Discussions of the day

Do you think traveling to a foreign county is a good idea? Would you need to speak some of that country's language or just get by on guessing what is going on? I have been to some countries like China, S. Korea, and Thailand and I found that most of the places I toured in those places the people could speak some English. I felt comfortable there. Just asking for others opinions as there are more countries I would like to visit.

My trip to Hawaii was cancelled last year and I do want to go while I am still young enough to drag my bag behind me but there will need to be next to no Covid out there. I don't want to go anywhere that requires sticking a stick up my nose, and I don't want to have to wear a mask, quarantine in my room for even one day and I certainly don't want to end up in a hospital in a foreign country. So no overseas travel for me for sometime yet.

Should children be allowed to have actual real decision making say in large life changing or altering decisions that will affect their families future? Such as 1.) Where a family will be moving and/or purchasing their new home. 2.) Should a family purchase a different model or style or size of vehicle then they normally would to help with world issues such as pollution, gas costs, or parking structures/lots to store all of a city's vehicles? 3.) Types of groceries or foods...
Paula J 395266
This has to be a joke. Children are just that, children, and to my mind children should be seen and not heard. Why would they have a say? They don't earn a living, they go to school to learn. It seems to me that parents do not want the responsibility of rearing children and want children to rear themselves. How can a child possibly have the maturity, experience and knowledge to even be given consideration in making life changing decisions. Children deserve a childhood free from such things, no worry or responsibility, that will come soon enough. If an adult feels the need to check with a child for permission to lead his or her life then perhaps they should remain childless. Is it any wonder there are so many horrid bratty children out there, they don't have a parent they have another friend. Stop frightening them with climate change, possible war, sustainability and all that other rubbish. Why scare them with things that might never happen. I remember the Cuban missile crisis and asked my father "will there be a war", he told me I was not to worry about it or be concerned but to let adults sort it out. Indeed they did and my father was right, as a child I had no need to worry. Do not put grown up heads on little shoulders. Let them be children.

We need to get out sometimes of the mood that we are into right now. Let's talk about 3 things that make you happy, no matter what are they. They could be a ray of sunshine in the morning or a piece of cake every week. Please, make it the easy way and explain why.
BLACK LIVES MATTER
1. Yesterday is history (and you can not change history (or your past) - move on (or try to move on). 2. Tomorrow is a mystery (enjoy the slow unfolding of the mystery - since it will be an unique experience for every homo sapien on this planet). Besides, who doesn't enjoy a mystery revolving around themself everyday for the rest of their lives? 3. Today is a gift - that is why it is called the PRESENT - still - Who doesn't appreciate getting a PRESENT - every day for the REST of their lives (I know a lousy PUN - HAHA)? CONCLUSION: Being above GROUND - is still infinitely better then being planted in the GROUND!

It's sometimes mentioned by the media, that WOMEN tend to have much poorer financial skills than men, and that does seem to be the case! Many women say they like to be --independent, but some of them prove otherwise. Some leave it to their partners to sort out the family finance. Many of those then...who break up with their spouses... are left High and Dry!. Some end up with little money when they part company with their Ex --partners. Why do you think...
Jenny L 591463
My grandmother had 2 small children during WW2 and they fled Malaya and ended up in Western Australia, she lost a baby on the journey. My grandpa ended up a prisoner for years. Any way my grandma was one of the first in Australia to put strawberries into vanilla ice cream. She made quite a bit of money for her self and her 2 children. They waited until grandpa could come back and then went back to the UK. My parents settled back here once they were married. I am proud to say I am in charge of our finances, I pay all the bills and I know where every cent has gone or where it needs to be. I do believe some women aren't allowed to have their own money in some marriages. Me kind of included the first time around. Not the case this time. It certainly makes a change. I still have my own bank account and I transfer what I want when I want.

With the current housing crisis in New Zealand getting out of control. Do you feel that it's up to Real Estate Agents to help the crisis by setting realistic house prices and rental prices instead of driving the prices up. These agents seem to have a lot of clout when it comes to "setting the price"
Joanne D 188999 NZ
i believe they go by the council valuations on setting the price for houses. Its the council that is at fault, making the land more valuble which in turn they set the price for how much people pay in land rates.

Say a couple of your friends decided that they wanted you to go to the casino with them because one of the friend's birthdays. You hit the jackpot I mean big jackpot how would you spend it, how much would you save, and why?
Imperia S
first I would not go to the casino, I only buy lotto tickets, and if ever I won money I would share with my sons, plus I would give the birthday girl a few dollars depending on how big a jackpot and the rest I will buy an RV and travel the country from one end to the other, I miss my traveling days, thanks to NSW Premier that let the dreaded Covit In

