Discussions of the day

I treasure any gift I am given, except for the time my mother gave me a gift for Christmas, which I had given her the year before for her birthday. Have you ever returned a gift someone gave to you or gifted it on to someone else?
Christine M 323842
Better to regift, swap, or sell. No need to have useless things around. There is plenty of things that I actually need. Always appreciate that someone has been kind enough to think of me though.

Growing up a little boy my Mother had a vast array of cutlery she told me that if I was ever invited to tea with the Queen I'd know what spoon, knife or whatever to use...three full sizes of knives and forks...fruit spoon, soup spoon, desert spoon, jam spoon, cheese knife, steak knife, fish knife...the list went on.... I haven't seen most of these in over 40 years...has anyone else?
marni k
If you're hungry who cares how you shovel it in Mind you I still want to know what cutlery is what in case I ever go to a posh restaurant like in the movie Pretty Woman

Have you kept in touch with workmates from previous jobs? I have from the last two jobs I had, and it is really great to have a catch up now and again and talk about "old times" I wish I had stayed in touch with more of my workmates - I often used to think about them, but never followed up on it. What about you?
Priscilla R 316016
Yes, I have, and they have rallied around me this year after my husband died suddenly. Don't know what I would have done without them

You may find the following tips helpful. Use a bowl in the sink when washing fruit, vegetables or dishes. You can then use the waste water to water your plants. Fill a jug with water and put it in the fridge for when you want a cool drink. Turn off the tap when you clean your teeth. A running tap uses up to nine litres of water a minute. If possible, take a shower instead of a bath. A five-minute shower uses about 40 litres of water. This is about...
TERRIE K
I do most of these now but I'm just wondering what a Water Butt is. We have 3 rainwater tanks and use that to give fresh water to my birds and to water the garden.

How many people now do their hair at home rather than go to a Hairdresser? What do you do to your hair and how often? Do you ever relent and go to the stylist for help, when do you know it's time? I need stories!
Maria B 89860
I have been cutting/shaping my own hair now for years, mainly because it save me money .. there's a pile of hair money somewhere which I've yet to find!!!

Many may think: Well, that's what a first date is, but what I mean is, if you were sitting alone and another was sitting alone at a restaurant, would you accept the offer (or make the offer) to eat with them? Or, would you even dine alone in the first place?
Bill B 394870
I guess its a good way to meet people but ive always found it somewhat terrifying eating alone in a restaurant and avoid it.

What is your preferred destination for a holiday and has this changed since COVID? I used to go to the snow every year, this wasn't possible for the last two years due to lockdowns in Australia, but since COVID, I'd rather spend time holidaying with family and friends.
marni k
I'm going to go for something a little different. I would love to holiday in Ireland and spend some time on their wild, windy and cold moors and glens. Who wants to join me? Heehehe

While working in a factory a few years ago, had spare time on my hands, too keep myself busy I would go wipe down benches wash dishes etc. One particular day I did the dishes scrubbed some of them as the cups were filthy, the owner of one of these cups hit the roof as he believed that tea tastes better from a dirty cup, so what do you think?
Larry S 382961
I worked as a school cleaner. One staff room has a sign over the sink.” This is a self cleaning area, you mess it you clean it”.

You have plans for the upcoming weekend and have asked your sibling or close family member to watch your children, 2 under 4 years old. Do you pay the person given that when asking there was no mention of payment and it only being for 3 hours?
Maria B 89860
Labour of love is not a chore. It's like cooking and doing other things for your family or extended family and is acknowledge and thanked in a Birthday or Special Occasion cards. But neither is it forgotten as the children grow to an understanding age they are taught to return the kindness by being helpful to these caring people in as they get older .. mow their lawn and other such things.

When I shop at specific Walmart stores, not all are bad as claimed. I ve been to the upscale ones that are in the neighborhoods of famous American football players and Basketball players, and they look like a mall. Anyway, I noticed that many of those working there don t want to help assist us. I try not to take up much of their time and I thank them multiple times and be courteous, even when they aren t. It does seem to help them and many behave nicer afterwards. What do...
Frank N
I tend to think that the atmosphere and staff culture of a store is set by senior management, although staff who are overworked and underpaid will react to that also.
11-Sep-21

I think they should record people doing 10 kilometers or more under the speed limit as well. These people are just as likely to cause accidents as speeders.
Margaret C 68385
Whilst I stick to the speed limit and I am considered "old" these days, I find it incredibly frustrating to be stuck behind someone on a go slow especially when they are doing 70 in a 110 zone with no extra lanes. This type of driving causes accidents due to frustration and particularly if you have a 3 trailer road train boring down on you! Mind you, having been a nurse for 40 years, I also know what damage speed can do to bodies.
02-Sep-21

Do you plan on making any home improvements? If so what and do you plan on doing it yourself or hire someone to do it for you?
Roslyn A
I get too annoyed with tradies who don't seem to care much about how they do it - I do as much as possible myself and I have become very professional

