Discussions of the day

We all know that obesity has becoma a worldwide problem. Now doctors are calling it a disease. But is it really? Or is it just a personal failling?
Carolyn H 146141
Try a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. It's not a disease for most people and they should stop wasting doctors' time and medical resources that are needed by people who genuinely need them.

How much of your decisions are governed by your ego? Do you make more decisions that are based on the approval of others or do you make more decisions that are truly meaningful and purposeful to you? Do you have a good balance of both perhaps? Our ego helps to establish our identity and inspire us though having an over-inflated ego can hold us back. Sometimes a slice of humble pie, though feeling harsh, can teach a good lesson or help us realise how much our ego drives us and...
Barbara H 1073102
I don' think ego involves making decisions to seek the approval of others. Quite the opposite actually.

I wish kids would realize their parents were once their age, and there is no manual on doing the right or wrong thing, because when it comes down to it, we are all learning how to deal with and take care of things. So kids, stop blaming your parents for what is wrong with your life. We are just trying to help in the best way we can, even if it turns out to be right or wrong

my dad taught me be the reason someone smiles, and everything will look after itself, I believe that to be true I've had plenty of ups and downs[ who hasn't ] I live day by day week by week but I am extremely happy, I teach my grandkids the same create a smile where ever you can and be the best person you can be no matter the situation so far that is working out ok

I have recently gotten into researching on if different types of aliens are currently watching or amongst us on Earth. I would love to know your opinions on if this is true and if so are there any key particular locations or countries of which they are targeting more to others?

In 1994, 62 children ages 6 to 12 outside their school yard in Ruwa, Zimbabwe. Some of the children saw one or more silver craft land on a nearby field and some of the children claim one or more creatures dressed in black approached and communicated telepathically an environment message to them. The children who saw them drew the same drawings of the creatures. This is a true story. Believe it or not.

As people age, their world can often more focused on their own immediate needs, health and daily well-being. Being a parent assuming my daughter as an adult, she is capable and managing her life just fine. She does not have children or husband. Just taking care of me as much as possible. Am I selfish?

It’s strange this discussion coming up. My mum died last Sunday. I’m not after sympathy, but I know people care. It was a blessing for her as she was very poorly and it was a huge relief to see her suffering end. About nine years ago I answered my mum back for the first time in my life. She would not recognise my first grandchild as family because she was fostered and in her words not mine “ she isn’t blood”. This hurt very much, this beautiful little girl was my first grandchild and I love all my grandchildren equally. I kept my distance for a while but got abusive phone calls from my brother and nearly had to take out a restraining order. My mum changed her will, and I had no say over her health as she got older and deteriorated. She was put in a nursing home, which was very comfortable but she kept asking me what had happened to all her belongings. I didn’t know. I visited her and we spoke and I love her. My psychologist said I would never get an apology for the hurt she caused me but I forgave her. Sorry for the ramble but thank you for letting me write.

How do you feel when you go shopping at grocery stores or dept stores, and you are asked to round up a few dollars to support a charity in that area. I find that if I am in the same store multiple times a week, it feels uncomfortable saying no over and over again, especially if I have already donated the first time they asked. I hate having to explain that I have already donated.
Darren S 116121
i always say no and that maybe your company can put some of their megaprofits in instead of making it look like they have donated when its the shoppers have

There was a time in professional sports when the umpire/referee made a decision, it was accepted as final without question. Errors were made, but were acknowledged as part of the game. Today, almost every decision is referred to an authority away from the playing field. This not only interrupts the play of the game but calls into question the integrity of the field official.
JANN R
I think it is needed as some are hard to see and it makes the decision easyer to make and is a more fair way

Coming from a very large family, it becomes a big question when Christmas rolls around as to who to invite for Christmas dinner. I usually decide on it based on who gets along with whom. Then I don't hear the end of it when I don't invite certain members. I decided not to put on the Christmas dinner for the past two years; it didn't feel like Christmas without family around on Christmas day. Do you experience any of this? What would you do?
P F
My family is large as well. What we do is meet at the local park, lake or nearby beach. Everyone that wants to come brings a main and a dessert to share at a communal table. The children are catered for by water activities and a playground. Adults mingle with whomever they want. At the end (most of it is paper plates\plastic cups) cleaning up takes seconds. The burden of catering is not left to a single person. And our rule is no presents. Having fun, bringing food, participating in activities...that's the present.

Recently our cat was mauled by a savage dog even though it was on a leash outside our house. Its owners had no control. I have never witnessed such torture and was devastated, `The cat was so injured, it has to be out down. We had no success on insisting that the dog should be put down to prevent other incidents. Next time it might be a child. Surely, there should be more restrictions on such animals, \What do you think?
Karen S 841350
Yes, I agree, dogs with those killer tendencies towards cats often go onto to attack people, have seen this many times when working with council dog pound. Often they can not be rehabilitated and have to be euthanised, sad for all concerned. More restrictions, visits are needed for dogs such as these and this savage dog that mauled your cat on a lead is a public safety issue. More than often it is the owner at the cause of the problem with encouraging aggression and non socialisation of dog at fault. There are alot of people involved in dog fighting now and these people couldn't be trusted to look after there dogs and need these animals taken off them

For me, it is completely normal for someone to choose to stay single forever. People have different life goals, values, and preferences, and for some, being single may provide the freedom and independence they desire. What would you say? Is it normal to want to be single for the rest of your life?
P F
I am single and have been all my life. I enjoy it. It's given me time for self growth. Most of my friends got married within 2 years of leaving high school and took any low paying job they could to pay the bills. I became a teacher and travelled all over the country I live in. I play several instruments, write songs and have a band that we preform at local events. I own my own house, 2 investment properties, a government and a private super, shares and a good size chunk of cash in the bank. Being single DOESN'T mean being lonely. I have great friends and have had relationships along the way. The freedom I have to do anything I want whenever I like is amazing. I don't need to ask anyone's permission to do anything I feel like doing at the drop of a hat, and money is never a problem. When I look at my friends and how deeply they are in debt to the almighty credit card I thank God I'm single. And as far as never having children...well I'm a teacher that is surrounded by children and I have 6 nephews that think I'm the greatest uncle ever due to the gifts and adventures we have had in the past. And still having adventures today with their children. Life is good.

