Discussions of the day

Interested to know how both retirees and employed fill any spare time you have or your day if retired. If you have children/grandchildren do you spend a lot of time with them? I simply relax for most of my time - more so because of covid.
Robin L 79437
Gardening, housework, home maintenance. I am a retired widow and there is so much that has to be done when you are on your own.

There is an old cliche: the young ones these days have no respect for elders. I am talking about manners, about their attitudes towards other grown ups. I was once in high school myself and back then I thought I was in a critical stage of my life when I was doing my HSC! It was like my whole future depends on this certificate! Twenty odd years plus rolled on now I am a fully mature person who has earned my respect done the yard so to speak. I cannot tolerate those...
Sheree T
I believe everything needs to go back to basics. Start with respect and manners and that starts in the home. These days a lot of children are basically raised by day care centers. If you want to have children stay home for a few years with them and give your children a good start in life.

Is it possible to stay true to your internal compass (morals, principles, scruples, values, etc)? Life (society) is constantly pushing you off-course. In the end, I went with the means justified the end (your goals in life). I did not stay true to my internal compass - but I did get what I wanted out of life! Do you think an individual can stay true to herself or himself internal compass?

How old is to old to sleep with childhood toys. In the internet say 34% adults sleep with they childhood toys and 44% keep they childhood toys living. Is wrong to keep the toy or sleep with its. Or is something feel saved to be close to the remember with love.

You're never too old for most things (like perhaps you can be too old to suck a dummy). I'm 73 and I'm definitely not too old to work! I enjoy it

I've been in an exclusive relationship on line for just over three years. We have never met in person, but have formed a very deep, personal life the best we can through Zoom, etc. What are your personal thoughts on how to keep the relationship alive and exciting?
Beverley S 383001
Don't give money or any of your financial details via an online relationship. Until you actually meet and spend a lot of time together do not trust completely.

Everyday the world changes and then the world puts on a new face (metamorpohically speaking.). I went from being a victim, to a hunter, and now I in the twilight of my life - I am hunter that captured by the game. What face did you put on this morning?
Jenny L 591463
Well if we were happier then we wouldn't need masks, we'd be able to face the world head on. The world is in such a state it takes a huge effort just to hold our heads up high.

I am hearing a lot about Free Speech, as of late. I currently am in the country of my parent's birth (USA) and many are saying that Free Speech is being targeted. They said that social media is being far too repressive. Many say, there needs to be restrictions due to what occurred at the Capitol. So, what are your thoughts concerning Free Speech and are you under the impression that it is "under attack"?
Cindy N 315785
As an Aussie who's news media has been blocked by Fb, what is this free speech you speak of? Even our TV news is totally leftist. We are only being told what the government wants us to hear, and so much of that is sensationalist click bait headlines. We are not free to pray for homosexuals as we risk a huge fine and jail term, even if they are our own children we are praying for. One of our Australian rugby players was fired for a religious post on his own Fb wall....

There is an interesting debate going on in America specially among Hollywood actors that they only shower when they start to smell or feel icky. Even when they do shower they only wash certain important parts and don't wash their body with soap everyday either. What do you all think of this and how often do you shower or bath. I shower everyday and some days twice and can not go without having shower.
Glenys H 310155
I shower daily, I wash my hair alternate days. When I worked in Aged Care we showered clients minimum of 3 days per week, 7 days if there were continence issues. (Community care, clients were still in their own homes)

Why do so few people understand the proper use of apostrophes? Are we beginning to lose the rudiments of the English language ?
Heather M 241632
Unfortunately, the teachers of today are those students who were not taught grammar and punctuation when they were in school. I've seen mistakes on school reports written by teachers.
I heard a young woman say that it's patronizing to put punctuation in a text message. Patronizing? I felt like asking her if she knew the meaning of the word!

What do you do to save Money? Favourite budget recipes, buying in bulk, any tricks or tips? Im always on the look out for bargains and ways to save.

I stock up on non-perishables at sale time. I've never paid full price for hair colour or washing detergent: I wait until they're on sale for 50% off, then buy two or three packs. I buy new boots at the end of winter sales & sandals & swimwear at the end of summer. I'm more concerned about comfort & quality than the latest fashions. For larger items like furniture, I wait until post-Xmas or end of financial year sales. I also sew a lot of my own clothes - that saves a LOT!

I'm living in America, and it's almost on a daily basis, that a food sold in a grocery store or health food store is being recalled. For salmonella, etc. It just makes me wonder, why are so many foods being recalled, so often.. Are companies cutting costs, at our expense? And, have you ever been a victim of a food recalled product?
AlbertA K 456302
Here in NZ we are reasonably confident that our team of consumer and health services take food safety very seriously and only order recalls when absolutely necessary.