If you ask your child to keep plate in sink or do laundry is it wrong? Are parents responsible until they turn 18?
Michelle S 553303
I had 5 children who are now aged between 28 and 39. When they were growing up I and my now ex husband had his Italian father living with us. He had worked so hard all his life after being a prisoner of war in WW2 and became medically retired by the time my eldest daughter was born and she is now 35. Because his wife abandoned him AND the 2 children who were 3 and 5 at the time and there wasn't a pension available for him to recieve in order to be able to keep his family together, the children stayed with grandparents and great grandparents on their mothers side, and sometimes in the Catholic orphanages which were very cruel as was their maternal GM. By the time I met my children's father at age 15 Giuseppe would leave at 4:30 am and bot arrive back until about 6pm at night and then go to bed and start all over again. I mention this because it's important to the story. I didn't fully realise until about 20 years ago when I gained a little perspective and started to head into my 40's just what a wonderful man I'd been blessed to know. As I had more children my FIL would do the laundry, being fully retired now, the cooking, a lot of the cleaning and garden maintenance, including having a large vegetable garden that fed us fresh vegetables. Because of this being waited on hand and foot my children didn't learn to do the chores which I had learned to do, without argument, since I was a very young child. I am not lying but stating a truth that my husband grew up very lazy and unmotivated and this, combined with their grandfathers constant help, prevented my children from developing a disciplinet hat I had in spades having come from a typical nuclear family of the 1960's with traditional gender roles. My children have however developed their own discipline and now are functioning members of society and appreciate just what a blessing they did have growing up with a grandparent living with them. Giuseppe too got what HE wanted: :a family with children he could help raise and be at home with to watch them grow! My children talk about their grandfather often and his ashes sit not 2 feet from where I write this in bed having lost him at age 97 3 years ago. But children enjoy getting mum a nappy or "folding" up a face washer or carrying swmething for whatever parent is taking care of the child at the time. It gives them happiness and pride in their achievements and that's ALWAYS a good thing! Thank you for reading this and have a nice day.

Some of us are in different countries, others from different provinces. We live here, there and a few more places. What dishes or foods do you find yourself cooking or eating? And, why? I'm interested and hopefully, recipes will be shared!
Melissa S 393323
I like to try recipes from different eras, the ones from the 1930s are particularly good for anyone on a tight budget as they were developed for the depression into the era of food rationing during WWII

Do you feel wedding bands are necessary? Should a ring symbolize your love? Or is love, enough?
Mr Blobby
Maybe I am "old school" but I believe both partners should show their love and commitment to one another by wearing wedding bands.

I had intended to install solar panels on the roof of the building that I own...these panels will not only meet all my power needs but also feed back MORE power to the grid...my body corporate is actively doing everything possible to stop this...THIS IS MADNESS....body corporates need to be forced to allow solar panels...by law...if we can't install solar panels..how are we going to make any difference to climate change...all these little self important...

No!, keep them away, give little people a bit of power, it goes to their heads, solar panels are good for the world, some little idiot should not have a say, fight on, you're doing a good thing.

It is already one year late, nobody in Japan wants it ... nobody else can go ... it is still massively expensive ... what is the point?
Elizabeth T 396096
We don't need ANY Olympics. Waste of time and money. If athletes consder this their job, then they can PAY to go to work like everyone else. If the International Olympic Committee want to have one, then they should PAY to set up a site dedicated to it and just hold it there forever, like a corporate headquarters. IOC is only interested in bribes. Why should countries have to bid for it? Where does this bid money go (backpockets of IOC along with any other bribes paid to them)

You have inherited a vast sum of money, from a senior ... family --member! Or, got lucky in the lottery's. What would you do with it? Maybe ... travel, buy a boat, house, help out with others in the family? Donate some of it, or even invest part, or all of it! How exciting! So many things you could do with a lot of money.
Bex
If I won a million dollars, undoubtedly, I would wet myself with excitement. First thing I would do is buy some new undies.

Being seniors we are concerned about what happens if our dogs outlive us. Fortunately our daughter overseas has written a promise that she would return to Australia as she is passionate about them too. Have you made arrangements about the future of your pets?
Joe B 288252
No, my poor old Ragdoll is on her last legs and waiting for God. The vet has checked her and says she is not in pain but just fading so to wait a bit yet but it’s hard to see her like that. She’s 20 so not bad eh?

One of life s many wonders, for me, is heritage and cultures. Many are steeped with the knowledge of it and others not so much. I am a blend. I am Tsalagi (Cherokee - American Indian), African-American, and Irish. I know enough about they all, but never all. How do you feel about your heritage and it s culture? Or, is there anything you are willing to share about your heritage to enlighten some of us with an additional awe?

I'm Australian as was my parents & grandparents, why do I have to bend over backwards to appease the indigenous people of this country that my family help build to today's standards I'm getting sick and tired of the racist remarks of the aboriginals, they get insulted with the word black but wear black shirts and clothing with their own flag on it and everywhere else.

A few local parking lots. I'm almost afraid to go there during peek hours. They drive like crazy people and I'm fearful of an accident!
Joe B 288252
Parking lots are shared spaces with pedestrians so extra care is needed. I really hate it when you’ve backed half way out and some brainless kirp roars around the back looking so indignant and flips you off. No patience, 5 seconds and the job is done

If you had the ability to see into the future -- say 10 years from today -- would you want to?
Rifat H
Yoda's philosophy about sensing the future...Go Yoda! ;-)
Yoda : Premonitions, premonitions. These visions you have... Anakin : They are of pain, suffering. Death. Y : Yourself you speak of, or someone you know? A: Someone. Y : Close to you? A : Yes. Y : Careful you must be when sensing the future Anakin. The fear of loss is a path to the dark side. Anakin : I won't let these visions come true, Master Yoda. Yoda : Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed that is. A: What must I do, Master Yoda? Y : Train yourself to let go... of everything you fear to lose. Darth Sidious : I have waited a long time for this moment, my little green friend. At last, the Jedi are no more. Yoda : Not if anything to say about it I have!

I find so many young ones nowadays are always on sick leave or just ring in sick. I have over 100hrs owing to me. I'm hardly ever sick but when I do I feel guilty ringing in. I know I must get over that feeling guilty. Oh well, at least I'm reliable.

