We seem to be going through another period where very old and antique furniture can be bought for very little...nobody wants it...when I was redoing a bathroom...it was MUCH cheaper for me to buy a solid timber dresser that was over 100 years old..and convert it to being a sink unit...than buy a crappy wood fiber unit from Bunnings ... what the new owner got was something very special ... but something else had to go ... to make it ... maybe in a hundred years time...

gosh Andrew 1, how could you use /convert such a beautiful piece of furniture as a bathroom cupboard, My brother is an antique restorer/french polisher, he works for several dealers and auctioneers to restore this type of furniture and would be crying if he saw and hear what you did to it, that would be worth a fortune, and don't worry I won't tell him LOL, I love antiques

There are guys on Air tasker and other sites who specialise in coming to your home and assembling this stuff....IKEA itself has now opened a service to come around to assemble it for you too...how hard would it be to include a sensible logical instruction list...HELLO SWEDEN...what is going on here?

An update to my earlier post! Recklessly (Or should that be "Wreck".....) I succumbed to DIY temptation again not long after writing it, after all what harm could another small bookcase do? Duly went online to find a matching one, only available in White now, that's OK, I have no colour bias, perfect harmony with the Black one..... Arrived on my doorstep this morning, great! Cold day, nothing like a bit of DIY on a cold winter's day to get the blood pumping, as long as I don't get any one the carpet. Lifted the box up...TRIED to lift the box up....it slowly dawned on me that this "Thing" was a whole heap bigger & heavier than the other one. Dragged it inside & propped it up against the dining table, where it remains. I'll get onto it tomorrow, maybe, after I've moved the furniture. It wont fit where I'd planned.
My biggest dilemma though is they sent me one worth $50 not the one I paid $20 for, what should I do?!!!!

Does anyone really trust crytocurrencies? I'm not so sure about them. I don't know, maybe, they will be more secure in the future. I've heard that the Dark Web prefers them, which doesn't help their case much, if, at all.
Mattcheeta
Cryptocurrency and regular currency will co-exist in the future.
Cryptocurrency, and owning your own crypto-wallet means you become your own bank. This is both a good thing and a bad thing.
While it is new technology, there are a lot of scammers looking to exploit those that are unfamiliar with it, and there are a lot of new 'cryptocurrencies' which can be used as "ponzi schemes"/Pump and Dumps"/"Rug pulls".
I think this is a great video that actually helps explain the concepts of Cryptography/Cryptocurrency. (I hope im allowed to post this) https://youtu.be/bBC-nXj3Ng4
Moving forward, I believe things like crypto can be very good for the world, and can improve trust in things like Elections, contracts and other legal issues.
But, it still has a long way to come before real world adoption.

My son was in a car accident where he was driving straight on a main road. The second car pulled out of a parking lot in front of him. No one was given a ticket. My insurance company stated that no ticket means both parties were at fault. Is this a true statement?
Morton B
Based on law in NZ you son had right of way, the other car was pulling out onto a carriageway and must give way or stop until way is clear. Drivers can exchange details of Name Address/contact phone number, Registration No and name of Insurance Co. If requested by other driver you must disclose this info and he must reciprocate as required under the Land Transport Act. I would also make a Police report to get it documented if police didnt attend accident esp if he refuses to supply required details. Here getting a ticket is not a requirement for Insurance Company

Sometimes when I venture out, it really does feel like we are living in an apocalypse. The social distancing. The masks. The fear in people's eyes. The avoidance in people's body language. The eerie feeling in the air freaks me out.

If we can get 100% support from all citizens in following government regulations, we can defeat this terrible virus. But it needs 100% NOT 99% or less. The ball is now in our court. The pathway to recovery is there and it is achievable. Stay strong and committed to following all government directives and we will surely win.