Has anyone had any type of account hacked before? We had our Netflix hacked recently, they hacked it and watched few movies and TV shows. If you were hacked what did you do besides change password
Diana A 392333
Both my and my husband's credit card were hacked and instead of doing nothing but cancel the card and have a new one sent out and my money reimbursed by the credit card company. I went on a mission to find out who it was. To cut a long story short, I contacted the merchants and found out the name, address, phone number and e-mail addresses of the two perpetrators and handed it over to police (needless to say I also stopped the goods from being sent out). I then also contacted the local newspaper (The Mercury) and they printed an article on how I was able to track down the hackers, I also wanted to share valuable tips on how people can avoid this from happening to them from the info I got from police. The article was in yesterday's Mercury and took up almost a full page. I also noticed that The Telegraph had the article in digital version too. I urge others to make the effort to do the same, because if no one does anything, these people will know they can do it again and again and always get away with it!

When you leave a partner and you have a pet is it appropriate / ideal to have shared custody?
LESLEY S 385154
I'm pleased to have never been put into this situation and never will. It is hard when your pet passes away so I think sharing would be as difficult as well. I think maybe for the pet let it decide.

Do you use Cryptocurrency? Do you think the market for it is stable enough to incorporate saving for it into your budget? Or is Cryptocurrency a waste of time in your opinion?
judy W 15921
Us oldies haven't a clue what that's all about most of us are still trying to work out how to use a mobile. I prefer to pay cash ar paypal
25-Apr-21

Hocking one's belongings is not ideal obviously. But it's an option if you're broke, struggling, an artist or living paycheck to paycheck. I certainly don't judge people who do it. What are your thoughts on pawn shops and the people who use them?
BLACK LIVES MATTER
I don't get attached to things (I get attached to people)! At this point in my life - I never had to hocked ANYTHING (I never had to use a pawn shop) - hopeful, this trend will continue until the day I die! It goes without saying, I don't judge people who do use pawnshops, however - I judge pawn shop owners (since the the majority of pawnshops are located in the poorest section of a city)!

Within a very limited budget and wanting to do my bit, it is easy in small ways. Composting food waste, don t chuck it in the bin, take your soft plastics to Coles, they recycle it for you. You can put all you garden waste on the garden, just put it on top and let it dry out, you can buy Bioplastcs now in snack bags, sandwich bags and bin liners, wait until they are on special at Woolies or Coles. If you haven t the finances for Solar or Water Tanks, these are just...
Dang Ling-bits.
I find if I drink about 20 beers and then follow it up with Honey Bourbon, a few cocktails and a shot or two of Sambuca it tends to make me turn green.

My partner really wants an Xbox and expects me to help pay for it. I tried to explain to him that I shouldn't have to help pay for his console since I won't be using it myself, although he believes I should help since his last one smashed due to us having an argument. He has asked me nicely, but I know it's all part of the act, at the moment I'm not to sure what to do since Christmas is coming up and who wouldn't buy their loved ones something they really want? What would...
Edith v
He sounds very selfish .I would be looking for a new boyfriend. Part of the Christmas spirit is to give what you can afford & give it with love.A surprise is good fun. Of course he's asked nicely & you are a wake up to the "act" bye the way has he said what he is buying you for a gift . I'd be looking for a more sincere man & give him his marching orders

Once upon a time, I used to think napping was for lazy people. But now I've discovered a nap can actually improve my productivity. Are you a napper? If so, how long do you nap for and why?
Judy CH
I don't probably couldn't as people down the Road have dogs that bark nearly all day, but I have a sister 2 years younger than me that stays up nearly all night watching stupid movies then goe's to bed for a while, gets up to get the grandchildren off to school and goes takes sleeping pills and has another couple of hours, gets up at lunch time then more sleeping pills about 4 pm and up about 6.30!. I don't have much to do with her now she's so stupid!.

They seem to either a). dial down their dreams in front of others in fear of what they might think or b). Disguise their aspirations with humour. Both are gutless, don't you think? When you have a dream, you should stand in your power. Dreaming small serves no-one!
Margaret S 462428
I was brought up to believe not everyone will be pleased for whatever I do or have. I have learnt to be a little careful how loud I shout from the roof tops and tend to keep it within my immediate family and friends. It does not however stop me from going after any dream I may have and I have many. Dreams do come true!!

There is so much to be learnt from the elderly. They've lived through wars and journeyed through struggles we couldn't even comprehend. Yet they are almost dismissed by society. It really annoys me.
Simone S 316632
When you're elderly, you either become invisible or an irritation. Younger people (and I include those well into their 40's even) become impatient with older people who are stuggling physically. I've seen it at supermarket check-outs all the time, the operator will whizz all the groceries through while the elderly person tries to keep up, then when the elder fumbles around trying to pay, those standing in line start sighing with impatience. I've even seen in family situations, the younger generations laughing or mocking their elders when they are trying to participate in a conversation. The whole 'ok boomer' tagline is the new "you wouldn't understand becuase you are not a parent' putdown that people who don't want to listen use. Elderly people deserve far more respect and patience than what they currently get.