Self pitying too.If you are genuinely sick there is no reason to feel guilty taking sick leave. However as such a reliable worker your boss could look at paying you for some of the days owing to you .I always did as an employer .

Should the government make COVID-19 vaccination compulsory as many business are?
Margarret F
Absolutely NOT compulsory. The flu vaccination system works without being compulsory - why should anything else change this procedure. Malaria kills millions of children per year too and measles is much more contagious. There is much to consider.

Here in Australia most of the population is in major cities. Australia is known as a wide brown land. Is there a willingness to move to more rural areas if fast rail ever goes ahead or jobs created in large rural towns. Could people in other countries reflect on their situation if it reflects this situation.
Carolyn 395035
I live in a rural area and absolutely love it. Rail - hmmm - what rail??? - We used to have one in Cowra, NSW, but the government decided to close it because it was not making enough money. Same thing happened with the airport. Now the only way people can get here is by train to Bathurst and bus the rest of the way, or you can drive the four hour drive. With due respect to Council, they need to try and get our train lines open again.

Well it's been a roller coaster of a ride this year globally. I have met some great people on Rewardia and hope next year will be positive for everyone. I thought I would go out with a poem that sums up a typical Christmas for our family. Aunty May has come to stay with Uncle Bob close by her side, I let out a groan, the kids all moan and my partner's gone to hide! I love self-checkout. It's quick, easy and I don't have to deal with other human beings. Perfection. I know some people detest self-checkout though. I am not one of them.
Phyrephly
I'm afraid I don't have very much luck with the machines, they don't seem to even what to take my money! You can hear the machines moaning when I walk up to them! And yeah, agree with David S, jobs being eroded.

The best deals are usually immediately after Christmas. This because the retail stores want to sell the materials they have overstocked on. And want to do this as quickly as possible. What is your experience?
Jenny L 591463
Merry Christmas every one, let's hope there is more compassion and love in the world in 2026. Have a great time no matter where you are and with what you have planned for the festive season, Good luck, stay calm and enjoy good foods with family and friends.

No matter how good-looking a car may be, safety should always come first. As well as looking out for features such as ABS, traction control, and airbags, you should also check the safety record. What features or characteristics do you value most in a vehicle?
Linda C
I like the older cars with manual transmissions and wind down windows which are plus for safety. If you break down you can push the car and even push start it. If you go into water you can wind the windows down and get out not so in electric cars etc.
There is so much going on in the new cars that it is distracting the drivers.

What food do you love that other people seem to think is odd? Or what food do you loathe that others seem to love? I really like coriander (aka cilantro for the US users) as do my sisters. I use it a lot when making Thai dishes. My adult 'kids' hate it, to them, it tastes like soap. (clearly their dad's gene's influencing it) I can't stand olives or oysters, but they are both quite popular with others. How about you ? Do you have foods you love/ hate...
Rebecca B 614374
I love most seafood but do not like oysters. The appearance of them and the texture is revolting. Yet many people seem to think they're marvellous. I also think kangaroo is disgusting too. Plenty fellow Aussies seem to think it's marvellous, but to me it smells and tastes like it's off.

I had a MIL from hell. Enough said on her. The daughter was much the same, though cut from the same cloth as my Mum used to say. My girlfriend's MIL actually was another. My friend had 2 young boys and all were little surfers (I live in Queensland, Australia). MIL decided they should not have the blonde curls (the hair was not that long, and they looked lovely) and so she buzz cut it all off. I would have never trusted her with my kids again as she knew...
Janet 1621979
In general I have found most In Laws are what you make them. I have seen MIL's that have been very pushy ..... but you just have to set boundries. If your In Laws are doing something you are not happy with - be honest AND TELL THEM (politely). Something like "I appreciate what you are saying ... but these are my kids - my rules". If a MIL is to cut your child's hair without FIRST checking with you - I can assure you she would NOT DO IT TWICE in my house. She would get very cool treatment from me. I do agree that it is often a MIL who is not happy about who her son has chosen..... a very stupid woman I say.

Have you ever served on a jury before? I have not, but I know people who have. Some of them even got paid to serve because the trial went longer than expected. Would you like to be on a jury?
gordy
Yes I have, twice. I took it very seriously because you are making a decision on someone else's life/situation. Unfortunately some people were more interested in getting home than making the right choices. I take pride in saying I stuck to my beliefs and acquitted a young man accused of wrongdoing. The judge was pleased with the verdict. I was very proud of the decision and outcome. Not everyone is cut out for this service but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

My problem is that I always forget to eat lunch. I'm not hungry, and I get busy during the day. My meter is happy, though. I googled to see how many meals we should eat each day, and it varies. I've read articles saying we could just eat one big meal each day. I've read articles saying we should eat 6 small meals a day. How many meals do you eat? Do you think eating only breakfast and dinner is a bad thing? Or should we beat eating 5 or 6 times a day. How often do...

I admit, I have a smoothie nearly every morning for breakfast. I often have a quiche or peanut butter sandwich for lunch, and meat and vegies for dinner, (about 3 x a week) I recently read the Whole meal Bread with Smooth peanut butter, No sugar/salt, actually helps your weight and digestion when eaten before bed. So that's my new favorite bedtime snack. It seems to help. Ive been dieting for 6 months. I lost 25 kgs but am a bit stuck for loosing the last 20-15 kgs. Checkout aisle and impulse Items designed to give you another opportunity to purchase. While you are waiting in line, you look over and see some candy or gum. There are also magazines and other items at the checkout. This is a prime spot for stores to sell impulse items. What are your thoughts? How do stores get us to buy more?