What would you do if you saw a mother hitting her child in public? Would you say something or just mind your own business?
dale k 247571
as a parent of 2 special needs children ( now Adults in age) I would be aware of many different reasons, Child abusers who are the ones that are killing our children by abuse do not display their actions in public, and many time's discipline is more about safety issues, protecting the child from danger

How young is to young for a child to play 15+ or a 18+ game? I know of few parents that let their 5-7 year olds play these violent games, my son is 11 and a half and I've only just let him start playing the 15+ games but not the 18+.

Do you believe that when our loved ones are gone that they can still see us and watch over us and that they try to communicate with us? Do you believe that mediums and psychics can honestly speak to the dead? Or do you believe that once they are gone thats it. They are gone. Theres no communicating with each other and theres no such thing as ghosts or spirits?

Why stop at corona virus. The flu kills people too, more young people than corona as well. We should fine and jail anyone with the flu as well. How about some one who knowingly keeps bees they are known to kill some people if stung lets throw them in jail too. Ohh wow just imagine how much we could fine the CCP for knowingly letting it out. Not quite sure how we would jail the CCP though

Governments are suspected of keeping important information under lock and key , sometimes for many years. It is not just a conspiracy theory either. Are you concerned about what secrets your National government might be holding? SECURITY, UFO'S, SPYING, etc! What do you think?
BLACK LIVES MATTER
A very good question! NOTHING is too sensitive (or dangerous) that it needs to be kept a secret (mishandling of the pandemic by former president Trump - his administration believe that pandemic was a hoax created by a too liberal press). However, it is a great way for ANY government to avoid disclosing their corruption (or incompetence) issues (military cost overruns for new weapons or weapon system). It is better for the public too know the facts (Biden won the election - USA) - instead of coming up with conspiracy theories (Biden did not won the election - USA) which people (in any country) - begin to believe (with horrendous results) - USA: 01/06/2021 - storming of the Capital building in Washington, D. C. The TRUTH (facts) should always see DAYLIGHT -without being twisted by any government!

You do realise that COVID is on the rise again, and because of this no-one will be going anywhere for a while. There are also people who believe it is all a farce and so therefore not wearing masks and demonstrating in public without masks. These people are crazy. Honestly who cares about human rights when a mask could save lives.

After finishing a lease on a house recently, we were issued with a thousand-page document as a condition report. We did all that was necessary under our legal obligations. Payments were made for replacement batteries and light bulbs, flea testing because we had a cat, lawn mowing, weeding and finally professional cleaning just to make sure everything was completed. It turned into a nightmare of nauseating detail. I will never rent again. Do you have any negative...

After leaving a rental house, during which time the bottom level was a few cm under water after a flood, I got a call from the landlord saying the house wasnt clean enough. I had scrubbed it and told her about the water downstairs which she had been kept up to date with for a few days previously. She told me the fans were dirty. I asked had she got up on a ladder and checked them which she replied no. I answered I had scrubbed them top and bottom and they were just old with flaky paint. After going back and forth for a while on different things she realised I had cleaned properly! Some agents are just rude and nasty

What were your favourite subjects at school? My favourites throughout high school were English, Drama & History. In early high school Commerce was fun, in later high school Economics was tolerated only. My hated ones were Religion & PE/ sport. Both, of which were a complete waste of time to me, though I didn't mind cheering on friends who were into sports. How about you?

I don't have favorite subjects, favorite teachers, or fond memories (of school) when I was in school - elementary (K thru 6), junior high school (7 thru 8), or senior (night) high school (9 thru 12). Today? Nothing. My parenst and all my siblings are dead, my other relatuives, neices, nephews etc. all live 100s of kilometers away and we only catch up once or twice a year. But don't get me wrong I am not complaining, do not feel lonely or hard done by. I keep busy and so y week-ends are a time to relax, go to the beach - doesn't matter what the weather is like, like the smell of the sea (usually great), the sound of the waves and the Seagulls calling. I don't believe in any religion or after life so these quiet times on the beach are my version of heaven!

When you buy something from a supermarket under the label 2 for the price of one ... say the normal price is $10 before they put it on special. So you get 2 expected to pay $10, and you come to the counter and the charge you $10.40 is that fair, or you are being ripped off? What do you think

In Australia, if an item scans at a different price to the shelf, take it to the service counter & show the receipt & you get the wrongly scanned item FREE! If you buy multiples of that item, only the first is free, but they will refund the extra amount you paid for the other products. I've got a better-than-average memory & actively look out for specials, so I get items free from time to time.

I recently took my car into the dealership's service garage for limited work, i.e. replace summer tires with winter tires and an oil change. I was told in advance it would cost $450, but the garage performs an inspection before it commences work on the car. I think it is fun to give online translators things translate from English to another language and then have that result translated into another language and so forth (like internet Chinese Whispers) until you get to a point where you can't be bothered any more, and then you ask it to translate the final result back into English and see what it ends up saying. ...