I never saw the appeal of Ken myself. And my Barbie dolls never played with him. I think Barbie should kick Ken to the curb. Do you?

This is the sort of topic which would be of interest to a certain childish US president who just lost the election and baby did not like it!

I mean, first we were told they were bad for us and high in cholesterol. Then we were told they were good for us with high-quality protein. Then we were told they were bad for us again. What is the actual verdict on the nutrition of eggs? Does anybody actually know?
Pato Lo Duck
Eggs are high in cholesterol, but it is good cholesterol and as such eggs are good for you. On the other hand, pairing them with bacon is bad, because bacon is bad for you on a number of fronts. But bacon tastes so good...

If you had to choose between Smarties and M&Ms, which would you favour?

I love these deep philosophical debates ...I would only eat either of them if it was the last food source on Earth and I hadn't eaten in a few days...

I could think of nothing worse than spending my days liking and sharing posts on social media. I don't care about a photo of my mate's lunch. Life is short. Who wants to take their last breath scrolling and swiping? Not me

lt's pretty sad that people count the stranger they share the life's with as friends. lt must be lonely

Economists say that the future could possibly be cashless. But it could be problematic for low-income individuals. Do you think this would work or not ? If so, why?
Bugalugs
I already almost entirely do. I am no techno genius, nerd or particularly "modern" but I find I can manage my money better, I pay all my bills electronically (is that "digitally"?), have numerous accounts (with the same bank) and divide my income between them for specific reasons (Utilities, phone, rates etc.) so the money is always there when a bill is due. All my grocery buying is done using a Debit card.

Most of my friends get fake tans, it's the safer option. But I love sunbaking. I know that it can cause skin cancer, I know that it can cause premature ageing but that doesn't remove my love for it. There is something revitalizing about the sun beating down and penetrating your skin
Bugalugs
I tyan very easily - thanks to my Indian Heritage all mixed ip with my Irish-Spanish blood. As my Dad used to say: I am a real mongrel!

Do you hire professionals or do you DIY for home maintenance projects e.g. driveway cleaning, exterior home cleaning, painting etc?
Susan H 801435
We call my husband's son - who - is a gifted "jack of all trades" and take him out to dinner as a "thank you!"
07-Aug-25

What stories can you share about first words that aren't Mum or Dad? I know ours was actually our cats name ...
Elvira D 70287
My son is 26 years old and up until today I can still recall when he was 5 months old and I was trying to teach him to say Papa instead he would say papaw, it was so funny to hear.

I have 5 beautiful grandchildren ranging in age from 18 months to 9 years. They have so many toys, books & games. Each birthday & Christmas I try to think of something different for them. The 9 year old's last birthday I chose a membership to a Kids Conservation club. She gets invited to fun activities, plus receives relevant activity books & parcels every few months. There are activities they can do as a family. Like visiting the glow worms, studying crabs etc. Do most...
Teri 1282723
I spend $100 each on my children and grandchildren for Christmas and birthdays. For Easter I get them each some chocolate.
One granddaughter and daughter always want a gift card to a particular store (Winners) so that's what they get. My sons get cash or gift card depending on their wants at that particular time. I often watch what people appear to like throughout the year and will buy that for Christmas. One year I made everyone an afghan for their beds or to snuggle with on the couch when they felt like. I always ask if there's something they want, but it's often the same gift cards or cash. Cozy sweaters and pyjamas are a Christmas staple:)

Whatever happened to all cars having a strong steel bumper bar front and back and a thick chassis underneath? Back in the day if you had a crash you can mostly be guaranteed to either drive away or have your car fixed quite quickly with minimal cost. Today have a small bump on the car and it's a completer write-off. Bumper bars and chassis were there for a reason and that reason is safety for the occupants of the car. You may have got a bit shook up but you were never seriously...
Joanne Y 440141
Sure as hell felt safer driving around in my 1957 Chev compared to my 2009 VE Commodore. Older cars were made of real steel and made to last, new cars are just throw away items hence why they have the safety of the air bags etc etc.

Do you feel guilty when you watch real-life crime shows? They are so sensationalized and basically exploiting a person's tragic end. I love crime shows but I always wonder if consuming them is ethical. Thoughts?
Lyn 78550
I do like the way the British do their series such as Midsomer Murders, The Bill, Heartbeat etc. Also like crime shows that actually show the real people at the end of the movie that has been shown. I only watch movies of real life stories and find them very interesting.

I recently got married, and we didn't have a big fancy wedding ... just got married in the backyard with our closest friends. I want to book a trip for me and the hubby that's somewhat inexpensive but romantic at the same time. I need ideas and input please and thank you

Sample the options right in your area that you never thought of doing before. You can stay at home but each day plan to do something different and explore what has always been there but you were too busy to notice until now. You get to pick 3 things and so does he.

