Discussions of the day

In our Advertising...here on Rewardia and on TV and elsewhere...you will see a lot of heavily overweight models in skimpy clothes or in their underwear...some with missing limbs...and this is a celebration of our diversity...and how we should ALL be represented in advertising...a reflection of our society....OK...why are they ALL female?...ALL of them...where is the fat bald man in his underwear? The disabled male model?...why are they all well muscled...
John W 577766
As a fat bald old man, you do NOT want to see me in my underwear but good on you for championing this.

John Cleese recently pointed out that anyone who is REALLY good at what they do appear to think that only about 10 to 20% of all the other people who do that job are really any good ... be it doctors, plumbers, scientists, nurses, surgeons or chefs. If so, that is pretty scary. What do you think? Is that right in areas you have worked in?
BLACK LIVES MATTER
One, who is John Cleese....Two, my jobs called for civil service written exams based on experience or school - high school or college. Three, you had to score in the high nineties out of a hundred score - scoring a hundred was a perfect score. Four, the incompetents were weaved out - during civil service written exams. Five, over ninety-nine percentage of all the other people who do my job were really good. Last, over hundred thousand people who still do my job are still good at it!

Silence isn't a bad thing, though, and some people even enjoy it. It offers a chance to reflect and sort through thoughts. Actively and respectfully participating in a conversation takes energy even if you're only listening. Your partner, or anyone else, may not have the same conversational energy as you do. What do you reckon? Is it rude to not talk much?
BLACK LIVES MATTER
It will depend on your 'personal traits' are you EXTROVERT or INTROVERT....also your culture will determine HOW you respond in the scenario you described.... furthermore, other factors could come into PLAY!

My dream job as a child was to work in the vet department. Never thought I'd get there but qualifying as a vet assistant. What was your dream job?

I always wanted to be a Mum. In the process I have been a nurse, a psychologist, a teacher, a companion, a protector, a carer and so much more. It has been my greatest joy and sorrow, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It was just the ass I chose to be their father that was the problem.

So I'm currently pregnant with my third and some of my in laws insist they stay with us during the labour and after to meet the baby. Even though I thought u made it quite clear that's not happening. What you suggest I do? Kick them out and tell them to get a motel? Haha
Rosemary E 383382
Is this your first baby or do you have others you need somebody to help with the care of them? Having visitors is tiring so you may need to set a time limit for everybody, unless maybe they offer to help with various household chores and you may be able to grab some rest while baby is asleep. I'm sure things like doing the washing would be helpful even better if you can sort it to the point of which room it goes in.............I would be grateful for casual help if it is a c-section as there is a lot of things you are not supposed to do......... That's when you need a granny flat to evict them to.

In store, salesmen insist on explaining all the different settings of the latest machine. Mostly people don't use more than three anyway, but the one setting that's not there, and is necessary on any washing machine, a tissue detector. Paper tissues ruin so many washes, yet there is not one machine that can sense it and has a warning. If we can put a man on the moon, why can't someone design a washing machine that warns there's a tissue in the washing?
Sandra C 12043
How hard is it to check all pockets before you put things in the machine. It's called laziness. Or the alternaive is don't buy clothes with pockets, or stitch all pockets up so you can't put tissues in them.

Did you know in 2021 an italian ''artist'' sold an invisible statue for 15,000 euros? As you heard. The piece was literally a square of american tape stuck in the floor to remark the place where the statue was. But this is not the first time that this man did this. And he is planning to put seven invisible statues of his own all around the world cities. What do you think about this? Is this art? Is art really just a concept? You can sell a concept? Is this a real...
Robert F 1161011
I wouldn't call it art, and I wouldn't call it a scam, after all, any buyers can see exactly what they're getting.

Are the younger generations losing a lot of the jobs skills we used to have? I know the world is changing and becoming more tech-savvy. But we seem to be losing a lot of the skills that Baby Boomers used to have.
Susan 1441337
I think most of the jobs that that our know senior generation did have either been taken over by technology or moved to another country because they have cheap labour. I also believe it reflects on the quality of goods we receive from other countries. In turn all these products are garbage and thrown into the dump and we wonder why we have no room left to dispose of things. I feel old saying this but things definitely aren't made the way they used to be. I feel like we need to bring these jobs back to our own countries and stop buying off shore garbage. My dad said this many years ago before he passed and he was so right but yet our government keeps letting this stuff come in I'm sure these other countries are lining the politicians pockets. There's no jobs here for people that may not have the smarts to do IT stuff. I feel like we need to go back to the way things used to be. There's so many homeless people or people living paycheck to paycheck and the government doesn't care as long as they are getting richer. This is a sad sad world we live in imo

Why does this world need to use two types of calendars? In 1582 the Pope introduced the Gregorian Calendar, as the old calendar was incorrect by not having an allowance of a leap year & by 11 minutes in a year short fall. This was called the Julian Calendar. If the old calendar is short by a day & minutes, why does it still allow to be operated? To me, in my opinion, it is so confusing when you have 2 of everything. Like 2 Xmases, 2 New Years, 2...
Elizabeth T 396096
The answer to your question is religion.
Apart from the Greeks, all other Orthodox religion follows the old calendar for Christmas (the Greeks go with the Catholics on this one) but for Easter and New Year, all Orthodox religions follow the old calendar.
Imagine a world with no religion...easy if you try...no calendar to confuse us...no distorted facts to make you cry...

As I'm getting to the end of my life, of course, I look back through my past. Things I did, people I've met and the things that maybe I should have done.

These days, it's a great idea of starting a garden. Since with the cost of living, rising price of fruits and vegetables... I've started a garden, and it's turned out to be a great hobby. Time-consuming but rewarding. Who else has a garden to maintain? :)
JANET R 328390
I have a garden. Mainly flowers but I am growing a few beans, pumpkins, tomatoes, carrots and spring onions - at the moment. The main problem is always the bugs - snails, grubs etc - but I still like to grow them.

