One thing that is quite prevalent and common in the world is drug use and homelessness. Government always talk about having program to help for rehabilitation and housing, but it seldom ever really works. What would be a smarter, more efficient, and realistic way to help deal with these growing issues?

There are many empty industrial buildings which could be modified to make "low cost housing" but many of the homeless feel they do not wish to live with their fellow man due to mental illness. Our charities do their best to provide food and short term housing for as many as they can but the provision of mental health assistance has become even harder in Australia since Psychiatric hospitals were closed.

I think it should only be used for life threatening things eg operation over seas for children that needs a very large amount money .but should have proof that it's for a genuine reason .other wise I think it's begging for money and in some cases it has been proven that people have defrauded the public .when I lost my two sons I remortgaged my home for their funerals and not using people's sympathy

I was looking at one of our wonderful retirement "resorts" (they are not called villages anymore...perhaps, so they can charge more...a resort sounds good too doesn't it?...oh I'm just retiring to a RESORT)...the entire place was coloured in shades of beige...EVERYTHING was beige...is this so that residents look around themselves and see everything in Sepia...and it looks like the old photos in their photo albums?...so they feel at home?....or is it that any hint...

Hi APB I live in a Ryman Retirement Village called Keith Park in Hobsonville in Auckland. We have a 3 bed apartment, two bathrooms, and a patio, total 112sq meters and we have two car parks. Our village will not be finished for at least another 12 months, We are ground floor for our two cats who also enjoy living here. There is nothing beige here, the building look bright and modern. Google us to see. We have so many activites Ryman have employed a full time person to organize them. We play bingo on Monday nights. Nothing depressing here it is all go go go. Nothing is too much bother for the staff they even water our patio garden when we are away. It is way better than some hotels we have stayed in. With their security there is little chance of a break in or your car being stolen. That gives you cheaper insurance, all in all its a WINWIN situation.

I don't care what they play. That being said my grandfather was a Professor of Medicine, specialising in Pathology and Anatomy. In his day he was one of the UK's leading experts in those fields. He did not approve of women/girls playing Contact Sports such as Football (AFL was unheard of) Rugby, Wrestling etc., his belief was that physiologically the female body was not suited to these sports - it had nothing to do with gender as such.
If the reports in the media around the world are true that SINCE THE ADVENT OF Women playing NRLW/ AFLW, FFW etc, the number of Women who have been badly injured as a result of taking part far exceeds, on average, those suffered by men over many years longer.If those reports are true then maybe my Grandfather was right. Of course he was a man and therefore, with today's attitude that Men are Always Wrong he would be disregarded and condemned as being a misogynist, a male supremacist or somesuch nonsense!

I have been having unusual dreams and de ja vu since I was very small. The most disturbing was a reoccurring dream of a close friend going away,for about 3 months every night this included other people and places they went . A couple of days before I saw a horrific car accident but was constantly pushed back from the flashing lights and crash scene.. Once Australia was “ one “ of the richest countries in the world. Not for out wealth but what we had. Every food crop ( except coffee), seafood,minerals. The only other thing we didn’t have was aviation fuel. What have we now. Seafood from Asia,fruit from wherever,clothing whatever country makes them,cars. In fact everything is imported. Farmers are digging fruit trees out as they can’t compete with imported stuff. What did the governments do. Sold off all of our assets. Now we use Asian owned farms,roads,seaports. We may as well move there as they are all here and plenty of room they left.

Since joining Rewardia I have managed to redeem many $$ worth of vouchers which have helped us in so many ways. Some have even bought Christmas Lights and decorations for the front of our home which is on the Christmas Lights Trail of Townsville in North Queensland. Only yesterday I discovered that my CD player had died and I needed it today so I cashed in 30,000 points for a $30 JB HiFi voucher and went and bought myself a new one much cheaper...

Why on earth do people think it is okay to loot from businesses, stores and homes when chaos ensues? This from storms to other disasters. I ve seen people steal shoes and apparently they didn t lack any of their own.

