Everything tanning

What is your preferred method of tanning, and how often do you tan? Do you use anything to prevent damage if you use a sunbed or tan naturally? Do you have any flawless tanning tips and tricks?

I used to like being tanned. I would often lay in the sun and toast both sides of me. Now I don't go out in the sun much at all. If I do I seek shade and wear a hat.

I avoid sunlight as much as possible as any tan I get; I ALWAYS peel right away. So my preferred method is not tanning at all now

If you live in Australia then dont tan, Slip, Slop, Slap we have the highest rates of skin cancers in the world. If you must go into the sun use sunscreen and a hat

My skin seems to have got more melanin in it as I have aged. Don't know what that's about! I spend small amounts of time in the sun. Seem to tan fairly quickly. In winter I moisturise and put a few tanning drops into my moisturiser. I like the way a tan looks though it is not fashionable now due to skin cancer scares. If I am spending longer than half an hour in the sun, I will slip, slop, slap - I don't want skin cancer or sunstroke!

Don’t intentionally tan by lying in the sun but use 50+ sunscreen when out and about

Use sunscreen to prevent bad sunburn. I have to, I could get burned in the moonlight.

Funny how hard we worked at tanning when me and my pals were in late teens and early 20s- back in the 80s. Lying out like lizards drenched in oils and playing foreigner or duran duran on our tape decks haha. Didn't think or know about skin cancer then. These days i couldn't give didley squat about being pale. Love the sun but can't sit in it for any length of time its so hot! And still lovin 80s music though.

I was brought up to slip, slap and slop. slip on a shirt, slap on a hat and slop sunscreen. Australia is the world capital for melanomas and, like our snakes and salties they can kill and certainly make life difficult

I slip, slip, slap. Spent most of my life in Nth Queensland & have a certain amount of tan that is permanent. If you're going to lay or be in the sun try not to do it between 11 & 2. A certain amount of sun each day with SPF is healthy, a particular level of brown isn't.

I don't bother tanning, keep out of the sun as much as I can but still go out for short period for a bit of Vitamin D. Now we're all born with white bones and red blood regardless of race, so we are all equal, it's just the wrapping that's different so it really bugs me when some people of a certain skin tone (e.g. causasian) act in a racist manner to some who have a darker skin tone, and then they go out and want to get a tan.

Australia has the highest skin cancer rates in the world. We avoid the sun and tanning as much as we possibly can. We have had a campaign running for well over 50 years and still does today to slip slop slap and slide now. We slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen at least a 50+ these days and slap on a hat and now we slide on our sunnies. We lose around 2'000 people a year from skin cancer and it all could be avoided if we just took a little care. Tans here are not cool at all and I hope some people will take heed because it could just save their lives.

That was a real eye opener and she told me how much they have to repair on other customers with sun damage. Anyways, after doing my own research later on concluded that all skin experts (whether beauty therapists, aesthetitian, doctors, surgeons and dermatologists) warn to avoid the sun for a reason so I've used sun safety since. Another less known way to gain a slight natural tan is to eat a lot of foods with carotenoids like beta carotene. Foods like sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots and spinach and many others are rich in carotenoids. Also if you eat 55grams concentrated tomato paste every day that helps protect your skin from sun damage due to the antioxidant lycopene but you need to eat for a month (like most vitamins and mineral supplement) before you can gain the benefits. Aside from tanning I read somewhere a trick from a model that they use sometimes to give a nice glow: a body foundation where they mix some glitter powder, bronzer, a little body oil and some foundation and apparently it helps make them red carpet ready.

There is no such thing as a safe tan – whether from the sun or a solarium. ... Even if a suntan fades, the damage remains. The more you tan your skin, the greater your risk of skin cancer.

My mother had a melanoma on her calf when she was pregnant with my brother and ended up in hospital for 9 weeks and had some VERY radical removal of her whole calf and the lymph nodes up to her thigh. She was always embarrassed by the scar that remained and never went anywhere without pantihose on. Although she didn't die of a melanoma she did die aged 62 of breast cancer but I still recall the scars and the trauma it caused her. Thankfully my brother was later born normally but I wonder to this day of the effects that the chemotherapy drugs had on his development. My mother was a red haired, blue eyed girl with Scottish heritage and grew up in the country where, in the 50's there was no knowledge of skin cancer and the sun's rays and the damage caused. My youngest son who is 32 has his grandmothers complexion and I constantly remind him to always wear sunscreen when outside. He doesn't always listen but the thought of intentionally going outside unprotected is BEYOND me. But things were different back when I was growing up and beforehand but as my father's father also died of melanoma I take the risk very seriously. A market gardener from country NSW he spent all day out in the hot sun. I can't understand the desire to burn yourself and your cells but I suppose to each his own! Thanks for reading!

I fake tan on the odd occasion if I am going out or have an special event on. I've learnt to exfoliate and shower before tanning to remove any old tan or body products first, then make sure you don't touch it or get it wet for at least an hr while it dries. That's about it. Oh & don't choose a cheap fake tan or you'll look like a Oompa Loompa or for the Americans on here, Donald Trump lol

We have a very hot sun downunder and tanning on the beach etc. is leading to so many skin cancers / melanomas people are starting to be more aware. However, playing sport, walking etc. must be done with care. It can kill or leave terrible scars. I have had skin cancers taken off my face and neck etc. and part of my nose removed and my sister is going into hospital tomorrow to have a large one removed from her nose/face. It can kill. We loose around 2000 people a year to skin cancer here and in 2018 there were over 1 million treatments for squamous and basil cell carcinomas. At least 2-3 people will be diagnosed with skin cancer in Australia before they turn 70 the risk higher for men than women. Melanomas affect the young mostly between 20 - 39 year olds. I am not sure about spray tans as I always think people look orange and weird with it and I do not know if the spray is a chemical which would not be a good idea to spray on oneself although there is probably organic ones but I just would not bother.

I remember seeing a young woman from the outback who was around 30 years old and her skin was deep brown and looked like dried leather. She worked on a station out in the sun all day every day. Very disturbing .

When I walk with my dog I get enough tan and that is usually when the sun has not come out fully or when it goes down.