I feel that if done safely there should be no issue but a mandatory licence and helmets would be needed along with an age requirement to make it safe
Vicki
Hi David thanks for this discussion topic. Hospital emergency departments and aquired brain injury wards are testament to people either not using them safely and responsibly, or being injured through no fault of their own.
Road users with licenses see first hand people flouting rules including those riding e scooters or e bikes. These machines can travel up to speeds in excess of 40km per hour on footpaths and roads. Not in favour of them.

What are some of the things you do to save money in your household? Examples of what we do: - Use clothes line - Minimal usage of 1 time use items (paper towel, plastic wrap, tin foil, sandwich bags etc.) - Bake own snacks instead of store bought (cookies, muffins, cakes, pies etc) - Make own bread, tortilla shells, crackers etc - Home cooked meals instead of pre cooked/prepared or take out - Grow and preserve own food - Compost to create own soil - Shop...

- pay cash for groceries; withdraw your budget so can't go over it by paying card. You also don't get surcharges doing this.
- 10c refund on drink cans etc, save it. I'm at $400 in just over a year doing this
- buy 2nd hand

Sometimes people wonder whether it is always best to tell the truth, or if small white lies are acceptable in certain situations. For example, telling someone you like their cooking even if you don t, or saying you are busy when you just want time for yourself. The discussion is: Is it better to always tell the truth, or are white lies sometimes okay? Why do you think so?
LA
White lies are basically social bubble wrap—sure, the truth is inside there somewhere, but nobody needs to get hurt in the process.

Mom and Dad passed away. Eventually, the property had to be divided. We did everything honestly and above board. Everything was great until, my Sister in the middle decided to sell her piece of property for a quarter of a million dollars. Then she put part of the property that was mine, that I made to my Son, as my Dad wanted to be done in the sale with hers. Now, we have a problem. We moved to our small town 14 years ago. We were shocked at how many things in this town are run on volunteers. The CFA (fire brigade), SES (emergency service), They are in most Australian towns, so no surprise there. But the local hall has a volunteer committee who look after it, cleaning renting it out etc. The local show is run by volunteers. We also have 2 CWA branches (Country Women's Association) a Rotary Club, a Masonic Club,...

In my town, the only thing run by volunteers is the gossip network—and trust me, they’re very efficient.

If you were to die tomorrow, would you have enough funds to cover the cost of your funeral? At the moment I am putting away money weekly in a funeral fund and hopefully by the time of my death there should be enough to cover my funeral, so my son doesn't have that expense. I am interested to hear of other people's plans about what/or not they are doing to be prepared for that time

One of the things I miss most about school days is the sense of routine and shared experiences. Every morning started with familiar faces, hurried greetings, and the rush to beat the bell. Between classes, we shared jokes, snacks, and secrets that felt like the center of the world. Even the most ordinary days standing in line for lunch, group projects that turned into laughter sessions, or the quiet moments before an exam now feel golden in memory. School was more than just...

I attended segregated public schools (kinder garden to the 12th grade) in the USA. My segregated public schools' years are not pleasant. Hence, I 'rarely' reminiscent about my segregated public schools past because I do not have one positive memory! Also, during my public-school years I resided in segregated neighborhoods. Yet, I did learn one cold, hard, ugly fact (from segregation): THE UNITED STATES HAS NEVER BEEN A DEMOCRACY.

The cost of living in Australia is among the highest in the world, mainly because of expensive housing, services, and everyday essentials. Housing is the biggest factor, with rents and property prices in cities like Sydney and Melbourne ranking among the most costly globally, often reaching $600 $750 or more per week. Utilities such as electricity, gas, internet, and phone bills also add significantly to household expenses. Groceries are expensive too, with a family s...

The biggest reason why getting back together with an ex doesn't work is if your relationship patterns don't change. If you and your ex are getting back together in the same relationship, with the same mindset, the same insecurities and the same issues; then reconciliation will probably not work. What is your experience? Why does getting back with an ex never work?
Lachelle B
Never get jealous of an ex with a new partner....I was brought up being told that you always give away your used toys to the needy.

Choosing between being born in 1975 or 2025 depends on personal preferences for societal conditions, technological advancements, and life experiences. Would you rather be born in 1975 or 2025?
Aileen 1666161
1975 because today 2025 is too confusing right is wrong, left is right, we don’t see eye to eye about anything that’s happening in the crazy world.

We are elderly and ill, and need to pay people to work for us. It seems no one wants to work anymore. We pay cash money. I don't know what is so difficult about stacking wood up for someone for winter. Every time the guy says he will show up, he is a no show. I fired him once, then giving him one more chance, we will know tomorrow if he will show up this time.
Rob G 106430
The irony is that this current generation never stops to think about who is going to do the work for them. I mean, they don't want to work becasue they just deserve to be given everything, so why would anyone else want to?!? We're all now paying for a welfare system that has created generations of slubberdegullions.

