Trendy Magazine Articles

When did publishers think that magazines should have articles printed on coloured backgrounds? These last few years it's been rife. Perhaps they're in cohorts with opticians because its practically impossible to read and may be causing eye problems - dark brown background printed with black writing or pink pages printed with yellow writing. It may look pretty and 'now', but if you can't read it, what's the point of publishing it. Do others have this problem?

I don't know about magazines but I have serious problems reading the instructions on packets written in yellow on a white background. Sometimes I can't even manage with a magnifying glass. What was wrong with black printing on a white background? It has worked well for thousand of years.

My aunt gifted me Woman's Day, and mostly I just look at the pictures, then leave it in the Post Office so someone else can make better use of it. Don't have the heart to tell my aunt I don't read them. Mostly about food!

I don't see this is a big issue, because magazines should be colourful and the men and women often are chick and elegant. Everyone wants to see beautiful young, trendy and stylish photos. Yes, someone may suggest to the editors to consider changing background colours to lighter. If that is going to be a huge issue for majority of readers, they will consider changing colours, if not leave it alone and enjoy what you can!🙂

I find the same thing on some surveys where they have faint words on white background. Black and white is best. Even some pages in the paper are the same.

No problem. As long as the chicks are good to look at, I couldn't give a rat's about the colour of the background. Taylor Swift looks good against any background. Call me a chauvinist if you like, but I know what I like to look at.

They are obviously trying to balance the "scales" and catering to those who cannot read and just buy them for the "PICTURES" not the "ARTICLES". As for those who posses the afore mentioned skill, they like to digest everything in black and white and do their own colour conversion by visualising it in the privacy of their "brain cells". or words to that affect!!!???

For me the answer is not to buy mags at all. They are just full of misleading ideas that make women and men feel " less than". They regurgitate the same ideas over and over and get rich off your hard earned dollar. I'm more than confident in my fellow woman to know what's fashionably correct for her. Or to use the internet to look up content that's the same for free.

Yep. Silly colour choices or worse complex images behind the text. Fonts that are simply too fancy / stylised is another lesser problem, Some of it is trendy, arty-farty silliness for the sake of it done by people with no sense (similar to the rubbish you see on a fashion catwalk tat is simply unwearable by any sane person). Sometimes it is caused by a newbie graphic designer who hasn't fully understood that that what comes on on the paper can often be very different to what is seen on-screen or ebook / PDF. The very basic graphic design rule should be that text (especially small text) should *always* be a high contrast dark colour on a light background, or vice versa ... or at the very least the letters should have a high contrast border around each letter to make it better stand out.

Magazines are not necessary or essential (unlike other things we consume that would get sales any way because we have other ways of finding out what we need to know about a product aside from its packaging).

It's like anyone coming up with a dumb idea is proving his/her value to the company and earning their pay. For example, who decided to put the seafood dept. next to bakery? Mmweh. I've seen these magazine pages and refuse to buy them. I'd much rather read about things that I actually care about and/or affect the lives of those I love. Any time spent reading junk - or not being able to read junk you just bought - is wasted money and time.

They are not thinking about the readers. They just want to get their ideas out and maybe perhaps get a raise or even a promotion. Maybe going out on the street first and asking people what they think? Just a thought! I hope the young people don’t get sucked into other peoples’ lives by spending their money on these magazines.
