Does winning the lottery really change your life for the better? Do you know anyone who did win a big won? What was the biggest win you've had so far?

                • Some years ago a British newspaper did a feature on winners of big lotteries there repoeted that the majority significantly and immediately 'improved' their lifestyles, It seemed that most 'satisfied' their perceived and anticipated needs, unfortunately they mostly ended up broke and worse off than they were before their big wins.

                  • No its do not make happy. Money can't buy happiness.

                    • It can help! It won't make every problem go away.

                  • Depends - would share it with family and support some of the charities that have to depend on public support. My biggest win was $82.40 think it has cost me thousands to get it though. LOL

                    • IF I won I would keep it a secret - 1. Because you suddenly gain more friends (that would be so annoying) 2. Because I would like to help some people without getting recognition, its just nice to do some good

                            • Win small...spend it all on yourself. Win big...put it into super or investments.

                              • I think how you handle a big win comes down to ones personality. Some just want to have fun with the money...and don't think about putting much away for a rainy day... whereas ..others are more practical and take care of their needs first. If you go splashing it out on cars...holidays, and fancy restaurants, casino, etc..and the hangers-- on...it won't take long before....you are dead broke. Depends on how much you win. Some people are better off never winning. I always get enjoyment out of reading of a big win by the battlers...who need it the most. One man lost his job last year due to Covid...and he was struggling...then he won around a million. That's a good news story for sure!

                                • Don't know anyone that has won and I've never won anything above $20, rarley do I bother buying a ticket anymore.
                                  ·
                                  • $995 but it was many years ago. When I was checking my ticket the sales person said "You've won nine ninety five" I thought she means $9,95! I gave her $50. If I won one of those huge multi-million dollar ones on my own I would keep one million, see my family (have no children) each got a reasonable house then the rest would go into a Philantrophic Account to help small people and small charities - the latter who would not be spending 93 cents in every dollar on so-called "administration costs". The money would be invested and the income divided a bit like this: 2/3rds Reinvested for the first 15 years with the other 1/3rd distributed, Gradually as the capital grew the amount distributed would be increased. I don't need, nor do I actually want, all those tens of millions so I would try to do some good with it.

                                      • I know someone who won big and it changed their life for the better. He's a smart man and a good person so I'm not surprised he was wise with his earnings.

                                        • I came by an easy $85 a few years back and thought this might be my big chance for a big win if ploughed it all into the $5 lottery which came up trumps when I researched the highest chance of winning. I did win three prizes - $10 and two free tickets. What I lesson I learned from that experiment.

                                              • It all depends on the induvial and how well they manage money. If they start giving it away to fiends and family then no it only makes their lives worse but if they are not the type to boast about the win and spend it wisely or invest the same way and only take the interest then yes it can make your life considerably better. But then it all depends on the person in question and what they want from life.

                                                • My Grandpa won once and at the time it was a bit of money, he ended up buying a block of land on an island which when the tide was up the block of land was under water. Sadly to say he lost some or most of the money. Me, I know you have to be in it to win it and we have occasionally have had a flutter but we prefer to hang on to our money as it is hard to get these days. Never met any one won a big won though. A friend of my Dad's his wife won and she left him and took all the money for herself and went to live with the daughter. He's sad and broke but a lovely nice old guy. Money certainly does change people at times.

You got your tickets plus an extra ticket with the word lotto printed on it so you circled one of the letters and we won a trip to Oahu and Maui flying business class with all expenses paid for plus $10,000 spending money.

I know one person who won a large amount, she thought her own crap didn't smell. I'm the luckiest woman anyway, three grown kids and two beautiful grandkids. Survived breast cancer.

She bought a nice house, car and put some away for her future. The problem was her family thought she should give them most of it and weren't happy with what she gave them.

Only one person is really happy and has had a wonderful life since winning. The other two don't have much left of the winnings and rue the day they won. The person who is still happy and having a good time never told a soul they had won so didn't get any hangers on and new friends. I only know she had won because it was my job to check her coupon. No she didn't give me any and I didn't expect any. I think it depends on you if you win and how you progress with your life.
                                                                          ·

Less than a year later he was suddenly diagnosed with fast growing cancer and shortly after passed away. He had bought himself a modest house with his money but I don't know what else he had done with it. It made me think how life is so random and we really need to grab every opportunity that comes along, get off our screens and fill our lives with fun experiences. Money affects all people differently. Large amounts of it will change some people for the better and some for the worse. Others will just trundle along as always. The most I have won were flights to Sydney and a few nights there in a really fancy hotel. It was a great trip. I would never have done that if I had just won money to the same value. I would have put it in a long term deposit in the bank and sat on it 'for a rainy day'. At the time, it was better me winning an experience that took me out of my comfort zone, than money. Years later, if I won that again, I would definitely prefer the money as I need a new car and with COVID around, I am not game to travel anywhere.
                                                                                    ·