Do you think families will be able to get together this year for Easter?
APB
Its funny, when we all discuss Christmas...there are loads of people who get all worked and upset about it being all about Christ, and people have forgotten the true meaning etc.....Yet when we get to Easter ...another Pagan festival that the Christians stole from it's true owners...Everyone is talking about hot cross buns, chocolate eggs and bunnies...I guess the Christians couldn't come up with anything better.....

Not that long ago... I was just browsing around on the internet, and I came across a penfriend-club. I was surprised! I thought penfriend clubs died out due to the popularity of the internet. It's good that they still exist! Have you ever had a penfriend? Do you currently have one that you write to?
Warrior Woman
As a lonely teen in the UK back in the 50s and 60s I had penpals all over the world. We exchanged postcards, stamps, learnt a bit about languages and other cultures. How exciting it was to receive mail from France, Japan, USA, Italy, Norway, Jugoslavia, the Azores etc. I studied languages at School and Uni and hitchhiked around Europe meeting and mixing wonderful people including my future husband. Now Facebook has replaced letter writing and I love hearing from my many International friends every day.

When do children reach the status of having had enough experience of the world to try to tell their parents how to live their lives?
Anneliese
Lessons and learning can go both ways. You teach them things and likewise they can teach you things. Your talking about bossing someone, there should be respect from both sides. Discipline is a different thing, it's like learning what's right and wrong. However gaining experience and learning is something you will always do.

As this 2020 has been very difficult for most of us, Christmas presents can be a little bit challenging for our pockets. Are you going to buy less and cheaper gifts this year?

Yes, we were defrauded of $53,500 so it is hard enough buying the bare necessities let alone being extravagant, can't even afford to buy and post Christmas cards

Mine usually accumulates in my coat pockets and goes towards a nice bottle of wine. Or I keep it and give it to buskers. How about you?
Warrior Woman
I save up all my change at the end of the week and it goes into a special bank account for my little volunteer school in a very poor Balinese Village for children whose parents cannot afford the Government school fees. I began it as a kindergarten and it has been going now for 8 years, helped by my fundraising and donations from friends. Whenever I go over to take books, clothing, soccer boots etc., my accumulated bank deposits help pay the school bills. It is run by my Balinese friends who take no money themselves so the children can get a basic education. It is amazing how change does make such a difference to children who have nothing, not even a toy of their own. Covid has meant I cannot get over there since January and my tiny school has closed, waiting until I can get back with what I have saved.

Why are people so rude on the roads these days, before people used to give way to other people out of being polite. Now days people don't let anybody in, if you try to change lanes, people speed up so you can't If you park at the supermarket car park, once you have finished your shopping, and want to reverse out of your spot, no-one will stop to let you out, I've even had someone go around me, and I was half way out. What is wrong with people these days?

These days I get screened out alot. Either I start answering questions, then they say sorry you've been screened out. Or i actually get to the end of the survey and it says either (error) ( page not found) or screened out after im do e answering all the questions. That makes me angry because ive just wasted time in doing them. Sometimes I get 2pts as a compensation, but mostly not. That's why I hardly get points together. BS

Do you think it's deliberate when they time you out of surveys once you have answered all the questions? That way they don't have go give you points. Year to year, I've learned so much from my few plants (veggies and ornamentals) in Zone 5, but it's such a delight to see things grow. Never met a weed nor Japanese beetle I liked, but even they too have functions. I just tried to redeem some points from another survey website and they've changed the process yet again. A while back they changed the redeeming process to include phone code (either a text message or a robo-voice call) and now they insanely require you to take a photo of yourself holding your drivers license or ID, which they store on a "secure server" (yeah, right)!! If you don't, you can't redeem any points. I already had to close an account with a different survey site a...

My neighbor had a site that requested a driver's license and selfie. I was on the same site and never had that request. He sent the survey site an email indicating he was uncomfortable to do that and if there's another way he could confirm his identity, so they actually responded and indicated they would have to send him a check the first time, to be deposited into his bank when he receives it. He agreed and did receive the check and cashed it, and ever since he's had no issues with redeeming his points. I guess what I'm trying to say is email the survey site letting them know you're uncomfortable and see if another solution is offered. I'd hate to see you not be able to redeem your points.

