Why Tipping Is So Out Of Control In The U.S.?
Andrzej J08-Apr-23
Tipping in the United States is on the rise, and experts are calling it tipflation. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the number of tips provided at full-service restaurants grew by 17% from the fourth quarter of 2021. Meanwhile, the tip frequency at quick-service restaurants rose 16% during the same time period. The pressure to tip well in front of the tip receiver, before a service is completed, or in front of other customers makes a difference for many. After customers swipe their credit card, they're typically prompted with three large tipping options on a screen. While businesses can opt out of the tipping feature, most aren't. In fact, even Starbucks started prompting customers for tips in stores in September 2022. With Americans being pressured to tip higher percentages and for more services, the question is, where is the tipping point?

        • Tipping is not on the rise in America. The price to go out to eat and have coffee has gone way up. Yes, more well to doers are going out just as much as they always have, and they still tip well, but that's the exception, not the rule and tipping still may be prompted?????.but it isn't demanded...tell the whole story, not just post a few numbers that don't represent the whole issue.

        • Tipping is how we show appreciation for service industry workers who's hourly rates are lower. So tips are pretty helpful to them making money number one and number two is we aren't tight when we've gotten great service. No one is forced to tip. We make our own decisions based on many factors. But put the shoe on the other foot. They earn their tips for all the requests and demands we place on them. Going out should be the way you want it. If you are paying, request your order be to your liking and tip well for it coming to you the way you asked, if you can. Donation jars on counters are not the same as tips. Tips are for someone specific.

          • Not all restaurants are charging surcharges in Australia but it's becoming more common. If you dine out on weekends and esp public holidays, then you could find yourself paying more to cover the extras that the businesses have on weekends, public holidays. Some of this is due to the extra wages that the workers get on weekends and public holidays. So beware if you do eat out on weekends and holidays. It's best to eat out on weekdays, esp quite times, so avoiding higher chargers.

            • Some restaurants are now charging surcharges and that's got nothing to do with tipping their staff. It's just a charge that some eateries are changing extra for. Some are calling it a big rip off! Seems like it.

                      • I will never understand why it it the customer's responsibility to effectively pay staff wages via tips, rather than the business they are employed by. I am obviously not a US citizen as I find this system utterly ridiculous. Wages are a cost of doing business. If you can't afford to pay your staff properly, you should not be in business. Thankfully I don't live in the US, so tipping here is only for exceptional service & not expected.

                          • Many in the hospitality workplace get paid by tips only because the casual rates for workers is so low, but the standard of service in the USA is absolutely wonderful and one doesn't mind a tip because of that. However, I object to a tip being automatically placed on the bill as is being done here in Australia, because the standard of service here leaves a hell of a lot to be desired in my humble opinion.

                                  • We only tip in Australia if we are very happy with the service, but we have very high wages. Many workers in America live off their tips because the wages are so low. When we lived there in 79/80 tipping was a % and they would count the tip before they got on with the job. Tipping should not be expected but people should also get a living wage and not be expected to survive on tips.

                                                  • I tip when I have it to tip. Being on a single income, the price of the meal is almost more than I can afford. I think there should be a better way. I love to tip when I get good service. However, I can't understand why it's based on the cost of the meal. If you get something that doesn't require that much service, why do I have to tip the same amount? If there is a large group of people who require a lot of service, then I think they should leave a good tip. But when it's just me, and all they do is take my order, bring it and ask me how everything is, why tip 15%? Sometimes I barely see the waitress once I get my order which I don't mind if I don't need anything. I'd rather not be bothered a lot if not necessary. The whole system sucks! Raise the minimum wage. I also wonder why the sales tax has always been 6% in Pennsylvania. It hasn't changed for at least 70 years. Wouldn't a 1% increase produce a lot of revenue without really hurting our wallets?

I don't think any food service worker has any benefits (though I could be wrong). Have you tried to buy any medications lately? These people work very hard and have to put up with all kinds of indignities. A little top up on their pitiful wages can go a long way. I'm a 15% tipper whether in Ontario (Canada) where the minimum wage is $15.50 or so and hospital/doctor services are government paid for. In the U.S. where wages are so low, almost every service worker has to try and try to live on wages so far below the poverty line I'm sure the little extra I pay helps.

Fast food places and take-out places should no expect a tip, unless they have gone above and beyond to accommodate special requests. The media is full of stories about servers who have received outrageous tips for whatever reasons they have. Ordinary people who are struggling to keep up with inflation, that choose to go out once in a while, to celebrate a special occasion should not be made to feel obligated to leave a huge tip, or guilty if they can't.

Businesses (particularly big corporations in retail or the food and beverage industry) refuse to pay their employees a decent wage, so these workers have to rely on tips from patrons and customers. If they were paid a living wage like they are in some other countries, then tipping wouldn't be necessary. It's actually frowned upon in some countries to tip your servers.

I've noticed a couple of American companies slowly pushing for that direction here in Australia and there's just no way I'll support such a business model. I'll offer you to keep the change or whatever if I like you and the service provided but it should never be expected to pay more.

We don't have tipping in Australia and when I have been in America 10% of what ever the meal cost was concidered an okay typical amount.( some years ago now and I am sure I would actually be insulted by the tip amount now.) Really all they are doing is pushing out the people who can least afford to buy their services. We can tip here but there is no pressure too not like in America it is expected almost demanded to be paid. I also guess this may have some thing to do with minimal wage and I know some people live off their tips and not what the job really pays because they wouldn't survive if they had to. Maybe if the minimal wage was half decent they wouldn't need to be so reliant on tips and then there would be no pressure to pay it. Besides a tip used to be for a job well done and a sort of surprise for the waiter not these days and especially not in America. To me this is just chasing the dollars the companies ill deserve and to line their own pockets and boost up profits for the investors.

The tipping asked for is only because you aen't paying for the service. In Australia people are paid a wqge and you only tip if you want to. That's a bonus on top of your wage.

When I was in the US the waiter in a somewhat posh hotel told me that to get the job she had to bid as low as $US5.50 per HOUR. Slave Labour still exists in the Land of the Rich! They rely on Tips to make ends meet. That is the way they do things there. With Inflation, which, just as in Australia, has little to do with the massive increases in Retail Grocery prices, running at around 8% and Grocery and other Retail prices rising by around 21% of course the expected Tipping Rate has increased. Yes, you get that burger for just $US1 but when the employer is paying some college student just $US3 per hour it is no wonder tipping is needed. Can you imagine anyone in Australia agreeing to work for that hourly pay? I very much doubt it and anyway it would probably be Illegal.

They could learn from Australia and NZ, etc. It's a lot harder for America's poorer people to give tips if they eat out, than those who are well off financially. They should be protesting in the streets over this. The restaurants should pay the wages and any extra should be seen as a gift only. Same with taxi services.

Why is it that people in the US are ok with the poor getting poorer? People that expect tips are the worst paid because employers are allowed to either not pay them anything or pay them next to nothing and expect customers (who are already paying for the goods) to fork out more money to subsidise poor working conditions. Are customers, themselves, not also experiencing their own problems considering everything in the US is user pays? Can't pay for medical care? Then you can sit there and die. Can't afford to pay for education? Then do a crap job for crappier pay and hope for tips. This system needs to disappear and the real rich (business owners) pay staff what they are worth instead of leeching off their human workers and customers.