Recently I went out and met an acquaintance. She hugged me and chatted with me and my friend. Then openly informed me she has a sore throat and a fever. I have been informed she is a nurse. Early motor vehicles were powered by steam, and drivers needed to have somebody walk before the vehicle waving a flag, to warn others of impending danger. We have come a long way since then, and no longer need to waive those flags. Similarly, when Nuclear Energy was in its infancy there were risks and accidents, but whether you realise it or not, Nuclear Reactors are everywhere now - both on and deep down in every ocean, as well as in most major city...
Andrew C 287196
Nope! It's a massive disaster waiting to happen (as Russia found out, Japan nearly found out). It is also far more polluting then every other form of energy creation combined - nuclear waste takes millions, if not billions, of years to disappear and they have no idea what to actually do with it. There are no nuclear reactors in New Zealand and the government long ago banned nuclear-powered ships (including the US Navy) from even visiting here.

As we already know in every country around the world there are good and bad people. Although when we stop for a moment and hear the media such as the news or read newspaper all we ever hear is bad, bad, terrifying news which involves crime, Stabbings, shootings, theft, assaults., hurting innocent people, causing pain to families, causing injuries/ death, road rage.Running people over and leaving them on the road to die and not render help. Hurting our kids, the elderly especially that are more vulnerable and easy targets especially if they are blind or deaf. I think personally if society keeps going this way we will not even be able to step outside of our homes , because we are all too scared and feel we could be next targeted. We are all struggling, whether it's due to the cost of living, job, unemployment, or health, People's moods and mental thoughts do not give the right to anyone to take it out on others or hurt those who are innocent and destroy people's lives. There is not enough hard punishment in place.

Cheeky creatures, great and small, they do naughty things yet somehow always find their way back into our hearts ... What are some classic habits or stories you have?
TERRIE K
Soxy will bark at night if she hears a noise. I never allowed it because I couldn't see any reason for it. I have more tolerance to it now since she went blind. I just get up and tell her everything's okay in a gentle voice and she comes back in. She is the only one keeping me going so we look after each other. Even though she is now blind and a diabetic, we go for walks every day, she'll chase a ball inside the house if she can hear it bounce and she cuddles up with me when we want a rest. She'll always have my love.

Been with my husband 9 years, married for 4 years. My question is how do you keep the fun alive in your marriage. I'm finding specially with COVID, its been harder to try keep the fun/adventure alive. We don't go out as much as we used to due to COVID. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions, advice or tips to keeping things fun and new.

Be Honest with each other and never have any secrets between you. learn together new things and share your knowledge of things you already know. Going out is not everything in a relationship, there must be things you both enjoy doing together, today is the 3rd anniversary of my husbands funeral, he is my soul mate partner and lover, husband, We never went to bed angry with each other and always told each other we loved the other everyday, we had 21yrs together and only had 5 arguments in that whole time,(mental health did not help), I would have loved him to have been alive doing lockdown as we would have found lots to do together even if it was a walk around the block. Remember your love for each other.

At what age do you think is appropriate for youngsters to have their own (adult) personal computer, laptop, tablet (considering Parental Control)? My daughter got her first (adult) tablet when she turned 3 and then the first PC desktop when she was 6. All with parental control. She has limited screen time during the years. No tablets in our house. I don't see a use for them as we have phones and laptops that do everything needed.
Our kids get their first laptop when they start High School (about 12yrs of age) and they get their first mobile phone when they turn 16 years old.
We have parental controls on their school laptops and monitor their phones until they turn 18.
It is far to easy to get addicted to technology and cyberbullying is so very real so limiting social media and some games can keep our kids safe.

From inputting your data and signing up for a phone plan to handing over your number to a real estate agent, our personal details are collected, stored and shared on a daily basis. What happens when that data is breached, and our identity is stolen. Is privacy even possible anymore?
Carol S 657195
From what I have heard on several podcasts, nothing is private anymore! It is a scary fact, and what is even more disturbing is the fact that people keep putting themselves in danger. Cell phones are a must when they don't need to be! Why don't people care? We lived without them just fine for centuries!!! Yes, they are convenient, but at what price? We accept any technology that is thrown at us, and we have no idea what the ramifications could be because we have no idea how they work! Those that do are speaking out, but no one is listening. Even when your devices are turned off, you are at threat! Where is this heading? There isn't much that the average person has to hide, so why track us? I think some of it is for merchandising and to monitor where we go and what places we frequent, but what about the government? I seem to have nothing they would be interested in so what do they want from us? That fact is scary! I hate cell phones because they have ruined our society. We can't even visit people without texting others while you are with them. To me, that is rude. If you want to talk and/or text to other people don't do it while you are spending time with me when I don't see you that often! Often times, people don't even hear what I say because they are on social media while they're here! Let's think about how unimportant that makes other people feel! Are those texts that important? I use a cell phone only because I travel alone and no one knows where I am. If I had an emergency, it could save my life. It isn't even turned on unless I need it! With all the crap that's going on, we need to get our heads in the places they need to be. Take care of your community. I love the Amish because they are there for their community and help each other out! They work hard, and we have become too lazy to even get up and turn the TV channel! Pathetic, aren't we? How are we going to handle what might be coming in this country? I wish I could say this on a public forum where it would be heard and make a difference. I know people are going to do what they are doing until they have no other choice and aren't prepared.

Often we hear from others like: "I will be happy if I have some certain amount of money". Well, some amount can give us a comfortable life, but does it make us happier? If we had all the money I wanted, how would it be? Let's see at least three of the pros and cons: Pros: Money is monumental work that keeps me busy and productive. Money allows me to buy something I always wanted but could not afford. Money brings respect in society. Cons:Lack of family...

Whoever said money can't buy you happiness simply doesn't know 'where' to shop (LMAO)? However, I will admit that 'time' is more valuable than 'money'. You can get more money in life; you cannot get more time in life (a hard/bitter lesson for me to learn)!

