Spare button
roger b 16765403-Sep-24
Recently I bought a shirt. As usual, there was a spare button attached. It had me wondering, in this day and age, how many people still would use this feature. Is it mandated? Would it be better to not include this feature and pass on the savings, seeing that the percentage would be quite low.

I think it is a good idea to have the extra button. Some times the original buttons are not sewn on properly and can fall off quite easily and it is nice to have to extra to use in this case

It's a good thing to have, because you could lose one of the buttons

I like the spare button. I've used a few on the items they came on and I keep any extras in my sewing basket. Many of them have come in handy when I've only needed one button and not had to buy a card of 4 or 6 or whatever.

I don't think leaving it off would lower the costs at all as most buttons only cost a few cents to the manufacturer. I have used a few of them in my time. They may have started this when we used to have wringer washing machines because I have had a few buttons destroyed by a wringer when I was growing up.

Recently had to use the spare button that came with a cardigan to replace one that fell off somewhere at work. Like having a spare with garments as otherwise it’s a trip to Spotlight to buy a whole new set buttons. When I knit or sew a garment myself I always buy an extra button so I will have spare.

this spare button system has been used for years, if these buttons did not come with every garment that has buttons, and you loose one than you will be left with a shirt that you can't wear because its missing a button, and you will have to either by a new shirt, or try and find a place that still sell buttons and if you are lucky you will find one that matches, so yes I do like the idea of a spare button, what I do when I take the spare button of put it in my sowing basket until its required, One extra button does not cost much but a new shirt will cost big money

Have you tried replacing a button lately? There is only one place to buy buttons where I live, and you can't buy them by number any longer as they come on cards of 5 but shirts and blouses usually have 6 buttons which means you need to buy 2 cards of buttons leaving you with 4 spares. And of course they aren't cheap. So yes, I want a spare button on my garments, but I don't like them when they are sewn on the inside label.

I recently bought a new dress from a store which had a missing button. I checked the dress and there was a spare button. I brought the dress for $25, sewed on the spare button and had a brand new dress for $25 instead of $79 thanks to a spare button. Fantastic value.

Just this week he gave me a pair of shorts missing a button, when I asked did he have the button he looked at me blankly so it was off to my button tin, but even then it wasn't easy getting one the right size.

It's great because to buy and replace a button is expensive single or in a pack and it can be impossible to match. If you are throwing button clothes out remove buttons as they can come in handy.

Two sisters drove him around a couple of streets where he saw someone riding it and when they called out the man dropped the bike and ran off. The hide of some people. It's an electric bike so not cheap.

I go to the meetings, but I do letter writing for my field service, and this month I'm Auxiliary Pioneering, going for over 30 hours. I only leave my home to buy food, and take my dog to the Vet. I had Covid just over a year ago. My husband had a cough and cold and went to bed for 1 day after finding it was Covid then he was fine but 5 days later when I bent over to make the bed I found I couldn't breathe. I had palpitations, extremely high blood pressure, nausea, giddiness and trouble with my eyes. I tested positive for 10 days and many of the problems didn't go. My blood pressure was still high a month or so ago and I started to suffer a lot of odd things. I got planta fasciitis in my left foot followed by Achillies tendonitis then Adema. My right hand became swollen and I was diagnosed with skiers thumb, I don't ski, then my right foot began to give me trouble and they found I had 2 ganglion cysts. All the while I still had nausea. My life was pretty miserable but bit by bit and many doctors appointments later I started to feel better, apart from the nausea then my husband got up a couple of weeks ago saying he hadn't slept too well and would have a quite day so I went for my physio appointment and was greeted by hubby when I got home who told me he had just tested positive for Covid again. It was 1 year and 4 days after the last time. Five days later I woke up with post nasal drip and I knew I was going to test positive so rang the GP who prescribed different antivirals to last year and he said if I got breathless again I was to call an ambulance. When I finished the antivirals I took another test and found I was over it and everything else I had been suffering. This is the best I have felt since I caught it last year. All I had this time was post nasal drip but I had done a lot of praying and my prayers were answered. I'm not so afraid of Covid now but hubby still has a cough. Just when you think things in the world can't get any worse they do and I feel so sorry for the brothers living in parts of the world that have trouble and wars. I'm sure there are brothers in Ukraine, not sure about Israel but I feel sorry for the people living in the midst of countries that want them all wiped off the face of the earth. We all need Jehovah's kingdom. Hope all goes well with your pioneering.