I was at the dentist today, and we were talking about how teeth don't get better with age. This started off a discussion about what does get better with age. Of course, wine was mentioned. He said his cooking was getting better, and his assistant said she was less anxious about what other people thought of her. I thought I was better at considering other people's points of view than when I was young. What do you think gets better with age?

Regardless of how well you think you remember things, all of our brains are full of memories of events that never happened so-called false memories. And that, according to science, isn't necessarily something to worry about. What would you say? Do we remember things the way they really happened, or the mind can play tricks on us?
Elizabeth A 807208
I guess we all see things differently and what one sees the other doesn't. My mum used to exaggerate when she was telling stories about her childhood and her sisters would say that's not the way I remember it.

Should there be stricter building regulations in fire-prone areas, including the use of materials like metal roofs and stucco walls, and a reduction in the amount of wood used? Additionally, should every house in these areas be required to have a water reserve for fire emergencies? Finally, should escape plans and properly maintained vehicles be mandatory?
Laura 1512647
I think with the fires in California that could have been avoided if the state would have done their job and do brush clearing year round or controlled burns, the fires could have been smaller and easier contained. I think we should rebuild but look at material being used.

For me, decent housing improves health, education, and work. It provides a sense of safety and belonging. Without a decent home, it is difficult to contribute to society. Because housing is so vital to our "mana" and wellbeing, it is a human right. How is it where you live, and what are your thoughts?
merricat
Where is it written that we have the "right" to expect a home, or shelter? From our earliest ancestors, they had to hunt and gather what they needed to survive. They hunted animals for food, and they used the skin and bones to build shelters and make clothing, using crude tools made from other parts from the animals they hunted. Eventually, they made better tools, allowing to build better homes using more natural elements, rocks, wood, mud, eventually metal. They had to work for everything that needed. There were no free handouts. Why should any able humans expect anyone to give them anything that they didn't work for?

Yes, the people who run puppy farms should be euthanised. The people who purchase them and don\u2019t get them desexed should be euthanised. The people who dump them because they are too much work should also be euthanised.

My biggest frustration is trying to set/reset passwords. It used to be simple. Now you need a minimum of 6-8 letters with numericals, upper case, lower case, symbols, can't re-use old passwords, etc. I can spend up to half an hour trying to come up with a password that a website accepts & one that I will remember. Then by the time I have come up with my unique never used before password, I promptly forget it. Then the cycle starts all over again. Yes, I write them down. And what I mess my notebook looks like!

Has anyone reused their clothes? An example is a jumper I do not care to wear out anymore, so I have decided to use it as a pyjama top because it is warmer than the original pyjama top. I have a shiny top that I have had for 10 years, so I am going to cut it up and make a few headbands for myself. Anyone else done the same?

always recycle, reuse, pass to someone else. i do it with clothes, shoes and other things. while my recycling is not 100% i certainly try my best. i also use other, water system for bathroom, use recyclable kitchen towels in addition to my paper towels, to reduce my use of paper. i only buy clothes i know i need, use clothes i have until they need to be recycled. i donate ones that are still in good condition to people who may need them and cannot afford them, same with shoes. i do my best not to just throw things away. i am working towards minimalistic use of things in general but to be honest i find it challenging still.

I decided to pay for Stan Sport this year, so I could watch the tennis games of my choice and also all the exciting Olympic Games in Paris. In recent years, I have been disappointed with Free to Air TV because I ended up missing many crucial games. They seem to be too selective and restrictive and do not offer full coverage of all the events. What do you think?
Graham A
The fact that you watch Stan Sport is exactly why you can't see a lot of sport on FTA TV anymore! I am not sure why you think you need it to watch the Olympic Games as it will be on FTA TV.
Heaps of sporting broadcast rights have been bought by major broadcasting companies such as the disgusting Murdoch empire and it is then locked away behind a paywall. The minnows like the Australian FTA stations just cannot compete with the money offered by the majors and THAT is why you can't see things like F1 or MotoGP anymore on free to air. The likes of Stan Sport, Kayo etc means no pay...no view.
It's nothing to do with being 'too selective and restrictive' it's because people will pay Stan Sport to watch events and so it becomes a money making proposition. It's that simple.

I have read in different places that some people believe that they should be paid for helping with their grandkids and these days most families both of the parents to get by and if they have to pay a grandparent to help it sometimes cost too much and the kids miss out. So I've never been to a concert before and have been thinking about seeing one for once. But I've been seeing a lot of conspiracy that concerts are secretly demonic rituals in disguise. What are your thoughts on the matter?

It really depends on who you go see. I've been to some Christian music concerts and they were true representation of love for God and Jesus Christ, hope. I've read about a concert by a group I'd never heard of and before the concert started they asked the audience who would like to give their life to Satan. CREEPY even writing those words down.