Have you lost a loved one before? If so how long does it take before you can finally move on with your life? I lost my sister to suicide in september 2018. Coming up to 3 years since she passed. And a year ago on Xmas I wasn't quite ready to celebrate a Xmas yet. And still not. Because it's not the same without her. I was told by someone who was supposedly my friend that I'm being stupid and it's been over a year since she died and I should stop being so dramatic...

There is no time limit on grief. It takes as long as it takes. My mother died in 2014 and, while most of the time I'm fine, there are still moments when I'll just suddenly burst into tears. Mum lost twins seven years before I was born, yet she still got quiet, and a little down, when it would of been their birthday. I still see things when I'm in a store and think "Ooh, mum would love that", and then I remember.
Grief is a wound. It may scab over, even scar lightly, but it never fully heals. Sometimes it feels like it's forever since she died, other moments, it's like it was yesterday.
I find the run up to Mother's Day to be hard (not the day itself). All the advertising "Remember Mum this Mother's Day", I just want them to shut up. And the run up to Christmas... Both our birthdays are at the beginning of December (3 days apart), so that's hard. My uncle died 2 weeks ago, and his birthday is 2 days after Christmas, so this year is going to be hard.
My thoughts go out to all who are grieving.

Growing up, I had great girl friendships. In high school, when we discussed boys we liked, we cheered on each other's hopes to date said boys we individually liked. But there was that one girl friend, who would go after every boy we liked. She was beautiful, and really fun to hang out with, but I'd say this was a big no-no in our sisters' club. I've always been loyal to my friends and just to women in general. From my mother, sisters and girlfriends growing up...

Opinion is meant to be a personal expression, not intended to offend or influence, and does not deserve criticism but acceptance. But with the "cancel" mindset, why are we using opinion to push a thought or start a hate discussion?

Every time I check the balance of my retirement savings and kiwi-saver, they are heading south. I am over retirement age but still working, so find the current situation very distressing. Don't own a home and honestly wonder if I will ever be able to afford to retire. Considering closing my kiwi-saver and other retirement schemes and putting the money into a bank deposit account where it at least eRn something What are other people's thoughts?
Glenys H 310155
After reading some of the comments below, makes me realise How lucky I am. We own our home, I have a Dept of Vet Affairs pension, Hubby is currently on jobseeker kind of payment but is experiencing ill health (nothing major). We don't drink or smoke, we enjoy a few hobbies: I love crafts like knitting (make some presents or sell items) we both like reading (library) He is into golf (Budget allows a regular game) He likes jigsaws... had so many and they didn't sell on marketplace so we have started up a jigsaw exchange at a local hall. I guess that retirement comes down to if you are self funded or if you can manage on pension, have a good budget and stick to it.

I have recently become disabled with arthritis in my knees, back and most other spots. I walk with a walker and probably not far from being wheelchair bound. I am grossly overweight now I have found out that most places of business have sitting chairs with arm rests on them. I try to do a pre check of any place i am going with hubby. He drives a power chair-he only has minimal use of thumb and forefinger in left hand so has a joystick control. But boy does he plough his way through a shop and if something is in the way the chair will get through...he doesn't care if his presence is made known. I hate scenes so run ahead making way. Can be v stressful. Some shops are so cluttered and aisles tiny..it sucks and makes me so mad. Esp shops such as 2$ shops- where we would like to go since we no longer have money- but they are terrible for w/chairs and walkers etc. Have complained to Mall but they said it was the shop owners responsibility. Sigh. We don't have an issue with seats as hubby has his w/chair at least. And if a seat is in the way at a cafe table he will nudge it out of the way with his w/chair. Going out is quite nerve-wracking. We never go into our previously loved 2nd hand shops- too cramped and crowded- and he drove out once with a clothesrack accidentally attached to the back of his headrest..sounds funny now but not at the time. Also he rammed into a giftcard carousel on purpose after the shop owner (another 2$ shop) told him off for accidentally knocking something in the over crowded store. He backed up his chair like a bull and started driving towards it..i knew he couldn't be stopped and i hid around the corner.

I have changed my habit of spending money since the COVID-19 occurred. Life cost has become too high, and that makes me wonder how to save money and plan for my future. I have become more "Aussie" aware when purchasing food etc. I make a point of always buying Australian produce as I really feel that we have to support our local farmers, producers, retailers etc. I appreciate that this comes at a price is regard to cost and if you are a family with kids this might not always be possible. Buying Australian supports Australia and provides jobs, opportunities and wealth to Australians. The changing economic climate is putting strain on the household budget but hopefully early next year things will start to settle down with the economy. My spending habits have only changed in that UI am even more determined to support Australian businesses where I can.

Do you think in this day and age an "education" is the ticket to a better paying job? Or does your life experience (what you know) and who you know get you that better paying career?

This may be an American problem...I am not sure...should the only reason for your career be that it is "better paying"....I hope that at least some people devote most of their entire lives to a career that involves something they love and care about...or something that is vitally important or makes everyone else's world a better place...we can all make very important contributions and these should never be devalued

Laying in the sun for 10 -15 minutes a day is the best way to get enough. When ultraviolet rays hit your skin, that light triggers the production of vitamin D. Skin cancer should not be a risk for 2 to 3 times a week between 10 and 3 p.m. I have Irish heritage, so I am guilty of avoiding the sun. Psychedelic drugs have a long history in medicine and popular culture, and they re now being researched as possible treatments for mental illnesses and other debilitating conditions. But are psychedelics ready to go from underground to mainstream medicine? And what lessons can we learn from the strict regulation of medicinal cannabis?
Helen A 395807
Returned US soldiers with PTSD use such drugs whilst in session with a psychologist. Results are good. Why would big pharma offer anything better than nature? As for medicinal cannabis who can afford it? To all the judgemental straightjacks out there: The war on drugs started with racism. It was to harass Billie Holiday because she wouldn't stop singing 'Strange Fruit'. It has nothing to do with craziness or addiction. Ancient humans took psychedelics it is in our genes. What ever we do will not stop global warming! The earth is on an orbit in our solar system and has so far done 1% of this orbit which means our lifestyle is going to continue to change or die out as our universe expands and the planets move further away from each other. Governments wont tell their populations this as there would be worldwide panic. Our plants and animal life is dying out and we cannot stop it.Everyone conveniently forgets that we have had previous ice ages and the magnetic poles have also changed places throughout time. So for those who believe they can stop global warming go ahead and do your thing but it wont matter at all in the long term.