Just wondering if anyone has told a lie no matter if it is big or small to make sure that your partner stay with you
Debra D 624780
I found out last week, people in authority do not believe the truth, I am age 66, this shocked me. Had I lied, the person would have believed that.

Wanted to know if anyone still uses remedies or have remedies they don't mind sharing in the comment for colds & flus, with weather getting so much colder than usually this year? I like to go with good old pumpkin soup but with a few dashes of chilli just to give it a good hot kick :)
Carmel C 103964
Can't go by putting a few drops of eucalyptus oil in a bowl of hot water and putting your head over it, covering yourself with a towel and inhaling deeply for a while. Then off to bed with a hot lemon juice and honey drink. Stay hydrated. Rest up, eat a balanced diet, laugh lots and get some sunshine if you can.

Easter seems to changed over the years with many more products on the market. Do you give Easter gifts other than chocolate s? If so, what do you give others at this time of year?
Lones
Growing up, we made an Easter basket at school and received small eggs from the Easter bunny, Easter is about other things than chocolate. These days children seem to get too much and don’t appreciate what they receive. Maybe the should learn the true meaning of Easter

I love very much my son, but the love that I feel for his 3 years old twin girls (my grand-kids) is much much more that I can express. It's that OK?

How lovely for you. I do not have any contact with my grand children and have never met 2 of them. Family dynamics can be sad sometimes.

How has distance learning been going for all the parents out there? Especially parents with special needs children? I have two autistic toddlers and it has been rough!
Imperia S
I am so lucky my kids are grown up with families of their own. I am so proud of all parents who had to fill this void, I would have never been able to cope,

I read recently that purchasing these products in public makes some people feel awkward. I kinda felt that was weird. I mean it's not the 1800s. There is nothing to feel ashamed about. Most people out shopping are only focused on themselves anyway.
Phyrephly
Not really for these products (part of life, as has been said here), but I was in line behind someone who was looking - it turned out - for some anti-nit shampoo. When she (or he ;}), got to the counter, the lass behind asked "the person" to speak up then ... practically yelled, "oh, you mean nit-shampoo!"...

I prefer to pack my own groceries at the supermarket, even though I have ample bags they always pack to overflow and pack all the cans in together so I can't even lift the bag. Bread laying down on top of one another instead of standing up so it won't squash. Yesterday the flour was in the cold bag, making the paper damp. Am I to picky or do other people have the same gripe?
Queenbee
It is quite often that they will overload your bag and it is dry heavy to put in and out of your trolley. Of course they want to serve and scan quickly and packing takes time. But the supermarkets need have more staff at checkouts and then we all win.
10-Feb-21

How lovely is it, when we receive a gift where a lot of thought has gone into it? ie: something unconventional or homemade. You remember those kinds of gifts forever. It's easy to buy someone chocolates or flowers, as nice as they are. What is the most thoughtful gift you have ever given or received? And why was it so special?
Morton B
I am grateful for whatever I receive because it means that person thought of me. Its the thought that counts

I could never live in a home without a bath, I honestly don't know how people do it. My nightly bath is a ritual, a tradition. It s my much needed me-time. If I never had a shower again, it wouldn t bother me. But my daily bubble bath will be with me until the end of time.

I wear whatever makes me feel comfortable, happy, stylish and sometimes sexy lol basically whatever my mood is on the day,I wear something to match that unless I am just blobbing out at home on the couch, well then that's a PJ day..You won't find any designer labels in my wardrobe though,i'm not that rich.

So much of our time is spent on the net, but I'm wondering if it is right that I might put up a birthday message to someone and then have another friend add a happy birthday sentiment even though they do not know them?

You put message on the board so expect this. If you want privacy send a card. More time spend, but it's more personal

Is it inevitable. Companies are getting smarter and gathering more personal data with every click - what's your experience so far, do they get the 'suggested' products or services right and does it actually suggest things you would like?

I really don\u2019t like the fact that my phone is listening to my conversations and Facebook is tracking my likes. I prefer to look up products that I need myself.

Boardgames were very popular when I was growing up, and I really enjoyed playing them. These days people play more on computers, smartphones and gaming consoles. Do you still play boardgames? What are some of your favourites?