Recently, my family and I were trapped on an escalator at a major Hardware store, when the wheels of a trolley caught at the bottom of the escalator. People started to panic as they were pushed into one another. It was a very frightening experience. Fortunately, my daughter-in-law knew how to press the stop button to our great relief. No one was hurt, just shaken up. Surely there should be more education about safety and access to emergency buttons when necessary....

The main thing that's required when using an escalator is common sense. An escalator is designed for a 2 legged person to stand on and hold the handrail as it moved the person up or down. They are not meant to transport wheeled objects.

When you finish a relationship, need some time to get use to be yourself again, because you have being with someone during a while. But which is the best moment to start dating again? Maybe you are not looking a relationship, maybe you are just looking for a distraction, or maybe you want to found the love again but you kind of feel guilty to try it again because everybody is telling you that it's too soon to start something. But what If you already have overcome it?
Linda C
Each person has their own time table. Me, I dated a few guys but after a few I decided it was no longer for me. I have not dated now in over 25 years and happy about it. Some people though like the twosomes. Never listen to other people. If you make a mistake then you own it.

It has happened to me, not once, but twice. The first time I legally fought them, got my job back, but felt the tension with the co-workers and managers. Although I did not do anything wrong to be forced out, when I returned, I couldn't take the stress and tension, so I resigned. What would you do if you were pushed out from your job by someone in authority over you?

There are laws that state that something "on sale"...HAS to have been originally sold at a higher price...but there don't seem to be any rules on what "a limited time" is...are there?...and I see a few stores having these sales for several years at a time....shouldn't they be stopped from doing this?...or is it just buyer beware?...or a "bit of fun"....what do you think?
Enloe M
When I worked at a supermarket they would have a 10 items for 10 dollars sale. That would be 1 dollar for each item. But here is the thing, some items were 89 cent at the regular price. we employees would tell certain customers this and they would tell others.

Going on my first camping trip. What are the essentials to take with you on a camping trip?
Sandra C 12043
Lots of the things already mentioned but 1. a map of where you are going . 2. Leave a detailed list of where you are are heading with someone you trust, how long for and the date you should be back, so they can notify the authorities if you don't return on time. Safety should be the foremost thing on your mind, especially if you are going alone.

I am so very interested what everyone is going to have for their Christmas food. Can you hit me with some ideas? Last year we fed lots of people, so I made salmon, ham and pulled pork with a few different salads and baked potatoes. This year, I would like to keep it more easy and casual. Also, will have fewer guests.

France will pay bonus to get their clothes and shoes repaired rather than throwing them away. The main idea is to cut down on the 700,000 tonnes of cloths thrown away by French people each year, two third of which end up in their landfills. Do you think, the North America, Australia and Canada will do same things in the near future?
Paula J 395266
I used to get my shoes re-soled, I had my thongs turned into sandals, handbag handles fixed or replaced but the bootmaker retired and no tec offers a Bootmaking apprenticeships so nothing will get fixed or repaired again. I fix or alter many of my clothes but cotton, zippers and buttons are so expensive, not to mention fabric, it's very often cheaper to buy something new rather than fix or repair it. So all of that needs to change before we can hang onto our old stuff.

Electric cars sales are currently plummeting Worldwide and car giants are panicking...powered by... in the most part...fossil fuels...limited lifespans with expensive replacement parts and unsustainable batteries and oh yes....sometimes...just sometimes...they explode into flames. They might be causing more new problems than they were supposed to fix...why aren't we using Hydrogen? We already have hydrogen powered cars...why is there nowhere to fuel them?
Michael B 384408

Electric scooters...who would have imagined this breakthrough 20 years ago!...now obese children who would have had to experience exercise on a bike or scooter, along with obese adults who probably wouldn't be anything at all...can now silently zoom around on the pavements...at speeds of up to 40 km per hour...maiming themselves and helpless pedestrians who get in their way...and they will be able to do this until enough people have killed...serious injury is not...

Should school be a chore? Why can't learning be fun? I think that the way children are taught at school is too methodical and processed, it's a critical time for our kids, I was lucky enough to have great teachers who along with factual information I was also taught me why this information is important for instance I had a maths teacher in high school who took us to putt, putt to teach us speed and angle in relation to ball to the hole 95 percent of that class scored BS or...

I had a few gems as teachers...but not many...I had a lot of fun at school but I wasn't supposed to be enjoying myself..so a fair bit of the time resulted in mad people hitting me with canes...over the bottom or across the palms..and a stream of half hour detentions after school..but none of it worked..I didn't get depressed...or give in....I still had laughing fits...I still had fun...that's what kids do!
...kids are VERY resilient..,and you cannot cure them of being REALLY happy,,I'd lie on the floor laughing and could not get up!..
....I am not sure how our current batch of little angels would cope with that...they would probably need therapy...(these days I might get therapy or medication for being optimistic defiant and happy...it is probably a medical condition...like everything else)
many of our current batch were really damaged during covid because they didn't see their friends....it affected their communication skills and their abilities at school....I wonder how they would cope with the Blitz....
or being in other interesting places...we might be raising a generation of babies that never want to leave home...