I'm curious about your views on elite private schools for the young ones. What would you say are the pros and cons of sending children to elite private schools? Would you do so if money weren't an issue?
Christine M 323842
If you want your children spoon fed to get good yr 12 results, then watch them fall on their arses at uni send them to a Private School. Also it’s the place to get the A class drugs coz mumsie and daddy are all cashed up and too busy runnning their empires to care. Teachers who really want to make an impact are in the public system.

Before I retired, a couple of people in my company retired before me ... and both promptly died ... people say it s your job, it s your life, it is important to keep busy/find a hobby (what?...or you will die?) Physically, things are not wonderful. The immobility and pain of arthritis must be felt to be believed. However, mentally, I feel so wise and grounded: an unerring sense of what matters more, what matters less and what matters not at all. Emotionally, I Iike being free of the stresses of the workplace, the tyranny of the power structure and its expectations. My time is largely my own and I revel in the liberty of it all. I have not been this relaxed and happy in decades!

Do you think the pension should be increased? have you ever witnessed an older person who is shopping for food and can't afford it so they buy a can of baked beans instead of meat and veg
Joe B 288252
Yes, a little bit. The pension is enough to survive on but not much else. I think society does not properly respect what a lifetime is, nor does it respect the value of the volunteer work that many of the retirees do.

In some area's of Australia, esp the bigger city's, rental prices are now increasingly getting much worse. Our Pollies are sitting on their hands doing nothing about it. I believe rental prices should be really ...capped!. During Covid-19 last year, there was a moratorium on rental prices, for awhile, but we still have covid in Australia, so cap the rent! What do you say?
Frank N
We need policies that put dollars into the pockets of people who cannot afford to buy their own home, so they have the money to do so. That way there would be little need for rentals, or for social housing either. My suggestion is to pay everyone a basic living wage (not means tested).

COVID vaccines necessary before travelling within Australia (US, wherever), and same to enter Australia ... Without quarantine before leaving the states or countries. What do you think?

personally i think its a waste of time,i read a coulpe of weeks ago our PM said once international borders are down when we are all vaccinated, and all travellers coming are vaccinated to expect 1000 cases per week,we have never had 1000 cases per week before,so does this vaccine work or not? apparantly it only lessons the symptoms if you do get it,allegedly

How long can you deep freezer food for? They say fish for one month. What the best things deep freezer and how long. Is better in fridge or deep freezer, is they even tips as well. Can cake be frozen or not.
Pato Lo Duck
Fish is difficult to assess, some fish get a bad taste after only a month or so and others seem to last for ever. I found a pack of seafood highlighter frozen in its original packaging in the bottom of my old freezer, that was 22 years old. I defrosted it and gave it a go, and it looked and tasted exactly the same as another one I had bought frozen from the supermarket still inside the use by date. You just have to experiment a bit to find what works. For instance bacon rashers get a funny taste after only a few months, but short cut bacon, without the fat lasts much longer before the taste changes.

Don't answer unknown numbers. Back during Covid it was rife. I turned the tables on scammers trying to sell a cure, I said I had created a cure with Maori herbs yada yada. I was so convincing they were asking if I could send some and were giving me their details! Kept me entertained.

It's a personal choice to book one in when buying a house (cost: $300-$1000 AUD) but are they worth it? I had a friend, needed to determine if he had termite & asbestos the P&B report said "no", sadly he later found out he had both. Other P&B inspectors overexaggerate petty issues just to cover themselves. Who's had similar stories?
Lachelle B
I have a building background so am the unofficial house inspector for family. A house is a long term investment so you need to check it out from a registered inspector (if they get it wrong, it's on them). It's like buying a car and going "she'll be right" instead of getting a mechanic to take a look.

Why is it when you're serving a customer in any type of industry, that they seam that they are always right? I believe in many industries they choose to ignore what is actually correct, so they don't have to deal with rudeness, loudmouths, tempered customers. This is wrong, who ever invented that the customer is always right is actually wrong. Lots of customers use this situation for their advantages. Many customers are wrong in what they're saying, as it can be proven on...

Is it ok for the public to go into shops and abuse the staff who are only doing their everyday job, especially when it comes to checking bags? My belief is that if you have nothing to hide, then what is the problem with having your bags checked? Swearing and calling the staff names is not necessary. If the staff are not helpful or are rude, then they should be reported to a supervisor or manager.

The cost of increased shoplifting could easily put a smaller company out of business. Get your bag checked like a good boy or girl

Many happy, long-term couples sleep separately and still maintain strong, loving relationships. The key isn't whether you share a bed it's whether you're prioritizing each other in other meaningful ways. What would you say? Do couples who sleep apart grow apart?
BLACK LIVES MATTER
Do couples who sleep apart grow apart? NO! Love 'might be' blind, but it turns out sleep isn't (deaf)! Hence, couples are opening their 'eyes/ears' to the benefits of separate bedrooms! While the idea of sleeping a part may seem counterintuitive to some(couples). Still, couples are finding that sleeping in separate bedrooms can lead to more restful night's sleep and a happier marriage (or relationship).

Children are staying home longer in their adult years, to leave for a bit then come back. We have charged rent as soon as they get jobs as well as make then help out around the house. BUT a lot of our friends seem to do none of this and think we are mean, doing it to our children. How does everyone else feel about this?
Lynne S 85901
Absolutely agree with rent being paid when children get a job. No value of money is learnt when parents keep paying expenses for their children. Also chores should be undertaken to help around the house - parents are not slaves.