We often talk about finding ourselves, being true to ourselves, or losing ourselves in something greater. But what if the "self" isn t something we discover or protect what if it s something we invent? Some neuroscientists and philosophers suggest that the idea of a stable, unified self is a useful illusion a narrative our brain constructs to make sense of our thoughts, emotions, and memories. From childhood, we weave experiences into a story, and that story becomes our...
Thomas Canada
We are born with a self because we have a personality right from birth. That self, like other beings, evolves and develops over time through various experiences as well as our own genetic predispositions. Just as the self can expand over time, it can also deteriorate just like organic and non-organic matter. Does this mean that the self is just an illusion? Absolutely not. If a piece of metal melted due to extreme heat, would you then say that the metal never existed? Of course not. We know that the same matter can move from solid to liquid to gas or any combination of such changes. The self should be considered in the same way as it shifts from one form to another to yet another.

A fella I've been listening to lately- Keb' Mo' sings a song called It's Good to Be. It's good to be young, it's good to be old, it's good to be here, it's good to be there, it's good to be home, it's good to be you, it's good to be me. It's a nice tune... Resting in the garden on a sunny day, watching the industrious bees and butterflies as they hover above and meander through the foliage to discover the colourful blossoms that burst from within or lizards scurrying across the pavers and lazing on rocks or a glitter of spinebills flitting from branch to branch in search of sweet nectar; that is my favourite place.

I am the wife, daughter-in-law, niece and mother of a trucker and I can say it isn t the same as it once was. Maybe it is just me, but it used to be an art form. Took a special breed to be a trucker. Drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and jamming gears. Now a days with all the automatics out there, seems like everyone thinks they can be a trucker. It is a privilege to hold that title, not a right. More people need to prove they deserve the title. They deserve the respect....

Eggs are fast becoming scarce I see signs in my supermarket saying it is due to Avian Flu but the shelves are fully stocked with fresh cakes from Euronatural Commercial Bakery every size and flavour imaginable every day apparently the egg shortages are not affecting the big companies, just us regular folk. Fresh Chicken cuts are plentiful . Golden Cockerel slaughterhouse is still running around the clock I wonder What s next on the scare mongering calendar?

Is there really a shortage or is it just a scheme to hike prices? There are plenty of farmers around area i live that have plenty of eggs & selling much cheaper than in store.

Following the death of the late Pope Francis and after watching Conclave, I thought to myself what would a woman offer as a Pope? I am not Catholic but do know that they do not ordain women as priests. Maybe in the future this will happen. There was a Pope in the 13th century named Pope Joan, although this is a matter of dispute. I feel that perhaps a woman would have more empathy, although men do have this as well. Just putting it out there.

God gave women small feet so that they can stand close to the sink, the stove and the washing machine. They should stay there.

I have just been disassembling some old macs...2 gig hard drives...256 megs of RAM that sort of thing running Disc doubler and RAM doubler...and with regular maintenance and their compact and fast operating systems it was effortless to produce magazines and books, create fantastic artwork, music, most if not all of the things that anyone would ever usually need a modern computer to do. So why do we need to keep on doubling computer power? Most people do very little...
Hilary P 701184
I hav no idea of all this stupid jargon that Computer Companies and IT people have invented just to keep their jobs . It is also the best way to get rid of the old folk like me. I am happy when the internet goes down as I still know how to add 1 and 1 together and how much change I get if I use cash not card at a supermarket. The government doesnt want the old people around as they know too much from the "olden days" so put them in the aged homes where they can stagnate with no need for computers. Fortunately I am not interested in all this cloak and dagger age so long as I can open my Amazon Kindle Account and my Rewardia Account and certain easy apps I dont give a hoot for Quantum computing. I had to look it up to find out what is was and the definition is equally as ridiculous as everything to do with programming. 'Utilizes quantum mechanical phenomena like superposition and entanglement to perform computations' I never swear but "What the f....are they talking about".

Responsible drinking means more than just limiting yourself to a certain number of drinks. It also means not getting drunk and not letting alcohol control your life or your relationships. Is there such a thing as responsible drinking?

Yes. I'm a recovering alcoholic, 11 years sober. My daughter sets rules for herself: Don't drink when you're down. Don't drink alone. I'm so damn proud of her

We've all been on a summer roadie and experienced first-hand the state of our roads. If you've ever been stuck in a summer traffic jam, had near-misses on dangerous turns or feared for your life on clifftops (while the car behind you is tail-gating!) - you may have an opinion on this one. Tell us what main road or highway you think needs some serious attention across the country, and why!

Concerns have been raised about Nelson Hospital, with complaints of lack of staffing and excessive wait times. Do you have confidence in your local emergency department?
Raymond K 449636
Not really, so as when I had big problems recently, and end up going to the Royal Perth hospital, where after a period of waiting, and after being admitted to the Emergency Ward, in no time was admitted to a ward for treatment, will be using this Hospital as they have a whole range of Medical Professionals to attend to my problems

I do not know if you believe in mediums or not but I talk with my family through her, as my wife and brother do every 6 months or so, this is a fun and spiritual hour and a half sometimes two, my brother passed almost a year plus ago and at our local, he has his pic on the honors shelf, we buy him a Bundy shot every time we are there so he can have a drink with us, on our last visit with Liz [our medium] who asked that we buy him a scotch instead of the Bundy he wants to drink what your drinking, How she knew that I have no idea that was something that my brother and I do, another time I had bought some gorilla glue for a bottle cutting project, but I could not find it, we were talking about something else and Liz says before I forget you gorilla glue is in the black and red jar on your table so don't buy any more its expensive your mum says, when I got home there it was, I have so many stories like that, I believe your family stays with you, i constantly talk with them ,they may be gone but they have never left,i you honestly talk with them you will be surprised what you hear

Who doesn't look forward to a vacation? It's a time to explore, relax, unwind and enjoy. However, sometimes things don't go so well. From lost luggage, a hotel that claimed to be luxurious but was seedy, overcrowded everywhere, noisy, rude people, awful food, etc, can make our vacation not so nice. What was your worst vacation?