Don't get sucked in. It's a mind game. Your mind is the decider in the end, you decide to purchase that on a whim. Then the market wins because they got your money. I never impulse purchase, and It's like ads, I mute ads so I do not buy into that crap

Every year we exchange gifts with my sons-in-law, dad and aunt. Most times we do it through my daughter, so we don t even see each other. Many times we get gifts we don t want and either re-gift them or give them to my daughter. I prefer not to exchange gifts. My daughter says just don t give them one. They are not buying for us in expectation of a gift in return. What do others think about this??
Michelle Z 978367
Christmas time to me is all about giving not receiving. If you really want to give a gift donate a child's toys under the Kmart tree for a child in need.
Or perhaps donate an amount that you can afford to charity.

When we were younger in the 1970s and 80s. We would have what they called block parties. And we would shut down the street, and all of our neighborhood and neighbors would come out and set up chairs, tables, games, pools, food, all kinds of things to keep the community together and unified. We don't see that anymore. Nowadays, some of the wonderful things that would keep communities together have gone away, which has had the effect of the families and...
Paula J 395266
Block parties have never been a part of the Australian culture but when I lived in America they were a big thing and very enjoyable, especially at Halloween time. Halloween had rules which don't seem to apply here in Australia. You went out after dark and only knocked where the outside light was on. They would close the street, set up trestles and serve hot cider and treats. The entire street would be out, and it was a very long street with house numbers into 4 digits. It was great to get out and meet the neighbours.

Many of us are told "Hey you're a natural! Have you ever considered ... as a career?" We're often told to pursue our talents, but is this good advice? Isn't it better to learn how to strengthen our weaknesses, which would offer possibly more of an opportunity for personal growth? How many of us have made a career out of our talents anyway? What do you think? Which method have you used, and how has that worked for you?
Aamiya (Sri Lanka)
Depends on what your talents are I guess.
I don't really have any talents unless you count dealing with people. I hate it though! I'm a Legal Executive so I deal with people all the time so I guess I have kind of used my talent.

I was taught to be better 10 minutes early, than one minute late, no matter where you are going, because people who are always late have no respect for anyone. Even for any appointments or interviews, as if you are late, you are going to be stressed & panicking for not being there on time. Does anyone else think the same as me?

Last year I had my grandsons christening. I ordered him a personalised money box, engraved with his name & date of christening, 16 Oct 2022. Since the occasion, I have pondered on if the date on his money box should have been his date of birth, 12 Jan 2022, or the christening date? I am interested in people's thoughts as to which is correct?

I don't know I'm not Catholic. We bless babies in our church. Is a christening, giving a baby a blessing? I think it's wonderful to give babies spiritual blessings. :)

What’s the point of wanting a movie made of a book you have already read, you already know the plot, know how it ends and know that it will never be as good as your imagination made it when you read it… Of course if you have dementia then that would excuse some people I guess..

How much do you think the content of your dreams is actually significant? I have heard that if someone appears in your dreams, that they are thinking of you. I don t actually see how this can be true, but a lot of people do believe this. Why or why not do you believe that dreams actually have meaning?
Pato Lo Duck
What I can't understand is how I can dream things that I have never seen before. Complex machines or equations I have no hope of understanding in real life. Places I have never been to before in exquisite detail. People I have never met... It is all quite strange...

What time should different aged teenagers be given for a curfew in this day and age? What factors come into play when deciding a time that is reasonable to you? If your children are grown, or you never had any, please still share your feelings and/or what worked for you? If you have no feelings on the subject, that's fine as well. Non-parents still can have ideas on the subject.

Of course teen of all ages need curfews. School nights especially. Nothing good ever happens after midnight still applies today.

Mum irons everything, including t-shirts & towels, what do you iron?
Rhian C
Nothing.. I don’t even own an iron! I used to do ironing as a kid as part of chores but I wash, hang on line, fold and put away, I don’t have creased clothes either so don’t see need to waste my time ironing,, would rather use that time more productively!

I have recently started using the new Laundromat that has opened up down the shops. Wow, just like everything else, the prices have risen. It's now $6 for a small washing load and $8 for the larger machine. I have no idea what the dryers cost. Luckily, I only do a load of clothes and a load of linen once a fortnight. Do you think they are fair prices or too steep?
Tom S Qld
If you go to a laundromat once a week for 2 years
($8 x 52 wks x 2 = $832)
A good new washing machine will cost $800, then after 2 yrs the washes are free. The machine will probably last for 20 yrs.
If you go to a laundromat once a week for 20 years
($8 x 52 wks x 20 = $8320)
Buy a washing machine!