Why do so many elderly men feel the need to have a younger woman as their partner, to the extent that they will pay large amount of money to travel overseas to find one. On the other hand older single women seem much more self reliant and don't seem feel the need to replace there partner with a younger model.

It's easy for those of us who are born in amazing countries like Australia to take an entitled stance, and want to refuse immigrants. I believe in equal opportunity for all. If you were born in a third world country without access to fresh drinking water, bathing in water where the sewage outlets run into, wouldn't you want a better life for yourself, and your family? In my experience, most immigrants are hard workers, just looking to make a better life for themselves in a paradise that most of us take for granted.

We were told that someone had fraudulently used my credit card to send money by Western Union; & that our local branch had staff members who were running a scamming ring. Once upon a time I got scammed by my ex-wife. It led to a brutal courtroom fight which lasted for months. Justice prevailed (in the end), and I got alimony (and still get alimony) from my ex-wife! I wouldn't have to adapt, as I do not rely on the internet, yes I use it on occasion, but I still have the ability to use a land line to contact friends and also to hop in the car and visit and I love reading and playing games with the grand kids and great grand kids, and life would be more relaxing when you didn't have to worry about scams and AI, also I very rarely shop on line, love going into department stores, trying on clothes and getting the correct size without having to pack up and return and wait weeks for hopefully the correct size.

It's difficult to give you any advice, as I don't know your skills, experience or any training you may have had or what industry you are looking to build your business in.
As for me, I have been self-employed since the mid 1980's and started every business I had without any capital to draw from. One of my most successful businesses is one I started during a recession when people were losing their jobs and companies where closing down. My advice is to start small and simple, then build on that as opportunities arise. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty, be honest, be reliable and give your customers the quality work that they will be happy to pay for. And don't waste money on a fancy office, a flash car or the latest hi-tech phone. Remember always that you work for profit and not to pay off debts.

In the forums, I notice a lot of readers type "Karen" as a derogatory stereotype. I am a Karen, and I am getting fed up with society using my name to describe a stereotype. How many readers use it to describe someone? When I meet new people and tell them my name, I often get the response, "you're one of those Karen's". I don't get upset anymore because I've become use to it being used as an insult. My saying now is Keep calm and Karen on.

Have you been irked by some "Great deal" advertised that was utter garbage? I was shopping at BWS, and they had two prices on display, one being "normal price" and the other ONLY if you downloaded their app. What a ridiculous way to qualify for a discount. I love Liquorland, they make shopping easy. You just show them the competitor's price, and they match it, and you leave so you know you will always get the best price without jumping through a million...

My husband and I have slowly been downsizing (way before the minimal living movement became trendy). We went from an acreage and a huge federation home to living in a school bus. We love it. We now wonder why we ever spent so much money on conforming to the mortgaged white house picket fence idea. We now live debt free and travel nomadically (and we aren't grey haired yet). I up-sized eighteen years ago when I stopped full time work. I went from a nice two bedroom unit in Sydney to a spacious, open living space with an upstairs (master bedroom and ensuite, living area and deck) and downstairs (two bedrooms, bathroom, laundry, kitchen and large dining and living area. Deck at front of house, side of house wrapping around to back of house all with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. (3 min walk to beach ion central Qld coast). Whenever I walk into a "normal" house now it always seems pokey and small. I would not like living in a small space again.

I was looking at getting more solar panels for the house, but the rebate keeps getting lower, and off-peak gets higher! I heard power companies are thinking to charge us soon for taking what we put into the grid! Do you think it's worth the cost $3500 or so to get more panels now?

Solar panels are somewhat of a con trick. It costs a fortune to get them installed, then you need an expensive battery to store the power for when there is no sun. You need to keep the panels clean for best efficiency (difficult since they're usually on the roof), even then the panels and the battery *will* wear out and need replacing. Even worse, they claim it is "green" energy, yet making and disposing of the panels and batteries is hideously polluting.
Best not to bother and just stick with regular mains supply. If you can (not possible in New Zealand any longer \ud83d\ude41), use a government owned supplier so you aren't being charged excessive amounts simply to fill the greedy pockets of the electricity company's management and shareholders.