I went to Bright,Victoria. A small village town half way up Lake Mountain. The most picturesque little town all year round back then.My ex husband and I were travelling by car ,6 hour drive. I was very pregnant with our first child. 40 degree heat in summer. We had a minor accident with the car in the first 15mins,no apparent damage,so continued. We should have turned back then. The car broke down more times than I can count. Luckily we had insurance that offered roadside assistance. By the time we arrived we had spent 12hours on the road in the heat and had the car towed the last 80kms. All accommodation was already paid for,but left us with very little money and bad sunburn. Still wasn't horrible,it's was truly beautiful. We ate ice-cream,walked around town, waded though the Oven's river( which is melted snow and freezing any time of year). We had some food we brought with us. Funny that everything we planned went wrong, but just being there was refreshing. Young love..we didn't care, had nothing,no money,no car. It didn't matter.

Yes fair call I'm probably an old fart...but in surveys there is so much that I never use at all EVER a whole array that everyone seems to be paying for....music....news information...food...sometimes I feel like I'm living on another planet...these guys give me 12 options in a survey and I can only click on three...any one else have this?
Elizabeth T 396096
Sure, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
I am finding it increasingly difficult to find who I am on surveys with all the new genders and sexualities and then you have to repeat all of this on the next page because "sex assigned from birth" is one question and "sex you see yourself as". How about just ask if you are male or female or other because if you TRULY believe you are one of these, then why does it matter what sex you were assigned at birth? And, just for simplicity, for sexuality, just have "gay or straight or other" and they can fill in what their "other" is instead of giving all survey takers a laundry list of possibilities to plough through until we find what we identify with? Honestly, it takes longer to read these prequalification lists these days than is reasonable.
Next they will be asking us if we consider ourselves human, alien or a furry and then THIS will have its own laundry list of ridiculous possibilities.
Oh, I forgot about the alien lizard species since just saying "I am alien" may not be good enough for some people. What if I identify as a Klingon or other race from Star Trek? The possibilities for making this question a kilometre long are endless!

So many people these days are choosing either to have private funeral services, a memorial service at a later date, or no service at all. I have opted for no service I have asked my family to when they feel s right all go out for dinner together (something we enjoy doing now) and order desserts (but no coconut lol) my family get it, I don't need any fuss, those who love me are in contact with me now. What are your thoughts?
Grommie
Like most of you I arrived into the world with very little fuss, and I intend to leave the world the same way. Why put all your friends and relatives through the expense of the funeral, and in many cases the high travelling cost? Funerals are for the living, not the dead. The corny line about "paying your respects" is Undertaker-speak for making indecent money from your estate for them. Watch out for the undertaker whose other half runs a florist shop and their son is in the catering business.

Which products or services do you consider a waste of time or money, and why? My biggest pet peeves are ad blockers, as ads always seem to stay ahead of ad-blocking technology. I see no point in paying for them. I also find many subscription services unnecessary especially those designed to help you manage your other subscriptions. What's next? A subscription service to monitor your subscription manager? Sometimes, I feel like companies believe that if they create something,...

Supermarket paper bags !!😡 l hate paying 25c for just one of them and then they break by the handles or spilt on the edges ..especially as the staff are usually useless at packing them... Overpack or careless .lt's a business You should be giving us free bags to take our product home in after you've made a nice profit from us ( massive profits compared to other stores who give you a free bag!!); .. and you'll also get free advertising as we walk down the street with your logo on the bags eh?
Then any surviving bags just collect in my cupboard expecting to be bought to the shop again one day ..mm never going to happen. Too bulky ,,and annoying and will not be in a good enough state by the time they get walked home again. So it's keep any nice plastic ones I get from other businesses ( yeahhh still available!) and try my hardest to remember to take a couple in my bag always !

The answer is simple, a lot of women think guys take compliments as more than what they are intended to be. If a woman complimented a guy on his nice haircut or a pair of jeans, then it's a good chance he could take that the wrong way. What would you say? Why do women hardly compliment men?
LA
Oh, it’s simple—women have learned the hard way that complimenting a man is basically signing an unspoken contract that he now thinks he’s irresistible.
You tell a guy, "Hey, nice shirt!" and suddenly he’s convinced he’s the best-dressed man in the tri-state area. He’s standing in front of the mirror, flexing, and considering starting a fashion blog.
You say, "Wow, your cologne smells great!" and now he thinks you’re secretly in love with him and starts making up your wedding hashtag.
Meanwhile, women get compliments all the time and just say, "Thanks!" and move on with their lives. A girl could hear "Your eyeliner is flawless!" and just be like, "Yeah, I spent 45 minutes on it, I know." But if a guy hears "Nice haircut!" he's suddenly pricing out motorcycles and sunglasses.
So, ladies have just learned to keep it to themselves. It’s a survival tactic. Compliment at your own risk—because next thing you know, Chad from accounting is naming your future children.

While there's no strict timeline, many recommend waiting at least 6 months to a year of dating before cohabitating. This allows time to understand each other's habits, values, and compatibility. What would you say? How early is too early to move in together?
Mooi
Seriously I am finding some of these discussions so boring. Use your common sense and make your own decisions.

I've noticed that the lonely heart/chat line/dating service adverts have moved from using highly unlikely pictures of women who could (and probably do) work as models...and into purely digital models....are these just bait...or are they trying to set you up with digital girlfriends?....how weird are these sorts of services going to get?...what do you think?
LA
Oh, it's only going to get weirder. Today, it's digital models; tomorrow, it'll be AI girlfriends who text you good morning and remind you to drink water. By next year, they'll come with a virtual mother-in-law who sends passive-aggressive notifications about your life choices.
And let's be real—if the bots ever get self-awareness, they'll start ghosting people just like humans do. "Sorry, Dave, I just don't feel a connection. Also, my algorithm says you're 87% likely to leave dishes in the sink, and I deserve better."