As you age, do you find yourself reminiscing on your earlier years? Do you look back with fondness or regret? Would you change some of your choices, or are you happy with your outcome? What would you do differently?
Michelle S 553303
I'm almost 58 and my dad is 83 years old. I was emailing him on Monday and I told him how sorry I was that it was a very difficult day for him. You see it would have been my brother's 56th birthday except that he died 3 years ago in a car crash. As it was just my mum, dad, brother and myself growing up it is now only my dad and I who survive today as my mother passed away nearly 20 years ago. He said to me "Michelle, every day is a memory day". I told him that I'm finally old enough to understand that each day you find yourself reflecting on memories from the good, the bad and the ugly things that you've experienced in life and I find myself starting to play the "what if" game! What if I hadn't gone out to the disco and met the man who would have become my husband and the father of my children when I was supposed to be staying at a friend's house and not going out at all or what if I had been content to stay at the house my family had been living in, paid that mortgage off and reduced my full-time work to part-time and stayed home more often with my kids, instead of insisting that we renovate the home that I had inherited 75% of which was really my dream to do and to honour the memory of the ladies who gave it to me, but ultimately led to my husband going off with another woman he met while I was at work doing night shifts as an RN and then led to me ultimately having to walk away from and go bankrupt. I could do this all day but the nights are the worst. I don't think when I was younger that I could perceive of me at 57, hardly able to walk, with very little money and without an ability to do the things I used to love, including my job, and existing in constant pain. THIS me was abstract like a Picasso and bore no resemblance to who I am today and I think that we all reach a point in our lives where we can reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly and some of us can find peace in that, but I look back on my life, on my kids and EVERYTHING else and I ABSOLUTELY wish, with ALL my heart, that I hadn't ever been born! Thanks for reading.

I have a very large backyard pool with all the required fencing and surrounds. The pool inspector visited our house, and it did not pass inspection because of a spindly, scraggy shrub outside the fence the first time that inspection cost $350, the final inspection we passed another $200 paid. We also replaced one fence that was deemed pool safe a few years ago, but is now longer deemed safe. We will have to pay to have the pool inspected all over again in 3 years time...

I m facing the very real possibility to have full upper dentures. I m very afraid. Many people wear dentures, I d like to ask your experiences. Is it very uncomfortable? Is it possible to get used to it?! If you have one, do you wear it all the time? Thank you
Disie
I just got a partial upper plate but wasn't ready for the lack of taste and texture. Not having the food on your palate takes that. You still taste, but it's not as intense. I actually cried when they told me. So I understand your hesitancy. The one question I'll ask is; Is it necessary for you to eat properly and still have healthy gums and teeth? If so, keep your teeth for as long as possible,

Cast iron is the safest of all the metals if you're not prone to overdosing on Iron so it's great for women of reproductive age and growing children (due to needing extra iron) but not so great for men.
The most inert material you can cook with is soda lime glass or borosilicate glass. Stay away from leaded glasses which leach lead.

I have never been a fan of Lego because little bits would go underneath furniture, or I would tread on them with bare feet. When we first moved to our present home, we discovered a weird-looking plant called homalocladium platycladium. It is also known as a tapeworm plant or centipede plant, which describes it well. It has flat segmented branches instead of the usual rounded ones. Do you have any unusual plants?

Do you have pets? If so, what kind? Do you have any interesting or unusual pets? Did you grow up with pets? My daughter has 2 rescue cats who are real characters & who have brought much joy into our lives. I like dogs, but I do prefer cats, as I love their independent nature. They can also be very affectionate & love attention. I didn't grow up with pets and if it were just me, I probably wouldn't have any, but they have brought much joy to the house with...
Paula J 395266
When I suggested this topic it was ignored. Perhaps it was the way I framed it. I am a cat person and while I have had dogs it's cats I can't live without. My 16 year old lady left us last September so I now only have 5 boys. They are all rescues so come with health problems but I love them, not like children but family members who are animals. My one rule is that they don't have human names, and I never use the same name twice, the name also has to suit the personality. All 5 have long fur which annoys my husband as he feels they shed, they don't really as they usually leave it on chairs or clothing. I have always had at least one cat other than when I lived overseas. All of the cats has it's own personality and all 5 own me. They are neurotic, bossy, fussy but love unconditionally and get very annoyed if we go away for any reason. They are very independent, dogs are far too needy for my liking, but they know if I'm not feeling well and will stay with me even if they have to hiss and growl at anyone that attempts to get closer. They help me garden, they always want to go with me when I walk and will hide so that I can't see them until they get frightened by a car or dog and I hear them crying. I had to carry one home from almost a block away one day and the bus scared him so much he almost got away from me. They are sticky beaks who have to know where I am at all times. They help me when I'm sewing or making the bed, oh that's great fun, they also enjoy a feather duster, getting into drawers, cupboards and washing baskets. I was missing one once and looked everywhere for him but I was pretty sure he hadn't left home. The following morning I turned the dryer on to air my towels and I heard a loud banging and when I looked his little face was looking through the dryer door at me. He had gotten in while I left the dryer open as I took the towels off the clothesline the previous afternoon. I hugged him so hard as it could have ended quite badly and he was very forgiving but hungry. Ny eldest son keeps birds and doesn't like cats, he says they are sneaky, my daughter has no pets but prefers dogs while my youngest son must take after me and has 5 cats. My grandchildren call me the crazy cat lady but they all love my cats. The feeling sadly is not reciprocated.

It's thought that one of the reasons for rising rentals is the availability of short stay accommodation, run by them companies like those of Airbnb. Some people are saying that these companies should be regulated as they are helping to force up market rents, and they are taking advantage of the market to earn money for their particular-- company, and preventing some people from accessing long term rental properties. Your Views?
Jenny L 591463
We had a brand new house we rented to a couple with 2 children for 4 years while we did our trip around Australia and I would never rent any thing again. The amount the real estate said was normal wear and tear was just total BS. Who can blow up an oven in 4 years? Tried to fix the water tank after their puppy chewed the wires, totally failed to any way. So with short term rentals I think the damage could be worse and I would never do that because there is no respect for other peoples belongings. Use and abuse then some of the better tenants are tarred with the same brush. Like most things there is always some one whom will spoil it for every one else. I read about a couple with 2 children and another on the way having to live in a tent because there aren't any rentals available in their area. It's sad and temporary housing needs to be arranged for these people. As much as I wouldn't rent any thing again surely there are others that would. Some are selling up as interest rates rise and this will only add to the problem but then a first home buyer gets a chance to buy. Rent is dead money so if the younger ones can buy it is better but then are they still going to be around that area in 3 or 4 years? It's a hard one that is for sure.

