Child proof lids
Kirsty12-Mar-23
I have struggled to: 'squeeze whilst pushing down AND turning' a toilet cleaner lid, that once finally off, I left off!
What do you think are the worst 'childproof' lids to get off / containers to get into?
Comments
  • Hands age like the rest of us, especially if they ache with arthritis. I've tried various methods, when all else fails I present them to hubby. We do finally manage!

    • All of the below mentioned and firstly finding some specs to read the tiny writing on each individual different instructions on these things.. my other pet hate is opening the plastic ring pulls off things like a bottle of cooking oil.. Firstly wrestle unscrewing the new lid at times then finding the sealed plastic ring pull under that..and the ring just rips off in your hand!! So out comes the knife so I can just stab a hole into it grrrrr

Enough to drive u batty! 😬

    • Sometimes the child proof things are the ones I have my kids open for me!!
      ·
      • What's wrong with you?
        ·
    • i have trouble getting the lids off!
      ·
      • Stick it in between the door hinges....and twist. An old trick my dear Mum...taught me. Some are easy, but some are harder.
        ·
    • Yes, it can be hard, but can be done, or they would not still sell these products. If you go to Google, search engine, they actually give instructions on how to open child proof containers. It shows illustrations as well. Go look it up!
      ·
      • I manage, I don't ask people to open things for me. Use a bit of strength or use an object to help open it.
        ·
        • If only they were just childproof - they seem to be hard for all of us apart from children to open!
          ·
          • They aren't easy for most kids to open you liar.
            ·
        • I don't know, but I know my son (who is now 18) at 3 years old got into a child proof Tylenol bottle. It was put up out of his reach, but he was sneaky. I was also pregnant with my 3rd child and feeling horrible, so I was laying down. Still keeping an eye on him, but I must have dozed longer than 3 minutes. He got into it and started eating the Tylenol. I had to rush him to the emergency room and they said it was close to being lethal to him. It didn't matter how much I childproofed and took all precautions.
          ·
          • You obviously didn't lock it up... and most 3 year Olds can not open lock poof containers. You were the only one to blame an your lucky your kid survived.
            ·
        • I pass them to my partner to open but the worst are hospital grade cleaning liquids, mouthwash and certain medicine for children.
          ·
          • That is so weak! Women are just as capable of opening things as men are, unless you are very old and have arthritis, there is no excuse to rely on men to do it.
            ·
        • Child proof lids drive me crazy !! BUT ! I understand how important they are.
          ·
          • Actilax by far the worst bottle
            ·
            • Mouthwash bottles
              ·
              • Easy for kids, not so much for adults 😂
                ·
                • It's not easy for kids at all, that's why we have less poisoning of kids. Why do you think they have them in the first place?
                  ·
              • All of them. What would I do without my kids to delid things for me???
                ·
                • I hate the squeeze and turn ones....
                  ·
                  • I just tested myself by opening a unopened container of duck bleach. The instructions said squeeze down on the sides of the tabs, I did that but it wouldn't move, so I got a (towel)and then it was more easier to get a better grip to open it. Obviously they made it harder to open so kids don't get into it.
                    ·
                    • Not just for kids has anyone trying to open a Harpic Toilet Cleaner Bottle
                      ·
                      • the older i get means all of them.
                        ·
                        • Definitely the pushdown and squeeze bottle tops, especially when they are on too tight in the first place.
                          ·
                          • Lids on bottles of Methylated Spirits and Turpentine. Near impossible.
                            ·
                            • My problem is the little tab inside the lid. They have tiny little bits that you can't possibly get off so I end up stabbing them with a knife or skewer. They are turning up on all sorts of things now, sauce, hand cream, shampoo. I don't know if it's about tamperproof but it certainly keeps me entertained trying to prise them off.
                              ·
                              • I have a 21/2 year old who has no problem, but Nani is a whole different story!! Just keep out or each,, like when we were kids.
                                ·
                                • Childproof sometimes means 'Rodproof'.
                                  ·
                                  • And no shelves that a small child can climb up. Ladder or stool not needed