Do you have any handy hints & time/money saving tips for your household that have passed down through the generations? One of my favourites is baking soda to remover tea/coffee stains from cups. Pumice cleans brown stains off the bath & toilet bowl. Vinegar has many uses for cleaning. What are some tips you can share?

If you keep your eggs in the carton in the fridge and turn them over every week, they won't go off. While they sit a bubble forms in the top of the egg and this is when they go bad. In olden days the ships would be at sea for months and the eggs didn't go bad. The movement of the ship stopped the eggs going off.

The Government has a huge tax on fuel. It has a huge tax on Cigarettes. If they used the money raised from fuel tax, we would have the best roads in the world. If they used the money raised from Cigarettes, we would have the best hospitals also. Should they be using money from these things for this?

WELL, no matter what country if we didnt vote is or support morons who are only there to line their own pockets... I think maybe the train has left the station and we will suffer for our lack of interest in who and what is voted in. Your thought was actual fact 50 years ago, but we have advance so much we are living in a lunatic assylum.

A call came in and said a bench warrant had been issued for my husband's arrest and gave the name of an officer at the local police dept. I called them on my phone, they said they had an officer by that name, but he was assigned as a school crossing guard. My husband kept them on the phone and drove to the police dept. He handed the phone to an officer, and the scammer hung up. I don't think he has called again.

Married people also have built-in social and emotional support for each other, are less likely to participate in risky behaviours (such as problem drinking) and have better economic conditions compared to single people. However, it is important to note that not all romantic relationships are satisfying. What are your thoughts? Is it better to be single or married?
Jania S
What a stupid assumption. I have been both and both have its ups and downs --- to each his own and neither is better than the other. Did you get programmed at UNI????

It's never too late to start, but you should focus on finding your purpose and life task that is relevant to a certain job. Perhaps you're really good with numbers and need to be an Accountant or Financial advisor. Or you have a lot of empathy and love helping people, and perhaps should become a Therapist. What would your advice? Is it OK to start life at 40?
Jack M 393074
No, I restarted life at age 35 and now I am 75 years young and have been forced in 2008 at age 59 into an early retirement. I do online surveys to augment my stipends of SS and pension each month (Less than $1700 of which rent is $700).

To become mentally and emotionally strong, just set small goals, practice mindfulness, develop a growth mindset, surround yourself with supportive people, embrace discomfort, prioritise self-care, and regularly reflect on your progress. What is your advice? How do I become mentally strong?

Did you ever give or receive a compliment and realise it's also an insult? What are some you've heard? Why can't we just give each other a compliment without ruining it. Here are a few common ones: You look good for your age. You're just my type, I prefer someone with meat on their bones. You're pretty smart for a woman. You're a good cook for a man. Or perhaps these are insults that can also be compliments! How do you respond? Do you just take it as a...

The Bank of Mum and Dad is now utilised by 2 in 5 first home buyers in Australia, making it one of the largest lenders with an annual lending amount of around $92 billion and an average loan of approximately $92,000 per transaction. What does it mean to the rest of us? Is the bank of Mum and Dad creating a new class system?
Simone S 316632
Not really. Bank of Mum and Dad has always existed. I think the expectation is what has changed. I know my generation would only ask our parents for a loan if we were really in dire straits...and then pay it back. Now, I think there's generations of children who expect their parents to help and actually gift them the money.

I would love to be able to create a topic of compliments and inspiration. The very first person to comment would state something they're grateful for, then the next person to comment would compliment or inspire the person above them, and so on. The only rule. Make it positive or inspiring for the person above you. The reason I would love to do this is because I believe there's a lot of people out there, myself included, in this world that may feel lonely, sad, or just lost ...

My best friend of 28yrs committed suicide on June 6, 2024. I ve been feeling like this life is all a dream. My heart aches and I ve lost my appetite. I miss her, and she never mentioned she was hurting or had so many problems that she had to take her own life. Has anyone ever gone through this before and how did you handle it. It s hard for me because I once upon a time I tried it twice, and she didn t let me. She was always there for me.
Shawn B 1061185
I don't think the loss of your friend should be any different than losing a family member. My daughter died in the hospital while going through a routine operation. I too felt empty, couldn't eat, found no pleasure in any activity and I miss her tremendously.
From what I understand suicide comes when the person has lost all hope.People who do it don't try. They just decide when and then do it. It may sound cruel, but deep down I don't feel that you were serious when you "tried." It seems that you were just looking to confirm that somebody loved you.
I came close to doing it once. I had lost all hope about everything. I got professional help, and some pretty good medications from a liscensed physician and I hardly ever go there again. Yes, occasionally I get feeling very low, but that's pretty much because I suffer from profound depression, PTSD, and I'm Bi-polar. Nothing is perfect and I'm not sure if I can ever be 'cured' but I just keep on carrying on and greet each day as an opportunity in stead of a challenge. Good Luck!

For me, they shape our opinions, attitudes, and beliefs about the world around us. The media can also influence how we perceive ourselves and others by providing information that reinforces certain stereotypes or exaggerated images of people from different backgrounds. What are your thoughts? Does news affect our daily lives?
Dennis 1500002
Well, here in the USA our news revolves around the election later this year in which our choices seem to be an invalid, a felon, and a guy who says a worm ate part of his brain, so yes, this is affecting me and not in a good way. You guys have room for me down under ?