Some sources suggest that we are the most productive within the first few hours after waking up, while other studies have found that peak productivity happens around lunchtime. This shows that some people can be productive right at the start of the day, but others need some time to dive into deep work. At what hour does productivity peak for you?
Andrew C 287196
Everybody is different ... some are early birds, some are night owls, and most a just normal daytime people. That's is simple common knowledge, and doesn't require any pointless, and expensive, studies that continually contradict each other.
There are also "studies" that "prove" growing kids' / teenagers' learning ability isn't as good early in the morning, so there is a theory that schools should start and finish later in the day, rather than 9:00am to 3:00pm / 3:30pm. BUT, some of those "studies" are more about trying to improve morning traffic congestion than actually anything to do with kids' learning ability.

We've all heard about the school lunch saga happening around the country, with some questioning the quality of the meals. Since kids can be picky eaters, it raises the question - what makes a great school lunch? Let's not debate why times are tough and these kids need school lunches, let's brainstorm! Share your favourite lunches from your school days or the go-to meals your kids love! Perhaps we can come up with a menu of crowd-pleasing school lunches...
writerrochelle
I graduated in 1965! In my senior year dad gave me a $5 a week allowance. Lunches were 50 cents, so I spent $2.50 a week on food. My favorite lunches were the roast beef and gravy over mashed potatoes, or the oriental vegetables over rice! The other $2.50 went for shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, soap (toiletries) because, since I had my own motel room (adjoining the manager's home/office), I had to buy my own things with my allowance. I even saved up and bought 3 paisley sack dresses (blue, green, brown) for $2 each! Did I ever get off the main subject! ;-D

From what I've read recently, the general consensus seems to be that people can usually not recall memories before around 3 years old. With the earliest memories generally between the ages of 3 to 6 years. Obviously there would be a lot of factors that could influence whether memories are formed retained & recalled.eg trauma etc. My earliest memory is not super clear, but I recall being prevented from entering the loungeroom & being really frustrated that I couldn't...

The remote work era is not ending, but rather evolving. Companies are experimenting with hybrid models to balance productivity, innovation, and flexibility. What would you say? Is the work from home era ending?
Paula J 395266
I hope it's ending because I'm tired of phoning companies and hanging on and on and when they finally answer the dog is barking in the background or something else is going on and you have the definite idea that you were hanging on while they had a cuppa or took the dog for a walk.

The research show no loss in productivity and better mental wellbeing. What would be your thoughts on four-day work week?
Christine 1448143
If you had Monday or Friday off, it would be like having a long weekend all the time. In medical professions and teaching professions, that would be hard to implement. I don’t think that a four day working week would work for everyone.

I have always said crooks are really dumb. To prove my point, people shoplift and them brag about it on social media. They also break the law in other ways and either brag to their friends and get turned in or involve people in the crime who can't keep their mouths shut. Crime doesn't pay any way you look at it because if someone does get away with it for a while they won't stop when they have enough because they will never have enough.

WHITE-COLLAR-CRIMINALS 'ripped' the world off for trillions of dollars - and 'none' of the money was recovered. Furthermore, in the late 19th century - ROBBER BARONS' stole and looted a country in broad daylight for decades - it is known as USA these days, and ROBBER BARONS are known as OLD MONEY these days. History has proved on numerous occasions that WHITE-COLLAR-CRIMINALS - always get away with the money and NEVER get CAUGHT! Other words - crime pays very WELL - lol!

A friend did this: She got a piece of paper and folded it in half and anytime she thought of a reason to have children, she wrote it down on one side. And anytime she thought of a reason not to have children, she would write it on the other. When she had her doubts about not having children, she would look at the list, and it would remind her that the decision she made not to have children was right for her. Any advice? Will I regret not having kids when I get older?
Debra Jay 1237276
I won’t comment on whether people should or shouldn’t have children. It’s very much a personal choice. I’m a Baby Boomer, now 66. I still clearly remember the day my in-laws visited, and MIL announced in no uncertain terms that couples who decided not to have children were the most selfish people in the world. I was 25 at the time, and had been married 6 years. We went on to have children, but I was disappointed that she had voiced her view in such a way, and created an “expectation” in our relationship. Children are everywhere (nieces, nephews, children living in care, neighbours, friends’ children ….. ), you can quite easily have children in your life that aren’t your own, and they are just as special.

Communication is key to handling various values in a partnership. There are many long-lasting relationships among people of differing political or religious viewpoints. You might give your marriage a chance to survive if you can properly discuss and disagree. What are your thoughts? How do those who are married work through their differences?

Tipping or giving tips over here in New Zealand, is not considered a common thing. It's belongs as part of the america culture, & over in the US. Sure if some people wish to tip alright, not for me. They'll see I like their business if they get repeat business from me or not.
28-Jul-24

That's a personal choice, but don't cut your spending so far that you make yourself uncomfortable or miss out on the experiences you've always dreamed about. You certainly shouldn't be turning down the heater or putting off a roof repair to save money so that your kids have more to inherit. What are your thoughts? Should you spend your child's inheritance?
Janice S 76330
An inheritance is a gift, it's not something that is owed to you. To all those people who are waiting for their parents to die so that they can have the money that their parents worked hard for, I say: Work hard and earn your own money! A survey was taken, (not sure which country) and the greater proportion of the people surveyed were; 'waiting for their inheritance'.
I wonder if those same greedy people would be happy to scrimp and go without, just to save money to give it to their children? Probably not!
If our parents are fortunate enough to be financially secure after they retire they should be allowed to enjoy what is theirs, after all they don't owe us anything, in fact we owe them.

How would you feel if you went to the eye doctor and found out that for 14 years this doctor has been hiding the fact from you that you have cataracts? You have been having vision trouble all this time and have been depending on others for transportation because your vision is not good enough to drive. Now you find out, and he is still trying to talk you into glasses, even though glasses make everything seem dark. Would you be angry? Would you sue the Dr?
Linda C
What sort of doctor would do that. I was told I had cataracts for years but not bad but eventually he told me it was time to get the eyes operated on. I was informed all the time. I have an eye test every year and am sent a reminder. I am due for one now.
I think sometimes one has to change their doctor or medical person just to keep them honest and yourself in the know. My sister was very ill and her doctor for 10 years kept saying it was nothing. She passed due to cancer that has spread through her body and this so called doctors lack of care.
I always say get a second or even third opinion and if you still think something is wrong keep going. Many doctors fob women off as being hysterical, menopausal or whatever. Do not just accept their opinion. Investigate, educate yourself as much as possible and do not be afraid to ask the questions and demand answers. Of course, no need to be rude or abusive.