I don't have anyone to play with, so if I play any games it's usually on the ipad like rewardia. I loved monopoly, cluedo, trivial pursuit and trouble

My children do jobs at home to earn pocket money, but are slowly approaching that all important she where they can work outside the home in part-time jobs. Currently, they have a few after school activities and homework etc each week. My question is, do you have them give up the interests they have been cultivating for years, so they get the job early, or do you make them wait for the job? We are leaning towards them keeping the interests and keeping up the good grades at...
Carmel C 103964
Depends totally on the child. They are all different. There are many different ways to help your children learn things and become more independent.
- For some children that involves not being paid to do chores but by being asked to do 'free' chores as a way of being taught that not all worthwhile activities in life are financially rewarded. That some rewards and benefits in life come purely from being involved, doing their share, helping others, doing their part in the running of the household and helping in the care of themselves.
Out in the adult world not all activities are rewarded by money. It is an important lesson to learn.
-Hence some parents teach their children to think of 'the bigger pictures' by not paying them to work around the house, or paying them only for 'extra' work done outside of the normal chore expectations. Some parents choose to reward the children for good family participation with special outings or the occasional junkfood treat rather than cash.
Other parents expect the children to divide their pocket money into three. Savings, spending and charity donations. Each family is different and has different lessons they wish to teach their children to help them be stronger, independent adults.
- Paying jobs outside of the household can also teach many good life lessons as well as giving them a better appreciation of how finances work and the value of money. Once again it comes down to each child being different, their ages, each job being different and how well each parent is involved in guiding them on how to save and how to socialise publicly. Is it 'necessary' for them to have a job whilst still in school? Only the parents can really decide if that is best for their child. There are so many things that need to be considered. Some children will flourish
whilst others may not. Some jobs are fun. Some jobs are just tiring and non-beneficial in anyway.
- Likewise, extra-curricular activities like sports can teach many good life lessons and help to keep them fit and happier. Sometimes those activities may lead them into a small paid job, like helping to coach.
* Overall each parent needs to look at each of their children differently and as separate individuals with different personalities and needs. What is right for one is not right for all. One may flourish in a small part time job, whilst their sibling may do better being left to concentrate on the karate they love so much or by simply being left to study and help around the house whenever they can. These are the tough decisions that parents have to make and although seeking advice from others is awesome....in the end only you can truly know what is right for your offspring. Even when you make that choice, it may need to be tweaked as time goes on. If something doesn't work well, then move on and try something else. That will help them learn resilience and that change is ok and sometimes it is for the best.

Would you move countries at the drop of the hat? Only having less than a month to decide I've done it. It was a blast. I left NZ to go and live in Dallas, Texas (San Antonio, Arlington, and Grand Prairie) back in 2000. I lived there for the next 8 1/2 years and had a blast. Unfortunate circumstances meant that I had to move back to NZ, and it's where I had stayed since. Given the opportunity. I would so do it again in a heartbeat, but somewhere different...
Elizabeth J 447888
I am rather taken with Finland. It is known as the happiest country on earth. Their language is hard to learn I believe. I think I could live there for a few years. It is a year and a half since making a move in my own state and still haven't finished unpacking. No, don't think I could go through it again.

Can you give an unbiased opinion? Sometimes, in the least? Or, too difficult when it involves your close relationships?
Dimitri T 100433
in my humble opinion, we all have biased since it is our opinion based on our perceptions, which are also biased
27-Apr-22

Lots of people are on their phones but for how long? I see people that act like they can't stand being away from their phones but other can, so I want your opinion on this. Are you a phone freak or not? How many hours do you spend on your phone?
Elaine D 99552
I use it most of the time instead of a computer. I download and read books, do banking, play games, do surveys, take and edit photos, send texts and emails, research products, order products, watch videos, listen to music, read the news, find recipes and craft patterns, learn French and Chinese, book tickets and accommodation and ask questions about anything I want to know. That takes up most of my day! I very rarely use it to ring people.

As a precautionary measure - Are you a person who would video record your interaction with law enforcement and what do you think of cop-watchers in your country.
Elvira D 70287
a smartphone camera to me is very valuable because sometimes in an accident or emergency you can take photos of the damage especially rego plates and get other party contact details, sometimes it comes in handy if you don't have a pen on you.

So what are you actually supposed to do with old Electronic, Electrical & other "Non-Organic" things in this Brave New "Green" World"? Just had a message from a supplier of vacuum cleaner parts, I was looking for a charger to go with the handheld bit of one. Common make (Electrolux), 6 years old, still holds a charge, all that techie stuff! Supplier hadn't heard of it, gave up & it'll go in the bin, battery & all. Landfill. I'll buy a new one I've been...

Do you still have long lasting friendships? A year ago my best friend from Primary School in the UK died. Almost 65 years ago she arrived from India and I was the only one who made her welcome. We lost contact when she married an American and I an Australian. 20 years ago, through a friends' reunion site, we found each other and it was as if we had never been parted. I visited her in Texas and our husbands never got a word in as we laughed. reminisced and...

My mum was such a good friend when i was older, she collapsed and died in my arms of a brain embolism on xmas eve 1999. The pain eases but the hurt is still there. Always take the time to tell your freinds and family how much you love them.