This was all over the NEWS recently... According to a Dynata Survey, the majority of young people said they would rather flee their COUNTRY than FIGHT for it. Those under 35s ... and they were also ashamed of their COUNTRY for --- whatever reason? This is certainly disturbing news! Your thoughts?
allin3/24
i spent 7 years in the infantry in the '60s, where i learned that fighting for country was the farthest thing from the truth, we were fighting for the folks that built planes, tanks, guns, uniforms, ammo etc, to give them exorbitant profits, Viet Nam, where we learned how to profit from war at the expense of our young folks, not all, just the ones their daddy couldn't pay his way out of it

Australian parents are asking the government to legislate a law banning people under the age of 16 from having an account on social media. How you could police that, I have no idea. Many admit it would enable them to stop their children using social media by blaming someone else. What on earth is wrong with these people? Are they afraid of their children? It would seem so. My Mum & Grandma were very superstitious & some of those superstitions rubbed off on me! I will not walk under ladders as it is unlucky. Grandma would never have peacock feathers in her house - they were unlucky. If I see a black cat, to me that is a lucky omen. If my mum dropped a utensil, then we were going to get visitors! If she spilt salt, she would throw some over her left shoulder so she wouldn't have an argument. I love finding a four leaf clover, that is so lucky....
Tupulua S
Superstitious is the devil's idea to cloud you mind and not make the right decision. When things happen, it happens for a reason. Black cat crossed the road to go home, or, to find food, or to find a mate. One of my best friends told me not to look in the mirror at night, because you see bad things. Thats a load of hogwash

As a semi-retired tradie and I have always eaten lunch while I work without stopping due to very unreasonable deadlines. So in general, there is no need to offer lunch as most tradies bring their own or send the apprentice to buy some. But as for me, I have always appreciated the offer of a nice hot coffee.

When you're ready to get married, it takes a lot out of you in planning. One of the tasks is when you organise your wedding party with your close friends/family into the party. It's possible to choose your baby's gender and eye colour now and in theory it's also possible to genetically edit genes to enhance an unborn baby's health or appearance... but the big question is, when and if it becomes available, should we do it? Scientists tell us the best way to protect endangered species is to protect the special places where they live. Wildlife must have places to find food, shelter and raise their young. Logging, oil and gas drilling, over-grazing and development all result in habitat destruction. Do you reckon it's still possible to restore the wildlife?

There are parts of New Zealand that have done just that and have brought native species back from the brink of extinction. It takes effort, but it is possible.

The old cliche is: The rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer! Australia is one of the richest nations in the world. Our percentage of Millionaires is --- growing. Our percentage of poor are also --- growing. Do you believe we should tax the wealthy more, to help the poor? How do we narrow the gap?

OMG!! There it is cultural Marxist socialism , the path to communism.
A fast track to Universal basic income and being worker drones for the government with no freedoms and work for your government housing and food rations, A world where everyone is equally miserable.
The way to kill off any incentive to work hard for yourself and be successful.
All we need to do is get rid of corrupt politicians and STOP the insanity of the 2 party preferential voting for government.
It is 1% of the world's filthy rich billionaires who are controlling everything and they want you to ALL be poor while they grow richer and control you more.

Don't trap stray cats. Kill them if anything. I know this sounds harsh. but they are a pest to native birds etc in our country. trap and kill. do not trap and feed!!!! I'm horrified by your logic. We have now got open days here to kill all stray feral cats humanely.

Is it good to have a retirement age after which one can stop working? This has both good and bad side. If there is a fixed age for retirement, the younger group can join the workforce and possible contribute better in most cases. However, the experienced person can also contribute special activities which require a lot of experience. For example: when we go to a doctor, particularly for critical illness, we always look for an experienced doctor. Further, retirement...
Elizabeth T 396096
In reality, you can retire at any age if you have the financial means to do so. What you are talking about is retirement age to either access superannuation or a government pension. I hate how the age has increased due to what the government perceives as "aging population". The old system of "voluntary retirement at 55" is much better than "work until you die" mentality which prevails today. (Obviously, voluntary retirement at 55 was to access superannuation and NOT welfare and you can no longer do this as the minimum retirement age is 10-20 years higher for most people currently working and this is awful).

I'm curious to see what people have to say about that. I personally talk to my cat and dog all the time! They are good listeners, and they don't judge me, and they're always happy to see me, lol
Linda C
Yes of course. She is my companion and she knows so much it surprises me. I have been told that some dogs know as much as a 2 year old and I believe that. I taught her commands by talking and hand movements so she responds to either but I can say things like you are on the wrong side and she changes side, which way do we go today and she looks left and right and then decides etc. I often think I should write down what she knows just out of curiosity but she surprises me all the time understanding even more. Animals are amazing creatures.

Do you think there'll be an end to seniors receiving government pensions by the year 2073 or in 50-yrs? It's been a century's long stable way of living while enabling seniors to enjoy their later years. And do you think it's a good idea to put off retirement until after the age of 70 instead f taking an earlier retirement? Where I live, a senior can be qualified as a person 55+ albeit even though they are still working & haven't yet retired from the work force.
Maz 1376468
I think that people who have worked all their life should be able to have some retirement life before they become too frail. Retirement age should be 65 yrs and if people want to work longer they can and have tax benefits. Everyone has a different lifestyle and health. Some people already end up unable to work at 65 due to ill health, just look at the aging population that end up in Nursing Homes who are in their early 70s. Let there be a small time in life to enjoy some retirement