Lately when we go shopping to our local Large Store (not sure if I can say which company it is) we have noticed there are a large number of food items that are being pushed that are not made or produced in Australia. For example Bacon, on the back of the packet it states 8% made/produced in Australia some go up to 18%, there was 1 company that was 98% Australian they are no longer on display ? We now buy our Bacon from the local butcher (much cheaper too...

I used to really enjoy tinned smoked oysters. But then I noticed that the only brands stocked come from china. So I've stopped buying them. I also have noticed that some products imply by sneaky wording that they're australian, but you can tell by their australian product number, the barcode with 13 digits under it on the package somewhere. if it starts with 93 it's australian and 95 for nz.

Sometimes I engage with individuals, sometimes I argue with individuals, but I 'never' ignore individuals (might miss out - on learning something of value pertaining to human behavior). Anyway, I 'never' under any circumstances expect 'people' (especially if they are religious - example - CHRISTIANS) to turn into GOOD SAMARITANS - in the blink of an eye - ROFL! We all (including me) come with 'hidden agendas'. One, whatever your point is - got lost in translation (example - translating 'British English' to 'American English". Two, I am too cynical (which is a distinct possibility). Does having snow at Christmas make it more like Christmas for you, or does it really matter? I am from the Caribbean and enjoyed the warmth at Christmas. I moved to Canada over 40 years ago, now I cannot see Christmases without snow. My children enjoy tobogganing which, in turn, I enjoy. Hiking in the snow is also a lot of fun. Do you enjoy Christmas with or without snow?

Making money and wealth are two different things and neither are necessarily the answer to happiness. Depends on your definition of making money too. A dollar or a million dollars a day? Opportunity, falling into your lap or created, and mentoring. Intelligence and mental acuity. Knowing how to work smarter not just harder. Learning how to make money work for you, not you work for it. Luck. I've had money and a dream life, then lost everything and we ended up homeless for a time, because my now ex-husband ended up with a brain injury then a fairly rare dementia and I cared for him instead of looking out only for me.

According to the Bible, adultery is grounds for divorce but, if you choose not to divorce (if you're married), it will take time living together to regain trust, and must be earned by your mate. You will have a multitude of feeling to deal with. You should be forgiving their error, but you will never forget. If you're not married, why put up with this behavior? I am calling it a deep cleaning of my house. I am getting rid of anything I have acquired over the 20 years living here, donating to worthy causes, and making my house easier to clean at the same time. Likewise, I wondered, what do others think of this idea?

People had manners, they were polite and respected each other, there was no road rage and you hardly ever heard of domestic violence. you could go to bed and leave your windows open, and even your front door, most people were friendly, knew their neighbours and cared about them and even looked out for them. If you lent someone a dollar they paid you back and if a person gave you their word they lived up to it. We didn't have air-conditioning, coloured TV, a self parking car or microwave and we certainly didn't have the internet, ATM's, Facebook or Tic tok, but yes things were much better. You were swerved by a real person and if you phoned a business you weren't left hanging on with a droning voice telling you your call is important but no important enough to speak to you. More and more now I hear people say they preferred things when they were younger.

Is this your first baby or do you have others you need somebody to help with the care of them? Having visitors is tiring so you may need to set a time limit for everybody, unless maybe they offer to help with various household chores and you may be able to grab some rest while baby is asleep. I'm sure things like doing the washing would be helpful even better if you can sort it to the point of which room it goes in.............I would be grateful for casual help if it is a c-section as there is a lot of things you are not supposed to do......... That's when you need a granny flat to evict them to.