Recently, Elon Musk, the world's richest person, has taken control of Twitter. What are your views on this? Will he make Twitter better or worse?
Luke W 72035
I don't understand why Elon and Twitter is such a big deal. Not to sound condescending but the majority of the world don't actually care about Twitter. On a side note: Notice how almost every time Elon is reported on in the news etc he is either doing some very silly dance or pulling a weird face when they show footage of him? Doesn't matter what channel. Does the media feel threatened by him or something?

Ok, that was a long winded title. As an example, my youngest daughter was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum in the last year at 19. It is something that apparently often goes unrecognised in girls who are "high functioning" as they become adept at masking symptoms. Anyway, long story short, I am pretty sure as a woman in my 50's I am on the spectrum as well. Things that I had always thought of as just my own weird quirks are most likely symptoms. I also...
John W 577766
You are not strange. We are all on the spectrum. Some a little crazy, others totally nuts. It only becomes a problem when it leads to dysfunction in your life. Labeling oneself can be detrimental because it is limiting. They are designed so professional people can group a set of behaviours easily. Do not take it seriously unless it becomes debilitating. Remember all these little quirks and traits make up the unique person you are.

Bugalugs
So long as Governments, politicians and self-styled Do-Gooders who think they know better than everyone else stay out of the way and keep their mouths shut we have all the freedom we need. Abolish Political Correctness, allow people to think and say what they really think.
Abolish the Greatest Curse ever visited upon Human beings: Religion - at least Religion as it is today which has been bastardized again by people who think they know better than everyone else, who deliberately misinterpret and selectively use parts of books such as the Bible, the Koran etc. to persecute others who don't agree with them.

What is your preferred method of tanning, and how often do you tan? Do you use anything to prevent damage if you use a sunbed or tan naturally? Do you have any flawless tanning tips and tricks?
Rod R 101788
I slip, slip, slap. Spent most of my life in Nth Queensland & have a certain amount of tan that is permanent.
If you're going to lay or be in the sun try not to do it between 11 & 2.
A certain amount of sun each day with SPF is healthy, a particular level of brown isn't.

I've never won anything big but I was grateful for small wins which came along when I could really use it. I know one person who won a large amount, she thought her own crap didn't smell. I'm the luckiest woman anyway, three grown kids and two beautiful grandkids. Survived breast cancer.

In general, homework can help children practice skills, work on projects and learn time management. You can help children by making time and space for homework, helping them get organized, and being positive. When children are having homework troubles, it's best to speak to the teacher.
Lynn A 461499
As long as the child does his or her own homework. Often I found parents had done the homework for the child, and what is the point of that. Homework is a valuable way to practice skills learned in class. If the child can't do the homework, the parent should inform the teacher so those skills can be revised until the child is able to do the work independently. Also, I agree that excessive homework is not good - a maximum of half an hour should be long enough for primary school students.

Does anyone else feel as though time is speeding up? Or is it just my mother and I, who feel this way? It just seems like, one minute it's Monday, and, what seems like only 5 minutes later, it's Friday. (Well, maybe a little longer, but you get the drift). Love to hear your thoughts, on this one.
Imperia S
It sure is, no sooner is Monday and it's back to Sunday, my friends say because I am always busy, and don't take a break, but I think these last 2 years scrambled everyone's thinking, I have 3 calendars cause if I don't cross the day off, I will never know what day it is, plus I have a white board cupboard and its full of appointments due, and all sorts, some times I think I am loosing the plot

Some people have a nightly before-bed ritual. Shower/bath, teeth, hair in rollers (am I showing my age, with that one?). herbal tea, or all or none of the above. I like to have a chamomile tea, a small slice of cheese and a few crackers, maybe a bit of fruit, if I'm feeling energetic - not usual - brush my teeth and occasionally clean my face with a cleanser wipe, say my prayers then hit the hay, usually between 10.00 and 11.00pm. What is your nightly routine?
Carol S 657195
I am alone and have depression and anxiety and no family. I do what I want when I want, but that doesn't fit into society. I might go to bed at 10 p.m. or 5 a.m. and sleep most of the day. I try to get my meds on time and eat once in a while. I hate routines. They were not made for me, but my counselors have been fighting me for years to get into a routine. If I'm happy, the world will have to adjust to MY schedule!