I believe TV was much better to watch in the olden days, as it used to have heaps of children & family programmes compared to these days. I used to love the older shows more than now, remember any animal shows like Skippy, Rin-Tin-Tin, Lassie, Flipper or such good movies like Shirly Temple, TV shows like Little House on the Prairie, The Brady Bunch, Lost in Space etc. These were the best time growing up & you never forget them. What is there on...
Paula J 395266
I agree with you completely, TV was better in my childhood. There was no bad language, no sex and no bloody murders. We lived in a blissful world where we were allowed to have a childhood. Right was right and wrong was wrong and there was no grey area, Superman would always save the day. Around the 70's the so called educators graduated from uni and decided for us that children should not grow up thinking everything will work out for the best and that they should not be taught about God but sex instead. Noddy and Big ears were perverts and we can't have a golly wog. Children should know that you die, can be murdered and all sorts of horrible things can happen to you so stranger danger dialled up full speed. No more fairy tales or dreaming of meeting a prince. I couldn't believe a mother told her son that Prince Charming was molesting Snow White. How sad is that. Children are now confronted with the horrible facts of life, and it's cruel in my opinion. They are afraid of climate change, endangered species and being buried alive underneath piles of rubbish. They get political correctness, gender issues and now having to apologise to indigenous people for stealing their land. Is it any wonder young people feel that they have no hope, they need drugs, are depressed and have high rates of suicide. On the other hand, how are we coping, we who grew up with Superman and fairy tales? Very well thank you.

Are you sick of proving to robots that you are not a robot? Are you annoyed when a robot or AI interface insists you are a robot? What are the most annoying steps you have been forced to endure to prove your humanity (not just in surveys, but in real life) and has failing a test that is supposedly something only a robot can fail inconvenienced you? Being chronically late isn t just rude or inconvenient it s now considered a medical condition. A person recently went viral on TikTok for saying in a tearful video that she was reprimanded for asking for accommodation for "time blindness," a condition she said makes it harder to show up for work on time. People with time blindness struggle to keep track of and estimate time. So, is being late a real medical condition?

Just what is the point of them?

I read a book where a couple gets married, and the husband made it clear they wouldn't live together. He said they'd avoid getting on each other's nerves, invading the other's space, and never have to worry about familiarity breeding contempt. After the usual misunderstandings and stuff that happens in novels, at the end they had their "happily ever after", but still lived in separate houses! In real life, would this be a good idea?

It is actually better for the woman and not the man. Married men who live with their wives live longer whereas it is the opposite for women. But whatever floats your boat, is okay I reckon.

It's hard to leave the house when it's raining/windy/cold out, yet as a teenager/20's was out in all weather AND without a jacket! (Yes, living on the edge) What about you? Is it an age thing, or preferences changing?
BLACK LIVES MATTER
I reside (moved to a warm weather area - Southern Sunny California) in Southern Sunny California for almost 39 years, and it has been almost 39 years since I have to deal with cold weather (however, Southern Sunny California is basically a desert - not a lot of rainfall on an annually basis in Southern Sunny California - I actually look forward to rainy days in Southern Sunny California). I will have to relocate to the MOON - to get away from windy days (LOL)! I guess dealing with cold weather (at my age - now) would be living on the edge - because my survival flexes are too slow to survive in a cold weather (locale) environment (my survival reflexes got spoiled my residing in Southern Sunny California for such a long time) - I would literately and figuratively freeze to death in a cold-weather site (these days) - within hours - LOL!

Why are truck drivers so inconsiderate and reckless driving how they swerve from Lane to Lane cut cars off, run cars onto the shoulder why do they do this can you tell me why?
Margaret B 429563
Excuse me!? I think you will find most long distance truckies are the most considerate and consistently safest drivers on the road. It is the impatient arrogance and rudeness of other road users that cause the accidents and other issues on the road! These giant machines weigh an awful lot (tons) and they require both room and space to stop their vehicles and/or turn corners, especially suburban intersections. They also have large areas of 'blind spots' where they simply cannot see cars & other vehicles - just like blind spots in a ar, on.y bigger. If you have any concerns re truck drivers and their driving, might I suggest you do a little research and take a bit more caution on the road to ensure your own safety and that of the truck drivers, too ??

I'm finding quite frequently that people are way too serious. Almost every time I view a forum on Rewardia, it is serious, and free of fun. Let's try something different today. Tell us your best joke.
Gaza
I think political correctness is trying to spoil Australians sense of humor. You can't seem to tell a joke without upsetting someone.

Food costs, housing, every day living rising. Will society collapse? Can we make it through without government intervention (if any)? Of course, certain people and corporations are making a mint, but what about every day people? How are you managing, and what are you doing to combat increases? Yes, a lot of questions, but they are interconnected.

I am patiently, calmly and faithfully waiting for the return of our Christ Jesus to return! Call me what you want, but I have Faith in God's words recorded in His instruction book, the Bible, that says soon Jesus will return with his angelic forces, and, "The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it." Psalm 37:29. Don't believe me? Believe what the Bible says in Psalm Chapter 37! Then, read Isaiah 65:17-25 to see how it will be living on a paradise earth, forever, as God intended it to be! I can hardly wait for this old system to end! ;-D

Do you think you pay a fair price for prescription Medication? Have you ever paid a lot for Medicines? What, if any, would you like listed on the Government subsidy-list?
Jania S
I thank God, that we were born before USA gave Australia a regime change in 1973-6 when doctors were doctors and they knew that there are lots of natural items to keep you heathy, These things are still available but doctors cannot tell you, High blood pressure can be prevented and managed by natural means just like flu [2020-rename-ccv] etc etc. Amazing how natural things like Garlic, lemons, grapefruit, ginger, tumeric etc can keep you healthy. BUT I am thankful for the Australian medicare system, where we still pay 2.5% of our salary for the privilege. and I am not in USA where they murder people by over medication.... Love of Money is root of all evil.