                                  • I like that ,ha ha,my type of humour, good on you Rod.
                                    ·
                                • Jam jars, sauce bottle lids, medication bottles, bleach and toilet products. I understand the concept of them, But that doesn't stop the anger from flowing freely!
                                  ·
                                  • They can be difficult to get off
                                    ·
                                    • Some are just everyone proof. When I was young my grandparents and mother would get me to open things with child proof lids or airtight sealed as they couldn't (arthritis). Worst are turpentine, some jam jars are horrible to open.and those oil bottles with the seal and internal ring pull seal (that always breaks).
                                      ·
                                      • I had cough medicine and trying to get that off wasn't funny
                                        ·
                                        • I think they should be called adult proof because most children can open them.
                                          ·
                                          • I would not say most kids can open them.
                                            ·
                                        • I don't use them often enough to comment.
                                          ·
                                          • some are not only childproof but adult proof which are very hard to open
                                            ·
                                            • They are also Old people lids...with arthritic hands or fingers - impossible.
                                              ·
                                              • Hopeless for aged or arthritic hands. What was wrong with locking the cleaners in a cupboard.
                                                ·
                                                • The ones you use most often!
                                                  ·
                                                  • I'm pro safety lids, but some of them are hard to open even for adults
                                                    ·
                                                    • I don't have afrthritis in my hands (yet), but the last year or so my hands are just not strong enough to do the push squeeze turn trick all at the same time. When I finally get someone to open them for me I do not close them properly, and even though have no small children in cooee I still keep them on a high shelf in the laundry, though the toilet ones I do keep behind the toilet. One of the woes of getting old.
                                                      ·
                                                      • use a towel as it helps with the grip.
                                                        ·
                                                    • Agree Kirsty . I have trouble with those bottles. Don’t know how old people with arthritis get on or maybe they don’t buy them.
                                                      ·
                                                      • You can buy stuff that is non toxic that's easy to open up.
                                                        ·
                                                    • If you have no children in the house or visiting then what is the point. However, we did not have these child proof lids when I had my 3 young children. I did this. I got down on my hands and knees and looked around every room. Where I found anything a danger to the children I fixed it, adjusted it, locked it, etc. When in use I kept it well out of their reach and I always had a gate across my kitchen area so they could not get in to the oven etc. Laundry was always locked and I had a latch on the toilets and bathrooms also so they could not get into these products at all. There are ways around things if one uses common sense to keep them safe.

                                                                  ·

                                                                    ·
                                                                    • When we were in Canada we were camping in a national park and the park had bear proof bins. I was 12 at the time and there was no way I could get the lid open. Yes it can be very frustrating but they are on there for a reason. My parents were in Apex when I was a kid and my parents knew of a little girl who swallowed soap or ate some thing she shouldn't like a dishwasher powder disc and she had burnt all the inside of her throat. Had to have a huge amount of operations so if you do get a child proof lid off and you don't put it back on just make sure it is out of reach of little people because they are just unaware of the possible dangers of swallowing some thing bad. They just think it could be a lolly or a soft drink and they taste it, then the damage is done and it can be very quick too.
                                                                      ·

                                                                        ·
                                                                        • Why are so many women weak in the hands? And I'm not referring to those in their 70+
                                                                          ·
                                                                      • I can never open those child-proof locks. So I take them to a toddler down the road who opens the for me!
                                                                        ·

                                                                        ·
                                                                        • Not all products that are child lock proof are hard to open. What is wrong with people today, so many unfit and can't use their hands properly.. How the hell then do people mangage to cut up meat and vegetables, or whatever? Go and do some wood chopping and strengthen your arms and hands. People don't do enough physical activities and that's why they start to lose strength in their limbs after a certain age. This seems to be a mostly western disease and it's even effecting people that are not really that old yet. I can open most things eventually... even if it's a bit hard at first, the worst is some jars or cordial bottles... can be put on too tightly, but I wrap a tea towel around the top and usually it budges...or put between the door hedges and twist, and, hey presto, it opens up. Years ago I opened up a bottle of something with my teeth.
                                                                          ·
                                                                          • I agree with Kirsty being older and with arthritis and find the toilet cleaners almost impossible to open. What happened to parents having some responsibility to make sure things are kept away from children
                                                                            ·
                                                                            • You can buy ones that are easy to open. It's the more chemical toxic ones that are harder to open. If you look for the more natural cleaning products it should not be so much of a problem. Some have flip up lids that you just pop up.
                                                                              ·
                                                                          • None as they are all misnamed they are actually ADULT PROOF LIDS which almost any child can open at will.
                                                                            ·
                                                                            • I don't think that is true! They do strength tests on these products before releasing them on the market.
                                                                              ·

                                                                            ·
                                                                            • child proofing should simply be putting stuff out of their way
                                                                              ·

Also, as many people become older and they lost their ability to grip or just plain power in their hands, these things become impossible to undo and people often resort to slicing them with knives etc in order to open them.

Is it not that they are so difficult to get off the first time that people simply do not close them fully? Isn't the best way really to keep these products up high and preferably in a cupboard which has a push-button opener high up on one side so that small children cannot reach nor are strong enough to press the button?

Anything that says 'CHILDPROOF' in the directions - I despite with a passion. It will stop an adult for opening it - but will not 'stop or slow down' a child from opening the item. I am at the point - where anything that says "CHILDPROOF.' - in the directions - I SOLVE that problem by refusing to buy the item (PERIOD). In my humble opinion (HAHA), the worst offender is -:'squeeze while pushing down and turning' (RIGHT) - which I have found (personally) biological impossible for me to accomplish - I end up using an electrical knife to cut off the upper part of the plastic container!

I tested perishable food (items that came in a can, etc.) or perishable items (toilet paper, etc.). The pay was really good - but I have to join Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to continue testing products. I do not want to become an 'influencer' in the digital world (made me very uncomfortable) - seems like I have a (tiny) conscience (HAHA)!