Stay in school would be my first advise. Everything after that flows from that 'simple' decision. As with any decision, the fork you take in the road, follows from that one decision. Stay away from the alcohol and the drugs of course is always good advice.

They are pretty spoilt children, courtesy of wonderful grandparents, who do so much for them and absolutely adore them.

I was just wondering how many other people out there have no parents left, and your siblings do their own thing with their own families on holidays, and it leaves you with your own family and no interaction with others, really. No closeness like when you were a child, or the feeling of being needed. I myself feel so lonely and so depressed during every holiday. I don't know how to get past it. But it seems my family split when my parents died.

death, unfortunately, does separate some families we lost 5 people over the COVID-19 years, it does make it tough and I feel for you, people I think avoid you because they have no idea what to say or how to act, distance creeps in and routines change leaving people behind, can i suggest writing letters, making phone calls and let your family know where you are, how you are, hopefully, things work out and new beggings can start I wish you well, i have been through it , I see my brother weekly now instead of every Christmas, because of phone calls sending letters and we have a new beginning he was going through similar troubles when his wife died but is reinvigorated. I hope you have an ok easter and again if you can't call write a letter, even if you don't send it it will serve you well

Appetite and hunger can both be triggered by many things that include sight, smell, and changes in the digestive system. However, your appetite can be influenced by things like boredom or undefined thirst that may lead to creative thoughts. What do you reckon? Is it better to ignore cravings or to eat in moderation?
Judy T 470524
Everything in moderation is good. Sometimes we crave certain foods because our bodies need some nutrients that they contain .

In some cases, though, a relationship might not have the potential to be rekindled. In these instances, it can be healthier for each partner to focus on themselves and move on. We all have individual lessons to learn in our life journey and sometimes it just isn’t the right time for a relationship, and as noted by several of you, love can be rekindled. Scammers are white-collar-criminals. White-collar-criminals ARE NOT severely punished as blue-collar-criminals in the USA (where I reside)! Are scammers going to be a regular problem going forward - YES (there are numerous ways to get anyone personal data)! The only person who can make it more difficult - for scammers to steal your money - is you. I do not use credit cards or my bank's debit card to pay bills online or offline. I do not use my bank's checks (since your account number and routing number is at the bottom of the checks - which is all the info a scammer needs to hack your bank account). I pay all my bills by USPS's money orders which are expensive - but they come with two receipts. I use cash for daily purchases. My credit score sucks - because I don't have any debt - but I have never been scammed/hacked (it
is a constant juggling act to keep your monetary info security). Furthermore, I have a landline phone with twenty-first century technology but does not have an internet connection - my landline phone cannot be hacked! Other words, you have to make your digital footprints as small as possible - so a scammer will not (hopeful) notice your digital footprints online or offline.

Everyone is complaining that the cost of power is increasing, and they want us to switch to all electric, cars, home heat etc. Where is the infrastructure for all the demand? They say, cut your consumption, we will help you save money... however the price is increasing even if you are using less. These companies never do anything for the little guy. They still have to pay their CEO the big salary. What do you think?

Sorry this has nothing to do with power bills but I am so livid right now. I honest hope the bleeding hearts are happy with them selves. I hardly watch the news because it's all doom and gloom. Last nights head line was 70 y/o woman was stabbed in front of her 6 y/o granddaughter in Northern Brisbane shopping centre. The thugs wanted and stole her car, she obviously put up a little bit of a fight so they stabbed her to death. I honestly hope the family sues the government and the immigration department for allowing these criminals into Australia. Do you feel safe here any more? I certainly don't and why because it keeps happening time and time again. Wake up and stop allowing people like that here. I also like a bit of both. Trouble is Councils are approving these cement properties because they make a lot of money in revenue. One house, one block, front and back garden with garage turns into 3-4 properties with just a garage and not enough room to "swing a cat" so to speak. I feel claustrophobic just thinking about it. When you have very strict parents/carers, are you making your children more rebellious? I believe yes, because the children eventually get really tired of the way you are with them. You need to be calm & explain the reason you chose for your child, in doing something in the way you want. Perhaps the child would understand more & if they state another way, why don't you compromise to solve the issue in a better way. I find being too hard on them, it leaves them with wrong...

The last few weeks, I have been in discussion with a tradie with regards to removing trees and moving a shed to the back fence. We had not finalised anything because of the situation of the shed. The next time I talk to him, he tells me he went on my property and chopped all my trees and moved the shed slightly which is not what we had discussed. The shed was to go at the back. They never gave me the date or when they could do the job. It was never finalised. They...

It seems the tradie merely quoted and had not been given the go ahead.
If there was no agreed price, I certainly wouldn't pay. from the facts you've given there was never a contract, verbal or otherwise.

Does anyone still write in cursive, and if you were taught cursive handwriting, when did you go to school? I'm curious to know when it started to get phased out, as I was taught to print my letters in primary school in the 00's. What are your thoughts on how handwriting is now, especially with digital technology becoming more commonplace? Or how do you think handwriting etiquette evolve over time?
Victoria 1304258
Yes, I still write in cursive & lots of people have told me they love it. I know a lot of kids don't learn it nowadays, but my grandchildren go to Christian school & they were taught.

My mum was a shorthand typist at Dunedin hospital She also worked on the telephone exchange then she became a bank teller which will probably become a thing of the past soon too My grandfather worked on the railways in the King country and enjoyed reminiscing his young days What job titles do you know of that don't exist in 2021

What about the dunny man, before the days of sewerage. Yes, I am that old. I have a faint memory only of those days. The man who used to bring ice for ice chests in the days before refrigerators.

