Discussion of the Day
Is romance dead?
Kirsty14-Feb-23
Do you think Valentine's Day is a day for romantic gestures, or only there for businesses to profit from?
Comments
  • Romance has definitely snuffed it. And died holding hands with chivalry.

    • It is there for whatever YOU want it to be - my husband and I (he's 81, and I'm 76) love to get romantic cards, candy, and wine for each other (then he falls asleep right after dinner & I stay up and play games, etc., on this website!).

    • Love should be shown 365 days/24 hours , not just one day,
      ·
      • No - I do not think romance is DEAD - however I do think that Valentine's Day is totally overrated and has turned into a "profit" thing. TRUE ROMANCE is not just one day of the year.

        • Yes. romance is dead.
          ·
          • Profit

            • My best valentines present came from my son at 6yrs old who rode his bike around to our local milkbar.. ( 2minutes up the rd) ..along with his invisible buddy Justin and his 3 invisible dogs ( a Labrador a border collie and a jack russel) for protection . And proudly brought me home a lovely valentines card and picked some flowers from our front patch. I was gutted the following year when he'd figured out he really oughta give that to a girlfriend.. but at that stage he insisted that he Hated girls and was sick of them looking at him ! Lol
              ·
              • Oh dear - I love your story though. My son was a bit the same - until he met the girlfriend.

                              • Romance is not dead ,however business does promote Valentines day purely to make money.A kiss & a hug is enough & I have 60 married years behind me

                                • It should be valentines day everyday. we should always appreciate and express our love for the people in our lives

                                    • Why do you need a special day to buy someone flowers, chocolates, take them out to dinner or tell them you love them? I don't understand it.

                                        • I agree with you. Why not use silk ones that last a long time and keep reminding us to say "I love you"

                                      • I don't think we have chivalrous gentlemen anymore, or they have been put off by these women who don't have the slight bit of feminine wiles. I was married to a pig who was incapable of even uttering a kind word or compliment. I did have a young man who gave me his seat at a funeral and another older gent who opened a door for me. I was very grateful and thanked them. and yes it is too over commercialized. You don't need to spend a bomb or be ostentatious to tell someone you love them.

                                        • My husband used to buy me weird things. A book on good house keeping, an iron, but I did rate a botte of Charlie after our 3rd child was born, possibly because he wasn't around when the other 2 were born. If he were to buy me something now I'd wonder what he was up to. It would be very unusual indeed.

Well Mary as I keep telling young women who feel they are equal or the same as men, men and women are different and instead of trying to be the same or "equal" they should relax and enjoy the difference, especially if it's a man who buys you something that you can enjoy, that isn't required around the house or can be used by other family members. One of my sons wanted to buy me something and gave me a rabbit. I loved it but it did ruin shoes, books and furniture, but she was all mine until she fell in love with the Chinchilla cat. I felt it was a thoughtful gift.

                                        • Even my 10 year old son worked out these invented celebratory days now for profit. A romantic gesture should be off the hook spontaneous or for no reason at all set date makes you do this is not romantic.

                                            • As I understand it...valentine's day was a chance for the timid and unsure to secretly let someone else know that there was someone out there who worshiped them from afar....who was madly in love with them...we got homemade valentine cards when I was at school....it was exciting...wonderful....maybe sometimes they found each other and it all worked out...and that is really beautiful and humanity at its best...now you are expected to buy things for someone who already is established as your valentine...it serves no purpose at all...and is just another crass example of capitalism destroying something that was once fairly magical......

Now I feel it is worth taking time out of our hectic lives and spoiling the one you love for another day of the year. There are birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions, but why stop there.
                                                                          ·

You don't have to buy anything but it kind of serves as a good excuse for especially new romantic interests to bond and have fun. The problem is the expectations that may be set right there. It's up to individuals to discuss that between themselves. I don't really take issue with any of it. Our world is full of greedy practices almost everywhere you look regardless, unfortunately.
                                                                            ·

                                                                            ·

Might be romantic. Still on a whole it is all for bussiness, I suppose it is always monitored year by year in what is does in the GDP. well according to it being more ignored, shouldn't valentines day be making the GDP drop each year then. ?

Just commercial clap trap. Same as the con of people believing you HAVE to buy a diamond ring and have a massively expensive wedding to prove your love for someone. If my husband bought me flowers I'd be asking him what he'd done! Romance is my hubby coming in from the garden with a bunch of flowers he picked for me.

We have used that a few times and my birthday is next month so it's for both. Still pretty and my charm bracelet is filling up. I got a puppy, a dolphin and white daisy charm. Yes, it is good way for a business to profit from romance. Every business is out to try and get your dollar. It really is for thoughs who still have that romantic spark in them. When it ends badly, then you separate or have a divorce. Romance is then dead. Do you really want to start all over with another person or is it just better to stay single.

Strong couples express their love in all kinds of ways everyday. Men shouldn’t be guilted into specific and expensive ways to do so

PURE SEX is still alive (we exist on a planet - with over 7 billion people and counting - at some point - population controls are going to HAVE to put in place by every government on the planet). I don't think celebrating Valentine's Day is a romantic gesture. This is capitalistic control planet - Valentine's Day is strictly about profits (aka GETTING YOUR HANDS ON THE MONEY IN ANY ETHICAL/UNETHICAL MANNER YOU CAN - LMAO).

The day started out for young men and women to send a card anonymously to the one they had feelings for. It was exciting to look around at those around you and wonder who sent the card. Now everybody sends card with their names on, no wondering and getting excited. Just getting upset if you don't get cards and flowers from the one you love. The romance has gone and that's a crying shame.

Separate the fake from the real! Sharing a poem I wrote Saturday 7th July 2001 (2:00 am). Thought it might be suitable for Valentines Day. "Undying Love"Are you mineThis love divineOr just in imagination do you liveAnd who has the power this love to give Who the right this love to takeThis love to nurture or forsakeLove, such a simple wordNot enough said or heard As silently it flowsNo sound it makes, just flowsHot and cold are not its characteristicsBut always warm feelings And whose cold heart could it not meltAfter its strength and warmth they've feltWe search for love tils it finds usAnd in searching we find it binds us Its threads go deepAs into a peaceful sleepWhere silent they flowAnd from their own warmth they glow In our old age its embers stillKeep us warm, when we recall the thrill

Nothing interesting in men, nothing interesting in women. Just equal in all respects and do not care about each other. Just for retailer profits now.