Spent a few days in Sydney, and I'm not so good on my feet, so used a lot of very expensive taxis. Overhead one driver actually asked for a tip and got himself a five dollar reward. This was wrong of him to ask for, as none of the others did, what do you think?
BLACK LIVES MATTER
I don't believe in tipping (I don't tip, and I don't feel self-conscious when I don't tip). Your employer (taxi drivers are employees) - should be paying you enough - so a customer shouldn't have to TIP YOU (known as subsidized your wages/earnings)! For as I am concerned - this individual (described in your scenario) needs to get a "real" job that doesn't involve tipping!

I have never had a problem....EVER..... with Woolworths or Coles. I always hope they over charge me. I have scored heaps of stuff over the years...probably the best was a jar of 400gm Moccona coffee.

What is our destiny? I have often wondered this, and I have to say it is very hard to come up with an answer. We can search for a lifetime without ever having a clue, so we just drift along, either working until the end or doing other odd jobs to see if something clicks. I have to say I wonder if there is a better way that I haven t discovered at this time, but if anyone should have an answer to this, I would definitely like to know.
BLACK LIVES MATTER
No answers, just my core belief system at work, hopeful; providing insight. DESTINY is what you are meant to do. It is your soul's dream for you. While FATE happens when you don't take responsibility for your life. DESTINY is what happens when you commit to growing, learning, and taking chances. DESTINY is not absolutely predetermined, but more like a beautiful, perfect, deeply meaningful plan (that is tailored to suit you - and only you). It is the force (Destiny) that some people think controls what happens in the future (your future), and which cannot be influenced by people (or the public).

Why is it that, there are so many people, especially who owns cats & dogs, they don't look after them. To me, it doesn't matter what animal you choose to own. If you chose a pet to have, it is your responsibility to look after it. A pet is the same way as looking after a child. You need to vaccinate it, play with it, get them some pet toys, exercise it, clean its droppings, feed it, give it something to drink & put it to bed. With all these responsibilities, nothing is...
Teri 1282723
I agree that if you have any animal, you look after all of it's needs... food, water, shelter, toys, socialization, medication, vaccinations, comfy bed, affection and loving attention. There is no excuse for neglect or abuse. Some people have no respect for themselves and have no idea how to express it to others whether children, spouse, co-workers, officials, wildlife or their own pets that they chose to take in. If you don't know love and respect, you cannot show love and respect. And some people are just so angry and take it out on those around them. These animals need rescuing and the people who abuse them need deep psychological help.

People around me have been receiving phone scams for the past four years. They sometimes have your correct personal information and trick you about your credit card, home internet, and undeliverable packages. Do you think that everyone should receive the same pay as what the government is saying? I don t agree, as you work your butt off to earn a high salary by putting yourself through education and university, to earn a top paid job. Then you have people that are so lazy, decides to finally get a job and wants to earn as what you have. This is wrong. What do you think?
Claude H
You must be paid enough now so stop bleating. Think of all those people who are just existing through no fault of their own. You chose to get your education while others could not afford that way of life. This does not mean they are not capable. There are many highly educated people that are incompetent and do not deserve what they are paid.

If someone with a lot of education (law school grad, for example) decided they'd be happier doing something that even didn't require college, like a plumber, bartender, opening a coffee shop or grocery store, whatever, Is that an okay decision to make or a waste of an education?
Smiley
I truly "LOVE" how people see jobs in trades (plumber, chippie, sparkie, gardener, etc) or retail as a lower rated job, like the people who work those jobs are a lesser person to someone who has completed many years of uni or has a high degree.
If it wasn't for cleaners, retail staff, check out operators, tradies and the like, how would you be able to do your shopping or even live? You would not have a house to live in- lots of tradies helped to build the vast majority of homes we all live in, without retail staff there'd be no shops operating, without cleaning staff many businesses would be piled high in filth.
I know of people who have doctorates, people who are A/Prof's who are cleaners or are doing labouring jobs or retail work as they simply cannot get work in their field, or maybe their job got too stressful, so they chose to do something completely different. These people also do a lot of volunteer work in roles some other "well educated" would not dream of doing.
I think it comes down to how you are raised. If you grew up with a silver spoon in your mouth and your parents taught you to look down on those with "lesser jobs", then sadly i think it will be very hard to change how one sees and treats other people and you may struggle with life if you're thrown a curve ball.
If you're raised to treat the cleaners, retail workers and garbage truck driver with respect and talk to them as a fellow equal human being, than i think you're a well rounded person who will do fine in life and be able to handle whatever the world throws their way.
And just as a FYI- Plumbers and tradies do up to 4years study/on the job training.
Bartenders and coffee shop workers also do a lot of training courses and need to get accreditation for some of their roles.
Same with grocery store workers. Yes, it's a job where you can start with no experience, but after doing the job for a while, you will realise you deal with many different things- abusive and/or rude customers, customers who they tell their deepest secrets to, you will sometimes be the ONLY person an individual (customer) interacts with, you will form friendships with customers, you will learn a lot about how a business is run.
If you study for a decade and are still miserable, was it all worth it?
If you start an entry level job and thoroughly enjoy it, do you consider this to be a waste of your education or the fact you have had an amazing opportunity open up for you?

