Technologically "007"
Leonora 16-Mar-21
A lot of my neighbors, here in the States, have "Ring" doorbells installed. Or, another type of technology to replace their "doorbells". Another thing, many have so many gadgets, from speakers to their light fixtures being operated through the internet. It s like a spy organization cinematic plot, from earpieces to hidden cameras on one's bow tie. It's incredible, yet very impersonal.
What are your thoughts on these Technological Devices?

Too much of our privacy being taken away. Seems like a good thing at the time.

Whilst I agree there is an impersonal element to these technologies there is a personability too them also, in the sense that some of these technologies allow a inclusivity to some persons that would otherwise be left behind

Absolutely silly most are controleld by their Mobile Phones and that is the big weak point any one with a Mobile Phone can gain access to these devices and do as they please but they are marketed as Secure so the people who buy them think that are making themselves more secure when actually they are leaving the dook keys on the street with a big sign above their homes that reads Break In Here.

It can be good for your security but it can also be highly invasive. Care needs to be taken with your liberty. On a lighter side one time when we were in a holiday home my friends wife was on dinner duty when the power failed and the stove went off, she said bugger and just put it in the microwave....AND??? Lol.... I laughed so much she biffed a sausage at me. Too much reliance on modern technology can be hazardous...lol

Now days there's no such thing as too much security. The law certainly doesn't protect us. From being a pacifist, I now think sidearms might be the way. At least we would have a fighting chance.

It is good to have a camera at the front to see who is at the front door or whom is coming up the driveway as it isfor our security.

Unfortunately it's the future for our children and grandchildren to have robots do everything for us - that's if we survive. Whatever man imagines it will come to pass eventually once technology catches up. Now it is going full speed ahead with all this IT stuff. The advances in the past 50 years has been incredible but has left many behind also. I get frustrated by all this stuff and if you say as I do, that I don't have a mobile phone I get looked at as if I am mad or something. Technology is fine for certain things but if it goes down you are stuck as everything operates through them. I remember when phones went out in a certain area and a tech company here in OZ said to use the landline as people could not ring for ambulances, police, fire, etc. Great idea but it had been cut off months earlier so not possible. As soon as the NBN goes through these land lines are made defunct so one has to rely on the IT stuff and it does not work all the time. I use very little as I cannot even get around my n

We have no need for all this modern tech as our dog lets us know if anyone is there. He is our doorbell, security and companionship, as well as our group fitness instructor. He hasn't learnt to turn on the lights yet, but given time, I am sure he will. All this new tech just makes it too easy and makes people lazy and not able to think for themselves.

We turn the modem off when we go out or to bed, waste of electricity. We have 2 old fashioned burglar alarms. The 1 that came with the house has a siren & motion detecting cameras, the other has teeth & is properly trained to attack strangers. So burglars either alert the neighbourhood or get eaten.

What my neighbours have does not really concern me at all - that is their life and their own decisions are rightfully theirs. I am not at all concerned about what others think of me either - I have a right ot be eccentric if I choose to be. I dont expect others to be like me or to tell me how to live my life.

It does not make life (more) enjoyable (when keeping up with the Jones' syndrome - kicks in - and technology just keeps getting (more) expensive). The only thing I like about technology - it is very impersonal (on the surface). Furthermore, it is not going to fade into obscurity (like VHS). In my humble opinion it is 1984 - and Big Brother (the government) has (or will soon have) the technology to monitor all of us (at one time) - looking for individuals (like me) who deviate from society establish norms?!

Yes, we are, and have been, watched, listened to, spied on if you want to put it that way. But I'm glad that people are becoming more aware of this and also becoming more aware of their freedom to make their own personal choices. For me it remains "Can I live with the potential breaches of my privacy? Or live without the convenience Technology offers?". I am still undecided, but I've never been a great decision maker! Maybe Google can help with that?

We can pay unnecessary money for these gadgets but they are just fads. A new one will come by and replace existing crazes. What worries me more is the illegal use of Technology for surveillance purposes. Businesses are gathering all our information. To what end? Obviously there is a criminal element at work here. It was said once that spying will advance until spies will see, hear, and learn everything that you know. Nothing, I mean NOTHING will be private anymore. So enjoy your little devices- but try and protect your privacy as long as you possible can, because the day will come when the criminals will win, because our governments are not strong enough or savvy enough to protect us from the onslaught.

Excerpt: Google knew a young girl was pregnant before she did, by tracking her changing her choice of shampoo, (from scented to unscented, because of pregnancy changes to olfactory sense). Google started targeting her computer with baby-stuff ads - and her father worked out she was expecting. Super creepy!

I can see all of my communication-asked for and accidentally recorded ie; Someone on TV says Alexa, mine pipes up and answers. That can be quite amusing, I can also delete all communication I choose manually. Besides, I have nothing to hide, so if my Smart TV wants to report back to HQ, S'ok by me ;)

I don't have a security system or smart devices, but I use it a lot: to listen to podcasts, play my Spotify playlists, set reminders for me, tell me the news & weather, or ask it questions. It calls me "Your Highness." My sister asks hers to tell her jokes.

The information they want, (and do get), from your computer, phone, door camera, Siri, whatever, is literally teaching them how to predict what humans will do, say, look (facial muscle mapping), in everyday situations. Stores getting you to impulse buy, because of an exquisitely-timed advert sent to you, is just a happy by-product for them; they want the information of you and your life, and literally, the life of your neighbours. Think China and the Uighers people being oppressed right now. Facial mapping, predictive training - essentially basic mind reading, is allowing governments to imprison populations without jails. They just need to be able to see your face to know, in a basic way, what you are thinking.