What are your thoughts about "value" we can find anywhere these days? You would think that paying more equals getting better, safer and healthier products of higher quality, but is it always the case?
Bugalugs
No of course a Higher Price does not mean better value. Take a trip into one of those very up-market Department Stores and those dinky little Boutiques offering, supposedly Designer Gear, Exclusive Brands by Haute Couture Houses of Fashion. Grossly over Priced garments but ALL Made in China, India, Bangladesh and other slave-to super-low Income countries. We went in to one of those Department Stores, up the escalator and into the Women's Fashion Floor. There at the top of the escalator was a display of a well-know designer. Faded Jeans with selectively placed "Tears", Price? A not-so-cool $695.00! The top? It looked liked a woman's vest-cum-Tee shirt with a tiny single row of "lace" around the neckline. The price? An equally not-so-cool $435.00!
My female companion unbuttoned the top couple of buttons on her blouse to reveal an identical top with exactly the same single row of "lace". Price at the Local Market? $15.00. Our local Op Shop sells faded Levi Jeans with naturally worn, strategically sited holes - just like the Designer jeans at $695 for just $10! - I know this because they were my jeans! The only reason I was not still wearing them was because I don't think it is appropriate for Mature Age Men and Women to dress as if they were in their late teens! Brand, Price and Designer Labels mean Nothing.

Yellow light means: A. Slow down or B. Speed up? We all know it means A so why do people do B?
Imperia S
it sounds that some states don't have the flashing amber to warn the drivers that the lights will be changing to amber so they can start to slow down before you get to the intersection and these days every set of lights have cameras, and red lights regardless to the situation a fine will be issued

I've always felt sorry for smokers, they are demonised by everyone. Yet governments don't mind taking revenue from tobacco tax. What a pity smokers can't be treated like human beings instead of pieces of garbage.

Australia has let people down who want to learn a trade or in agriculture. Employers found it expensive and hard to accommodate an apprentice who needs to attend college in the bosses time for long periods. In some trades there may only be one trades person who has employed an apprentice and without the apprentice the trades person cannot do his work as he has no assistance. Some of the training should be done in the time of the apprentice not the employer. Proper training...

We need to bring back the Technical Colleges we used to have that taught young people who preferred to work with their hands parallel with High Schools where young people's capabilities belong in the academic arena. Australia should be concentrating on advancing the schooling needs of our own young people and not investing in the education of overseas students who either go back and take their knowledge to their own country or stay and soak up the employment here leaving our qualified brilliant young people to what? Go on the pathetic dole and be labelled "dole bludgers". We need to think smart, act smart and we will have our own smarter home grown workforce. Keep it simple and keep it here.

I don't think that people are too different between all the various states in Australia...and I think that this applies in the USA as well. I don't understand why Queenslanders cannot buy alcohol in a supermarket ... or why Victorians can buy certain drugs in theirs ... is driving at 110 only the best speed in certain states..and in others it is set at 100?.....there is really very little difference between us...it IS just one country...why can't we just have one...
peter w 94893
Haha, it's simple really, It depends how much revenue the various states need. For example, if not enough people break the speed limit at 110 then reduce it to 100 etc.

Live TV at one point dictated what we did and when...being able to record it... loosened that hold...but now...even the channels store their own content...and streaming from other sources makes live TV increasingly meaningless...it was seldom ever live in the first place...and you can get better live news elsewhere anyway...and earlier...is there any point in it being there anymore?...who watches it?
Maria B 89860
How can something "LIve" be dead? When we first got our TV, in the olden days, mainly used it for entertainment ie watching the flicks. It is not a member of our family like pets are. It is our servant to meet are needs which is not as luxurious as some. hank goodness for free to air it still serves us well.

So before having a child I have seen mothers clubbing etc. Fathers doing same. After baby, mother compromise and stay home to look after but fathers continue with same life. Why is that the case and what can change that.

We both worked til I decided to chuck in my job because I was sick of daycare spending more time with the kids than us. I was also earning more as a labourer than my partner in the foundry. I never wanted a night out clubbing and he stopped going to his Friday nights out with the boys after work. It wasn't about us anymore but our boys so our social lives were irrelevant. And he may wear the pants in the house but I'm the one that buys them! Lol!

How do you describe best friendships ? A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future and accepts you just the way you are. Good friends are like stars. I've heard, and read of some men, being treated unfairly due to custody matters. Some men lost their .. kids, family-home, money, other assets, due to these -disputes. Some have even suicided, or become really sick. Most kid's get awarded to mothers. Do you think the family court is biased in favour of women? What can be done to change the status quo?
Maria B 89860
Didn't someone once say "the law is an ass"? A very simple statement but there is no simple solution when it comes to broken families. Everyone gets battle fatigue going through the process and children get more and more confused by the to and fro state of affairs and sometimes even thinking that they are the cause of it all.

The dog house
I believe it is a waste of money. I know someone who spends $30 a week and others even more. Calculate that over a year and that could go towards a holiday or something you might need in the house. I prefer to work for what I have and manage my own expenses. Sometimes money can bring more issues than it is worth.

People in wealthy countries are entitled to healthcare and a basic education by law. Is it fair that this free education stops once we have completed High School, or should those who want it get a free passage? Should the poor be able to attend college or university without having to gain a scholarship or bursary first? Should you be able to get that expensive operation at no cost whatsoever? Is education and health being ignored or is it ok because the government is spending...
Aisha A 379399
I think that less funding should be given to private schools and hospitals should have adequate equipment and hospital beds especially when COVID-19 is still an issue. And having a degree can't guarantee you a job. I wish that the government would offer free courses for people who are struggling to get jobs.

I have syngenesophobia. I function (better) - alone and on the go (which is why I like traveling). In addition, have never called anywhere - home - just a place of residence - can not answer your QUESTION.

A lot of my neighbors, here in the States, have "Ring" doorbells installed. Or, another type of technology to replace their "doorbells". Another thing, many have so many gadgets, from speakers to their light fixtures being operated through the internet. It s like a spy organization cinematic plot, from earpieces to hidden cameras on one's bow tie. It's incredible, yet very impersonal. What are your thoughts on these Technological Devices?