People get marry for one reason in a capitalist country - money (or if you prefer an upgrade in their lifestyle). Capitalist countries have the highest divorce rate on the planet. Why do you think people get marry in a capitalist country?
MoB
From someone who has been married for 52 years it's easy to see why people don't stay married. Firstly they get together for lust, they spend more than a deposit on a house for a wedding, mostly to impress others. After a couple of years, not being able to save or do things they want to do and the lust wearing off, they want out. Then because they have children or pets a divorce costs another fortune. To get married for love you don't need a big wedding, you need to be aware of your partners faults and they of yours. Then you need to work together to stay in love with them warts and all. Don't start a family for a couple of years that gives you time for each other and to save. If you are in love staying home together and saving hard is no issue. When children come along you are then able to share your love and give them a stable home life. Unfortunately its all about what you have now, house, car, boat etc. most of which are not yet paid for. Love doesn't care if you are communist or capitalist it matters to the two people involved.

While some young women are paying massive amounts of money to have minor things that set them apart and make them unique...removed...so they look more like everyone else...other already attractive women are pumping poison into their faces to stop wrinkles (20 year old women worrying about wrinkles)...and most alarming is everyone pumping "fillers" into their lips to look like a younger Mick Jagger...as their lips expand, they lift clear of their face...some call it "Duck...

Rubber lips I call them. Not attractive at all, same with tattoos, what will they look like 20 years from now.

Do you have any dreams, weird or not, that actually turn out that part of it is true? I had a dream last week and Prince Edward's wife, Sophie, was in it. We were just talking and then she started writing. I noticed that she was writing with her left hand. I said another lefty. Likewise, I'm also a lefty. When I woke up, I googled to see if she was a lefty, and she is indeed a lefty.

I have been having unusual dreams and de ja vu since I was very small. The most disturbing was a reoccurring dream of a close friend going away, for about 3 months every night this included other people and places they went . A couple of days before I saw a horrific car accident but was constantly pushed back from the flashing lights and crash scene.. My friend was killed 3 days later, same car same accident, and everyone in the dream did what I saw. I have never been the same

Do you believe that people should have the right to have a doctor assisted suicide? People that live in incredible pain, people that are so depressed that they want to die. Thoughts?
Michelle S 553303
I spent many years working as a Palliative Care nurse and in Aged Care situations as an RN. Assisted suicide is a normal part of end of life care for some and terminal sedation is a practice that has been practised for many years. I remember an incident in a public hospital I worked in, and we were warned not to discuss it, but it was more than a decade ago. An elderly man had very bad frontal lobe or Dewy Body Dementia. He was being cared for at home because he had been previously admitted to other Nursing homes in and around this area, but due to him flinging his fists around and utterly refusing personal care because he no longer understood what these strangers were doing to him, his physical health was suffering and they wouldn't have him back again. He wasn't getting nutrition, hydration and as he was doubly incontinent he was getting bad excoriation on his privates and the pain from this was causing more negative behaviour. He would refuse tablets and spit them out if the nurse DID manage to get them in his mouth and consequently he wasn't even getting the antipsychotics and calmatives he needed so he could recieve adequate care. So we have a human being who is just a mere shell of who he was, and that was an absolute creep as we remembered him from long ago, who's family could no longer cope, were out of resources and had ZERO other options for care. So the decision was made with his specialists, local GP and family to bring him into the hospital for terminal sedation. We were NOT obliged to care for him and we had the option to refuse to give the medication that would take him away from this earthly plane of existence. From my recollection it took about 72 hours for his heart to stop. He hadn't been the man he was for some time and his family had already grieved that loss some time ago. All there was now was relief and thankfulness that neither would suffer any longer. I'd be interested if anybody has a suggestion as to how THEY might have managed this situation if THEY had been this man's family. I suffer pain all the time and sometimes it's so bad that I wish it was all over. Nobody has the right to tell me that my suffering isn't bad enough to warrant me thinking of a permanent way out. I take painkillers but you become used to them after some time and the efficacy reduces. But people should be able to choose to end their lives on their own terms and we show animals that kindness. Why NOT humans who are suffering?

Why does appearance (looks) trumps smarts? Why does physique (male) or a body (female) trumps character? Why does political conspiracy theories trumps facts? Why is racism still alive in the 21st Century? Why is sexism still alive in the 21st Century? What do they all in common? What is your opinion?

It's my birthday today (47) and if people are into superficial, well so be it. I would rather listen to my father in law who will be 90 tomorrow, say a few words than listen to someone ramble on for an hour with no substance. It is getting complicated PC wise but no matter what you've been through as long as you can overcome and hold your head up high. Don't complicate life, take the good with the bad, at the end of the day we are all still here and I'm grateful for it. All the best Mr Walter W (appreciate your responses).

Do you still enjoy reading a good book instead of listening to it on audiobook? There are so many books out there. Fiction, Non Fiction, Murder & Mystery, Biography, Spiritual, Self help etc. Do you have a favourite author? I enjoy true stories & ones that are romantic. Nicholas Sparks is one of my go-to authors, and I love curling up with a good book. How about you?
Ian 1561638
never tried an audiobook. Joined my local library at 5 years old and am still a member (of a different one) and avid reader at 69. Books are best and always will be imho

From all the countries in the world, which one would you like to live in and why?

In Australia before they done away with the white Australian policy. They seem to let all kinds in these days, people and races that won't assimilate.

At the end of a hard day work do you sit with your family hoping to have genuine family time, see what the kids or spouse have been up to for the day only to find them all on the couch either on their phones or iPads ignoring each other? I don t know whether to interrupt or just let them be? Thoughts !
Jessica 1737718
We have dinner and discuss how was each others work and or school and conversate if needed on issues at hand regardless of the matter(obviously no parent stuff with kids) and anything going on with the world if it needs to be discussed.
