps onto my hips.

                        • It's easy if you've been doing it for a while, not so easy when just starting off. I used to count calories which was 100% effective for losing the weight. After losing weight I think maintenance is actually more tricky. At times it was just as tricky to healthily keep the weight on as it is to keep it off. What I've found most useful to keep slim is the following - Firstly: eat only when hungry - don't mindlessly eat. I often skip breakfast and sometimes lunch because I'm not hungry but I often have a large dinner because I'm usually pretty hungry by then. Don't listen to all that rubbish they say about how you have to eat 3 meals a day and snacks in between to keep your "metabolism up" because you simply do not need to do that. It's perfectly healthy to skip meals and in fact can be healthy because it helps you become more glucose sensitive (opposite of diabetes). As long as you aren't becoming deficient in anything then no worries. Listen to your gut and be in tune with true hunger signals. Secondly: I've never had to diet ever again since committing to eating more unprocessed foods. Cook with whole ingredients and eat more fruit, veg, pulses, legumes, nuts and seeds, meats. Just think how far from nature is the food you are eating? Lastly: get adequate sleep - this has a massive impact on your hunger levels. I tend to be more hungry if I don't get enough sleep so I make sure there is always 8 hour allocated for sleep. What do I know about weight loss? I lost 60 kilograms and have kept it off successfully for many years now. So there ya go, take it or leave it.

                          • I generally eat only 1 meal a day but I do not get enough calories and I do not recommend it for brain health. I do think intermittent fasting is a good idea.

Having one meal a day is a form of intermittent fasting which is good for brain health. However I've tried intermittent fasting and found it difficult long term. Rather found it better to just eat when properly hungry which turned out similar anyway but was more in tune with what my body needed. It can be difficult to eat enough calories but if you eat when you're truly hungry as opposed to eating to a structured schedule, maintenance is much easier to attain. Especially if you're eating quality/less processed foods and not shying away from any particular whole foods like high fat (nuts, avocado, salmon) or carb (dates, potato) etc. This way you get a bit of everything and you're body gets the fuel it needs to run efficiently. The key is to eat less processed foods which naturally have more fibre, vitamins and minerals meaning you're body gets what it needs so less cravings due to deficiencies.

                                            • There are many reasons why you can’t lose weight and keep it off. My GP and I often have this discussion. He says that women have a hard deal as they get older when it comes to weight management. You need to eat healthy food from all food groups and also manage the amount of energy going in with the amount of energy going out. You need to do exercise which builds muscle (you need to eat protein to help build muscles) as muscle uses up more energy than fat. You should also avoid empty calories. These are calories in foods which provide minimal nutritional value. These are often the things we crave like chocolate biscuits and alcohol.

My whole family were diabetic and in my sixties I turned my back on all those luscious dishes and went plain. By plain I mean mainly vegetable and under 100g meat, mainly chicken, lamb chop and small steak once or twice a week. My only sugar indulgence is a sugar in my coffee, only 2 cups per day and 1 piece of dark chocolate at night, not every night. Not glamorous but I've stayed within 500gm for the last 20 odd years. I eat to stay alive not to gormandize. It's totally boring but the rest of my family of 4 are all gone and I was the first kid. I agree totally with Lyn. Food is not the be-all-end-all of life. For exercise I just walk an hour or more a day.

Don't make it the 'be all' of your life

                                                              • Exercise is the key I think. Fill up with heaps of water. It is hard though. I did learn some great tips from The New Glucose Revolution particularly that vinegar is the magic ingredient. This includes pickles and mustard or chutney because it slows down digestion and you get less hungry. Avocados being a good fat has a filling effect as well.
                                                                ·
                                                                • As they say a second on your lips a year on your hips eat less calories do not snack on rubbish and do not drink any booze. As for weight gain the experts say that is all to do with Genetics so if your parent was heavy then you most likely will be as well. However what I have noticed was when on the farm where we killed our own meat and grew most of the vegies and any beer that was drunk was put into a stream to cool down which didn't cool it that much and Ice for the Ice Box was 300 KMS away so that was not an option very few people got overweight they all stayed relatively slim and healthier I would hazard a guess that the current generations of food that is made for easy consumption isn't doing you or anyone else all that much good. Try finding any premade foodstuff without sugar in it and then understand why the made food is bad for you.
                                                                  ·

                                                                    ·
                                                                    • Yes it is very hard! I am on pre diabetic medication and the weight is slowly coming off. The medication makes me feel like I am not hungry and I eat less, hence the weight starts to come off. I am not a fan of exercise, but I'm sure if I had a regular regime the weight would come off quicker. An endocrinologist has been great to help me with this.
                                                                      ·

Just eat the right foods and don't eat until you are so full that you can't move. Just eat enough that you are no longer hungry. Exercise is also key. Even if diet is good you need to move.

I'm sort of the opposite, I exercise every day don't eat any junk food but I've been overweight almost my whole life. My weight has crept up the last 6 months or so and normally it really bothers me but now it doesn't really bother me for some reason.

That's because as you complete the diet, get to the weight required you go back to your normal eating habits and weight goes back on. If you eat smaller portions, eat lots of vegetables and small portions of meat. If you feel hungry between meals drink water. Since retiring and not using as much energy as I did when I worked I only eat two meals a day. I find that's sufficient for me, I have breakfast and an early dinner. I do my exercises each morning, stretching and yoga. I have kept my weight down. However, I do on occasions have treats I find if you don't have them everyday they make no difference to your weight.

I always was very tiny but hit 50 and slowly the weight went on. I cannot get it off and I eat very little but I had my thyroid removed when I was 21 and now with age etc. nothing moves the weight. I just give up and go with the flow as stressing about it will cause other health problems. Just am what I am and don't look in the mirror too often these days. I never dieted but did eat well and still do. I do not have biscuits, cakes, very little bread etc. basically eat chicken and vegetables and fresh fruit and not large meals. I never have sugar or sugar drinks. I drink a low fat milk and have since I was a teen for health reasons. Not much I can cut out. It is what it is as I said.

If you keep eating the wrong foods then what do you expect? Eat them in small amounts otherwise the weight will come back again. Being on yo, yo, diets makes it worse.