It's been 2 years since I've seen my mother who lives in Europe. We were supposed to meet in March 2020 but I guess you know how it turned out. It's the longest we haven't seen each other and I don't even dare to make plans or dreams. I find it harder and more difficult month after month, especially that Europe seems to live and travel as they wish (at least during summer). Do you have any relatives you wish to see but can't?
Stephen F 84899
Have not seen my family in QLD for 2 years. And maybe at Xmas time, but the premier of QLD has changed her mind so many times -- often over very silly events --

Progress continues to be made on developing toilets that undertake fecal and urine analysis when you use it. This can detect disease and warning signs of poor health, and even send the results to your doctor over the internet. Would you use this toilet or is it too invasive? How would you feel if your toilet told you you've overinduldged in greasy foods, etc.? How would this work if a visitor used it? Is Artificial Intelligence development getting out of control?
Frank N
In my experience doctors have not been too good at detecting health issues, including some major ones. Given that, a toilet that provides health data could be an advantage.

Do you believe that the internet is a possible risk for starting WW3? We hear of occasionally, or read of situations of spying that goes on by some countries, esp by Nations of ... influence, Such as China, Russia, North Korea. There is only so much our Government Internet security teams.. can do to keep us safe. Some of these corrupt nations have a lot to gain by spying, and Westernized ..Nations .... like our own are worried! Spying on on other nations...
Catalina
There is no such a thing as corrupt nation. And no, the internet cannot start WW3. People can. People can prevent it as well. That’s what I think. Think about it.

What do you think of all of the recent remakes, past and present? Are new ideas becoming scarce? Have you actually found a production (remake) of an old film or TV series, that was enjoyable?? Well, regardless of how we feel, the film 'King Kong' has another remake.
Pauline T 68358
Many of the old movies are better than some of the rubbish and stories made today. The ne movies could not be classed as entertainment.

Apart from money, what have you been saving during COVID. For me it has been recipes. I now have so many I will be cooking a new main or dessert every day for the rest of my life!

If I see Santa, I will hug him straight away, and thank him for his generosity to all people especially to kids. I would tour him around my house, and I would give him some cookies. I will touch his face and his long white beard and ask him to have a selfie with me and my family. I will ask him this question that's stuck in my mind when I was a kid and up till now What it feels like, to be Santa Claus?"
Rifat H
It's said that The Legend of Santa Claus is : based on the historic figure of Saint Nicholas, a real-life Greek bishop who lived during the 4th century and was known for secretly leaving gifts at the homes of children. The name Santa Claus is from the Dutch 'SinterKlaas' which means 'Saint Nicholas'.
I think to 'see' Santa Claus would be like seeing the spirit of : a wonderful act of kindness such as giving presents to Children (of all ages young or old) which brings much Joy and Happiness! Something very bright, on a very special occassion!

The word "woke" has crept into our vocabulary and found a permanent home. But do people understand what it actually means? I see it used in the wrong context all the time. What does "woke" mean to you?
Lachelle B
It hasn't crept into our vocabulary. If you use it in the wrong context you need to improve your English. What I do hate is when people say tooken instead of taken! We will eventually degenerate into neanderthals again with the horrid grammar, speech and antisocial behaviour around nowadays. Grunt grunt!

It seems like imprisonment to me. I mean with DNA testing, the pill and women being financially independent. I'm not really sure what the drawcard is. Does anyone know? As one of my friends says: "Why get engaged when there is call waiting?"
Sarah G 76834
If you truly believe in God, you will realise why people get married. Marriage is a type of Christ and his bride, and when Christ returns he will take those who believe in him to be his bride, and they will live with him in bliss and everlasting joy for eternity. You see, the Bible teaches that the kingdom of God will be on earth. In the meantime by being married we are glorifying God who wants us to be faithful to our partner in this life, just as we must be faithful to God. Marriage is a big commitment but it is very worthwhile from a scriptural point of view.

The World Medical Association has said that boxing should be a banned sport because it causes fatalities and brain injuries. But life causes fatalities and brain injuries. Sport causes fatalities and brain injuries. Car accidents cause fatalities and brain injuries. Should we aim to ban everything? Boxing should not be banned. It's the risk the individual chooses to take when they play the sport.
Katzeye
I don't think it should be banned,if it is going to be banned then all contact sport should be banned. They just need to be wearing the right protection like helmets and mouth guards.

If so, what was the item? And was assembling it as easy as IKEA makes out? I am curious if they live up to their legend.
Margaret B 429563
Have only ever purchased 1 item (as far as I can remember) - got someone else to put it together for me as it was so complicated and takes so long to put it together. The process of finally finding it in the store, selection of the wanted item, collection from the assembly store down the bottom and then getting it paid for, let alone getting it home again is a mission in itself - who has the expertise or energy left to put the item together. Only impetus is saving the $70+ dollars they want for getting someone from their store to assemble it for you. Much prefer to go somewhere else & pay a bit more but get the item in one piece at home. I'm too old to try doing the gymnastics required to assemble the IKEA items.