So I have a daughter who worked at a warehouse in customer service. Her hours have been cut so low because she's not needed at the checkout since self service is available. As a matter of fact it's all self service there now. What do you think about machines taking over some people jobs? I find it quite frustrating
Timothy N 929266
REFUSE TO USE SELF-SERVICE. If that is the only option I call a staff member in to do it for me on the rare occasion that I have to visit that store simply because there is no other choice in the town I live in. I never do self service at a supermarket. The prices have wages built into them so darn well employ someone! 90% of my groceries are now home delivered, so for the same cost, I am employing the computer/ order person, a supervisor, packer, checker, delivery driver and website developer/ managers - and still the supermarket is making mega millions each year. GOOD BYE SELF SERVICE and HELLO HOME DELIVERY

Your son, daughter, grand child....has finally passed their licence. They don't have a lot of money, but would like a reliable one. They ask your advice. So what car would you recommend? Manual? Auto? Hybrid? Safety rating? Brand? Yes, a broad subject, but from experience or knowledge what would you choose for them? Public transport or walking is out of the question as they have to travel. Thanks.
Bugalugs
Toyota or Mazda but, but as Roslyn A says, hybrid or EV would be great but at present too expensive even for a used one. Manual or Automatic. I know this may sound a bit sexist but I think most young men would prefer a Manual as they are more fun to drive!

You are taking a walk in the park when you notice a person stumbling, do you assume they are intoxicated or do you ask if they are okay? This situation happened as I was at work and noticed a man stumbling on the lawn. Another worker also saw him and went to check on him and realized he was a coworker who was diabetic and needed assistance. What would you do?
Sandra C 12043
Of course, wouldn't anyone do that ?? Why would you even need to think about it ?? Just imagine yourself in that situation. How would you feel if people ignored you thinking yiou were drunk?? Thank heavens 2 cars stopped recently when my husband had a fall on the footpath, it was darkish, but they stopped and helped him up. He was only a few steps from home, so he was fine. I can't believe that you would have to stop and think before acting,.

Well, I am a 51-year-old female with terrible decision-making skills. (Had mental breakdown July 2019.) It has gotten to the point that I'm almost scared to decide anything. What I want is to have my boyfriend take over my decision-making so I avoid bad decisions. He isn't okay with it for his love for me gets in the way. How can I get him to understand that this is for the best?
Sandra C 12043
You need to seek professional help. Asking your boyfriend to make your decisions is putting too much stress on him and you may lose him. Get help from a professional and keep your relationship on a loving basis.

I was dating an addict for several years. I eventually kicked him out of my home. I have since joined a site of families of addicts. So my questions is - should you stay and support the addict when their behaviors impact your lifestyle? I left for my own mental health, but I have heard both sides. People that say if you love them you would stay, others like me who had enough and left. Curious about what others think?

I remember 20 plus years ago when landlines were still common, getting phone calls in the evening to complete a survey. It would go on sometimes for a good half hour and they were not paid surveys. So if I get frustrated from screening out, I think of the phone surveys I did for free and at least the online surveys pay something lol. Does anyone still get contacted to do an unpaid telephone survey, or are they a thing of the past?

In Australia, we have medicare to help cover health cost. Should there be medicare for your pets too?
Bugalugs
Why do so many people expect "The Government" - But READ "Other Taxpayers" to pay for everything now? People have children and they expext other Taxpayers to foot the cost of Childcare. Why? People are earning combined salaries of well over $AU200,000.00. Let them cut their wallets so that they can pay All their own Childcare Costs. Our Parents and Grandparents managed to have children and bring them up themselves and none of them had anything like the Incomes that people have today. Think on this, if you will. Today the Unions are asking for a Pay Rise of 7% for the Lowest Paid Workers, a rise which will make their Minimum Weekly Pay $AU812. Compare that to Old Age Pensioners who worked hard for 50 and more years, paid all their Taxes, raised their children and got No Financial Assistance from any Government were recently given an increase of 3.7% which brought the single OAP up to about $AU560 per week.
Yes, by all means extend what was, dishonestly, touted at the time as "Universal Health Care" aka Medicare to cover all Dental and Optical Expenses, but including Pet Care is a step too far. What will they be asking for next? That other Taxpayers pay for all their Food, Alcohol and Illegal Drugs? Their Motor Vehicle expenses?
Fortunately we still do not live in some sort of-Socialist-cum-Communist State such as China. Did you realise that under the Chinese Communist Party Dictatorship you have to get permission from it to move from your village/town/city of Birth to another? That is what those calling for "The Government", read TAXPAYERS to cover Pet Care under Medicare will end up getting.