It amazes me now when it says sex there are so many options and once upon a time it was either male or female. Are we now going to have to have jails for all the others? Jails with no gender at all or does it go from what you were born as? Put in males that are now females or vice versa would be rather dangerous. It's more excepted these days too and people are choosing to raise their children as neither gender which I think can be confusing for every one especially the child. Why can't we just except what we are born as and be happy with that. There's always some one that wants change and can't be happy with what they have, it's so sad and it does destroy families which is even sadder again.

Why does this world need to use two types of calendars? In 1582 the Pope introduced the Gregorian Calendar, as the old calendar was incorrect by not having an allowance of a leap year & by 11 minutes in a year short fall. Apart from the Greeks, all other Orthodox religion follows the old calendar for Christmas (the Greeks go with the Catholics on this one) but for Easter and New Year, all Orthodox religions follow the old calendar.

My pension is 100% tax-free and the amount is 'quite' generous (and I get a 'quite' generous COLA - every four years - 4%). - and I have been retired for 25 years and counting. In addition, I get an alimony check from my ex-wife - every month since our divorce. Hence, my retirement is on the decadent and hedonistic level. Recently I went out and met an acquaintance. She hugged me and chatted with me and my friend. Then openly informed me she has a sore throat and a fever. I have been informed she is a nurse. She is aware I care for an elderly mother of 94 years of age yet showed no concern to the possibility of infecting me or my friend. I find this selfish. What is your opinion?

Nope! It's a massive disaster waiting to happen (as Russia found out, Japan nearly found out). It is also far more polluting then every other form of energy creation combined - nuclear waste takes millions, if not billions, of years to disappear and they have no idea what to actually do with it. There are no nuclear reactors in New Zealand and the government long ago banned nuclear-powered ships (including the US Navy) from even visiting here.

I was pleased to see Victorian tax dollars of A$215 million going towards training nurses and midwifes. What a great idea. Of course provisos will be put into place to ensure these students when they graduate put in some years in hospitals etc. This is not ongoing but for just a number of them. When I trained as an EN (Enrolled Nurse) in the early 1990's I was paid for the entire year, whether it was a study day or a working on the ward day. As a newly divorced mother with 3 young children I could not have done it if I had to pay for it instead of being paid. Having hands on training is best for good patient care. Years later so many times young RN's would come onto the ward doing a 'placement' and they would complain about having to do some basic nursing task, they would say that they are supposed to be giving medications and taking blood for tests not making beds and emptying bed pans. They are just in the job for the money and the 'prestige'.

No tablets in our house. I don't see a use for them as we have phones and laptops that do everything needed.
Our kids get their first laptop when they start High School (about 12yrs of age) and they get their first mobile phone when they turn 16 years old.
We have parental controls on their school laptops and monitor their phones until they turn 18.
It is far to easy to get addicted to technology and cyberbullying is so very real so limiting social media and some games can keep our kids safe.

From what I have heard on several podcasts, nothing is private anymore! It is a scary fact, and what is even more disturbing is the fact that people keep putting themselves in danger. Cell phones are a must when they don't need to be! Why don't people care? We lived without them just fine for centuries!!! Yes, they are convenient, but at what price? We accept any technology that is thrown at us, and we have no idea what the ramifications could be because we have no idea how they work! Those that do are speaking out, but no one is listening. Even when your devices are turned off, you are at threat! Where is this heading? There isn't much that the average person has to hide, so why track us? I think some of it is for merchandising and to monitor where we go and what places we frequent, but what about the government? I seem to have nothing they would be interested in so what do they want from us? That fact is scary! I hate cell phones because they have ruined our society. We can't even visit people without texting others while you are with them. To me, that is rude. If you want to talk and/or text to other people don't do it while you are spending time with me when I don't see you that often! Often times, people don't even hear what I say because they are on social media while they're here! Let's think about how unimportant that makes other people feel! Are those texts that important? I use a cell phone only because I travel alone and no one knows where I am. If I had an emergency, it could save my life. It isn't even turned on unless I need it! With all the crap that's going on, we need to get our heads in the places they need to be. Take care of your community. I love the Amish because they are there for their community and help each other out! They work hard, and we have become too lazy to even get up and turn the TV channel! Pathetic, aren't we? How are we going to handle what might be coming in this country? I wish I could say this on a public forum where it would be heard and make a difference. I know people are going to do what they are doing until they have no other choice and aren't prepared.