It can be good for your security but it can also be highly invasive. Care needs to be taken with your liberty. On a lighter side one time when we were in a holiday home my friends wife was on dinner duty when the power failed and the stove went off, she said bugger and just put it in the microwave....AND??? Lol.... I laughed so much she biffed a sausage at me. Too much reliance on modern technology can be hazardous...lol

If you read the news, you would have heard of the saga surrounding preferential treatments for the top 3 tennis players where they can enjoy freedom in Adelaide while the other lower ranked players have to suffer strict quarantine conditions in Melbourne. The fact is, they are the top players and they have greater bargaining powers and SA government accepts them to go there as long as they play the exhibition matches. I think it s fair. They attract audiences therefore they...

The top three tennis players should have been treated the same as the rest. I agree the top players do have greater bargaining powers but the government shouldn't have allowed it to happen.

Share what phobias do you have? Here is the list of mine: - Catoptrophobia / Eisoptrophobia - Fear of mirrors (Partially; only sometimes; I feel anxious to look at the mirrors in the dark to see someone there except me) - Cleithrophobia or Cleisiophobia- Fear of being locked in an enclosed place. (For me that's being in very narrow and small places that thinking about it makes me feel lack of air and I start panicking) - Pediophobia- Fear of dolls. - Scopophobia or...

If we enroll our children to day care so we can go back to our workplace, can we justify our children doing same when they have to tend to their lives and put us in ages care ?
Janice S 76330
Neither my children nor my grandchildren went into care. When needed, my children were looked after by my parents. When needed, my grandchildren are looked after by me. Just recently my grandchildren told me that when I can't look after myself I will be going to live with them. I thanked them and said we will discuss that when the time comes.

I notice when people disagree, emotions are at an extreme. Which is another reason why I try to disagree with civility. Why do you believe it is so difficult for people to disagree without resorting to name-calling or simply throwing out insults?
APB
A lack of intelligence and comprehension, add a poor vocabulary, as a good starting point ...then add a total lack of empathy, blind conviction and extreme arrogance...racial hatred is just the icing on the cake really...isn't it?...none of it is necessary and it makes me sad.

To better ourselves we have to change the way we do things. We set goals and take actions in order to achieve it.

I joined the Heart Foundation walking group in my local area in late December so i am ready for my first early morning weekly walk on 7 December. Yep, not go overboard but definitely take the steps I should have taken years ago to slow down the decline that comes with old age.

Do you think there is any justice in the law and do you think the wealthy have an unfair advantage in matters of law?
Bugalugs
Of course money buys Justice. Money can buy anything, anybody & power & that includes the Police, Magistrates, Juidges, Politicians. How often have we heard an accused person being treated with kid gloves because if the "reputation" - that simply menas they have money to buy their freedom.. If you are poor you haven't a hope in hell of getting Justice. Just look at how some of the Wealthiest Organisations in the World, such as the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Islamic, Jewish religious businesses got away with so much Child Sex Abuse until the outcry from the Public became too loud to ignore. They were all responsible for covering-up and protecting 1000s of paedophiles and they were also responsible for "Murder from a distance" - some call it Suicide, the 10s of thousands of lives they destroyed and they asll got away with it because those orgnaisations had the money to buy protection starting with the Police and then all the way up to the highest courts in the country.

Trying to maintain a certain standard of beauty is tough, especially after thirty. There is so much societal pressure on women without having to look at photoshopped images of bodies that are unattainable. And they wonder why so many women have eating disorders. The mind boggles!

In all honesty, I probably outlay around six hundred bucks a month but it is most definitely worth it. And it will end up getting spent on something else anyway.
The dog house
I have not had an alcohol drink in over a year. As I have coeliac disease I am reluctant to have any thing. I do feel like some now and again but walking the dog helps to relax me so I do not need alcohol. $600 is a lot of money on alcohol. You could save that money and when lock down eases you could go on holiday. I also feel that the preservative in alcohol is not good for our body.

Self-care is really important during these challenging times. So many people (particularly on social media) are in a constant state of hysteria. But you don't have to get caught up in the fear and negativity. You can choose to be positive and hopeful. I am spending this time looking after my body and mind. I feel great.

I do not dwell on it. I go about my house and do opinion polls, watch a bit of TV, take my dog for a walk, housework, etc. What's different. Never been all that social so I don't miss that. All these people who are treating this virus as nothing though make me angry. It's not a conspiracy, it's nothing to do with 5G, it's not made up, I am from another culture so don't understand, and worse the ones who think they can do what they want. I get angry at the ones who think they are beyond the rules and actually spread the virus to innocent people who have been doing the right thing. We have it here in Queensland again and it looks like it has spread from a few people who thought they could do as they please lying and crossing the border after leaving Victoria. Personally, I feel now as there is plenty of information out there and if people flaunt the rules and people get sick or worse die they should be made accountable with heavy fines, jail and charges of murder in the case of a death linked back to t

Maybe it's just me, but have you found that when you order some kit set furniture like bunk beds, or shelving units etc. You get MOST of what you need? And usually there are some missing bolts, or the joints don't quite line up etc, what has been your experience? Also, do you try to send it back, or just figure it out and make it work??

I've had a lot of bosses, both male & female. Which do you prefer?
Maria B 89860
Had both, don't care what sex so long as they are fair and have no favourites whose work I end up doing as well as my own.