After answering a discussion about marriage, I decided to start a discussion about independence after years of codependency. I have been in many toxic relationships, never a good one. I've been single for 3 years now, and I'm thinking about dating again, but I'm not ready to give up my independence. It seems like I only attract toxic people, so I'm very leary. It also seems like guys always want to rush into things. If you find yourself relating to how I feel, can you please give me...

I was devastated after my children's father, my first and only true love from the age of 15, told me after I finished a night shift as an RN that he had spent the night while I was at work and slept with a woman that he had met ( I hadn't a clue) when he played cricket on Saturday's and planned to move in with her immediately. I was also informed by him that "the sex was so good that they'd broke the bed". Yes there'd been problems in the marriage and the past year had been especially tough after moving and renovating an old house I'd inherited and the death of my beloved mum to cancer and trying to help my Dad through the loss of his lifetime partner. I don't know if I can say that I had a mental breakdown but I did try and kill myself which ended up costing me a 3 day stay in a ward in the hospital that I worked in but with a "special" nurse so that I wasn't left alone although thankfully NOT in the psychiatric ward as my boss wouldn't allow it, but I changed after that whole experience. I was 39, had 5 kids and I thought "well if HE doesn't want me I'll have to find somebody else who will appreciate me". This led to a short relationship with one of my soon to be ex husband's friend from Church who had recently got divorced from HIS wife. I look back on that experience, which I try hard NOT to do, which led me to remarry just 2 days after my divorce came through and that lasted under 6 months. I was still shell-shocked after my 1st husband's betrayed and CLEARLY not thinking straight and I NEVER dated or looked at another man again. That was almost 19 years ago and when my aged father tries to suggest, which he has many times over the years, for me to find someone, I just tell him that I'm happier with just my 5 cats! I did look after my 1st husband's dad until he died coming up to 5 years this July, and the shame that I felt over the fallout of both those marriages and the eventual loss of my home and bankruptcy, allowed me to be so busy to look for another someone even if I HAD wanted to, but I felt that I had nothing to offer someone anyway, as "why would they want ME?" I am TRULY happy, although "happy" is an emotion that I haven't felt for years, but perhaps content is a more appropriate definition of how I feel, with my animals for companionship, but I know that I would judge any relationship and make too many comparisons to my previous relationships to be able to be open to letting myself fall in love again. I know that this story sounds morose and moribund as do I, but you CAN be wounded so much that you shut down ALL future opportunities for happiness. However I wish the other commentors here all the best with their own romantic endeavours!

Should Public Transport Be Free? Well I think yes in urgent and/or important situations because they are very major, and we need to get there, that way, we need transport. Transport is never free. During COVID-19, all schools were closed and everyone had to work and study online. Usually almost everyone always wished to work from home but once they actually had to do it, that s when it wasn t so funny or comfortable as imagined. So now that we can go out again. If you have the option to send your kids to school or do the same thing online, what would you do?
Agonis
I am home-schooling my children and they have regular meetups with the other children that are also homeschooled in the area. I was already studying online when covid happened. I much prefer working and studying from home as there are fewer interruptions. My son has thrived in homeschooling as he has the option of choosing what he studies (within reason) he has additional needs and there are no small class options in the area so this works best for him and we did not utilize technology, he has been doing pen and paper, educational books and social skills by visiting the community centres to see other homeschooled families.

At my workplace, I have noticed a change in how staff culture has changed around sickness and taking time off work to recover, has anyone else? Before the days of Covid, staff would come into work with colds and coughs and "battle on" to get the work done. Now I find the staff where I work are more likely to take sick leave for colds and practice more self-care despite ever-increasing workloads. Has staff culture changed in your workplace?

No, it has always been that way where I work. The doctor insisted. It has made no difference the Covid. I only work 1 day a week now as am retired. However, the doctor has always said if you are sick stay home as it is not fair on the patients....or him.

Australia and the UK share to a certain extent that the local pubs and bars are HUBS, where people get together and socialise. The increasing massive taxes on beer in both countries...and possibly elsewhere too along with covid have resulted in a massive shut-down of pubs. People cannot afford to drink...owners cannot afford to stay open...and aside from other issues...this is going to radically change our society and how we live what do you think?

There is more to life in communities than just drinking. There might be less domestic violence for instance. there are hundreds of different ways to socialize than getting together for a drink. Some communities are being destroyed by excess drinking. Aboriginal women are being killed more often as a result. Publicans have exploited customers for far too long. It is time to enjoy each other's company without the effects of liquor.