NZ had recently General elections. Turns out, similar as previous years, not everyone go to vote. Yet there are lots of people who complain afterwards. I always say election is the time when people actually do have a 'voice' and might be able to make a difference in their country, but about 20 to 25% will choose not to vote. I bet those are the people who complain the most. Do you think elections really should be compulsory or leave the citizens the option to choose?
Beverly I
No voting should not be made compulsory. People should be allowed to chose.Wether to vote or not. If they don't vote they shouldn't complain

With the cost of living being so much more higher these days, what's a good (or realistic) amount of extra curricular activities kids should be doing, or how much are people spending or willing to spend of said activities? (Sport, music instruments etc)
Simba 1006243
We go hiking and often see parents take the children of all ages hiking. It is a great family time and extra curricular activities for them

I have wondered what the reasons behind why I meet more women who start menopause younger and younger. I started just after turning 30. It seems that there is more to this hormonal change in our community of women than meets the eye. Wondering if our meat we are consuming are filled with growth hormones given to the animals before they reach out supermarkets and how it is affecting us in the long run.

Fertility in both males and females is dropping at a quite surprising rate...it might even be as high 5% or more per generation...I suspect the planet has had enough of us....

Have you ever argued with a friend where you decided to end the relationship and all of a sudden they start posting on Facebook about relationship experts and the subjects are always about what you did wrong? I unfollowed this person and haven't contacted them since. What would you do? Did I do the right thing?
Holly 1292607
Going through this currently after 40 years of friendship. I'm heart broken. A "best" friend of mine brought another into our argument and now both are pissed at me. Unreal

I kept wondering what would happen if there were no electronic devices for the young kids of today, (10 and under) so my son and daughter-in-law tested the theory to see what would happen, so for a complete day they took away the devices (did not charge) and the TV was not working (took it off the main plug). At the beginning they were angry, and it did take about an hour, but they all went outside, played any thing and everything they could find, some cricket, riding...

We need to go back to basics and take technology out of our lives. Only use when we have to. So much to enjoy in the outdoors. Well done Kat, I hope a lot more people heed your comments.

My husband s co-worker recently had a stroke and he is only in his 30s. He is still suffering from the post-stroke effects but started coming back to work full time because he is the breadwinner for his family and his kids are still very young. He knows the stress from work is probably the trigger for his stroke, but what other options does he have? One can argue that your health is more important, but there are bills to pay. It is easier said than done to just change the job....
Carol S 657195
In 1989 when I became unable to work due to a nervous breakdown, my husband kept telling me I couldn't quit my job because we would lose our house. I realized that, and I worked and worked until one day, I was on my way to work, and I just knew I couldn't go to the office one more time. Therefore, I had a complete breakdown, and I haven't been able to work since because of anxiety and depression. These are very difficult disabilities to prove. However, with a lot of determination, I did manage to get retirement Social Security disability. It took several months, but I had enough vacation and sick days saved to keep my paycheck coming until the disability kicked in. It was so difficult, and I have not recovered from it. I had a wonderful government job that I loved, but my boss pushed and pushed until my brain completely shut down. I could not even comprehend anything my husband was telling me, and I cried constantly! I spent 3 months in the Psych Center! Finally, they let me go because I was better, but nothing more could be done for me at that time. I tried to sue the government for causing this, but I lost my case. They blamed it on the fact that my father had died during that same time period. I was not permitted to take time off to even visit Dad in the hospital where he was dying a painful death from bone cancer! I regret that to this day! We were in the process of building a new office building and no leave was allowed. I wish I had stood up to my boss, but I just couldn't! I still have not come to terms with how he treated me. He even made negative remarks about women, and he made no effort to hide that the men had more respect that the two secretaries! I wish that had been brought up at the hearing, but my attorney prohibited me from mentioning certain things. You can't beat a government attorney. They play so dirty. They even said that I married my husband, who was older than me, as a father figure. That was so not true! I knew this man for 15 years before we got married, and I never believed Dad was going to die. I could NOT accept that! Thanks for letting me vent. I hope it helps. I still want to talk to my boss and tell him how he ruined my life. My job was my pride. After that, I lost my self-esteem. I realize now that who I was shouldn't depend on the job I have. It is defined by the person I am, and I'm proud of who I am now! I hope this helps someone. Don't let people define who you are. They don't know you!!! God Bless you all!

Once we collected and signed for our pay packets at a pay office. Now we have given, the control to banks that are closing, and for those whom don t trust ATMs and computers, how are they going to survive and how are they going to be able to pay their bills. Out of control Banks, with our money? Does anyone in your family struggle to with this?
Paula J 395266
You have no-one to blame but yourselves. You vote with your feet and if you don't like what you are offered then take your business elsewhere. The banks introduced ATMs' and you queued to use them not giving a wit about the teller whose job it replaced. You were offered internet banking and you were in a hurry to sign up for it, once again replacing people. Then it was the banking app and use your mobile all the while doing people out of a job. Branches closed and ATM's were removed, do you now why? Most ATM's are owned by people who buy them as an investment, they cost money to own because the Reserve Bank charges people for the money they put into ATM's so when you paid at Woollies or Coles with your phone and took out cash the costs of keeping ATM's was more than the earnings so they were removed. Don't complain, don't whinge because you brought this upon yourself. I don't have a smartphone, I don't trust them, especially with my personal banking. Apps aren't as secure as websites, not your side but the other end and people you interact with. I still use the website but my bank is trying to close it and push me off onto an app of course because it's cheaper, but I'm not going without a loud noise. Not everyone wants to bank online, some people forget how to do things online as they age, some people aren't as capable as others to go online or on an app so Banks should be somewhat responsible for pushing everyone online where they get ripped off or scammed. It's too late now the horse has bolted, you chose a machine and technology over a person. I'll use technology when it's a benefit but I MUCH prefer to deal with a real live person, I queue at the checkout to keep the checkout person employed and I like to shop in stores to keep the sales people employed. Any business that tries to push me into having a smartphone I ditch because I don't want one or the apps they insist I need. Every action has consequences and not using people results in no people being required. Think about that the next time you use serf service.