As an only child raised by my grandmother, I never felt the strong connection that others feel with brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and parents. When we immigrated 3 years ago, I did not feel an ounce of worry or longing to go back to my country of birth. I've never felt homesick at all. Is this normal at all? Has anyone else felt the same way?
Gypsy
I was born in UK. My parents chose a different religion to their familes, and most of both families turned against my parents. Because of that rift I grew up knowing who my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins were, but not having a very close bond with them. In 1971 my father announced that we were emigrating to Australia. Before we left UK we were told that there was a house ready for us, and jobs for my father and myself. We arrived in "the land of sunshine" in June on a very wet, cold, windy day, there was also no house or jobs, so we had to live in the Pennington Hostel and look for work. That was the only time I felt homesick. As our circumstances improved we were glad we had come. In 2006 I made my first trip back to UK for a 7 week holiday, but then I was happy to return home to Australia, for me 'home' is where my immediate family are.

No supposably nothings private, We've just always got to hope that there's just so much out there, that they wont bother tuching our own, when they don't have the time.

Natural disasters where people lose everything overnight is horrible and so hard to comprehend. If you had one item (excluding people & pets) you could save from your house in a disaster, what would it be?

I lost everything in a flood twice during my lifetime, luckily i was able to save my pictures, but I lost all my good old time recipes, I miss those the most.

Who is hosting the Partae of the End of this Yearus Horribuloso? There of course could be two- one this side of the world and then we zoom via a Muskian Rocket to the US of A for the next partae. Or if we can't get our Motions together for that maybe a fave song to offer that sums up the year.. Just thinkin' what mine could be.. awwws get the tissues out..Dedicated to my Rewardian Miners. 'thankyou for bein' a friend"..and on a more personal level...
Heather the Chocoholic
No party here. Just want to forget this year happened. I seriously don't think I would've gotten through this year without the amazing people I met here, particularly on bingo. I can't think of a song for the year, so just want to say thank you for being there.

Some workplaces offer one lot of sick leave. In New Zealand it's 10 days, after 6 months in the workplace. Some offer dependant leave aswell, ie 10 personal, 10 dependant. These get refreshed on your work anniversary usually. As a solo parent..these can go very quickly. Covid has made a huge impact on this..with most schools sending kids home with any cold symptoms as a precaution. Some workplaces let the workers with a large balance of sickleave to...

Wrong - NZ by the July 24th 2021 amended legislation is a max of 10 sick days a year and one can accumulate upto a max of 20 sick days leave per annum.

A wise man said that you start out owning possessions but at some point, those possessions end up owning you....if you had to lose all your personal possessions...and just share everything...what would be the one personal object you would want to keep?
WonkyandProud
Knowing me, it would be something sentimental and totally useless to me! If I was being practical, I would keep my laptop or a telephone. Does this mean we are naked? If so, I'd keep my Eeyore Jammies! LOL

I treasure any gift I am given, except for the time my mother gave me a gift for Christmas, which I had given her the year before for her birthday. Have you ever returned a gift someone gave to you or gifted it on to someone else?
Christine M 323842
Better to regift, swap, or sell. No need to have useless things around. There is plenty of things that I actually need. Always appreciate that someone has been kind enough to think of me though.

