My working life revolved around figures and numbers. It started with pounds, shillings and pence and an adding machine, then it was decimal currency and a computer. Things moved faster and faster and by the time I gave up work my computer did everything and was even a word processor. However, I still needed to use my brain to calculate ratios and % but quantum computing is way over my head. I can stand at the checkout and calculate how much my groceries will cost while the person manning the checkout wouldn't have a clue about adding or subtracting, which is pretty disgraceful, but quantum computing won't help them.

I've heard so many people babbling on about how exicted they are about Quantum computers and how fast they are. It seems they still can't interpret the limitation is still there is about how fast a human brain can read and type a question or recieve an answer. It supposably means figuring out a cure to a disease that took ten years with current computer. to figuring it out in just 2 hours. you have some pretty good old computers there man. The one I used to gradually upgrade and dissaseble bit by bit, had 640 KB of RAM, and after having it for a year it had a 40 MB hard disk in it. before that no HD. just 1.44 MB diskettes. I was better off than using 720 KB floppy disks. So now if Neo gets it's hands on Quantum computers, things will really get out of hand. Edited 28-Apr-25 19:51pm

My first computer was to have a 20 mb hard drive, I upgraded it to 40 mb before purchase, everyone wanted to know why I wanted such a big hard drive. Go Figure?

I hav no idea of all this stupid jargon that Computer Companies and IT people have invented just to keep their jobs . It is also the best way to get rid of the old folk like me. I am happy when the internet goes down as I still know how to add 1 and 1 together and how much change I get if I use cash not card at a supermarket. The government doesnt want the old people around as they know too much from the "olden days" so put them in the aged homes where they can stagnate with no need for computers. Fortunately I am not interested in all this cloak and dagger age so long as I can open my Amazon Kindle Account and my Rewardia Account and certain easy apps I dont give a hoot for Quantum computing. I had to look it up to find out what is was and the definition is equally as ridiculous as everything to do with programming. 'Utilizes quantum mechanical phenomena like superposition and entanglement to perform computations' I never swear but "What the f....are they talking about".

People always want the latest so it is a good selling ploy. I have windows 10 on it (not by me but previous owner) but it is needing an update now as Microsoft is giving mine the heave ho. I just need search engine, email, and blank page to write things on etc. Very basic. Now I have to go and find a new PC and figure out how it all works but like the phones I don't need everything. Drives me batty.

The thing is they bring out these new computers and systems but have to update every 2 weeks with security and whatever. Why not get it right the first time. BTW i'm still on windows 7 and toshiba laptop😁

Don't even know what the term means. As APB says, outside of work, most private people do very little on their machines so why do they need ever faster, more complex systems? These Super High Speeds may be needed by the Medical and Scientific sectors but certainly not general members of the Public. Like everything today it is all about making Money to serve the World's Current Most Popular Deity whose name is GREED. the bigger, the faster the More Expensive it all becomes.

More memory space means I can keep more games and movies on my computer. I dont trust cloud storage to be there for me in 10 years time and I am not impressed by Netflix etc who keep updating their libraries and delete movies I want to go back to every now and then

I don't understand. What is wrong with making computers capable of doing better? 2 gig hard drives lol? I downloaded 10+ GB onto a SDD just last night without even having to consider how much disk space I had left. In the past I have downloaded video games that have been 80+ GB in size. We can now use complex audio or video editing programs and deliver professional results from home. Using the same computer I used 20 years ago would be very limiting in comparison.

Don't have a computer. My youngest is now at Uni and looking for a new one. He is a gamer as well so for him he has specific needs as per yhe way of downloading speed and storage. I guess that for the average person now most things are done online,their is also apps for everything and emails to go with it. Then you have social media, streaming. So many products,and ways to interact that would have never been thought of . For myself all my notifications, bills ,receipts communications go through my phone as well as subscriptions and of course Rewardia. When you think about it it is alot to manage. Even my warranty and user manuals are all downloaded. Seems to be alot of info to be stored,or operating simultaneously.

With all the ads it is now not worthwhile

I gave my computer to charity. My reason? Years & years working with keyboards from manual to computerisation was more than enough for me

I bought mine rebuilt for $80, and it works fine! It has Firefox, Chrome and Edge browsers installed. It's a Dell cabinet with Linux Mint. Who needs Windows anymore? ;-D

I'm not sure what or if anything is going on. All I know about Quantum is there was a Series called "Quantum Leap" and the main charactr was a very handsome guy and the ladies did quantum him a lot ... sorry, now going back to la la land and dreaming on. When you start talking about everything a computer can do, I start feeling a bit overwhelmed. I certainly would not class myself as computer tech savvy.

I am truly amazed by the mind-blowing things that computers are capable of these days. The CGI stuff is incredible! Personally, I am perfectly content using my computer to keep in touch with my family and friends, take surveys, play games, earn rewards that I can use to shop online, look up information, etc. I can barely keep up with all the TLAs( 3 letter acronyms ), but I am ok with that. I leave all the techno-geek stuff to my resident computer wizard, husband, the guy who fixes my laptop when I mess up.

That is way to complicated for me to comprehend. All I do on my computer is send emails, if I am looking for something in particular I will google it and the rest of the time it is spent on Rewardia.

It's probably the gaming industry that's driving the need for processing capabilities. As characters and scenes become more lifelike, graphics cards and so then processors need to be able to accommodate more. Not everyone plays games but a lot of people do and it is a massive industry now.

the power of quantum computing is not for everyday use but rather for solving problems needing industrial scale computational capability. Things like meteorology or encryption.

Quantum computing is coming to your place of residency - soon (however, quantum computing has been in the business world and the scientific world for a while). TRANSLATION, if you have entrepreneur skills and you are computer savvy - then you can operate a business (on your personal (home) computer) more cost efficient - DRASTICALY. In addition, you can operate more than one business on a personal (home) quantum computer with the same cost efficient which will increase your profit margins on all of your online businesses on your personal (home) computer. Friends and I once pinpointed faults in outback rail tracks using a 286 computer on a NASA satellite before GPS was a thing LOL They make computers bigger and faster these days to cope with all the damn softeware updates and crap they make you SUBSCRIBE to...I miss the old operating systems and office that I owned and the movie maker. I still save my files as Office 2007 because I don't trust the new crap NOT to change my computer settings. It's all blackmail to buy more...you have to buy new devices as well because the new software wont run them...its all bullshit and greed.