I don't. I think it should be at the discretion of the cyclist. I mean The Netherlands is full of cyclists and helmets are not mandatory there. If it works for the Dutch, it can work for the rest of the world.

You cannot use the Netherlands as a comparison, their cities are designed for bicycles not vehicles, wear a helmet, stop being vein!!

Having children is a lifestyle choice and not everyone wants to hear children screaming or misbehaving on international flights, in restaurants and so forth. I think we all deserve choices. For me I absolutely love the Christmas season as the whole family comes together to get into the spirit. This is one season that we dec the house with Christmas decorations. I always remember my Grand parents house inside was like a mini Santa house. The one present I remembered the most was when I was little was the limited edition of the Teletubbies. My Parents told me they waited for a very long time to buy.
Rifat H
There are two Christmas occasions which stick to my mind as being the most memorable, simply because it just rained too much. Usually you expect it to be quite warm and dry on a Christmas day in Australia!

In driving at night I've been blinded by headlights on 4-wheel drives. I flash my lights to let the other driver know they are on high beam. Then the other driver flicks up to high beam. So I've been blinded by their low beams. Should the 4WD vehicles have their lights lowered so they are not so blinding as they are a higher vehicle than the ordinary car?
MoB
Probably, drivers now have no idea about lights. A car was following me on a dark night with no lights at all, when we pulled up at the lights I let him know that he didn't have his lights on, he said I can see so why should I put my lights on. I tried to explain that the lights were not for him to see with but for other people to see him. I got the finger, very nice. Knowing about lights on your car should be imperative if you are driving, it might help to lessen the number of accidents we have.

Yes I have seen one in Melbourne when I as a teenager and the nest day the media reported sightings of an UFO
EILEEN W 310556
I have twice seen one and I am basically a skeptic about flying saucers and Aliens. However on both occasions neither the Coastguard, Airforce, Police or anyone else can explain the lights I saw, which were brilliant blue when hovering, then flashed green as the zig-zagged back and forth for about 10 minutes over the ancient extinct volcano on our property, before flashing back to brilliant blue and disappearing over the horizon at an incredible speed.. They lit up the sky which woke my daughter on a neighbouring property on the second occasion. On the first occasion I was with about 6 other adults and we all reported our sighting. Several other people reported them on both occasions but we never received any logical explanations. Definitely unidentified flying objects

Is watching movies at your own home better than watching movies at the cinema? If so, why do you think is that? Do you believe that cinemas will stop operating within the next 10 years or so?
Claude H
Yes they will close. I watch everything at home on TV. I do not have to see the latest film and most of these are not worth watching anyhow.

I learnt to use industrial sewing machines at the age of 14 but sadly now I am retired can't afford to buy one so I can continue making and repairing clothing. I also have a really good eye for colours and when we built our last home I knew exactly what I wanted, they told us to allow 3 hours to choose everything, had it all sorted in less than an hour, colour of bricks, roof windows, door plus everything inside. I also had to teach myself how to cook and after 50 plus years married husband still asks where did you get that recipe from.

What is up with Hollywood today? Most of the "NEW" movies today are only rehashed old movies. Where is their imagination gone? The older ones were good in their day, so why rehash them and in the process ruining a good movie. Wake up scriptwriters and use some imagination and this doesn t mean special effects with imaginary characters. What do other people think?
Linda C
Years ago a movie was released into the cinemas and played for a few weeks or even months sometimes. Nowadays unfortunately, due to TV, cable TV, internet, netflix etc. they are barely even hitting the cinemas for a week and then hit the smaller screens. This means more and more movies have to be made and sadly many are rubbish. I agree, some are just noise and or trash and often the hype is just PR to get people to pay to watch them.
I rarely watch TV and never go to the movies these days. I do not have pay TV either.
Give me a good book any day.

New Zealand would be my ideal holiday destination. I have been wanting to go back for ages to see all of my friends and family. Always lots of activities or events to explore.

I mean these supposed plus-size women aren't even fat. Most of them are just average or what would be considered normal compared to the rest of the population. I mean Marilyn Monroe would be considered plus-sized in today's era and she's the most lusted after woman that ever lived. I think they should change the term to "buxom" or "sexy". Keep it positive!
adrienne H 312549
this whole discussion is based on personal opinion - i am a size 8 and find it offensive when people say i starve myself - or thin shame me (yes it happens often) - i am naturally this size i eat a lot, i exercise too and stay same size and think as long as you are happy in yourself it shouldn't matter what size you are - whatever words used can be offensive if we let them - i choose to smile and let it go

Sometimes we have so much to do and have only little time for it. Cleaning, washing, work, cooking, kids, shopping, walking the dog etc. Do you have any hints or advices for the people who struggle to find time to make everything done?
Judy CH
When we were scammed out of our life savings of $53,500 whilst building a new house we ended up with a mortgage and having to do all the landscaping ourselves so it is an ongoing thing, we just try and set out what needs doing the most and tackle it day by day.