What addictions do you have? Do you think it is a good addiction or a bad one? What do you do to stop this addiction? My personal addiction is tea. I drink about 15-20 cups of black tea a day. I love it and nobody ever told me that it is bad for me, so I don't think it's a bad addiction.

Chocolate! My biggest weakness but so far this year I have not had any,it's my journey to start eating healthier and look after myself better so as I age I won't be suffering like my mother is.

Aside from World Peace and Justice for All, (no, really, I do want that), I'd like a comfy pair of slippers/loafers, a good box of gooey chocolates and someone to help me tidy/arrange my house - so's I can keep it that way. Too much? Looking about me now, I think world peace would be easier to achieve, lol. We can only hope!

Up all night! Be damned. The fat free loading bugger sneaks around peeping through bedroom windows to check on kids. He then breaks into houses to drink all the beer and snack on a few biscuits. I got arrested when I tried doing that type of thing. No one wanted me to come back the following year.

There are always friends like this, I'm telling a friend that I have a genetic disease, and then they say, you need to exercise more, you need to drink more water, and say something encouraging to me. To me, very annoying. Why don't they understand? This is a hereditary disease, not something that can be changed by exercise. You can't change what's in my body's genes, If it can be improved by doing some exercise, They are not called genetic diseases. But that person is...

Do you have a family member you're not willing to speak to? I personally haven't spoken to my father in more than 5 years and have no regrets about it. I believe more in surrounding yourself with people you like, love and care about regardless to being blood related or not. I'm curious what are your thoughts?

We still don't speak to my Sister -In--Law or her husband who raped my wife over 35 years ago when pregnant with our 2nd daughter who we subsequently lost through the trauma...my wife's sister defended her husband saying he'd never do that! My wife says she never had that sister!

We started out with silver tops and gold tops (gold tops had twice the cream which tasted better) through modified, low fat and skimmed (because the fat was bad for you)...to highly manufactured fake milk made from just about anything that doesn't involve cows...at a higher cost (because cows are bad you)...and now we have A2 milk...because normal milk has two proteins...A1 and A2...A2 milk might be easier for people who have grown up in societies that have never...

Wish they would go back to glass bottles. Milk doesn't taste the same out of a plastic bottle and you can reuse glass bottles

I was bullets in the workplace as I didn't take my break as them want. The rule is after 2 hours you get your tea break as I didn't want to go before hand. She's telling me off in front of peoples send to the management to put me down. In the booklet nothing said to be in start of 1.30 hour start. I feel if you don't do as they say. One day the business will be kick peoples as not doing as they want. But ok, how many times they gave me later teabreaks in the pass way for...

Do you actually mean you were Bullied at your workplace?
Your entire comment simply does not make any sense whatsoever.
If English is your second language then why don't you contact one of the hundreds of agencies which specialize in teaching Adults to Read, Write and Spell, one of them regularly advertises their telephone number on TV.
To the person at Rewardia who vets this "Discussion of the day" segment why did you allow this comment to appear?

To prepare for future disasters, do you think which kinds of food never spoil, and we can start stocking them now?
'smee,SWQ!
Why not! ... Rice, Wheat, Honey etcetera - but to digress remember when milk would go off after a couple of days (note use by dates on it now!) Bread ... was stale after a day and sold at half price as "Day Old Bread"!

What is the best lesson you have ever learnt in your life, or the funniest? Mine was that you cannot make every person happy and if you have to change who you are or go against your morals or beliefs to make someone happy, then you don't need that person in your life.

Never think that everyone around you thinks the same way that you do...almost none of them do...and don't make any assumptions or plans based on that idea...people are seriously much more weird than you can possibly imagine
...that took me way far too long to work out...It'll save you a lot of time and effort....
..I might write a book about it

What books have you read in the past that made you really think, it opened your eyes? I like to read stuff about COVER UPS. People that have experienced things and revealed information... especially when it's not political-correct to do so or the mainstream media didn't want to touch it. These sorts of subjects are often on videos as well... these days.

"The happiest man on Earth" by Eddie Jaku. "The Auschwitz Photographer" by Maurizio Onnis and Luca Crippa. "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" by Heather Morris. If those three accounts of the Appalling things that can be done by Human Beings to Innocent men, women and children - 6.4 million members of the Jewish religion and another 7.3 millions simply because they did not fit in with the beliefs of a Dictator and his collaborators - do not convince you that these monsters should be stopped then nothing will.
Hitler described the Polish people & those of the Jewish faith as "Sub-humans, the "Scum of the Earth".
The Russian Dictator, Vladimir Putin, has used exactly the same words to describe the Ukrainian People.
He Must be stopped or he will, just like Hitler, exterminate them as well.