I don't understand it,I just fix it. Apparently my mother in law did the same with hers, she thinks it's sooo funny( NOT). So I keep all the buttons for future use. Realistically it would save you 5cents on the cost so I prefer to have them.

Of course that is the problem with this "Globalisation" nonsense the politicians forced our countries into adopting. As the Covid Pandemic showed us almost every country in the world experienced catastrophic shortages of Medicines, Food and other essentials which countries used to make themselves but the politicians had decided we needed to support so-called Developing Nations, mostof which were run by Dictators they were supported by the Unions in this disaster and now, despite the worst of Covid being behind us,there are still shortages and once self-reliant countries are only now starting to once again manufacture the things we need. Clothing Made in Australia used to last a long time, the buttons stayed on whereas today we still bring in slave labour made rubbish which simply does not last.

I doubt the saving w/o the spare button would be much. Perhaps it would only be a few cents. I have had clothes with buttons barely sewn on, and if you pull the thread, the whole button will fall off. They don't seem to know them so they stay on. Maybe that costs too much! LOL

A tip for someone who sews and/or needs buttons for crafts or whatever - go to the thrift stores and look for nice buttons on cheap shirts. You can then donate the shirt to an organization or a church that needs fabric to make patch quilts.

But for the majority of the cheap fashion that prevails today, it is not worth it. Usually, the buttons are attached so loosely that just one spare wouldn't be enough, and the garments are usually worn out before long anyway.

I have had to sew quite a few buttons on different shirts and pants and I always have a button that is similar or a match. I brought my Aunt some very cute cat buttons and she said she was going to put them on a cardigan she has. Love buttons some are ridiculously cute.

When that dress wore out, I saved those buttons and have sewed them onto many other shirts, dresses etc. over the years. One of the best investments I ever made! lol PS, still have the buttons waiting for a new outfit. :)

Looking at most shirts the buttons are not sewn on to stay on. Also the cost would be nothing to have the spare button so going without won't change the cost of the item.

I was wondering if they are instructed to included buttons by the wholesaler or store. Sure, it's not much to add for a shirt worth $100, but a cheap shirt around $5 it would take off a bit of the margin. It would be interesting to know what percentage of people actually make use of the button - I'd say less than 10%, although there seems to be a fair percentage who replied who like it.

They are not so well sewed on these days, so easy to lose one. If I am making something to wear or knitting, they come in handy. Being 80 years old, the old saying comes to mind "Waste not, want not.". Try going to a shop these days to buy a replacement button for something. They are very expensive. If I am getting rid of something or to use as rags, I always cut the buttons off & sometimes the zips. I'm from the "silent generation" we wasted nothing.

I've used them dozens of times on my hubby's stuff when he's lost a button at work (works night shift as a security guard at a retirement village)...needs to look professional all the time. It's good that other shirts/pants come with spares, so I can fix this missing button. It's a dying art. BTW...I"m Gen X..so I learnt this at school in home ec. I'm not the world's best at sewing, but I can make sure a damn button ain't coming off...lol

At least the button is actually there if you need it, rather than suddenly disappearing in a puff legalese small print excuses that means the insurance company can weasel out of paying you anything. Mind you, the times when I have lost a button has usually been on a shirt that did have the spare one. That button probably adds way less than half a cent to the price of the shirt anyway, but I can see environmentalists targeting it as another biohazard plastic that needs to be gotten rid of.