There is no time limit on grief. It takes as long as it takes. My mother died in 2014 and, while most of the time I'm fine, there are still moments when I'll just suddenly burst into tears. Mum lost twins seven years before I was born, yet she still got quiet, and a little down, when it would of been their birthday. I still see things when I'm in a store and think "Ooh, mum would love that", and then I remember.
Grief is a wound. It may scab over, even scar lightly, but it never fully heals. Sometimes it feels like it's forever since she died, other moments, it's like it was yesterday.
I find the run up to Mother's Day to be hard (not the day itself). All the advertising "Remember Mum this Mother's Day", I just want them to shut up. And the run up to Christmas... Both our birthdays are at the beginning of December (3 days apart), so that's hard. My uncle died 2 weeks ago, and his birthday is 2 days after Christmas, so this year is going to be hard.
My thoughts go out to all who are grieving.

I have recently become disabled with arthritis in my knees, back and most other spots. I walk with a walker and probably not far from being wheelchair bound. I am grossly overweight now I have found out that most places of business have sitting chairs with arm rests on them. So disabled people have problems sliding onto a chair with arms, let alone an obese disabled person. Sitting on a walker is not comfortable, and I think not meant to be for a long time. I try to do a pre check of any place i am going with hubby. He drives a power chair-he only has minimal use of thumb and forefinger in left hand so has a joystick control. But boy does he plough his way through a shop and if something is in the way the chair will get through...he doesn't care if his presence is made known. I hate scenes so run ahead making way. Can be v stressful. Some shops are so cluttered and aisles tiny..it sucks and makes me so mad. Esp shops such as 2$ shops- where we would like to go since we no longer have money- but they are terrible for w/chairs and walkers etc. Have complained to Mall but they said it was the shop owners responsibility. Sigh. We don't have an issue with seats as hubby has his w/chair at least. And if a seat is in the way at a cafe table he will nudge it out of the way with his w/chair. Going out is quite nerve-wracking. We never go into our previously loved 2nd hand shops- too cramped and crowded- and he drove out once with a clothesrack accidentally attached to the back of his headrest..sounds funny now but not at the time. Also he rammed into a giftcard carousel on purpose after the shop owner (another 2$ shop) told him off for accidentally knocking something in the over crowded store. He backed up his chair like a bull and started driving towards it..i knew he couldn't be stopped and i hid around the corner.

I have become more "Aussie" aware when purchasing food etc. I make a point of always buying Australian produce as I really feel that we have to support our local farmers, producers, retailers etc. I appreciate that this comes at a price is regard to cost and if you are a family with kids this might not always be possible. Buying Australian supports Australia and provides jobs, opportunities and wealth to Australians. The changing economic climate is putting strain on the household budget but hopefully early next year things will start to settle down with the economy. My spending habits have only changed in that UI am even more determined to support Australian businesses where I can.

Yes it has been another scare campaign with being out in the sun. I have very fair skin and turn into a lobster in half an hour.So I avoid the sun, go out early morning or late afternoon. I won't use sun screen, it's just another chemical. I do take vitamin D supplements on a daily basis. I've stopped listen to the news, it's just a bunch of articles that are geared to make people panic. I'm sick of being told how to live, what to eat, when to fart...to hell with it all.

What ever we do will not stop global warming! The earth is on an orbit in our solar system and has so far done 1% of this orbit which means our lifestyle is going to continue to change or die out as our universe expands and the planets move further away from each other. Governments wont tell their populations this as there would be worldwide panic. When the person isn't terminally ill, but push the button to end their life. The person is just sick of life. At the moment, they have to go overseas to do it. For some reason I don't, but agree with euthanasia by intentionally ending life to relieve pain and suffering.