Growing up a little boy my Mother had a vast array of cutlery she told me that if I was ever invited to tea with the Queen I'd know what spoon, knife or whatever to use...three full sizes of knives and forks...fruit spoon, soup spoon, desert spoon, jam spoon, cheese knife, steak knife, fish knife...the list went on.... I haven't seen most of these in over 40 years...has anyone else?
Rockchi
If you're hungry who cares how you shovel it in Mind you I still want to know what cutlery is what in case I ever go to a posh restaurant like in the movie Pretty Woman

What pets do you have and why?
Carolyn7 P
We have a Rottweiler/Labrador mix that is 16 yrs. old. He is very protective of the children. He has PTSD from being present when his former master was murdered. He can't stand fireworks or gunshots. I also have my cat, Sookie who is about 15 yrs. old. She was a rescue left locked in an apartment with no food or water. My Son has his black Calico, Covid Kitty who is about 2 years old. She likes to quarantine in her room, thus the name. My Grandson also has a black Calico kitten about 6 months old named Ruby, AKA, "The Scamp". She likes to sit in my inside potted plants. She was born outside to a wild Mother cat. We also have Red Slider Turtles. Cheech and Chong, Snoop and Selena. We are building a habitat on the side of our house for them. We have them because we love them and they are all family members.

Some parents don't monitor what there children watch and read, what do you think? cause I think it's proper. Our duty as parents is to monitor the PG rating of what our children watch or read, because sometimes what they watch and read control's there behavior and character. So I am just curious to see what other parents and people think?

Yes! There is a lot out there that isn’t suitable for different ages and they have difficulty distinguishing fact from fiction

Pato Lo Duck
I heard that in Asia, if a bird poos on your head it is lucky.. So I figured that if birds were lucky then having a bear poo on your head would be super lucky. Next time the koala came around I went and stood under the tree watching him, but I think he must have been constipated, so I gave up in the end and decided to continue being my old unlucky self for a bit longer..

We have problems with people sneaking across state borders or lying on their declarations. Three ladies have now brought Covid 19 back into our State after visiting a city which is a massive hot spot. I would actually charge them with manslaughter if anyone dies because of their actions.
Sandra C 12043
Just so happy to live in a state thas has closed borders even if Vics are still trying to get in illegally. Why can't they stay in their own state ??
Those 3 women should be charged regardless and if their actions kill someone then they should be charged with manslaughter.

What is the most beautiful song you have heard and what song gets you pumped every time it comes on.
I really like The Prayer. There are so many different versions on Youtube, from the best artists in the world which I often revert to when I want to take a break from Rewardia. Madonna's La Isla Bonita has a wonderful beat. I feel like jumping up and dancing every time I hear it.

Hallelujah..k.d. Lang or Pentatonix, and also

Would you choose a name for your child (or, if asked to name another's child) simply because it is popular or trendy?
Warrior Woman
PLEASE parents think about your child's future with the name you dump on it. As a teacher it was heartbreaking to see children ridiculed or embarrassed because they had been given 'cute' (at the time) or the names of once popular rock stars or celebrities or 'momentarily' popular names, often misspelt by the parents. Little "Princess", "Rowdy", "Hurricane" or "Feather" suffered and probably still do. Siobhann's mother was not Irish so she spelt it Shivawn and the poor girl had to spell it that way whenever she gave her name instead of the proud Irish way. Then came the popularity for nicknames being the real name so Archibald became Archie, John became Jack and Henry became Harry and even James became just Jimmy and Katherine became plain Kate. Give them the full, proper name so they can have a choice if they just want to be called a nickname rather than stuck with it all their life. Also please consider the name when attached to your surname. I spent a long time talking to classes that it was hurtful to burst out laughing every time poor Poppy Plant and Holly Busch were called. And honestly do people think I have never heard the joke, "What do you call a woman with one leg?"

While working in a factory a few years ago, had spare time on my hands, too keep myself busy I would go wipe down benches wash dishes etc. One particular day I did the dishes scrubbed some of them as the cups were filthy, the owner of one of these cups hit the roof as he believed that tea tastes better from a dirty cup, so what do you think?

You have plans for the upcoming weekend and have asked your sibling or close family member to watch your children, 2 under 4 years old. Do you pay the person given that when asking there was no mention of payment and it only being for 3 hours?
Maria B 89860
Labour of love is not a chore. It's like cooking and doing other things for your family or extended family and is acknowledge and thanked in a Birthday or Special Occasion cards. But neither is it forgotten as the children grow to an understanding age they are taught to return the kindness by being helpful to these caring people in as they get older .. mow their lawn and other such things.