I think everyone's heard the saying, "Once a cheater, always a cheater", but is that really the case? Could someone be genuinely sorry and really mean it and be given another chance by their significant other, or would that significant other be making a mistake to believe them and should kick them to the curb?
Norma
Most people who cheat are narcissists that think they will never be caught. When found out they first go on the offensive and say it's all in your mind, then when given incontrovertible proof they blame you for your inadequacies or say it was a mistake and they'll never do it again, which is a lie. They just think next time they'll be more careful. I was married for 50 years and he cheated for most of that time. I never told anyone and had no support, until my daughter picked up the other line at home and caught him talking to his bit on the side. She supported me and gave me the strength to dump his a$$. He was a bully and treated me like his maid not an equal. I should have told someone sooner.

Criticism is envy, right? I get criticised so often by my "friends". I just really don't understand why people do this. It really brings me down. No matter what I say to them. It's outta envy, right?
Teri 1282723
Call it envy if you feel better, but these people are not your friends. You may hang out with them regularly, but that's not the definition of friendship. Your true friends are those around you who build you up, care about your well-being, want you to succeed in life, like to be around you and be affectionate with hugs and laughter - and you're a friend if you do these things for them. You want to share good times but you're there for each other in the bad. It's a form of love that you have for your friends and envy has NO PLACE in friendship. Breezy123, I think you're likely still quite young and you will learn with age and experience what I'm talking about. You can't possibly feel good about yourself or confident when these 'friends' are criticizing you. Please, for your sanity and self-esteem, find new people to hang out with.

What's a TV series you watched that you found really gripping/can't wait til the next episode?
MacAddict
The more channels you have, the more you watch. The more you watch, the less time you have for exercise. The less you exercise, the less fit you become (and possibly fatter.) And more unhealthy.

I've seen every age of child up to I'd say 7yrs, nursing discreetly or being handed a bottle or pacifier. Do you think there's a "reasonable" age that an infant/ toddler should be weaned off all of these ways to feed or get comfort? Or is this strictly a woman's choice, and we should respect that choice and not get involved with our own opinions?
Christine M 323842
How about we don’t look for reasons to judge other mothers. It’s a bloody hard job. When children are little you are doing the best that you can, while the world looks upon in judgement, and people feel they have the right to approach you and tell you what to do. WRONG!!!
We need to support mothers and the choices that they make. Different families, different children, different values, different circumstances, different cultures will all lead to different choices.

Some love the idea of going to the buffet - big variety of food and eat as much as you can. Others think it s a waste of money because they are not big eaters. So, what if it is a gathering where everyone has to pay for their own, do you think it s a good idea to have it at a buffet restaurant?
Roy R 1009866
The benefits of eating at a buffet are outweighed by the downside. The most important one is your health. Most of the people using those common utensils may, and only may, be clean but it doesn't take many unsanitary people to make all of the common utensils dirty eventually likely getting into your mouth and body.

During these days I noticed that the economy in the country has entered a state of inflation, and prices are constantly rising, especially the energy sector, According to my follow-up to local and international news, I realized that global economy has entered a critical stage. What are the steps that may limit the deterioration of the economy in the country? What did you do during the last period to maintain your financial balance ?
Michelle S 553303
This inflationary rise is by design in order to crash the economies of the world and destroy the fiat money system so that the WEF can bring in their Fourth Industrial Revolution and confirm their "Great Reset" which will cause a completely digital economy to replace the present democratic countries and bring in the NWO. Anyone who hasn't been paying attention to these psychopaths ought to because the end game is to cause a global famine that would lead to their being able to reduce global populations by more than 2/3rds and get rid of us "useless eaters"! The time is rapidly approaching when families will have to make a choice between paying the mortgage or rent or eating. It is THAT serious. But TPTB don't want riots on their hands so they have already destroyed the health of billions around the globe with their deadly shots, falsely labelled "vaccines" and in a 12 month period from, I believe, February 2021 to February 2022 the US suffered as many deaths in the working age population than died in the entire Vietnam war. The millenials are dropping like flies especially from cardiac issues. This is an absolute fact but you won't hear it on MSM. The hyperinflation will render the currency of virtually every country useless just like In Venezuela and Zimbabwe and Yugoslavia in the 1990's. The war in Russia and Ukraine is merely a distraction and someone to blame for this manufactured shortage and supply chain issues, but they have existed for far longer than just a few months. If you can afford to stock up on foods like beans, grains, pasta's and tinned foods do it IMMEDIATELY. Same applies if you have the capacity to pay extra on your mortgage or rent. A global crisis far worse than the Great Depression is coming and by later this year even MSM won't be able to hide it. Mock if you like but I have plenty of other things to do rather than spread lies on a survey platform. It's going to be HORRIFIC!

When I was younger I thought when I get older that is a good time and I'll get freedom to do whatever I want. But now I got freedom but I want my family to guide and motivate me to be on track. Now I know family members importance. Is anyone feels the same? I think when we have somebody by our side we don't know their importance and as soon as we lose them we desperately want them.

If you could go back in time, what is one thing you would do differently? Or what is one thing from the future you would take back with you? Or what is one thing you know or have knowledge of that you would take back with you that would benefit you or others?
Delle
The 'Butterfly Effect' is real, and going back would be extremely dangerous. Change one thing and you will mess up many more. I wouldn't if I were you.

People are always fond of hearing the word being rich or becoming rich. So, for us to be rich, we need to have a lot of wealth. But, the question is, how much wealth do we need to be rich? The answer is different for everyone, and it really depends on your lifestyle and needs. Some people are happy with two cars and an apartment in an expensive neighbourhood while others want a private jet and a villa in Monaco. So how does one become rich? The answer is...
Tom S Qld
When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost.
Everything in moderation, and there's a perfect balance in this life if we can find it.