                                                                                      ·

When I've HAD, note the past tense, money that's come in from an unexpected source, I've suddenly become everybody's go to "bank" for loans and donations to charitable causes. In the end the money I've received has become like a poison apple and destroyed close and previously loving relationships. I've even heard on crime channels of people who were taken for every cent they possessed and what that last penny was squeezed out of them they were murdered. If I EVER come into substantial funds again, which is very likely to happen, I'm telling no one and literally taking the money and running away where no one will find me! I MAY choose to enlighten my family once I've done all I want to with it and locked it away. Thanks for reading this. I'm sure I'm not the ONLY one with such troubles.

They become someone else, perhaps their status has lifted up a notch. well good luck to him . Yes I used to work with this man, who won big. This was 20 years ago. I used to give him a ride to work everyday in my old 1985 ford cortina Left his job, lost his wife, now after the divorce settlement, lost almost everything. Living in the flat paying high rent.and struggle to make ends meat. Now every fortnight I dropoff food parcel to him from our church Things have gone full circle

One man who won bought a Harley Davidson and had an accident which killed him less than three months later. We have played for years and the nearest we came to a big would have been a second division using the numbers we always used but unfortunately we broke down miles from home and didn't get to the newsagent in time. That was before we could do it automatically online.

I read a lot about people who have millions but it has not made them happy. Instead they die early in life. One would think they can do all the things they could not afford to do or buy. I have heard people end up spending it all or getting themselves in more debt. One family lost a son tragically after trying to remove furniture themselves and placing him at the back of a ute not strapped in. Sometimes it can cause rifts within the family. There are people who are just happy living a simple life like my aunts overseas once did still bringing water up from the well. They lived a ripe old age.

I think the most I've ever won in lotteries/ lotto was about $50. A big win would definitely change my life for the better and that of my daughters. I would retire instantly, fix up my house, set up daughters, travel, help other family & probably donate to some selected charaties.

Then one week I was broke and DID NOT buy any tattslotto and THAT was the week my 6 numbers were drawn. This told me that I was never meant to win tattslotto. I've heard of numerous people who have won first prize more than once, some of who kept working afterwards. I've heard of numerous people whose lives were destroyed as the result of winning millions of $s from lotteries. Give me enough money to survive, pay all my bills, buy food, pay for medical treatments and medications and a bit of money for entertainment, maybe a bit for travelling and I would be happy. Why be rich when you cannot spend it all in a lifetime and people are starving. Look at big corporations, they already have enough money for their family to live the rich life for many generations into the future without needing to earn another dollar, BUT YET the more money they make, the more money they want, so prices of goods and services continuously go up and up and up, making the rich richer and the poor poorer. ALL of these big corporations could easily afford to put at least 20% of their yearly profit aside to do things like help the poor with groceries, provide cheaper housing, set up a fund to help cover the costs of medical treatment and vet bills for people who cannot afford it, plus so much more to improve the standard of living for everyone. INSTEAD they even avoid paying their fir share of taxes

My mum's friend won $8 million about 15 years ago and gave it all to her 3 daughters and now they all have mortgage free homes and go on holidays while she is left at home looking after the house. She still buys a ticket every week and says if she wins again she is not giving a single dollar to any of her children or grandchildren. I guess it's what you do with it and how smart you are with it is what really matters and makes all the difference. You can either blow it all up or invest it wisely to enjoy it everyday.

Whether for the better depends. You could have no worries about money, could afford a house or a better house, a nice car, have a nice holiday and maybe give up work. Of course depending on how much one wins. I have a family member who won the lotto here in the early days so not in the Millions but a bit over $100,000 which at the time was a good leg up for him as he was only about 21. Me, I have won $1000 years ago which paid a couple of bills at the time. I have not bought a ticket for over 12 months though. If I did win big I would pay my mortgage and upgrade my home, car etc. Help my children out and go on a lovely holiday first class. Yes if I win it will have to be $millions. One can always dream.

She said she won't retire because she still likes her job. She works in the medical system.

If you win millions then you need to keep your head screwed on tightly! I don't think it would change me as a person if I ever did win big. It might change others around me tho. You need to be careful and plan what you are going to do with it. Don't waste it.... because you will most likely never get that lucky again. Invest most of it and set up a trust fund if you have a family.