Just sick of life is not fair, Kaz. In many cases it is severe mental illness. Does a person suffering from severe depression for decades not have the right to die? In the recent case, the Australian man was 103 years old. He was not in good health. I feel strongly about this as I worked for a quadriplegic, named Jo Ann Dolan, when I was younger. She fought for the right to die and an article appeared in "The Age". We have no right to interfere. I am sick and tired and people saying "people will kill their family for money". Stop hiding behind this BS as some people face suffering that we would not allow on a dog. They have the right to die and it is not your or my business.

If you want your children spoon fed to get good yr 12 results, then watch them fall on their arses at uni send them to a Private School. Also it’s the place to get the A class drugs coz mumsie and daddy are all cashed up and too busy runnning their empires to care. Teachers who really want to make an impact are in the public system.

At the moment we are all mostly at home. I try to walk each day. I have certain programs I like and most of the time on my computer. I might bake a cake another day I might vacuum. I frequently talk to family over skype. Talking with someone helps lift my mood. I try to talk to people while out it tends to help both of us even though brief. Usually dogs help. Quite a few years ago now, i noticed a neighbour's papers were still on the front lawn. He was an avid better, ex-jockey who loved to follow the horses and have a flutter. He never missed collecting his paper.
We notified the police who found him dead in his chair with the TV still on.
We hope he had a bet on a long shot and had won a large amount. We hoped he'd had a heart attack and died without pain due to the shock of winning. (We don't actually know how he died though.)
As for the current world situation.I have barely left the house for months now. There are too many self centered, selfish people living around here so going for walks in the neighbourhood or park does not leave me feeling safe due to other's behaviour.
I do not have skype nor zoom. I chat to friends most days by text/sms or online messenger services.
I have not had pets for over 20 years now and find that in itself very lonely.
I think it is important to stay in contact with neighbours, especially those who may not have access to family/friends or those who tend to not be very social.Even a little note in the letter box or a little posy of flowers from your garden left on their doorstep could brighten their day and make them feel not so lonely.

While we in Australia wonder if we dare make any plans, I really want to travel again as my time on this Earth is running out. Sadly since discipline was ruled a no-no by the politically correct part of society children and youths seem to do what they like, when they like, to whoever they like. Physically, things are not wonderful. The immobility and pain of arthritis must be felt to be believed. However, mentally, I feel so wise and grounded: an unerring sense of what matters more, what matters less and what matters not at all. Emotionally, I Iike being free of the stresses of the workplace, the tyranny of the power structure and its expectations. My time is largely my own and I revel in the liberty of it all. Yes, a little bit. The pension is enough to survive on but not much else. I think society does not properly respect what a lifetime is, nor does it respect the value of the volunteer work that many of the retirees do.

In some area's of Australia, esp the bigger city's, rental prices are now increasingly getting much worse. Our Pollies are sitting on their hands doing nothing about it. I believe rental prices should be really ...capped!. During Covid-19 last year, there was a moratorium on rental prices, for awhile, but we still have covid in Australia, so cap the rent! We need policies that put dollars into the pockets of people who cannot afford to buy their own home, so they have the money to do so. That way there would be little need for rentals, or for social housing either. My suggestion is to pay everyone a basic living wage (not means tested).

We've had pandemics before.....Spanish flu, the Plague, etc. It's social media that's making people crazy...... Have a camera aimed your way and all of a sudden your dumb idea or theory goes viral. Shut down social media and I think you'll shut down the crazies, the conspiracists and all those who have nothing better to do. Hell you never know, they might end up being...dare I say....a productive and contributing member of society or at least to their family.

I have always enjoyed poetry and in Australia we have some beauties. The Man From Snowy River is a classic but there are others I'm fond of. Two poems I don't like are number 1, The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, and number 2, The Kon-Tinki Expedition. I was enthralled with Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Elliot so got quite a thrill when I found they had all been put to the music of Cats the musical. Indeed, life would be dull without poems.
