The Grammer and Spelling Police!!
Daniel T 62610312-Sep-22
Is it just me, or has there been a rise in people who in insist on correcting other people's Spelling and Grammar?? (even now, I'm sure I've probably put a full stop in the wrong place or misspelled a few words)

Is this a battle worth fighting or just plain Jerky, what do you think??

By the way, it annoys the crap out of me

  • The teaching of spelling and grammar has been abolished. We have a friend who is a Primary School Teacher. Her main subject is English yet, by her own admission, she has great difficulty spelling even the simplest words and that would include most of the words I have written which have more than four letters! People have become so accustomed to using as few letters and almost no punctuation thanks to the arrival of Mobile Phones etc. that spelling, grammar and punctuation have become obsolete. So far as I am concerned I think that is a great pity - BUT we have to move with the times.

    • Certainly such a great pity. I will not be moving with the times.

    • A great & relevant song "The times, they are a changing".

    • I thought it was essentially a requisite requirement to spell well if you were a teacher. It was when i was at school. At least the teachers could spell.

                          • Ba ha ha it is grammar. We're on social media. How we spell and compose our sentences is going to come up for scrutiny. I read a lot as a little kid, to escape the reality of a miserable home life and used to think my spelling and grammar was excellent. Not so sure now. Sometimes it annoys me, if somebody is trying to prove a point. Other than that.....in the grand scheme of things, who cares? Nobody's perfect.

                            • I do editing and proofreading for work, and I never correct spelling and grammar when I’ve not been asked to do so. I think it is rude and can be a form of bullying and belittling someone. If the spelling or grammar is wrong but the meaning is clear, there’s no need to annoy the writer with corrections. And if no one ever made mistakes, I would have a lot less work!

                              • I think most of my writing is legible. I do it offline as well, and that's what counts as far as I'm concerned. Not the opinions of people who them selves are probably using a computer to help them write.

                              • Oh, you lucky girl Suzanne. I would love a job like that. This brings to mind when I bought a book for the family many years ago. I think it was The Hobbit (don’t quote me on that). It was that style of book. I read the forward where it explained that the typist got the impression that the author was dyslectic because of the funny names in the story. She dutifully corrected the names to what she thought they should have been. Obviously she had never had exposure to the fantasy genre of literature. It took another 50 years before there was a 100 % correct version of the book available with all the funny spellings of names just as the author had intended in the first place.

just saw your reply and that is so funny about The Hobbit or whichever book it was. I have to be careful when I proofread anything relating to cars as I don't drive, so some of the terminology is like a foreign language to me :) Luckily google helps me through it all. I can't imagine being a proofreader in the days before google!

                              • It really isn't or should not be a battle. Most people would be mature enough to allow, without being offended, someone point to out that they have misspelled a word or used the word in the wrong place. We cannot learn from our mistakes if we don't know we have made a mistake.

                                • I think most people have some insight if they do make a mistake, but maybe some don't care for others opinions. It gets to the point of being a TROLL when that happens.

                                          • If people don't mind appearing uneducated and unintelligent, and are happy to lower their standards in some sort of plebeian effort to gain perceived social acceptance, what is the problem? I have always wondered though, with language (both written and spoken) being (arguably) the most useful and powerful tool that modern humans wield, why not make an effort to master the skill? Not doing so is just indicative of a modern anti-social bent or a slovenly mindset. It's the old, "I'm too cool for school". And I can tolerate poor spelling/grammer, especially since the world is now full of people who speak/write English as a second language, but it's these UPPERCASE IDIOTS that should be banned from using keyboards.

I found out at the age of 32 that people in the Registry office made a mistake when (in those days hand wrote in fountain pen your birth certificate) and my name was spelt incorrectly.

Now I've also criticised others polls/discussions sometimes as well. I've seen more bad writing amongst people that don't usually write these discussions, than people who post a topic though. Most of them rarely get complained about. I saw many bad mistakes and poor writing all week long. And I do observe this as I tend to read most of the replys. So it isn't just the forum writers who make mistakes. Some do it all the time. Most are too lazy or incompetent to recorrect their errors. And they are often the first to complain about others who write the forums. Strange!

But funnily enough, I've seen some appalling spelling/grammar, from rewardia at times as well. Go back and read some of their old...topics and trivia/polls and you will see what I mean. I think they have some who's language isn't english as a first language.

If they don't pronounce words correctly it could also be an indication of how they write. I've been known to pull people up for not saying a word the right way. I hear some ugly speak language sometimes and it's worse than bad writing. Word formation starts at a early age. You hear some kids still calling their parents still mummy and daddy at the age of ten. I find bad speaking quite deplorable!
                                                                      ·

This grammar policing is nothing new and certainly, not encouraging for people who may not be a native speaker of the language in question or may not have been taught correctly in the first place as this can discourage discourse and make the person feel bad about themselves because they feel they are being "picked on". I believe that unless someone WANTS to be proofread on an internet forum, then leave them alone. As long as you can understand the intent of the post, then no harm done. We are all guilty of typos and whoopsie errors and language and protocols are dynamic and rules evolve with society. Isn't it ridiculous enough that there are proper English spelling and pronounciation and American English to contend with before you bring in all other rules pertaining to correct use of language?
                                                                        ·

Despite the availability of more writing tools, books, computers, etc, people are either more stupid in our age, or lazy, or both.

I really hope that when I have sent something which has been incorrectly autocorrected, that people don't think that my language skills are awful. I hate how many times you turn autocorrect off from devices, that, usually when there is some form of software upgrade, this feature mysteriously turns itself back on (as do lots of other features I hate and don't want to use).

Basically you can't recorrect anyone's writing. It's up to the writer to do that. Some have poor English due to being a non white person. Or born in a non English country.

It is definitely not a battle worth fighting and/or letting it annoy the crap out of you - 'des critiques et non des createurs'!

Simply because they didn't like me adding another letter to a certain word. It's like they assume one did it deliberately. They know who they are, and I won't mention who they are. 2 females, and one nosey male, and he virtually admitted it. They have nothing better to do than complain to REWARDIA. And rewardia changed my poll, and I told them where to go. They discriminated against me. They didn't do that to the others tho. So I'm not on good terms with rewardia these days.

We do not speak as Shakespeare and his generation did either. However, I do not think enough emphasis on spelling and grammar is made these days. I as APB cannot stand the word "like" or "at the end of the day" and similar used constantly in a conversation . I think the use abreviations such as lol, btw, etc. is annoying as I hardly know what the letters stand for in many cases. But language evolves so who knows what the next generation or two will come up with.

And their school results are worse than 20+ years ago. Some are just too lazy to write a proper sentence. Of course....you should not write, btw, or lol, in a written letter nor document. On the internet it doesn't matter as much as it's just casually written stuff. But at least try and make yourself understood. That's what counts.