Online shopping and express postage is great when it works, especially during lockdown. But with so many more parcels and packages being sent via post -- the care of fragile items by post office staff and couriers seems almost non-existent. I decided to order some bone china, they arrived smashed. I requested a replacement, the replacement also arrived smashed. Moral of the story: Don't order china or glass during Covid19 or do so at your own risk!
lordofthekitchen
Hi Elizabeth T, please tell me what the hell did we do before the internet, we went to the shops, we were fitter, and we just go on with things without whining, make that special trip, you might find that there is a world beyond your computer screen, everything does not have to be convenient, to many people are just using co-vid as an excuse to do nothing, yes it's serious, but Australians can fight anything, walk away from the screen, it will not jump off the desk or your lap to kill it self, and the walk will do you good

My hairdresser told me the perm is making a comeback. Will you be rushing out to get one? Perms are so 80s. I wonder if the blue rinse will come back in vogue?
Lachelle B
I decided to get a spiral perm in 1991. The poor hairdresser took five hours to complete it. The sun had gone down and I was still in her chair lol. I booked over the phone and when I went in she was surprised. My hair was past my butt and it's thick (but I did prewarn her over the phone). She deserved her $250 and I went to work the next day and was called telephone cord and poodle, but I liked it.

Apparently people who don't care what others think are happier and I'd agree with that. When you do what's best for you, things seem to run more smoothly.
Carmel C 103964
Caring about what others think makes me happy, because I enjoy caring.
I don't live as a hermit, I live in a community....so everything that other people do or think affects me either directly or indirectly.
If you are asking solely about whether my choices are based on what other people think about my choices..... then that is very different conversation. Do I care that someone I know hates it when I wear read. No I don't, because I enjoy wearing red. Do I care that my mother disapproves of me not visiting her more than I do...yes I do care...because I don't want her to feel sad or lonely.
Different situations result in different levels of 'do I care'. You can't lump them all under one heading and ask do you care or do you not....because it depends totally on what the situation or issue is. .

Seriously in 2020, with the pandemic and all the other crazy crap that is going on, an alien invasion would be a welcome surprise. And to be honest, I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid. Perhaps we could vote the Aliens into government. They would do a better job than our politicians are doing
Linda C
Not heard any news here. I don't believe in aliens per se but life on other planets is a possibility but in microbe form etc. Can't see some form of intelligent life as we have if you can call us that as we came about by circumstances that would not be repeated elsewhere. A spec of dust or a microbe started us off.
I think the Governments are doing OK although some not so much. We are having a pandemic and they are in a fine balancing act trying to save peoples lives and also their livelihoods.
This virus is so virulent and we have the idiots who just don't get it going about and spreading it more.
Everyone stay safe, follow the simple rules of social distancing, quarantining if necessary, get tested if sick or asked, do not shake hands or hug, do not gather in groups etc. If everyone did this together we would probably not have the situation in Victoria, NSW and now it seems in Queensland.

Every time I look at the internet, there will be a story online shaming a couple because of their age difference. Are people really that shallow? If you have a problem with age-gap relationships, YOU are the problem. Lust and love don't discriminate

If they care for one another there is nothing wrong. If it is for money then it is wrong. Money does not bring happiness. Sometimes the opposite.

I have noticed over the years that people who play a lot of video games become aggressive in their day-to-day life. I try not to judge people but this personality change is pretty hard to miss. Anyone else experienced this?
Phyrephly
I think it also a desensitivity to violence in general with constantly seeing increasingly realistic imagery of people being raped or blown up or stabbed/gutted with knives. Then, the lights/bells/whistles that go off when you might kill another being (in a game) to win the round or whatever, makes violence a thing to be used to maybe get ahead of the game in real life. Sadly, I think many of these ultra violent/realistic type games were/are designed to do this. When you stab someone to death, they don't really die- they just come back at you in the next round. If you do this countless times then you very well may in some small way expect the same to occur in real life, especially if you haven't yet fully developed a brain that can tell the difference (fully) between RL and a game situation or scene. Bully or brutish behaviour, towards women say, if very often associated with heroism. The 'hero' of the round got to be the hero because he just shot 25 "bad guys" up with an AK47. 7 and 8 year olds may hav

Have not rented movies or any TV series on YouTube and why would you?? There are free movie channels around, some of which show TV content so why pay for something when there is no need?

I used to know a delivery driver for a weight loss franchise and he told me they put laxatives in the food. I always wondered after that if it could be true. Nothing would surprise me in this day and age. But surely it would have to be listed as an ingredient?
Margaret C 77490
Also if that was the case then something like meals on wheels would do that if it was legal and same as our nursing homes but they don't as you can get in trouble plus with the technology today nothing goes undected they can even test our sewerage .but years ago before we had all this technology it might have happened like maybe 25 to 30 yrs ago as things were not very strict then either.