When I shop at specific Walmart stores, not all are bad as claimed. I ve been to the upscale ones that are in the neighborhoods of famous American football players and Basketball players, and they look like a mall. Anyway, I noticed that many of those working there don t want to help assist us. I try not to take up much of their time and I thank them multiple times and be courteous, even when they aren t. It does seem to help them and many behave nicer afterwards. What do...

I tend to think that the atmosphere and staff culture of a store is set by senior management, although staff who are overworked and underpaid will react to that also.

Has anyone had any type of account hacked before? We had our Netflix hacked recently, they hacked it and watched few movies and TV shows. If you were hacked what did you do besides change password
Diana A 392333
Both my and my husband's credit card were hacked and instead of doing nothing but cancel the card and have a new one sent out and my money reimbursed by the credit card company. I went on a mission to find out who it was. To cut a long story short, I contacted the merchants and found out the name, address, phone number and e-mail addresses of the two perpetrators and handed it over to police (needless to say I also stopped the goods from being sent out). I then also contacted the local newspaper (The Mercury) and they printed an article on how I was able to track down the hackers, I also wanted to share valuable tips on how people can avoid this from happening to them from the info I got from police. The article was in yesterday's Mercury and took up almost a full page. I also noticed that The Telegraph had the article in digital version too. I urge others to make the effort to do the same, because if no one does anything, these people will know they can do it again and again and always get away with it!

When you leave a partner and you have a pet is it appropriate / ideal to have shared custody?

I'm pleased to have never been put into this situation and never will. It is hard when your pet passes away so I think sharing would be as difficult as well. I think maybe for the pet let it decide.

What would...

He sounds very selfish .I would be looking for a new boyfriend. Part of the Christmas spirit is to give what you can afford & give it with love.A surprise is good fun. Of course he's asked nicely & you are a wake up to the "act" bye the way has he said what he is buying you for a gift . I'd be looking for a more sincere man & give him his marching orders

They seem to either a). dial down their dreams in front of others in fear of what they might think or b). Disguise their aspirations with humour. Both are gutless, don't you think? When you have a dream, you should stand in your power. Dreaming small serves no-one!

I was brought up to believe not everyone will be pleased for whatever I do or have. Who wants to shop with little kids running around screaming and causing havoc. I didn t birth them and they are not my problem. I should be able to shop for my groceries in peace. A childfree supermarket would give the childless amongst us a choice.

Can we also then have supermarkets that refuse entry to ignorant adults?? I would like to shop in a moron free environment.

There is so much to be learnt from the elderly. They've lived through wars and journeyed through struggles we couldn't even comprehend. Yet they are almost dismissed by society. It really annoys me.
Cat Claw
When you're elderly, you either become invisible or an irritation. Younger people (and I include those well into their 40's even) become impatient with older people who are stuggling physically. I've seen it at supermarket check-outs all the time, the operator will whizz all the groceries through while the elderly person tries to keep up, then when the elder fumbles around trying to pay, those standing in line start sighing with impatience. I've even seen in family situations, the younger generations laughing or mocking their elders when they are trying to participate in a conversation. The whole 'ok boomer' tagline is the new "you wouldn't understand becuase you are not a parent' putdown that people who don't want to listen use. Elderly people deserve far more respect and patience than what they currently get.

Economists say that the future could possibly be cashless. But it could be problematic for low-income individuals. Do you think this would work or not ? If so, why?
Bugalugs
I already almost entirely do. I am no techno genius, nerd or particularly "modern" but I find I can manage my money better, I pay all my bills electronically (is that "digitally"?), have numerous accounts (with the same bank) and divide my income between them for specific reasons (Utilities, phone, rates etc.) so the money is always there when a bill is due. All my grocery buying is done using a Debit card.
